actually thinking about how dan heng might feel about blade in a romantic/ship scenario is super interesting to explore. like. i usually like ship content of them that's very Divorce or Hatred or Fighting or whatever along those lines. but. just imo thinking abt a more actual romantic renheng. the road to becoming lovers (again) theoretically would really filled with angst and very slow-burn. following the line of thought that dan heng wants to make up for the sins of dan feng and fix whatever things he can, this would encompass learning more about blade's whole Deal and maybe even gaining a sense of sympathy for him. maybe wanting to find a way to restore him from the mara or to finally set him free and fulfill his wish of death. dan heng offered that kindness to bailu, so in this scenario i'm thinking, despite the conflict blade and dan heng have, once dan heng reaches out to blade and explains his side/stops running... he'd also want to help blade to make up for the past and put both of them at ease. imagining blade slowly realizing he wants to live, being shown kindness from imbibitor lunae once again. being vaguely reminded of those times he loved dan feng as yingxing. but dan heng is a different person in his own life, choices, and lived experiences. the mercy dan heng resolves to embody, is a contrast to the destruction dan feng caused at the end of his reign. contrasting the selfishness dan feng felt for yingxing that led to that destruction. imagining blade being confused why dan heng would help him. but then, falling in love with his mercy. the kindness, the humanity extended to one broken by the past and haunted by a curse. blade opening up about his feelings to dan heng and confiding in him about the mire of emotions and thoughts swirling for hundreds of years within him -- dan heng, through his kindness and desire to amend and help, being the only person blade could ever voice those true thoughts to. dan heng shows love and care in a different way from dan feng. and him showing that to blade in an effort to help him mend the brokenness of the past -- they can have a connection of a new making; founded on new feelings and new identity.

i happened upon dan heng's note in his room regarding the xianzhou luofu... particularly the line about how the luofu guards the secrets of immortality extremely strictly against short-lived species, and then thinking about dan feng and his love for a man of a short-lived species. he loved yingxing so much. ough. my heart. dan heng warns against it bc of that past... dan feng went for it wholeheartedly because he couldn't handle grief and loss. god. dan feng was so full of love, that it was his downfall -- of himself and everyone around him. sobbing.

i think it's absolutely worth mentioning the impact genshin and now HSR have on transmascs if i'm being honest. i've never seen media influence transmascs on this large of a scale before, on top of characters being so widely HC'ed as transmasc on this scale. tbh like the games or hate them, i think that's really notable that these popular games with GNC men designs resonate with so many of us, and even have probably brought a good amount of us to gender realization. especially because other popular media don't portray men like genshin and HSR do

dan heng from the angle of dissociative amnesia and trauma

a Lot of my different life experiences lend themselves to understanding and relating to dan heng a good amount from different angles. so one thing that kind of bothers me or even intrigues me is how much different people interpret him in relation to dan feng, and his past/connection to the vidyadhara & xianzhou at all.

like. i just saw a post just now that was intriguing and i kinda understood what they were getting at, but the wording felt a bit off to me. yes, the sins and memories of dan feng are his to bear. but he isn't dan feng. he's a different person, although within the same reincarnation lineage as dan feng. on a technicality; physical level... yes, they're the "same person." but emotionally, psychologically, and in terms of memories -- the things that make one a person shaped by experiences -- he's not the same person. take someone (like a system) who experiences dissociative amnesia and trauma, and forms a new identity afterwards. while their new life and identity is different from their past, echoes from the past -- the way their past played out -- has an undeniable influence on their current identity. i don't remember my entire past, but the pain i experienced shaped me into who i am today. this is a similar case with dan heng in relation to dan feng. like with all trauma and healing, coming to terms with your past is how you can move on. so with the post in question -- they did say dan heng has to reconcile with his past as dan feng and pay for his sins, which yes i agree with. but, he's not the same as dan feng. to say so is to be disrespectful and dismissive of the new life and identity one takes on. if you came up to me and talked about my deadname or my past that i don't remember at all it'd be very awkward and weird, lol. but, to come to terms with your trauma is key to understanding yourself and who you are, and thus you can take that new identity and go forwards with it in full understanding and peace, shaping a new future and life for yourself. dan heng is dan heng.

baiheng and dan feng rambles

ik a lot of the evidence points to the main dynamics being xingyue + liubai, but irregardless of if the "beloved" was yingxing or baiheng (it's probably yingxing honestly). i think fengbai would be an interesting dynamic to explore especially with the context of dan heng + bailu in the future. the fact baiheng was a nameless and saw countless sights; had freedom in the skies as a pilot. while dan feng was confined to the luofu and his duties, but wanted to break free. beyond that, we're not entirely sure what kind of person baiheng was in relation to dan feng and the rest of the quintet -- she's still a bit of an enigma, but we can probably extrapolate based on bailu and what dan heng thinks of her.

baiheng probably had an outgoing and headstrong personality to match with her theming of being a nameless; a traveler -- traits that dan heng believes will serve bailu well in holding her own as the high elder. there's a lot to be said about how expectations and duty shape the person you're supposed to be -- for both dan feng and bailu as the high elders, as opposed to freedom and travel through baiheng and dan heng. (worth noting the "heng" in their names isn't the same character, btw. they do have the same tone, though -- rising tone.) the freedom that baiheng has is probably something dan feng envies -- the restriction that bailu has is something dan heng wishes to alleviate for her.

dan feng definitely must've felt a lot in regards to baiheng -- and the whole high cloud quintet in general -- to have revived her as bailu. jing yuan talks of how dan feng was never known as a person with feelings, but only a legendary or infamous figure. whatever feelings dan feng felt for baiheng and yingxing were just... so much, that he couldn't bear losing them. the high cloud quintet probably was the only group who saw dan feng as a person, and not just the high elder.

(sidenote: also baiheng used a bow/arrow, march does too, they were both nameless? danmarch precursor anyone (JOKE)

the emotional conditions dan feng suffered as a high elder in contrast to desiring freedom evidently took a drastic toll on him. it makes me wonder if no one treated him with kindness and humanity as a child. this is an opposition to bailu, in which jing yuan and dan heng both wish her well and try to make an effort to connect with her. there's only a few times dan heng speaks in higher emotions, like in the animated short declaring his right to his future, or in his companion quest expressing hope and surprise that bailu truly has the power of the high elder to seal the abundance power. and dan heng even starts learning medicine from bailu!! and he wants to learn how to heal -- despite not knowing any cloudhymns that can heal. the two playable foxians we have follow the path of harmony, so it's possible baiheng also had a similar power -- another opposition to dan feng/heng's power of destruction. bailu is someone dan heng is really passionate about caring for and ensuring she lives a happy life. he grew up in the shackling prison, enduring the weight of sins of the previous high elder -- he wouldn't dare wish that suffering onto bailu, his successor.

in the aftermath of tragedy, it's really nice that bailu has dan heng and jing yuan to look after her. the themes of humanity and connection therein are important between those three... aough
