The Cosmic Horror of Junji Ito’s Remina
[The following essay contains MAJOR SPOILERS; YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!]
The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far.
Tumblr media
Although the various “eldritch abominations” conjured by H.P. Lovecraft—Cthulhu, Dagon, Yog-Sototh—are undeniably iconic, they are rarely the source of terror in the author’s best work. In many cases, they are but catalysts; occasionally, they are merely symptoms. The real root of the existential dread that they inspire is Knowledge—specifically the knowledge of one’s own insignificance. In the unexplored shadows of our universe, Lovecraft speculates—perhaps in the infinite void of outer space, or much closer to home, somewhere beneath the unfathomable depths of the ocean—lurk incomprehensibly powerful beings that are to mankind as we are to insects. They needn’t even be hostile, necessarily—just utterly indifferent. After all, how often have you crushed a colony of ants underfoot without noticing?
How would you cope with the realization that you might be the ant beneath something else’s boot?
With Remina (alternatively titled Hellstar Remina by some translators), Junji Ito snatches the mantle of “Master of Cosmic Horror” from Lovecraft—and what a worthy successor he is! The plot revolves around the eponymous celestial body, which emerges from a wormhole roughly sixteen lightyears away from the Milky Way galaxy. The scientific community’s fascination with the extra-dimensional object’s defiance of every known law of astrophysics, however, quickly turns to blind panic when it abruptly alters its erratic orbit, speeding directly towards our solar system—reducing every planet in its path to rubble. As mass hysteria erupts across the Earth, a bloodthirsty cult arises, convincing the frenzied mob that they must appease the “Demon Star” by sacrificing the innocent young girl for whom it was named.
Tumblr media
While Ito paints the page with his trademark nightmarish imagery—from Remina’s gargantuan glaring eye to the prehensile, tongue-like tendril with which it slurps up the moon—it is the story’s oppressive atmosphere and pessimistic themes that truly resonate, lingering in the reader’s memory long after the final chapter. Faced with imminent destruction and confronted with the inherent meaninglessness of existence itself, society collapses almost instantaneously, rational minds are irreparably shattered, and humanity accelerates its demise by immediately resorting to senseless violence.
Such is the terrible burden of Knowledge, as Lovecraft described in The Call of Cthulhu:
The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the deadly light into the peace and safety of a new dark age.
It isn’t the monster that drives people insane, but rather the haunting awareness of just how little they actually figure into the greater calculus of the cosmos.

[Closed] Illgal Alien [Thomas]

"Oh this is unfortunate." The Brit whispered.
He stood up from the table he had been studying at and gathered the books in a big pile to bring them back to their spot. The historic library echoes his footsteps back at him.
His Father had reached across the barrier to whisper in his ear about the several tomes of dark magic in this library and the cult aiming to gain them. He knew Yog-Sototh cared not if he used that info to aid them or to hinder them. But he knew what The Doctor would tell him to do.
He walked as calmly as he could, even though he was begging, silently, for more knowledge, which books, where to find them.
His begging was heard, but the knowledge was overwhelming and he went to his knees, books flying this way and that. He gasped and the words sprouted from his mouth, loudly and hurriedly. People in the library were looking at him as though he was having a seizure.
But he was scrabbling for a paper to write down what he had shouted, before he forgot it again.

