Rijeka & Rovinj
At some point, European adventures start to blend together as if slipping through the space/ time like an overrated Kunrick movie. Where did I wake up? A trendy hotel room. Where am I going? Some place with tiny roads, tinier cars and probably a cathedral to St. Someone-or-another. What are we doing today? Looking at some old stuff, likely Roman, maybe gothic, and probably going to start drinking too early while eating fabulous food. We’ve officially reached that point of the trip. What is the only thing that keeps you grounded in the moment? The food and views, because the wine sure-as-shit doesn’t help.
I will say that besides Amsterdam, Revinj was the first time that I felt like I was living the local culture. In Split and Zadar, I felt like the area was very much catered to tourists, but I think because we are in “shoulder/end” of season, we really got to experience more of a local vibe and it felt good. Better than good, it felt really great. In fact, it reminded me why I love to travel so much. Ultimately, I regretted not spending 3 nights in Rovinj. But I’ve gotten ahead of myself, as we had a bit of an eventful trip there.
We left Zadar for our 4 hour journey to Rovinj. Our plan was to stop around 3 of 4 hours in Rijeka to climb a massive amount of stairs through 3 monasteries to end up at the 4th church next to a “castle.” The plan (as I planned out via Google maps several months back) was to park in a parking lot that was at the bottom of the “stairs” and work our way up. Turns out, Rijeka is loaded with those aforementioned tiny streets and cars with a massive lack of parking and some of the most nerve-racking intertwined streets we’ve ever traversed. We followed the Google Maps directions to the parking lot, missed our turn at least two times, tried to turn into another lot that was complete anarchy and worked off a combination of rules from musical chairs and Mad Max Fury Road, then realized we did not have what it takes to be a driver in Rijeka. At this point we have two options, continue to fight through the insane traffic and hope to bully someone into letting us have their spot OR we can just drive to the top and maybe work our way down.
In an effort to keep my husband from spraying his teeth chrome a la Mad Max style, I chose for us to drive to the top of the mountain. We worked our way up, missed at least one turn that caused us to go a few miles out of the way and parked, maybe in a public parking spot. From there, we walked towards the castle (basically a tower fortification), to decide where we should eat. It was a little after 1pm at this point, one of us had eaten breakfast, and the other hadn’t eaten anything. We saw a few places and I asked Jimmy where to eat, he picked one, we walked in to find that they were only serving coffee and wine… not helpful at this point. So we continued to walk where we found a restaurant that appeared to be in an old soviet administration building with an absolutely stunning terrace called Trsatica.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In all honesty, I thought it was going to be mediocre at best. Any place that has a stunning view doesn’t have to try very hard to stay in business. In my opinion, they really just have to put out edible food and they will survive. We were immediately met by a waiter who told us to sit wherever we wanted. We opted for a table that was partially shaded at the edge of the terrace. This view cannot be overstated and the pictures never stood a chance of doing it justice. He offered to give us a few minutes to view the menu, but after the ride we had (we probably spent a little over an hour battling traffic in the search for a parking spot that was never to be found), I felt like we needed glasses of wine to start! He quickly came back with a house Merlot and was ready to take our order. Because we are in the Istria region we both decided on truffle dishes, I ordered the truffle pasta and swiss chard cooked in the Dalmatian way and Jimmy opted for the steak and truffle sauce with roasted potatoes. I also ordered the mushroom soup to start which was just so delightful!
Our meals came out and every misconception that I could possibly have about Trsatica was completely wrong. The food was fabulous. More than fabulous, Jimmy's beef with truffle sauce was one of the best meals he has ever had. The sauce was so good that it is actually impossible to describe, but just imagine a dozen of the cutest puppies, all with truffle breath, dog piling you with kisses. That’s about the closest way to explain the experience. We said earlier that you were going to hear a lot about truffles, well here it is. That sauce was the perfect balance of truffle, beef, onion, and garlic. It was something that I never had, but if I could put that on everything I eat from now on, I would be completely content and spoiled.
Tumblr media
My pasta was great. Was it Jimmy’s steak level of fantastic? No, but it was really good. The swiss chard was probably cooked with truffle, garlic and onion for a month and then introduced to potatoes the last few hours. The pasta was homemade and the sauce made me want to lick the bowl. I loved it all.
