ON THIS DAY: In 1994, the Formula 1 season concluded at Adelaide with the Australian GP, an event that turned out to be an extremely controversial one. The race itself was won by Nigel Mansell of Williams, with Gehard Berger finishing in 2nd place and Martin Brundle ending the day in 3rd. Despite this turning out to be Mansell's final ever F1 race victory, much of the post-race attention was on Michael Schumacher and Damon Hill we a result of their exploits from earlier in the race. - Mansell had started on pole position for Williams, but instantly found himself overtaken by team-mate Hill and Schumacher, who took the lead. Schumacher then began stretching out his lead and remained at the front until Lap 36. At this point, 'Schumi' went off at East Terrace corner, hitting the wall and severely damaging his Benetton car. This brought Hill right up alongside the German driver but, as he went to make the pass, Schumacher turned in on him. The contact between the pair (shown top picture) eliminated Schumacher from the race on the spot. - Damon Hill attempted to continue in his Williams, but pitted and was also forced into retiring from the race as he'd sustained a broken suspension. The incident meant that Schumacher became World Drivers' Champion, for the first time. Despite claims from Schumacher that the incident was accidental, many F1 insiders and fans alike still feel that Schumacher hit Hill deliberately to procure the 1994 title. - As previously mentioned, the race marked Nigel Mansell's 31st and final ever F1 race victory. Also, on this day, the Lotus name was seen in F1 for the final time until 2010. "A surfer I met before the race taught me the phrase 'too easy mate' and it sums up this race", said Damon Hill, immediately after the 1995 Australian GP. The race, which ended the '95 season and marked the final time that F1 visited the Adelaide circuit, saw Hill take victory for Williams by a huge margin of over 2 laps. Despite the race turning out to be an extremely easy victory for Hill, this was largely the case due to incidents involving other front-runners as only 8 cars managed to reach the finish line in an attritional event. - Michael Schumacher and Jean Alesi came together on Lap 23, ending their attempts to take victory as well as their involvement in the race. A multitude of other cars hit trouble as Berger, Frentzen, Brundle, Coulthard, Irvine and many more retired from the race and left Damon Hill as the last front-runner standing. Olivier Panis, who finished the race in 2nd place for Ligier Mugen-Honda, was already a lap down on Hill when his car began suffering from the effects of an oil leak, late in the race. - Hill passed Panis again, to leave the Frenchman 2 laps down on the leader. Gianni Morbidelli (pictured below) rounded off the podium, taking 3rd place and his best ever F1 result for Footwork-Hart. Mark Blundell was 4th for McLaren, Tyrrell's Mika Salo finished 3 laps down on Hill in 5th place and Pedro Lamy, of Minardi, took 6th place and the final point. - Forti's Pedro Diniz and Bertrand Gachot, driving for Pacific Ford, were the only finishers who failed to score points. #accaddeoggi - 1 maggio 1994, Gran Premio di San Marino. Il primo maggio di ventisei anni fa ebbe luogo la gara più controversa e drammatica della storia della Formula 1 dell'epoca moderna, contraddistinta da una serie di incidenti che cambiarono il modo di concepire la sicurezza dei piloti e degli addetti ai lavori in pista. Subito al via Pedro Lamy colpì la Benetton di J.J.Lehto, provocando l'entrata della Safety Car. Dopo un paio di giro dietro la vettura di sicurezza la gara ripartì, ma dopo sole due tornate fu il leader della corsa Ayrton Senna ad uscire di pista. La Williams del pilota brasiliano subì il cedimento del piantone dello sterzo e alla curva del Tamburello andó dritta impattando ad oltre 200 km/h contro il muro. Senna fu colpito da un pezzo di sospensione e, sfortunatamente non riuscì mai a riprendersi, morendo alle 18.20 all'Ospedale Maggiore di Bologna. Incredibilmente la gara fu ripresa con una seconda partenza dopo oltre una mezz'ora dall'incidente, e il vincitore fu decretato in base alla somma dei tempi. A dieci giri dal termine l'ennesimo terribile incidente di giornata: una delle ruote della Minardi di Michele Alboreto si distaccó mentre il pilota milanese si apprestava a rimettersi in pista, rimbalzando ad alta velocità all'interno della pit lane e colpendo alcuni meccanici, fortunatamente senza conseguenze fatali. In questo clima surreale la gara proseguì comunque, decretando la terza vittoria consecutiva di Michael Schumacher davanti alla Ferrari di Nicola Larini (sostituto dell'infortunato Jean Alesi) e alla Mclaren di Mika Hakkinen. #accaddeoggi - 30 aprile 1995, Gran Premio di San Marino. In una gara pazza, condizionata dall'asfalto viscido e da numerosi incidenti tra cui quello del poleman di giornata Michael Schumacher, a vincere fu Damon Hill sulla Williams Renault. Jean Alesi e Gerhard Berger illusero i tifosi ferraristi presenti sul tracciato imolese lottando per la vittoria. Il pilota austriaco della Ferrari comandó la gara dopo il ritiro di Schumacher, ma lo spegnimento del motore della sua vettura dopo la sosta ai box lo fece scivolare al terzo posto dietro Hill e Alesi. L'avignonese fu invece rallentato da un prolungato duello con David Coulthard, che si concluse con un tamponamento e una successiva sosta ai box in cui lo scozzese superó i limiti di velocità tentando di scavalcarlo rimediando uno stop&go di 10 secondi. Mika Hakkinen e Heinz-Harald Frentzen completarono la zona punti. Nigel Mansell, tornato al volante della Mclaren Mercedes dopo aver saltato i primi due appuntamenti della stagione per la scarsa competitività della monoposto, dovette accontentarsi della decima posizione finale.
