The Mechanical Age (Scrapped)

Final resting place for an unidentified four cylinder car engine. I came across this scene at an urban recycling yard in Chinatown, Bangkok. It seemed symbolic. (March 2023.)

Do you like engines? To some people this question may sound like asking if they have a particular fondness for flushing toilets or leaf blowers. But to those who are mechanically inclined - assuming such an inclination exists - there is fascination in all things that move with the help of pistons, rods, shafts, valves, pumps, not to mention a nice set of gears.

I offer as an example a five cylinder radial aero engine in motion. The elegance of its reciprocating operating principle can be observed in animated form here.

If that looks like clever engineering, now imagine the mechanical ballet of a radial engine with fourteen or even twenty-eight cylinders at full speed, the frenzy of all those pistons going to and fro, the valves opening and closing in perfect and necessary harmony. Yes? No? Such engines became the heavy lifters for large American planes and bombers towards the end of WW II.  Although they were soon replaced by turboprops and jet engines, their engineering complexity, antiquated as it may seem today, was amazing.

At a more mundane level, but still clever, were the postwar flat 'boxer' engines of the Volkswagen Beetle and of the Citroën 2CV, both air cooled. The radical, pared down simplicity of the 2CV made it one of the most brilliant car designs ever, engine included. Their noise defined an era of rising mobility in Europe. There was something reassuring about it.

Horizontally opposed piston engines are rare now, except in some motorcycles or as light aircraft engines, the kind you find in a Cessna. Only two car brands still make them, Porsche (where it is a very distant relative of the original Volkswagen engine) and, oddly, Subaru in Japan.

Soon all piston engines will be gone, at least in new cars. It may not have been headline news, but Audi recently announced it would stop selling cars with internal combustion engines by 2026. Other car makers have similar timetables for phasing out thermal engines.

More than 150 years of fine engineering are coming to an end, or more than three centuries of ingenuity if you include the granddaddy of the industrial revolution, the steam engine, which is a thermal device but lacks internal combustion. Arrivederci Ferrari, goodbye Harley-Davidson. Ferrari’s first electric car is due in late 2025.

To think of it differently, the piston engine had been a total anachronism for so long it seemed unimaginable to do away with it. It was the beating heart of the industrial age. Its demise is an revolution in itself.

We cannot disinvent the wheel or the escalator, and I hope the Eiffel tower will remain standing, but technology has shifted to ever less tangible, non-mechanical realities, to circuitry, to gene technology and to everything digital.

One could of course argue that industrialization, and the machinery that enabled progress, got us where we are today: the Anthropocene and the onset of a man-made climate disaster. But you can also simply blame capitalism doped by overpopulation, or human greed and cleverness.

While thermal engines are doomed (inasmuch as they directly emit greenhouse gases), it is going to take a long time for them to vanish completely. Cars and trucks can easily be electrified, but billions of internal combustion engines are used in applications that run from model aircraft to power generators, fishing boats, pumps, cement mixers or container ships. Many of them are dirty old diesels that, in the everyday real world, are as close to indispensable as you can get. And hard to replace with lithium batteries.

Parnall Elf II 'G-AAIN' by Alan Wilson Via Flickr: c/n 2. Built 1932. Owned and operated by the Shuttleworth Collection and seen displaying at the collections ‘Drive-in Airshow’, the worlds first drive-in airshow and the first UK Airshow in 2020. Old Warden, Bedfordshire, UK. 18th July 2020. The following info is from the Shuttleworth Collection Website:- “The Parnall Elf was designed by Harold Bolas and built by George Parnall & Co in their factory at Yate near Bristol in 1929. The first example was exhibited alongside a number of new aircraft at the Seventh International Aero Exhibition at Olympia in London in 1929, where it was intended to compete with the de Havilland Moth which was of similar design and performance. Like the Moth it was a two seat light biplane aimed at the civil market as a potential replacement for many of the ageing, ex-service aircraft which, by this time, had become costly to run and maintain. The Elf was of conventional construction with a wooden airframe and a combination of plywood and fabric covering. The emphasis was on sturdiness and ease of maintenance and operation and the wings could be folded for storage. The interplane struts were arranged in the form of warren girders thus avoiding the need for extensive wire bracing. The prototype, later registered G-AAFH, was powered by a 105 hp Cirrus Hermes I four cylinder in line engine. Parnall built two more Elfs, registered G-AAIN and G-AAIO, both fitted with the uprated 120 hp Hermes. Unfortunately the prototype received a less than glowing report when tested at Martlesham Heath and later it and IO were destroyed in flying accidents in 1934. Further interest in the Elf failed to materialise. More early experimental railcars: The Dringos propeller-locomotive

Built two years after the aerowagon in Berlin, Germany by the local engineer Otto Steinitz, the Dringos-Wagen (Dringos-Car) is another example of an early experimental railway car using propeller engines from aircraft as method of propulsion. It followed previous testing of an engine mount designed by Carl Geissen on existing railway cars on a special track of the German Aviation Research Institute (Deutsche Versuchsanstalt für Luftfahrt), which were recorded as having reached speeds of up to 140 km/h (97 mph).

The Dringos-Car was based on a freight wagon and had two propellers, one on each end, with the cabin between the two. The engine, licensed from the Luftfahrt Company in Grunewald (a suburb of Berlin) had six cylinders and 160 horsepower, and according to a contemporary German general interest magazine the vehicle was in theory capable of speeds of up to 130 km/h, but a problem will likely have been the entirely free-standing engines that will have generated a lot of noise. A failed patent application in the UK from 1920 claimed that the installation of the engine as well as a later removal was simple and that it could be done on any wagon.

On its first trip on 11 May 1919 it carried 40 government railway officials, members of parliament, and crew members from Grunewald to the town of Beelitz, 40 km (25 miles) away. Unlike the previous test cars it proved to be much slower in practice, both in acceleration and top speed. It did not manage more than 60 km/h or 37 mph due to safety concerns regarding build quality and the brakes, and so there was no further interest in it.

This was compounded by Germany being forced to destroy its existing military aircraft and their parts that were enforced after WW 1, and so there were a lack of aircraft engines that could have been repurposed. However, Carl Geissen continued to work on railway cars with propellers in the early 1920s, and other engineers in later years also built several prototypes of propeller-locomotives. Steinitz fled Germany in 1939 and settled down in New York, where he died in 1964.