Continuing off of my (Warrior) cat designs for the Mechanisms crew, I’ll be going through the characters of the “main” albums (OUATIS, HNOC, and TBI) and some others. This set is for The Bifrost Incident! In order of left to right for each row, these designs are for: Lyfrassir Edda, Odin, Thor, Loki, and Sigyn.
See the read more for reasonings on markings, colors, scars, and other details.
(Also posted on DeviantART)
All of the drawings started with the same base, then edited for fur lengths and expressions.
Lyfrassir Edda: I really like how this design turned out! Lyfrassir’s markings are meant to be those of a classic tabby (which would be more evident in their fullbody design), the twisting patterns reflective of the Bifrost/Yog-Sototh’s madness. Similarly, their eyes are meant to have sectorial heterochromia - I wanted to include as many colors as possible there. I’ve not yet decided whether or not Lyfrassir survives in this AU (nor what, exactly, happens in place of an eldritch fear god), but if they do, their left eye is blinded due to... possibly an explosion (an electrical line’s transformer, perhaps)?* Their color palette is pale to make their eyes and any surrounding colors pop - plus, I associate them heavily with silver-range colors, so these felt right.
Odin: To represent her eye patch, this design has Odin’s right eye being blinded by a bird - possibly a hawk (as, if I recall correctly, I think that’s what happened in mythology (amongst other circumstances)?). I’m still a bit uncertain on what her full-body markings will look like (perhaps reflective of a train’s tracks?), but they’ll probably look sort of like a mackerel tabby. Yellow-gold just felt right for Odin’s color palette.
Thor: I don’t have a lot to say about Thor’s design - it fits well enough, but I’m not too attached to it. His fullbody design will probably look somthing like Nastya or TS’s. Orange-ish seemed like the right sort of colors for Thor.
Loki: Not a lot to say here, either - due to Marvel’s influence, in my mind Loki (all versions) is permanently associated with green, so that’s the colors she got. Her stripes (pattern not yet decided) are especially heavy, meant to add to her look of exhaustion and dishevelment.
Sigyn: I really like how Sigyn’s design came out! Her markings were a struggle to figure out, but once I got them down, they ended up looking pretty nice. The colors were also difficult to decide on, as well, but had the same result.

"...a literate, people-oriented horror/romance."--Amazon review.
In his blue-footed sleepers, he looked small and vulnerable but didn’t appear afraid though he was in near-darkness. He was looking up. Above him the air glittered and swirled. Obscured in a fog-like haze, vague shapes floated around him. Holding up chubby arms, he watched the whirling forms, voice rising and falling in words abruptly audible and very clear...
“Ey-hr Yog-Sototh, nurl lwa...ect otwa...”

Yog-sototh live reaction to Loki and Sigyn's reunion.
Tumblr media
yeah i'll draw that
[ID: a very messy sketch of Loki and Sigyn from the bifrost incident kissing as Loki is hooked up to the train. In the top corner there is a 'Live Yog-Sototh reaction' box, showing a disintegrating Odin/Yog-sototh, looking bored. Lyrics from 'End of the Line' surround the kissing pair and read: When Loki's heartsblood is gone, the train will arrive, but until then, they are together. Through the pain, Loki kisses Sigyn. Goodbye my love, yet shed no tears.
The lives we've shared have brought us here. I will stay by your side. I’ll hold on through. This time, this time. /End ID]

[ID: A depiction of ragnarok II in crochet with embroidered details. There is a cut-through grey train car with green carpet on a many-coloured background with three main scenes. To the left Frey, a man with a dark blue shirt and brown hair, is lifted by rainbow tendrils coming through the window behind. His skin is falling off, revealing parts of his skeleton. In the middle, a white silouette of a person, Odr, is reaching for Freya, whose head is stuck to the wall with golden stitches. She has long golden hair and cries red tears. To the right Tyr, who wears an orange shirt, is being eaten by a wolf-like figure, Garm. Garm bites Tyr's neck and Tyr rips out Garm's heart. Through all three windows there are spiral rainbow tendrils and the middle one has a white star that the tendrils come from. There is a row of golden norse runes at the top of the wall]
*Ragnarok II starts to play*
This is my contribution to @mechtober-the-unofficial day 29: Y'AI 'NG'NGAH YOG-SOTOTH etc. Fun fact, the runes are the yog-sototh chant.
Here are some closeups:

hey i've always wondered what's up with that one fate character who's like a little girl with a keyhole on her forehead. is she important, or is it the remilia/flandre scarlet effect where they look cool and so people draw a ton of art of her? also, what's with the keyhole?
That's Abigail Williams, the girl that started the Salem Witch Trials. She's both the main protagonist and final boss of FGO's Salem chapter.
The keyhole in her head is a hint to the being influencing her, Yog-Sototh of the Lovecraft mythos. She channels his power through her. If she was not defeated, Yog-Sototh would have used her body as a gate to fully manifest in the real world.
As Yog-Sototh is something of a neutral god that isn't explicitly evil, the events of the Salem chapter were put in motion by his cult instead.

you know in expert testimony when ivy finds out that the train's arrived and goes something like
"ah. well then, we should be going."
I'm obsessed with the implication that the mechs just decided to chill in prison for 60 years even though they knew fucking yog-sototh express was on its way. like. they could've just dipped at any point but these dramatic bitches just had to wait for somebody to come ask about the train so they could lord it over them.

