Gaunt Virgil
tw for body horror, mild but proceed with caution
What if Virgil was hiding more than heterochromia? What happens when the others find out? Inspired by the idea that the ‘dark’ sides have one half of their face/body that is off. Originally I was going to choose just one of the other sides to write this with but I couldn’t make up my mind, so you get all three!  ships: analogical wordcount: ~930 tagging @theresneverenoughfandoms
Virgil gasps stumbling into the bathroom and shutting the door behind himself. He grasps at the counter, bracing himself on his forearms. One last time he tries to muster the strength to maintain his shift, but he can’t. With a breath he lets it fall.  The right side of his form fizzles, seeming to shrink in a way, becoming gaunt. Virgil looks up into the bathroom mirror, still leaning heavily on the counter.
This face is more familiar to him than the one he puts on. Despite seeing this one less often nowadays. He shifts his face to make the others more comfortable. His natural form is a tad on the horrifying side. There's next to no flesh on that side, not much to pillow the skin. Its stretched tight over bone, making his eyes look sunken, his cheekbones seem higher, and his jaw defined. Through thin lips, you can see the indication of teeth. His iris has shifted as well, a deep purple color now, contrast to the warm hazel of his left eye. Pallid and translucent skin it warms to the left but the right side of his face is now firmly skeletal and sickly
[Roman]
Virgil is startled out of his exploration by the door swinging open as Roman strides in whistling to himself only two steps into the room he notices Virgil. Suddenly Romans sword is in his hand.
“Virgil! Who did this to you? Have you been cursed? Show me the fiend that harmed you I shall slay them!” Roman demands posture stiffening as he looks around the bathroom frantically.
“Ro no that's no-“
“Come out you scoundrel!” Roman calls shoving aside the shower curtain “You cannot harm my friends and get away with it!”
“Roman wait just list-“
“Virgil who did this?! Was it the snake?! Does it hurt?” Roman asks spinning to face Virgil
Taking a deep breath Virgil steps forward into Romans space, taking his hands, “Ro, it's fine, it doesn't hurt, nobody did this. It's just how my face is, really is.”
“Wha-” Romans sword vanishes “What do you mean, that's not, you have never looked like that before!”
“I was hiding it because I knew this is how you’d react, I know it is… a bit horrific…” Virgil manages damn he’s tired
“Woah! Hey, doom and gloom don’t pass out on me now,” Roman says shifting his grasp to support the other side.
“Sorry princey, dunno if I can help it,” Virgil chuckles and the world shakes into darkness.
[Patton]
As horrifying as this form may seem it feels right to Virgil. The gauntness, even as he begins to shiver, bones clicking as he shakes. This side has been more healthy, Virgil is sure suppressing has not helped. He sighs, chuckling to himself. How horrified would the others be if they saw this? Saw him.
The door swings open and Virgil only has a moment to feel visceral panic and curse himself for not locking the door. A soft thump, clothes hitting the floor, seem deafening in the scared silence of the room. Patton stands in the doorway and as Virgil watches tears begin to drip down his face.
For a long aching moment, Virgil considers hiding or fleeing the room. But Patton’s tears seem to override his fight or flight response. [put some action here]
“Patton it’s okay it’s just me,” Virgil says softly
“Wh-what happened to you?” Patton hiccups through sobs
“Nothing happened Pat, it’s just my face, I can hide it,” Virgil did not know if he could actually summon his cover but he’d try if it’d help Patton.
“What? What do you mean? Kiddo?” Patton swallows his sobs
“This is, it’s just how it is? It’s okay it doesn't like hurt or anything,” Virgil offers trying to find the right answer, to stop Patton’s tears
“You look awful! Like you’re dying!” Patton cries
“I’m not though, look,” Virgil slowly approaches, shoes scuffing across the tile. He gently takes Patton's warm hand into his own and presses it to his chest, his heart, which thumps soft and firm. “I’m here Pat, it's okay, see I’m fine,”
Patton sniffs and wraps Virgil in what is possibly the tightest hug he’s ever received. “Never scare me like that again you hear me kiddo!” Patton demands, his tears beginning to soak Virgil's hoodie
“Sure thing Dad, I promise,”
[Logan]
Distantly Virgil registers a knock on the door but it isn’t until Logan walks in that he processes it. Turning to the door in surprise. Logan’s eyes go wide as they lock onto him.
Virgil is frozen, staring at Logan and unable to will himself into getting the hell out of there. Then Logan is moving, not running away, but coming closer. Stepping into Virgil's space and, gently pressing a hand to the gaunt side of Virgil's face.
“I- uh- it, ah, its, well, um, so y’know how, ah no, um, its, just my face” Virgil stammers
Logan tilts his head “It is your natural appearance? Does it cause you pain? Have you been shifting your form?” Logan asks slowly looking intently at Virgil’s mismatched eyes
“Uh, yeah, no pain, well duh, I didn’t want you to worry, or freak out or anything,” Virgil explains, trying to look anywhere except Logan’s face
“Fascinating,” Logan skims a thumb over Virgil’s cheek “It’s quite drastic, striking,” he whispers
“Uh, yeah so like don’t freak or anything, and please don’t tell the others. I don’t want them to worry, or think that I’m gross or anything, or treat me like I'm fragile, I know I look like a skeleton but I swear-”
“Virgil” Logan interrupts gently
“I swear I'm capable and like I’m not gonna break or anything, and like this is healthy like I’m not actually starving or sick or whatever. I mean as healthy as I get anyway, so uh-”
“Virgil,” Logan's other hand comes to rest on his shoulder
“And, and” Virgil is near gasping for breath now and locks eyes with Logan
Neither knows who initiates (though bets are on Logan) but very suddenly the two are kissing. Logan gently cupping Virgil's face. Virgil gasps as they pull apart.
