kind of wonder how much of the contingent having a huge backlash against Lily Gao as Ada Wong in RE4R is actually valid (ie live-action movie actor inexperienced in VA takes on video game role and doesn’t come out of it very well) and how much of it is just plain old racism

I have watched the first 5 episodes of RE Netflix. So far, while it’s not perfect, I actually enjoyed it overall, but I have reservations because there’s a lot of unanswered questions and what those answers are will change a lot. Could turn out to be a solid 4/5 despite its flaws as there were a lot of moments I love...OR those last 3 episodes COULD totally ruin it. I don’t know.
I AM relieved that Wesker is definitely actually Black and NOT a white guy in a Black guy’s body in this AU.
When I have watched them all I will post episode by episode reviews.
--SPOILERS-- under the cut
However, I will say this: this is the first RE adaptation where Wesker is a scientist, the first where he works for Umbrella but ISN’T loyal to them, and the first where he knew William Birkin. 3 very low bars, but neither the Anderson films nor WTRC managed to clear any of them. That at least was nice to see.
(OK, I actually went AAAAA in a friend’s DMs when it was mentioned that he kept a bunch of research papers by William Birkin on his laptop. The Anderson films ignored Will completely and WTRC had them kill each other, I’m hoping for their canon friendship to be in the backstory here.)
There are definitely some moments where he acts very differently to canon Wesker BUT the show also places quite a bit of emphasis on how good he is at deception and acting like a totally different person when he needs to, just like he did at STARS--he convinces the kids he’s their nice, normal dad for years; convinces the cops he’s a helpless ordinary scientist; etc. I can’t conclude just how close he REALLY is to canon Wesker until his actual motivations are fully revealed.
There are some moments I loved--I genuinely enjoy him being protective of the kids (while still far from a good dad given how much he lies to them and how distant he can be) and I don’t think him caring about the kids is inherently OOC at all, I love the Moonlight Sonata scene...I laughed when I saw him eating an egg...
I promise my full reviews will include other aspects of the show and not JUST Wesker.

are you kidding me leon s. kennedy was characterized fucking perfectly in wtrc im still reeling.
he was the perfect blend of pretty, clueless, and just a touch “sick of everything” unhinged. him listening to “crush” by jennifer paige while dosing with his legs kicked up onto the desk as a semi truck blows up right outside the station and a flaming man walks in... not knowing how to work a shotgun and needing claire to take it from him... constantly asking what the fuck is going on.... pulling a rocket launcher out of nowhere at the end and slaughtering birkin without hesitation... all of it came together and made this version of leon probably my favorite iteration of him to date, if that isnt too controversial of me to say
i hope each and every one of leon’s diehard edgelord hypermasculine fans cried, threw tomatoes at the screen, then subsequently got up and walked out in the middle of the movie because we won. we won.
edit: I forgot to add the scene in the prison where he DESTROYS a zombie with bullets while screaming in bloody murder. he was FED UP with being confused it was time to Kill and Maim

some things i absolutely loved and absolutely hated about Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City
Spoilers under the cut:
Loves:
1) The sets. They made the movie extremely immersive. Most of the effects were practical, and the sets were recreated straight from the games. The RPD Station, the underground parking lot, the diner, Spencer's mansion, the Arklay Mountains, the orphanage-- all of it looked amazing and felt real.
2) The soundtrack. All of the throwback music that was popular in 1998. Bonnie Tyler, Journey, Leon passed out listening to Crush by Jennifer Paige. It just worked.
3) The Spencer Mansion sequence. It felt like it was ripped straight from the games, with the added bonus of being live-action and therefore more real. Chris's heavy breathing as he fought to stay alive, the sweat dripping from his face, the crazed look in his eyes. Jill rescuing Chris and them immediately embracing in relief. Wesker playing the piano to open the secret door to the labs. It was PERFECT.
Hates:
1) How they portrayed Leon. Leon is characterized as extremely incompetent and is essentially useless throughout the movie. His background story for being in Raccoon City is that he accidentally shot his partner, and his dad, a high-ranking official, saved his ass by shipping him off as a rookie to Raccoon rather than facing the consequences of his actions at home. Claire saves his ass multiple times (it's not mutual like in the games), and everyone talks down to him. It really feels they made his character super weak to bolster Claire's position as the badass protagonist. It was unnecessary and unfortunate, especially because he was played by Avan Jogia (who was wonderfully cast and did a great job playing Leon even if the script wasn't it). It really felt like a 'white woman competence vs brown boy idiocy' trope. Avan Jogia and Leon Kennedy deserve better.
2) Raccoon City being a dying ghost town. This was NOT IT for me. Part of the chaos of the games is how _thriving_ Raccoon City is before the outbreak. Having most of the citizens gone before the outbreak reduces the impact of the destruction of the city. So many people died because of Umbrella-- it was a horrific tragedy. There was no need to take that out of the plot.
3) How Chris treats Claire. I can accept the Orphan AU, hell I can accept the Birkin Is My Psuedo Dad AU, but I couldn't accept how callously Chris treated Claire when she first finds him. She is clearly the black sheep of the family, and he's the golden boy but it felt so so wrong.