I really love how Salem works well as just a love letter to Lovecraft’s mythos but also works as almost an inside joke to the players, as well as a commentary on sin and an idea of a play.
The atmosphere, from the get-go, is dreary and oppressive - just like in Lovecraft’s own stories, Salem is filled with discomfort, cruel people, and ominous people. While this isn’t necessarily a sign of the presence of Lovecraftian beings being present, it still serves as a Lovecraftian location. But it gets more Lovecraft-referencing in the names. If you’re familiar with Lovecraft’s mythos, the names of Lavinia Whateley and Randolph Carter are probably familiar - they’re characters from The Dunwich Horror and several short stories (Most notably The Silver Key and Through the Gates of the Silver Key) respectively.
Both characters, in turn, have a connection to Yog-Sototh - an older Lavinia has children with Yog, and Carter meets Yog-Sototh in “Through the Gates of the Silver Key”. Carter is also associated with the Silver Key itself - an ancient artifact that unlocks time and space and is in his possession. From the get-go, it should be obvious that Yog-Sototh, the All-in-One and the One-in-All, is going to be present - because why else would the only Lovecraftian names used come from stories with Yog-Sototh?
All of the aforementioned plays into Raum’s plan, and Abby’s role - she is, due to her nature of being consciously unaware of her deeds in life, but subconsciously aware and desiring to be punished for her sins, a perfect vessel for Raum to enact his play.
The story in general has a lot of focus placed on plays - which is very fitting. At it’s core, plays are representations of stories - like any other literary medium, they can be analyzed and interpreted. They have themes, and characters that work around those themes. They say things about the human condition, and reflect their authors’ ideals and views - even comedies hold a great deal of wisdom and understanding of social norms and ideals.
In that way, Salem is in some ways a story about plays - we not only put on plays (both thematically relevant ones, like that of Solomon and Queen of Sheba and even plays that are more literal in their role in the story (a middle finger to Hopkins) and their messaging (like the “we shouldn’t burn witches” conclusion of the Jeanne sisters play.))
And in turn, Salem itself is a play, written by Raum. Raum creates a cast of characters (the Puritans) that desire punishment in the same way as Abby, and invites guests to play certain parts. The guests are all Raum’s attempts to bring Abby to further despair - from giving her a friend that she will lose in Lavinia, to Guda to serve as Abby’s hope (so that when Guda died, to maximize Lavinia’s despair.)
Robin Hood - a “one of many actors” who isn’t the real Robin Hood but was cast as him - is the first person able to recognize and understand this, because he himself is an actor brought in to play a role - both in Salem and in general as a heroic spirit. In general, the 8 outsiders are all brought in because of their unconscious desire for punishment and their own guilt. They might not be consciously aware of their own feelings of guilt, like Hopkin’s desire for punishment for his injustices, or they might be explicitely aware of their guilt, like Lavinia feeling guilty for being unable to serve her family as a medium to Yog-Sototh, or Guda feeling guilt for abandoning people to die in the singularities.
This leads all the outsiders to want to confront their own guilt - and in turn, Abby and Raum would be able to offer salvation. However, as said before, the part of Abby that desires salvation and can accept it is the part that has done awful things, and desires to be punished for her sins - this is specifically important because in Raum’s play, his end goal is to have Abby awaken to her subconsious desire to be punished for her sins, and generalize that to the entire world. Because the Abby in Salem never did anything wrong, she would face both her greatest desire, and a great injustice - which in turn, by Raum’s plan, would push Abby to an existance where she can’t forgive herself, or forgive humanity, and see self-flagellation as the only existence possible.
His goal is to create a sort of “Christian Hell” for all humanity, where those that hold guilt are eternally punished and can therefore find redemption.
Sanson is a small microcosm of this ideal - due to his sin of acting as an executioner during the French revolution, he desires a punishment (being executed) as a way of absolution.