“I know it is your purpose, but could you please quit worrying for a moment, it will be fine Virgil,”
“You just kissed me!!” Virgil exclaims, taking a shaky step back
“Oh, I’m sorry Virgil, I should have asked permission,” Logan says, quickly drawing his arms to into his chest.
“No!, well yeah, but no! I, uh, liked it?” Virgil manages cheeks flushing
“In that case may I kiss you, Virgil?”
Virgil nods. The two press close again, and whilst Virgil has never minded his appearance, he’s becoming rather certain that Logan will get him to love it.

Destiny 2 Is As Beautiful As Ever
Tumblr media
Destiny 2 is out. I’m not sure what I’m hoping to find there. At this point, it’s pretty clear Bungie’s never going to make the Destiny game I want. But I’m going back nonetheless because 1) the guns still feel great and 2) there’s some damn pretty stuff to see.
After getting to spend a fair bit of time with the game last night I ended up with quite a few screenshots, so rather than go on a long rant about how this series is still a mess, I’ll try to keep my list of grievances to a minimum and focus instead on some of the cool world building that happens in the game despite itself.
There are all different types of science fiction, but I think Destiny’s version tends to come off as inconsistent and off the wall. But really it just reminds me of the illustrations artists would do for old sci-fi paper backs or even astronomy coffee table books. It’s not built around a particular technological question, or hypotheticals about life in the future. Instead, the game’s approach is to simply take the Wikipedia page for a planet or astronomical phenomenon, dream about it, and then start throwing lines and colors on a page. On the surface, Mass Effect Andromeda seemed to be doing the same thing, but in reality the results ended up feeling much more engineered and modular; the difference between scanning a planet from above and painting it from below.
Tumblr media
Destiny’s backgrounds are great. Especially because they’re always balanced with a middle ground you can actually get to and nearby objects that contrast in volume and help frame the vista ahead.
Tumblr media
The early part of Destiny 2 veers heavily into Lord of the Rings and I sort of dig that.
Tumblr media
Bungie knows how to take good looking scenes and really make them pop by adding dramatic lighting effects. The Sleeping Beauty bramble cave below a pedestrian looking aluminum silo is also cool.
Tumblr media
Whatever you wanna call it--instagramification, neon-drenching, etc.--I think it works and helps give Destiny 2 a visual identity apart from the first game. Fighting uphill in the woods below a pink and teal sky against camping aliens is better than a lot of the alternatives.
Tumblr media
I've really missed this series’ skyboxes.
Tumblr media
Titan is definitely my favorite location to date. Even if it was giving me hard Gears of War 3 flashbacks, and most of the fights weren’t as good as Gears of War 3, trading empty expanses for narrow corridors and ledges was a nice change of pace.
Tumblr media
Destiny is also at its best when there’s extreme terraforming involved. In this case, Titan basically functions as a combination of Star Wars’ Cloud City and Minos.
Tumblr media
More teal! But also lemon yellows and sun baked sheet metal. There’s been a subtle shift in Destiny 2 toward big industrial equipment which, intentional or not, helps give some actual shape to some of the backstory about what civilization was up to before the fall. Giant turbines, hydro-pistons, and big alien drills draw a nice contrast with the sleek space ships and magic armor; more Alien than Star Trek.
Tumblr media
I’m not sure what exactly it is about the designs on Titan, but felt very IKEA to me. Maybe it was just the yellow, or the rain at sea on a rig (all of which I weirdly associate with Scandinavia). Between the first game’s old Russia Cosmodrone and Destiny 2′s European Dead Zone, it all feels a bit eurocentric.
Tumblr media
This is my favorite tunnel in the game so far. And there are a lot of tunnels.
Tumblr media
Skyboxes with giant planets in them are even better.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Seriously though, Titan’s the best.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The giant biodome has a very Logan’s Run feels to it and, assuming there are some interesting side missions, strikes, or (fingers crossed) and eventual raid there, it will immediately jump toward the top of my list of best post-apocalyptic malls.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
7066 Nessus is a small Vex rock, and as such, looked equal parts beautiful and re-used assets from Venus. The hazy teals and electric blues are once again in full effect, but I’m down with it. While the rest of the game seems content to double down on the “log on and shoot shit with your bros” appeal, the art direction in Destiny 2 commits much more strongly to the series’ trippy sci-fi vibes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The eye motif that follows the Vex around is one of my favorites, even if it makes Nessus look like the GLaDOS home world.
Otherwise, here are some quick thoughts so far, in no particular order:
The writing is bad. Destiny’s writing was mostly silly nonsense, but Destiny 2 tries to invoke this feeling of being under siege, especially in the beginning, that makes it feel like you’re supposed to be taking it all totally seriously
I’m not the only one to point this out, but anytime you tell the player not to die and then let them respawn seconds away the first time they die after that, there’s probably some holes in your design.
To that point, why even bother to Metroid the player if you’re going to re-introduce the bulk of their powers a few moments later with no interesting obstacles in-between? Not being able to run, jump, or throw grenades is a very jarring thing in Destiny, and yet that brief survival-horror sequence is played mostly as a walking sim. Normally that’s something I’d encourage, but in this particular type of situation, it seems to completely miss the point.