You’ve been traveling with this disaster rookie cop all day and you were pretty sure he was sane.
Tumblr media
You were pretty sure. Almost positive.
Tumblr media
You’ve been with him the entire day. You had to remind him to put on a bullet proof vest. He’s like 12

Feminism! The brown guy is dumb and incompetent and has to be repeatedly saved by the white woman despite the fact that canonically they should be equals!

wtrc thoughts
⚠️ spoilers for resident evil: welcome to raccoon city below !!!!
OK SO omg ….. that was an experience. i think my overall rating is 6/10. i enjoyed it a lot, and i think it was a lot better than the previous resident evil films, but i do feel like it was very rushed and not a super satisfying ending.
- what they did with wesker felt sort of… weird? i liked him a lot, but i feel like trying to give wesker more dimensions isn’t necessary.
- why was ada only in there for like a minute. cmon y’all coulda done better w her
- birkin felt very toned down. he should of, imo, been more unhinged before infecting himself. also why did the nerf annette? sherry felt less sympathetic bc her parents clearly cared about her a lot, which takes away from the whole point of her arc with claire
- i REALLY loved leon. like so much. avan did a BRILLIANT job with him, and i’m really glad they portrayed them more like he was in the original re2.
- i really liked jill!!! i think her characterization was more like her in re3 instead of remake, but she was super fun to watch
- a lot of the stuff felt sort of haphazardly stuck together. like, the police station keys opening the elevator to the lab? or the random ashford twins cameo? or the itchy tasty scene? i understand they didn’t have time to develop everything, but i feel like some of those details would be better just left out.
- i will say that i do like what they did with lisa trevor. it’s cool to see her get more… i dunno, recognition? she was a really tragic character and i think they could have done better with her and her backstory but i’m just glad she was there. also seeing her kill a licker was super cool.
- the ending felt kinda abrupt and not very satisfying.
overall, it was a decent movie, but could have been better. i think avan’s leon was one of the highlights. the cast got on well, and i liked the dynamics between characters. but i do think they could have done better plot wise, maybe just doing one game instead of two? it felt sorta rushed, like they were trying to fit too much into one movie.

I watched the Resident Evil movie (wish i didn't but here we are)
Chris is a cardboard of Max Steel
Jill is trigger happy and in love with Wesker (would not mind this if Wesker had the same character arc)
Wesker isn't the man behind it all but just some guy that wants to leave
Claire becomes the main character which means a lot of other character's skills go to her.
Leon is turned into an useless drunk who's dad is covering up for him. Of course he can't load a shotgun or even shoot properly despite being a trained officer. He's stupid so we can prop up the white girl.
The Birkins have no use. William is there for a boss fight. Anette goes from evil genius in the games to screaming caring mother in the movie. Sherry does nothing.
Chief Irons isn't disgusting enough
No Ada which means no character development for Leon. But it's ok because in this version Ada is a girlboss above Wesker! She's the villain! That's so progressive of us!
Well, it was awful. Why is it so hard to make a movie inside a mansion and then make a second one in the city? You don’t have to cram 10 characters and 20+ hours of story into a 2h movie.

The Berkins are sidelined. Sherry is in it and runs into Jill. William is suggested to be a father figure to Chris but is a total asshole to him for no reason. And he runs experiments on children in the Orphanage.
thanks anon! also L M A F O wiliiam father figure to chris????????????????????????????????????????? holy crap they really thought that just because the characters were there that they could anything and it'd still be "faithful" lollllllllll this is beyond ridiculous...

welcome to raccoon city was a fun movie if you dont think about it too hard. like it wasnt terrible and i dont like 1-to-1 recreations so i enjoy that theh changed things but, no spoilers, they made leon so much of a wreck that he had to get saved by claire most the time which is bad optically bc the trope of brown man is incompetent and must be saved by girlboss white woman is annoying as hell
(spoilers i cant cut on mobile lol)
but getting into spoilers, they totally removed ada? entirely? except a mid credits scene? and they basically switched wesker and adas roles so he was the one who was trying to steal a sample for some money that she hired him for ?? also bad optics. this man is a eugenicist (not in the movie... now hes a sadboy)
claires new characterization would be cool if it didnt result in no ada and incompetent leon. it was just really different. william almost tested on claire but she ran away so she got obsessed w umbrella & became a conspiracy theorist and met with ben italianlastname, which means ada also wasnt there lol. claire was also friends with lisa trevor which was... cool
sherry was nothing. william (birkin) was apparently like a dad to chris so when he transforms (which he does) he ends up chasing chris ans not wanting to spread the virus with sherry. also annette wasnt a scientist this time around she was just Scared Mom
jill was pretty cool but they made her so down bad for wesker that it was sickening... dont do that. she didnt really have much else besides down bad but i think it was epic how they made her real good at shooting. like sharpshooter type shit. also she looked cool as hell. i wish they couldve got like a blasian woman to play her since they keep whitewashing jill in canon though but now they just have her as entirely not asian lol ):
chris was fine honestly. he was some guy. hes always some guy. he wasn't bad he was very good. i liked him.
like i said they made leon pretty incompetent which sucked ass but i love avan as him. he was a healthy mix of og2 and re2make where hes definitely still like... a young rookie who has no clue how to handle fucking ZOMBIES but hes also a little more headstrong and also he was late because he was drunk off his ass. as always leon was funny because he always is but he was clearly comic relief
the connection of the re1 and 2 groups wasnt bad either, it was cool how they had them meet. it wasn't weird or bad but it didn't last very long

watched WTRC and have some bits to say (I may type up my notes from watching it and post it here at some point)... I was right the decision for RE1 and RE2 smashed together is a peeve; Tom Hopper as Wesker is the weakest casting (Wesker in the Alice films was great casting cos the face is one of those you just want to hit with a boulder Tom however does not); Hannah John-Kamen as Jill is amazing and I would give a lot to see her delived the line "if you want stars I'll give you stars"; Avan was amazing as Leon; what the heck did they do to Annette? and Lisa Trevor my god she was one of my favourite things about this film like seriously I feel so bad for Lisa in the games as much as she scares me I do feel so bad for her and what was with the cow at the end of RC?
