"hey, i'm heeseung," ordering his packages to your door so he can start a little something, to know your name, to know what your voice sounds like. to let you know you he is open to talk to you given any chance.

always trying to find opportunities to bump into you, looking through the peephole whenever he's home to see if you'd head out, ready with either 'taking out the trash' or 'going out for groceries' he's so desperate to get close to you, always offering to help you out with anything and everything. sometimes calling you over to listen to a new draft or to have a taste of the new recipe he tried. it shows on his face, just how he feels. and he doesn't mind it, he wants you to know; it's not a secret he tries to hide.

"it's easy, i can teach you," offering to teach you how to play the guitar when you awe over his skills. the thought of having his hands over yours, guiding them to hit the strings right, his face right next to yours, cheeks touching; it was a step closer.

slow and steady was his plan.

but once he knew of how you'd been here only for a one year work program, he realizes there isn't enough time to take it slow. and from then on he's actively pursuing you. asking you out on dates, even though he doesn't specifically tell you it's a date, the things he takes you out for are obvious enough. expensive restaurants and famous bakeries, pretty parks and romantic plays, boating picnics and city tours to show you all the places he'd bring you to every weekend.

waiting right outside the building with breakfast, in the morning when you leave for work to walk with you and drop you off. sometimes he'd wait outside your door but after you told him he doesn't need to do so much for you, he stubbornly opted to wait downstairs, telling you he's heading to work too. his studio on the other side and his 'work' starting whenever he wants it to.

sometimes he would ask you to come over for help because he can't write anything and having you close gives him inspiration. sitting with you out in the balcony, coffee mugs in hand while he makes you laugh, your pretty little smile flooding his mind with hearts and fuzzy feelings.

sending flowers to your workplace at lunch along with little desserts and sweet little notes telling you he'll keep trying until the end.

slowly as you accept him and his love, he'd invite you to his shows, giving you vip passes for backstage so you can be with before and after he's on stage. dedicating songs to a special someone and talking about everything he loves about you, he's smitten; wondering what he'd do when the year is over.

Asking here because you are a relatively established author within this community, and I'm curious what you + others think but don't want to spam multiple authors' inboxes with this question. Additionally, this isn't bait, just a genuine question I've been ruminating over for some time now. As an author, do you feel female/non-binary ROs get less positive attention than male ROs? Do you feel they're more likely to be ignored outright by readers or even receive more vitriolic hate? To be clear, this includes gender-selectable ROs, where their female/non-binary versions get ignored/more hate than their male versions. I put female ROs/non-binary ROs in the same category here even though they're different genders because I'm mostly curious as to whether or not you think there's positive male bias in the readership of the IF community. I ask because, as a long-term reader and community member, I've noticed consistently that male ROs are favored by fellow readers. Overall, male ROs get more asks, more positive asks, and thus more attention from authors. I've seen a repeating pattern where readers will default to using the author's set male pronouns for a gender selectable RO when sending in an ask, even if the ask isn't related to the male version of that RO.

On the flip side, it seems like female characters are way more likely to be ignored (asks are simply not sent in about them) or downright hated. I've seen truly vitriolic hate sent in about female ROs to IF authors like I've never seen for male ROs, or at least on the same scale. That's not even *touching* the absolute disrespect and transphobia I've seen towards non-binary characters before, such as Clementine from The Northern Passage (I mention that character as a specific example here- but I don't want to bring this discussion to that author's doorstep because I've noted a particularly high number of bad-faith individuals tend to harass them). This pattern exists for fanart, too- especially for gender selectable ROs, the male version seems to exist as a "default" for many fan artists.

I bring this lengthy ask to you, instead of making my own post, because I was curious to get an author's perspective on this. As a reader it's a repeated pattern I've noticed time and time again, especially the bigger IFs get, but I was wondering if a 'behind the scenes' perspective might have anything else to add.

Feel free to ignore this if you'd like! Overall I am just curious as to whether or not other people see this pattern.

No, I think you're absolutely correct in this. I definitely think that there is something of a bias within the IF community that leans towards Male / Masc Presenting ROs. But this of course is speaking purely from my own perspective of working on my own IFs and playing a handful of others.

Speaking from Larkin's perspective--it's no secret that my male characters get a lot more attention from readers than any of my female or nb characters. But, the thing here is, I think, even in traditional media, (movies, books, video-games) that's also something of a trend, so while it's disheartening and disappointing, it's unfortunately, not surprising.

I do certainly agree that there is a lot of issues within the IF community concerning how characters with marginalized identies are treated. (whether that be through misgendering in conversation, white-washing or the plethora of downright vitriol and hatred spewed at characters and authors alike.) These are all issues that I've taken notice of just as someone who's experience within this community has been relatively tame compared to some of my fellow authors.