I’m so tired of loot boxes. Overwatch and PUBG have ruined us. Especially since most of the loot boxes that appear in Destiny 2 are full of tedious junk.
The environments are big and beautiful but still mostly empty. 99% of interactions boil down to “Hold square to spawn monster closets.”
You can tell Bungie really wanted to go for it this time in terms of the linear narrative, but it feels completely uneconomical given the dearth of plot throughout the rest of the game. Too many of the cutscenes don’t advance the story or tell me something I couldn’t have guessed before. More importantly, they don’t introduce more questions. This was a problem in the first game, but it feels even more acute in the second given its apparent emphasis on getting us to care about these characters and their struggle. Basically, every time Bungie has a chance to build out a mystery it chooses to make a bad joke instead.
It’s a sequel, so stuff is bound to be different, but I got the sneaking suspicion on more than one occasion that stuff was changed from the first game to the second simply to make the second feel like more of an upgrade. I don’t see the point of the new skill tree look, for instance. At bottom it’s still asking you to make the same trade-offs as before and not allowing you any greater degree of customization. While there are plenty of small graphical and quality of life improvements, there’s also an awful lot of crap that looks like it was given a fresh coat of paint just cause. Maybe that’s not a bad thing, but it feels hollow and overly conservative on Bungie’s part.
Finally, what’s up with Zavala and his crew scattering to the four corners of the solar system? Shaxx is on Earth still? Nathan Fillion (sorry, Cayde-6 literally doesn’t exist as a character) crash lands on a jumble of No Man’s Sky assets to look for a teleporter? One thing Destiny 2 has done a good (read: slightly better) job of is introducing a certain amount of skepticism and dissension within the ranks. The three principal Guardians all have slightly different priorities and interpretations of the game’s central premise (is that big ball in the sky good, bad, or indifferent?), and there are some regular old humans who think the City (run by the Guardians) was kind of a sham. It would have been easy to explore that tension more explicitly and then send Zavala et al scattering on account of those divisions. Instead, Destiny’s just like, yea they all ended up on random planets, guess you need to go track’em down *wink* *wink*.

The LEGO Batman Movie (2017), Logan (2017), and The Fate of the Furious (2017)

I’m at an age where many of my friends have become or will become parents. Since I was the first person in my peer circle to become a father, they sometimes turned to me to ask what advice, practical or philosophical, I could give about becoming a parent. By this point, I’ve refined my patter to a performance. I will consistently tell my friends, “Don’t have kids.” Either that draws them in further to inevitably ask why, or they take the words on the superficial level and move on with the conversation. If they ask why I, a father of a delightful kid, would say that, I ask if they want the practical or the philosophical reasons. The practical reasons are simple: having a child is a major financial commitment, a guarantee that you will never have a sound night of sleep ever again (and not just because an infant’s needs will interrupt your sleep), and a turning point in the relationship that you and your partner have. You and your partner’s relationship may not survive; the roles that you and you partner played in the relationship before you became parents will not be the roles that you will play after. The philosophical reasons are based in pessimism: if we accept that any actions that lead to the suffering of others is immoral, then having a child is an immoral act because human sentience means that we all live in constant pain born from a terror of knowing that our lives are finite. We are always dying. We die every second. In response to the absurd notion that we are born only so we can live to know that we will die, the most common options are: commit suicide, embrace the absurdity of life, or to recognize how absurd life is and rebel. How could you then morally justify creating life?
What could have been in the creative air to inspire three major blockbuster films (The LEGO Batman Movie, Logan, and The Fate of the Furious) from three different distributors (Warner Brothers, 20th Century Fox, and Universal Pictures, respectively) to tackle the ideas of family unity and fatherhood in three different ways? (And it’s noted that these three films offer their takes on fatherhood specifically, not parenthood.) I suppose it’s natural that someone will explore the paradoxical idea that characters like Batman and Wolverine, who are so often defined as loners who don’t believe that they deserve human connections to other people would actually have many relationships that form an extended family with characters who choose to be with them. In other words, you could imagine Batman, Wolverine, and Dominic Toretto each saluting their respective families with their beverages of choice.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Colorful and bombastic, The LEGO Batman Movie contextualizes the characters around Batman as his extended family. From Alfred the patriarch (voice by Ralph Fiennes) to Batman (Will Arnett) to Batman’s adopted son, Robin (Michael Cera), to Batman’s co-dependent nemesis, the Joker (Zach Galifianakis), to Batman and Joker’s extended work friends and acquaintances like Harley Quinn (Jenny Slate), Barbara Gordon (Rosario Dawson), and Clayface, the many bonds that Batman has with the world around him are highlighted in bright neon explosions. As Batman’s surrogate father and like a father who worries about his kid’s ability to make the right kind of friends at school or meet the right partner, Alfred worries about his charge’s ability to form social bonds that will sustain Batman if he were to ever die.
Tumblr media
The film’s inciting incident is Batman breaking the Joker’s heart by telling him that he means nothing to him; the movie ends with a play on romantic comedy beats by climaxing with Batman and the Joker telling each other that they hate each other. It’s the psychosexual dynamic between the two that Frank Miller famously explored in The Dark Knight Returns and Scott Snyder years later in “Death of the Family” sanitized for the elementary school set.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The cinematic versions of Batman always come around to embrace the idea that Batman isn’t the loner that he thinks he is. He travels with gods like Superman and Wonder Woman. In The LEGO Batman Movie, he craves the attention from his peers in the Justice League so badly that he has to put up a front to pretend that he doesn’t want it when he doesn’t get it. In other films, he actually founds the Justice League.
