Cornelia saw her siblings less often since her marriage, so showing up at Peggy’s home with a basket of muffins in tow was, in her mind, a given. Her wait at the door, rocking on her heels, was spent considering how long it had been since she had truly spent time with Peggy. Their age difference had always been a factor and, when combined with marriage, had meant that their time together had been significantly reduced recently.

The door opened and she beamed, lifting the arm that her basket hung on. “I know it’s a bit of a surprise, but I’ve missed you, and I baked these to ensure you couldn’t reject me.” A joke, punctuated by the amused twinkle in her eye and a wide smile. “Tell me you aren’t too busy to spare me your afternoon. We surely have stories and gossip to share.”

And, of course, there was the fact that they were still only engaged. Her mother would have Alexander’s head if she caught them.

Still, she muffled a moan into the bare skin of his neck, teeth faintly pressing into the soft skin. “Oh, you’ve made a terrible woman of me, Lieutenant Colonel,” she panted into his ear as if it had not been she who had dragged him into the room. “But do not misunderstand me,” she whispered, leaning back to meet his eyes as her legs pulled him deeper, “I have no issue with that. None at all.”

They would have a life together. “And you are mine, my husband,” she murmured, catching his lips in a kiss. Her Alexander. Eliza was gleeful when she pulled back, though she tapped the tip of his nose with her index finger.

“Do not forget that my family is also your own now. Mother and Father would have it no other way. You will soon have regrets, though,” her tone shifted to joking. “My sisters are quite cruel to their brothers. They now must make up for lost time with you.”

For all the bonding, mostly over letters, they had done, it still made it no stranger for John to be pulled into an embrace by Elizabeth—Eliza—upon opening the door, quickly whisked down the hall and, inevitably, to the study that Alexander occupied. “And to think,” Eliza began, unceremoniously pushing John into the room with a cheery tone, “you had thought he’d spend another month at war. I told you he would arrive sooner.”

Her sudden quietness coincided with John crossing over to Alexander, heart in his throat. Alexander. Months apart. Sleeping alone had felt like missing a piece of himself. Sure, it was a strange situation, Alexander’s wife right behind him and fine with their situation. Nevertheless, he leaned over the desk and tipped Alexander’s chin up into a kiss. Finally back by his beloved’s side. He could have crawled into his lap, but the present company made him hesitant. Instead, he broke the kiss, nose pressed to Alexander’s cheek as he held him close. “My boy,” he murmured.

Eliza cleared her throat. John was no fool—she was just as nervous about their new circumstances as he was. “Well, should we have tea and chat or do you two... need some time alone? We can always talk a bit later.” A small wave of discomfort ran through John; her knowledge of their intimacy would not feel normal for a long while. He glanced at Alexander for the answer, hand combing a loose piece of his hair behind his ear.

It was a miracle to be clean, the two having used the excuse of heading into town to leave camp. Instead, they had trailed down to a lake, far enough from both town and camp to make being there an incredibly foolish risk... and simultaneously the best decision John had ever made.

At least in his own, insufferably aroused opinion.

He waded through the water, positioning himself behind Alexander and pressing his form flush against his back. He was obviously hard, but he had had no intention of being subtle regardless. “I tire of our situation. Little time to have you and, even when I may, needing to stay quiet.” His hands trailed around Alexander’s hips, nose bumping behind his ear. “We’re far from all others,” he whispered, fingers dancing across Alexander’s lower stomach. He was nothing if not a tease.

“I brought a bit of oil in my pack.” He may as well have said, “I planned our escapade ahead of time.” He pressed lazy kisses across Alexander’s neck and the back of his shoulder. “I need you more than ever.”

It was a crisp evening, a golden glow to the world as John wrapped an arm around Alexander and tugged him to his side by the waist. “Finally, cool weather. I have plenty of excuses to never let you be.” He wasn’t cold at all in reality, bundled in a thick coat, but that mattered little. He had a reason to hold Alexander while they rounded the home. He stopped them in front of a pile of leaves that he had raked up.

Gesturing down at it, he asked, “I believe I did a decent enough job. It appears almost... cozy.” And in one, swift movement he shoved Alexander into the pile, following him down with laughter. “Don’t be angry,” he begged breathlessly, a burst of wind catching some of the leaves and scattering them as John attempted to press a kiss to the bridge of Alexander’s nose.