But as someone who's both white and cis gendered I don't really think that it's appropriate for me to wax-poetic about the issues faced in the community by people who identify otherwise, especially when we're a community filled with plenty of talented and diverse creators who can all speak on this better than I can.

What I can speak on however is my experience as a queer female author, writing queer female characters. When I started writing my games I wrote them primarily from a perspective of wanting to write a game that A) I'd want to play and B) one that had things that I saw were lacking in other games. Whether that be through mechanics, relationship dynamics and characters.

While it isn't explicitly clear just yet because of the point in development I'm at, I write my female love interests from a more saphhic perspective with female and non-binary identifying main characters in mind. It's something that I've slowly come to realize throughout the process of working on my project, as I've come to terms with my own identity. Rose, Celina, NB! Ace, and F! Hollis (and a few other characters that have yet to be introduced properly but identify with the labels of female or non-binary) are all characters that I hold near and dear to my heart, and have all helped me realize things about myself as I'm writing. So while I love all of my characters equally, it is, like I mentioned, a little sad to see the male characters favored--but not something that I wasn't expecting going into writing my game.

but you have to do this. you have to keep ronan safe, and unfortunately that includes breaking his heart. yours is just one of the casualties in the process too.

“i know i haven't been the perfect partner for you, but please give me a chance again. what did i do wrong?” he pleads, doe eyes on the verge of tears.

‘nothing,’ you want to tell him. ‘you did nothing wrong, my love.’

but you can't tell him that, can't tell him that you're only doing this for his own good. you shake your head silently for the last time and ronan's desperate hands try to hold you close, just a sense of security to know that you aren't leaving. that maybe this is all just a bad dream.

but you've already left the car, and ronan is left staring at the place where you once sat and broke it off with him. the red lights and stop signs do a show of mocking him. he can't even close his eyes without seeing your somber face as you tell him that you've fell out of love.

his friends always told him that you weren't right for him, too secretive and moody. but none of them knew you like ronan did. they wouldn't have understood.

how is he supposed to move on from this now? you said ‘forever’, but it all seems like empty promises now that he drives alone through the streets where you used to walk together. where you laughed at each other's jokes and first held hands.

“i guess you didn't mean what you wrote in those poems about me,” he smiles bitterly.

when they saw you sitting alone, they'd psyched themself up and nonchalantly try to greet you. maybe even try to sit next to you. but they had to stop when a person came into the diner and greeted you with an enthusiasm of an old friend. their pointy ears aren't hard to miss for {$I_name}'s eyes, probably an elf.

okay great, so you were just here to meet with one of your supernatural friends. big deal! they roll their eyes to themself, and yet can't seem to squash down the insecure whispers in the back of their head as they stare at you two.

the person with you laughs especially hard when you tell them a corny joke and {$I_name) almost crushes the glass of dr. pepper in their hand. you weren't that funny.

then it happens. the person leans in towards you, as if to steal a kiss. a kiss that {$I_name} had frustratingly dreamt of stealing for themself. this time they do crush the can of soda in their hands and everyone in the restaurant turns to look at them.

but {$I_name} could care less about all of them. they're only looking at you, as your eyes widen in surprise and quickly the expression turns into guilt. glancing between them and the elf you were talking to, you stand up to move towards them.

{$I_name} decides they've had enough of the shit show they had just witnessed. it was their fault for being too nosy anyway. and why does it hurt so much? you weren't theirs to begin with. you could kiss anyone you'd like. be with anyone you wish.

they ignore the way their heart clenches painfully at the thought of you and someone else together.

“you didn't even cheat in any way, vampyr. but oh, why do i feel like you betrayed me.” they clutch their heart, laughing mournfully at their own pathetic self.

“god i wish i would've thought this through, before i fell in love with you.”

3. What's their favourite season and why?

Theo/Thea - Autumn. They don't really like when it's too hot or to cold outside and a breezy autumn day is perfect for them. Also, they were born in october, so they feel close to this season.

Selim/Aylin - Winter. They have good tolerance to low temperatures, but they can't stand the heat. Also, they love snow, it makes everything seem so peaceful.

Ilzrus - Summer. They love sunny days, clear skies and the way everything is alive during this time of year.

12. If they were an animal, what kind of animal would they be?

This one can be a little spoilery so I will just list the animals, without explaining:)

Theo/Thea - Spider.

Theo/Thea - They've got dexterous hands, in part because of the fact that they have many younger siblings and they have been taking care of them for many years. From braiding hair to sewing buttons, they can handle it all.

Selim/Aylin - They're good with numbers, even if they are not formally trained (yet, who knows).

Ilzrus - They're really good at mimicking voices (accents, inflection the whole thing)

2. What's one thing that can make their day instantly better?