Tumblr media
He’s also a father figure, whether in the figurative sense (Batman’s vigilantism gives birth to a more demented class of villains, and his rogues slowly transition from mobsters to supervillains) in a more literal sense (Batman becomes the guardian to the various Robins over the years and the central figure in a cohort of vigilantes, from the Huntress to Spoiler to Red Hood to Batwoman to Batwing). Michael Cera’s performance as Robin in The LEGO Batman Movie makes the character guileless and eager to please than normal to contrast with the bravado that Will Arnett infuses into his Batman.
Like his bald counterpart in The LEGO Batman Movie (coincidentally portrayed by Ralph, another Englishman, Fiennes), Patrick Stewart’s Charles Xavier is concerned that Logan (Hugh Jackman) will lose his chance to reforge a connection to the wider world around him in Logan. Bitter, broken-hearted, and betrayed by his body, Xavier insists to Logan that there is still time for him to reconnect with the world after the rest of the X-Men were killed when Logan meets Laura (Dafne Keen). Logan, Laura, and Charles’s adventure across America remind Logan what a warm household full of affection, as the X-Mansion might have been once, looks like compared to the dusty and solitary existence he, Caliban (Stephen Merchant), and Charles lived in Mexico as he tried to raise enough money to go somewhere so he and Charles can die in peace. As Logan undergoes this journey and reforges connections, he travels from a dusty broken down industrial plant to a neon-bathed city to a corn farm and back to nature, his soul undergoing a revival even as his body continues its breakdown.
Both Logan and Batman begin their films as reluctant fathers, each haunted by loss and unable to figure out the hedgehog’s dilemma. Both are convinced that their lonely lives are the only ways that they can pass their days. Both are pushed by their surrogate father figures to bond with children who unexpectedly enter their lives. And both try to demonstrate their acceptance of the responsibility of fatherhood through sacrifice. Logan overdoses on a drug in order to protect Laura and her friends from a physical avatar of his wild past, while Batman volunteers to return to the Phantom Zone to honor the agreement he made with the Phantom Zone’s keeper that allowed him to return to save his fledgling family.
There’s a thrill to seeing Logan cut a bloody swath across the screen, but the film’s melancholy gives it a bitter taste. The shock of Logan cutting off an arm from a man who was trying to steal the tires from his rented limousine is undercut by how hard it was for the legendary Wolverine to fend off those four men. The excitement of Logan bearing his claws at Donald Pierce (Boyd Holbrook) and the Reavers is undermined by how ineffectual Logan is against them. You might be surprised that Logan is casually murdering Reavers who were trying to capture Xavier, but the surprise is subverted by the realization that the Reavers were completely defenseless and neutralized by Xavier’s psychic seizure. Logan facing down goons to help Will Munson (Eriq La Salle), a farmer that he helped on his journey, but his violence against the Reavers and the goons only brings more violence upon the Munsons, which leaves them all dead. In the climax, Logan is temporarily restored to his former vitality due to a healing serum, but by the end of that burst of violence, Logan can barely stand. Violence in Logan is a bittersweet fruit.
Tumblr media
Every time Logan fights the Reavers, they come back with more and stronger soldiers. When he faces them in Mexico, the Reavers have heavily armed Mexican police officers riding in SUVs. By the time that he faces them in North Dakota, the Reavers have armored trucks, jeeps with mounted machine guns, and a young feral clone of Logan. Nonetheless, Logan can’t help but feel fatherly pride during the climactic fight against the Reavers. Laura had already saved him once after he collapsed on the side of a highway by getting him medical attention. But he becomes proud of her when she fights to defend her friends against the Reavers, and they coordinate their attacks. They bond through violence because, as Xavier said, they’re very alike.
Tumblr media
The price of violence makes explicit the idea that becoming a parent raises the stakes. One might be tempted to quit an unsatisfactory, unfulfilling, underpaying job, but the income or health insurance from that job might be the only thing that protects your family from deprivation. One might be tempted to lash out at the world or to go it alone, but that might be the selfish thing to do.
James Mangold, the director of Logan and one of the screenwriters, along with Scott Frank and Michael Green, unintentionally struck political relevance in the current political climate. The film’s development began in 2013, and the screenplay was complete by early 2016, around the same time that Donald Trump was campaigning for President of the United States on a platform of xenophobia and racism. In the film’s opening scenes, we see Logan chauffering four young white men past a Mexico-US border checkpoint. They’re standing through the limo’s sunroof, chanting “USA!” at the immigrants waiting to pass the border. By March 2017, President Trump’s administration is floating trial balloons to test the idea of separating women and children who are caught crossing the Mexico-US border together. Laura and her friends are Mexican children whose humanity has been denied by a corporation so they can be experimented upon and trained to be weapons. As Donald Pierce references repeatedly throughout Logan, Laura and her friends are commodities, patented intellectual properties of the company that employs him. Whereas other X-Men stories would be metaphors about how the Other is demonized, here the Other is completely dehumanized. Principal photography for Logan ended in August 2016, but the idea that Laura and her friends are not seeking refuge in the United States because the United States is not a hospitable place for children born from Mexican mothers and the image that they are running toward the Canadian border to seek asylum make for accidentally potent juxtaposition.
While The LEGO Batman Movie and Logan present their protagonists in trigenerational families, The Fate of the Furious presents two different types of families. There’s the circle of friends that become a family that Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) often toasts with a bottle of Corona. Then, there’s also the son that he and Elena (Elsa Pataky) created during their relationship when he thought that Letty (Michelle Rodriguez) was dead. Dominic accepts fatherhood without reservation and is willing to betray his la familia in order to protect his biological family until he can find a way to save his son from Cipher (Charlize Theron, mostly underutilized in the film), a legendary cyberterrorist who is blackmailing Dominic to steal an EMP device, a Russian nuclear football, and a Russian nuclear submarine for her.
There is, of course, another father in la familia who is noticeably absent. Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker), Mia Toretto, and their son are written out of the film with a line delivered by Letty to explain that they cannot contact Brian for his help in subduing Dominic and capture Cipher. Within the context of the film, this allows Brian and Mia to raise their child in peace, though I cannot imagine that they would feel much peace watching news reports of the theft of an EMP device in Germany, the assault on a Russian defense minister in New York City, or the chaos in New York when la familia attempted to take Dominic down. Outside of that context, this allows Walker, a father himself, to live on through his character.
With Brian removed, The Fate of the Furious screenwriter has to pile the human pathos on to Dominic, Letty, and Elena, and the film creaks and moans under the pressure. Making Dominic a father certainly raises the stakes for him, and the film is focused only on what becoming a father would mean to Dominic. Unfortunately, the film again can only define Dominic’s fatherhood by his sacrifice of his honor and his betrayal of his familia; the film is completely uninterested in Elena’s experience or perspective as the child’s mother. Because the existence of Dominic and Elena’s son is a shock revelation, there’s no time for them to form a connection or for the viewer to form a connection to them. We feel sympathy for Dominic in theory (one can only imagine the horror of someone holding your child hostage and leveraging them to make you commit crimes and betray your loved ones), but the film tries to split our focus by making us feel the pain from Letty’s perspective as the loved one who is abandoned for unexplained reasons. It’s an attempt to give Dominic a shade of humanity, but it’s done only in abstract.
By comparison, we have a better sense of the surrogate paternal relationship between Mr. Nobody (Kurt Russell) and his trainee, Little Nobody (Scott Eastwood) or between Hobbs (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) and his daughter, Samantha (Eden Estrella). Hobbs is a devoted father to Samantha and a committed coach to her soccer team; the cinematic appeal of their relationship lies in Johnson’s charm and their characters’ shared history, which dates back to Furious 7. Even the Nobodies evoke a more real emotional reaction than Dominic and his son because we see how they interact with each other and how Mr. Nobody tries to teach Little Nobody the tricks of the trade.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Without the human connection, the spectacle of The Fate of the Furious felt hollow. I should have been wowed by remotely controlled cars barreling through New York City’s streets and raining from parking lots in skyscrapers, but I was bored. I should have been impressed when Dominic and company were racing across ice away from a nuclear submarine, but I was bored and almost nodding off. While the stakes for Dominic as a character were raised with his son’s introduction, the movie itself felt rote, from Cipher’s poorly outlined motivations to a moment that upends the importance of family that is the core of the franchise.
Dominic pays tribute to the bond between his peers that form la familia. However, there is dissonance in the way that Letty, Roman (Tyrese Gibson), and Tej (Chris “Ludacris” Bridges) seemed to have no objection to Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) joining the team. Shaw murdered Han Lue/Han Seoul-Oh and attempted to kill Dominic, Mia, Brian, and Mia and Brian’s son in Furious 7. Even though Dominic was desperate, contacting Deckard’s mother (Helen Mirren) in order to convince her to persuade Deckard and Owen Shaw (Luke Evans), who has his own disagreeable history with Dominic and company, to save Dominic’s son seemed to betray Han’s memory and to put aside the threats that were made to his family.
The LEGO Batman Movie, Logan, and The Fate of the Furious presented their respective protagonists in non-traditional families. Batman adopts Robin, and they form a trigenerational family with Alfred. Logan becomes Laura’s de facto guardian, and they form a trigenerational family with Xavier. Dominic, Letty, and Dominic’s biological son form a blended family. Indeed, the only traditional nuclear families that we see in these films are the Waynes, which is broken when Batman’s parents are murdered, and the Munsons in Logan.
You could strain to draw a connection between how casually the Munsons are killed to how dystopian the world in Logan is, but the Munsons’ deaths feel almost cruel. From the moment that Logan stops the truck to help them wrangle their horses, the audience begins to wait for the Munsons to die. It gives the otherwise tranquil scenes of Logan, Xavier, and Laura observing what a normal family looks like as they dine together suspenseful tension. Their deaths for doing nothing more than extending hospitality to Logan, Xavier, and Laura felt like a manipulative exercise in cynicism and nihilism. They’re collateral damage in Logan’s violence trap, and the viewer empathizes with Will Munson when he pulls the trigger on Logan after they’ve incapacitated X-24, the younger, feral clone of Logan that was sent to subdue and capture Laura. With his dying breath, Will doesn’t distinguish between X-24 and Logan because they are both monsters that trampled the Munsons’ lives. That the gun’s chamber was empty only emphasizes that violence, even in the cynical world of Logan, isn’t a solution.
Tumblr media
Finally, if we accept the notion that becoming a parent is one of the few rites of passage into adulthood left in today’s America, then the other side of that passage is observing your own parents’ decline and eventual death. In Logan, Charles Xavier is suffering Alzheimer’s disease, and Logan and Caliban are Xavier’s sole caregivers. When Xavier doesn’t recognize Logan, he is afraid of him because, to Xavier, Logan is the person who drugs him into unconsciousness. When Xavier is awake and lucid enough to recognize Logan, he berates him for being a disappointment. Xavier’s seizures cause Logan physical pain, and his words cause Logan emotional pain. Xavier is angry at himself and Logan because he needs Logan’s help with something as fundamental as using the bathroom; Logan is resentful for Xavier’s role in the Westchester incident, the physical and emotional pain that Xavier causes him, and the fact that he has to take care of his father figure in his decline.
It was curious to me that three different and big budget films released within two months of each other wove in different ideas about fatherhood into their tales. Each film tried to examine its respective protagonist through the lens of fatherhood and came away with slightly different conclusions. Batman, for as much as he describes himself to be a loner, is character with myriad connections. Logan, another self-professed loner, can’t help but to connect to his daughter when they both do what they do best, even though what they do isn’t very nice and could trap them in cycles of violence. Dominic, a man who talks constantly about his familia, showed that his biological family is ultimately more important to him than the friends and peers around him.

does anyone wonder if thats the line she uses in bed? no? sorry
So good and evil challenge, GREAT! Love these
Niko’s hair update: It seems the same height, but a little spread
Cool idea for a challenge, good and evil in one person, let’s go!!
This episode could also double for “every contestant’s backstory” episode
Evan delivers confessionals so stoic and plain it actually sucks some life out of me
I mean they are both in danger of going home today and he’s like “This is the only opportunity of creating a really cool makeup we dont want to be on the bottom this week. I don’t want to go home. No. Not at all”
I think I’ve seen Melissa’s design before, in a horror challenge from season 6 I think
The one with a Teletubbie ring on the head
Tumblr media
Okay, picture the above creature but with some gold color on top, that’s the design they’re gong for and I think it’s a good idea
Stella wants to like, destroy the creature anatomically
YOU’RE GOING TO DESTROY YOURSELF IF YOU TRY TO SCREW WITH ANATOMY
GLENN WILL BE LIKE POW! RIGHT IN THE KISSER
Adam’s getting some highlights this episode when I felt he didn’t get a lot last episode, cool!
Was he always this serious tho?
Happy Birthday Tyler Green!!
I love Team Funny’s ideas, Love it! Hope it looks good ebcause I’ll be drawing that
Okay I thought fo sure Team Benevan was going home but Team Sassy don’t look too good today
THey came up with a decent idea
Oooh Team Talent have a really interesting concept
“THAT’S DOOOPE” - Says Emily as she hits a blunt and dabs
YEA THAT REALLY HAPPENED
Okay no it didn’t
Oh I ahven’t seen Ben this worried
Learn from Nora Ben, she could totally redo herself if she was doubting
LET NORA GIVE YOU POWERSSS
Tumblr media
I wake up like this in the morning
I wish people were a little more creative this episode instead of being “One Half Evil, One Half Bad!”
To be fair if I were on time constraints that tight I wouldn’t think out of the box that quick
I love when Westmore walks in and the thing that Team Rage presents is just a mascara on a mannequin
Tumblr media
Logan and Adam seem to be doing the dullest of ideas right now, it looks like a simple warrior
MICHAEL WESTMORE SCREWS TEAM SASSY OVER
That was savage, they were doubting themselves already and he comes like “WHAT IS THIS?!!”
Mold Drama today??
Who knew sassy ladies were a bit stubborn??
TYLER’S PARTY!!!!!
I LOVE HOW THEY SET UP A CASUAL PARTY FOR HIM HAHAHA
“Tyler come here a little, come chill out with us! what a tiring day huh, it sure wooould be grrreeeeat if someone brought in some CUPCAKES!”
That was so sweet
THEY EVEN MADE HIM A CARD
Tumblr media
You can kindaa see a bit of what everyone put in there, seem like standard happy birthdays and a You Rock!
“From Your Second Family <3″ makes my heart melt though
It seemd a little bit acted out
Tumblr media
NIKO “JOGGING” GONZALES
Team Love are wearing matching exercise outfits for all the RUNNING THEY’LL HAVE TO DO IN THE LAB TODAY
I lvoe Keaghlans shining blue outfit today
Keaghlan just made a huge amazing devil voice
Like the deepest “NOO!” you can imagine
“The devil just came out of me”
I’M GETTING TO KNOW YOU KEEGS, YOU’RE AWESOME
The episode keeps flashbacking to Team Benevans Long Daddy Legs alien and its hilarious
Team are making really cool hands and fingers everywhere
Mold Drama!!!!
I think Stella opened it too early, damn
Team Sassy in danger!
“I have no fight left in me” Aw man, first time I’ve seem someone completely give up, it’s sad that it’s Stella
You know what I’ve always appreciated? I love how the show tells us the things the contestants use to make these makeups, I love learning how Niko makes wings
Holy moly Team Funny are doing some seriously creative stuff
Thanks for the church window lifehack, Cig!
STELLA GETS A BREAK, FINALLY
She’s moving a mile a minute
TEAM Benevean are really proud of what they’re doing
That’s really important to believe in your makeup
Tumblr media
I’m digging this creature a lot so far
God knows the judges love fancy spiral work
Team Love are also doing really amazing paintjobs
AND THEY’RE LEARNING NOT TO BREAK A MAKEUP EXACTLY DOWN THE MIDDLE
Neville Page hates that stuff
THIS IS THE RUSH HOUR NOW, LAST LOOKS
I seriously love Gage, I thinks he thinks the most like me
Nope
I’m fully convinced Stella and Jasmine are going home today
All their edit today was downhill and they’re not happy at all
The editors even left us in the dark for it to be revealed in the stage instead of a little sneak peak
Time to take a look now
AND STELLA AND JASMINES ARE THE FIRST ONE TO SOME ON
It looks better than I thought but it looks so, bland and normal, specially compared to the ideas the other teams have, though sometimes that can be for the better. Their makeup has killer paintjob and details though!
The chest piece is preeeety awful though, like, really out of place awful, and it has no color
And it looks silly, yeah, it looks like they didn’t finish painting it.
Tumblr media
OH. MY. GOD
NEVILLE JUST HAD THE MOST EVIL, MEAN AND DISAPPOINTED LOOK I’VE EVER SEEN ON HIM
LOOK. AT. THIS. GEM
Tumblr media
I AM SO AFRAID OF THIS NEVILLE PAGE
HE EVEN DID A MENACING BREATH
Stella: “and maybe we will be safe! I don’t know!”
Neville: *mean face*
I can see all the rage forming on his head, I can hear his words through his teeth, I can see my self looking at those eyes, full of hatred, and pissing my pants like Jason from Season 9 whenever Glenn Hetrick said his name
Tumblr media
The Master of Terrified reactions has come back, everybody!!! Long time I haven’t used you Jason, welcome back!!!
Okay Ben really knows how to pull gold celestial makeup so his angel looks GREAT
I think his devil could have used a little more
Tumblr media
I CAN BE YOUR ANGLE.... AND YOUR DEVIL
Team Funny’s stone sculpting is GORGEOUS but if I didn’t know what it was about I would be pretty confused
HOLY SHIT!!! EMILY AND TYLERS CREATION IS BEAU- TI- FUL
Love it, love at first sight, love IT
It totally nails the challenge and it’s just, magnificent
It’s like something from Season 5
Tumblr media
I like the way it goes from perfect arches to crooked putrid remains,  I love the different colored eyes and the gray pupil, it’s like something mythical. I love mythical ceratures on FaceOff. This is right up my alley!
I hope the judges love it because I do, so much
Logan and Adm’s creation is pretty awful and silly
It looks like it belongs on another challenge
The 80′s wig is pretty out of place there, too
It has some things on the face but it can’t really read that well from afar, I think it’s too skin-colored
The chest piece is cool tho
I’m not sure about the hand coming out of the neck
Tumblr media
TEAM BLUE’S MAKEUP is also pretty great looking, great color sceme and design.
OH MY GOD, THE EYE CHEST PIECE TOTALLY WORKS
One of the most creative chest pieces for sure, man I really like this makeup as well
I’m not sure who sould be Top Spot at this point
Tumblr media
I really like the ring on the head too, good job, Melissa and Keegs.
Team Rage made something that I presume will be safe, it’s pretty safe looking
Team LOVE’s makeup has a GREAT color sceme but I think the wings are too high
Tumblr media
Does it fly with her EARS???
Love the paintjob on it though, great, GREAT contrast
The wings are AMAZING too, so
Good on Cat for making the call for the feathers!
Glenn says Team Sassy’s chest piece looks like it was just pasted with glue, it’s true
And I hadn’t noticed but the horns do look too squishy lmao
TEAM FUNNY HAS A DEMON FACE ON THE SHOULDER I DIDN’T SEE EITHER, that’s pretty creative
Tumblr media
Glenn has a point in that the makeups feels very Native American, i had that on the back of my mind but didn’t know exactly what i reminded me of
Thanks Glenn!
The judges LOVE the arch creature, LOVE IT
The judges also LOVE team LOVE’S makeup!! I’m glad!!
Niko and Cat really do make an amazing team together
Did they skip Team Blue’s makeup??? I don’t recall any critiques of it
Team Love and Team Talent on Top
Team Logam and Team Sassy on bottom, those are my bets
I went back a bit and yep, they skipped Team Blue’s makeup, certainly safe
WOAH This is weird, there are 5 people in the BEst and Worst
It usually is in pairs
I think it’s because Ben and Evan were on danger last week but did alright this week so it was just to recall who is in danger
Their makeup is pretty alright
The judges do like it
Jasmine and Stella are definitely going home, how sad
Tumblr media
God the love angel looks so beautiful from afar
I like this shot of Logan and Adam, hold on
Tumblr media
Like “Yep. We fucked up”
Logan even does an eyebrow disa`ppointment look
Team Talent is so POWERFUL
THE BACK WINGS ARE AWMAZING I HADNT SEEM THEM
Tumblr media
I love how sad they look, and I love that they’re gold
Man this was just very beautiful
Oh man I’m not ready for Glenn to bash Stella and Jasmine
It breaks me, it really breaks me
Stella looks very sad, like she’s about to cry
I can’t take this
Tumblr media
However, I’m gonna love seeing Cat and Niko get praised
Go Team So-Sweet-You’re-giving-me-Diabetes!!
VE NEILL CANT CONTAIN HER GLEE AT HOW AWESOME SHE FINDS THIS ANGEL!!
And even she says this is the best beauty makeup she’s ever seen on the show, GOD yes!
I like seeing them get praised because  on other places they were so bashed, and I feel like sometimes it went too far. Like Cat had great talent but was put on a horror-themed season (and even then she failed on the most fantastical of challegnes, how ironic) but I liked her, Niko made it all the way to 4th but everyone said it was a fluke and that he got lucky everyone else just did worse than him all the time and that he was just a pretty face, but together they seem really great so far.
It makes me feel nice, totally rooting for them
Tumblr media
“I THINK ITS AWESOME *HEH*”
Love Ve Neill’s laugh
And God knows she loves big wings
HAHAHAHAHAHAH
NE VEILL PAGE POINTING OUT HOW NIKO’S HAIR IS RIDICULOUSLY DEFYING OF ALL KNOWN PHYSICS
“Big, Profoundly Strong in regards to his silhouette,  and defying the laws of physics, I’m referring to your hair.” - Ne Veill “No Hair Up There” Page
“How the hell do you do it, man!” - Neville “Bald Mage” Page
I think he always wanted to make this joke since Season 6
I mean even after all these years HE STILL HAS THE SAME HAIRSTYLE
Tumblr media
Poor guy just wants to have hair,
Tumblr media
I also love this Nevilla Page reactions picture, by the way.
“BIG!”
Neville is impressed at the SIZE
the TECHNIQUE
the SILHOUETTE
the ANATOMY
the CORRECTNESS OF THE WINGS
I love Neville Page so much
They totally spot the highlight from Glenn
I think Niko and Cat are totally winning this
“His horns looked like SLUGS!” - Ve Neill, made me chuckle
Just the way she said it
Its painfully obvious Jasmine and Stella are going home, no need to hide it
I’m surprised they didn’t mention Team Talent on top
Cat n’ Niko have to win this
AND THEY DO!! I’M SO HAPPY!!!!
Cat finally wins something!!!!! YESSS!!!
“YAH WE WIN!!! IT AHSOM!!!” - NIKO’S HAPPY EXPRESSIONS ARE HILARIOUS, i love youuu
It’s sad this is Stella and Jasmine’s second chance, like
Really sad
Too soon
Goodbye, sassy girls
Stella shrugs it off but I know she is very sad
Jasmine has the same facial expression as ever
Tragic second chance
Also I wish Jasmine was focused on more
I feel like I didn’t see her at all
Well I was rooting for her so much since I thought the Gauntlet was a bit unfair ro Jazz but well, she didn’t really show up in here
See ya next time everybody!
And yes, Stella cried
Tumblr media
CONCLUSION:
What. a. great. episode. The first half of building and sculpting went by pretty normal, standard, almost looking like a middle of the road episode but the second half had me stitches, it was so funny and the judges seem to be enjoying themselves more and more and I love that! Neville is letting his comedic side take over, Ve Neill isn’t afraid to express how happy she feels about a makeup and Glenn makes a great stoic to contrast the funnier judges, also the makeups the teams created were astounding! Agree with the top spot, I’m so glad that Team LOVE are finding their ground and the elimination was also very fair, I thought Stella and Jasmine had some serious talent to show everyone else but I think it was the team dyamic of that season what did them in, I think they’re better individually, (Stella more so), but you gotta get with the times.

Interior Design Ideas
Hello, my friends! It’s wonderful to have you on Home Bunch today. I am excited to share this newly-built home because I feel it has so many inspiring interior design ideas.
Located in Western Springs, Illinois, this family home was recently built by Timber Trails Development Company and with interiors by Julie Howard. If you’ve read the blog for a while, you might recall seeing another home designed by them here not too long ago. In fact, that one has became a very popular blog post on the blog and on Pinterest.
What I love most about this home is the navy blue kitchen and the millwork used throughout the house. I feel that these elements really create beautiful backdrops to the fine furnishings.
Now, leave the world behind and get ready to daydream and get totally inspired by these beautiful interior ideas.

Decor
Kitchen decor are a combination of HomeGoods, Mcgee and Target.
Blue Navy Kitchen
We had a few possible buyers come through and express that they were tired of white kitchens. Since that’s the majority of what we create, we thought we’d better incorporate some color and wood and see how it goes. When choosing a color, Navy Blue seemed to be the right choice as it reads as a neutral. Navy goes with everything when you’re putting outfits together; navy works in interiors much the same way. Navy is so easy going with other colors and styles. We couldn’t be happier with the result!
Wall color is Benjamin Moore Classic Grey OC-23.
Appliances
The kitchen has 4 ovens and is designed for someone who loves to cook.
Appliances are all Thermador – Similar Refrigerator, Range, Ovens.

The kitchen has 4 ovens and is designed for someone who loves to cook.

Living Room
This room is about 30×17′ with 10′ ceilings. It is huge! To bring detail and coziness to the large space, Julie designed a coffered ceiling and a fireplace mantel that drew your eye up to the ceiling detail. The cased openings surrounding the room also pull it in so the room feels cozy and not one huge open space into the kitchen. Sometimes just dropping a header and pulling wing walls in does the trick from turning an open floor plan that feels cold into a warm inviting space.

Master Bedroom
The master bedroom has a beautiful tray ceiling. Instead of the typical expected application of grey on walls and white on the ceiling, the designer wanted to switch it around. She added panel molding to the walls and sprayed the whole room Benjamin Moore Simply White. Then she painted the ceiling Ozark Shadows by Benjamin Moore (her favorite true grey paint color). The beautiful ivory shade light fixture completes the room.