Tumblr media
Once we finished we had about an hour and a half before we needed to get on the road to our hotel/winery where we had a wine tasting. We wanted to check out the view from the castle (it was really just a smallish fortification) and see how far we could get down the stairs. The fortification was really standard, I say this being from a very privileged perspective. We have seen a lot of castles and fortifications in our travels and this really wasn’t anything special. However, the views were beyond stunning, albeit a little concerning (from a height perspective) at times. The best part was the castle’s sigil which appeared to be a dragon with the head of a rooster. I deeply regret not getting a picture of one of the 10 foot tall statues that adorned the courtyard.
Tumblr media
We finished the Trsat Castle and moved on to the cathedral at the top of the mountain. To be honest, the stairs leading to the cathedral weren’t super obvious and we realized we didn’t have enough time to make it down the mountain. Instead we opted to continue to the tallest point of the mountain via more stairs where we were able to follow the story of Jesus via large statues along the path. The views were beautiful and it was obvious that a lot of money was spent on the 20ish depictions that they had.
From there, we had about an hour ride to our hotel for the night, Villa Dobravac. Our entire drive from Rijeka was beautiful. We got to see the fall leaves and drive through several mountains via some impressive tunnels. We pulled up to Villa Dobravac and it was more beautiful than the pictures on the internet. It was a stunning villa that opened up to a beautiful vineyard and a more amazing downtown. At this point, we had about 30 minutes before our tasting and I just needed to go for a run. I donned my running clothes and off I went for a mile and a half. It’s funny, from pictures and even just looking at the downtown area it looks like it must be miles in the distance, but, in fact, it’s only about a half a mile away. I was able to quickly run to town and through the market in time for our tasting.
Tumblr media
We had scheduled a 5 wine and tapas tasting. We started off with two whites, moved on to an orange, continued on to a bold red and finished with a dessert wine. The pairings and our “wine guide” were perfect. We learned about the Istrian grape, Terna, which seems to produce wines very reminiscent of a Cabernet Sauvignon. We also had a really nice and really aged orange wine. If you remember, we had one the day before but it was honestly a little too strong and “liquor” tasting for me. This was a bit smoother and felt like it could be enjoyed like a Port.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once we got wrapped up (and watched the stunning sunset), we made our way towards downtown. Our wine guide/ receptionist gave us a few recommendations that we should watch for. We walked along the old city walls and came across a bar/ cafe that seemed to have a lot of locals. They had a wonderful view of the Sea and a picturesque seating along the cobblestones and Venetian style houses. We decided it was too early for dinner and that we just wanted to sit and enjoy each other's company and the incredible views. I grew up in Atlanta, where there is a ton of light pollution, so I have a pretty serious obsession with seeing the stars. We were able to gaze upon more stars that I have seen in a really long time. The sky was beautiful, the wine was great and the company was wonderful. It’s really hard to ask for more in life.
After a few drinks, we decided to walk towards food but ultimately decide on where to eat based on a few things. 1. Is there a nice view (in this case we walked along the iconic harbor). 2. Are there pictures on the menu/anywhere a customer can see. We figured out early on in our travels that the more pictures of food a place puts on their menu or on signs outside their entrance, the more likely it caters to tourists. We quickly found one of the recommendations (turns out a few were closed - maybe for the season or maybe just for the night) that didn’t have pictures and looked relatively busy. We walked up and were quickly greeted by an older gentleman who gave us a selection of seats outside near a heater.
Sidebar - the weather is super interesting, it feels like high 70’s/ low 80’s during the day and quickly drops to high 40’s at nights. It’s really hard to dress appropriately.
We were seated and quickly given a menu. Again, I won’t bore you with details but they were busy. The older gentleman that seated us (we’re pretty sure he was the retired owner and his son has taken over), quickly got our drink order (IMO always the right call), brought us our bottle of wine and waited for our waiter, his son, to get our order. It was the end of season, and his son was not expecting such a huge crowd. Thankfully, we had our bottle of wine and were happy to wait an hour+ for food. The waiter was very apologetic and was managing the best he could. Even his dad was going around and helping where he could, despite not being able to get around very well.
I ordered a seasonal soup with dumplings and a truffle pasta (obvi) and Jimmy ordered a carbonara. If we are going back to our game of who won, it was Jimmy. 100%. That’s not to say that mine wasn’t great and that I won’t be thinking of it back home, but Jimmy’s was better.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If you find yourself making a similar journey as ours, it's worth it to go a little out of the way to eat at Trsatica in Rijeka, both for the views and food. Do yourself a favor and don't drive down to the motorized hellscape that is their city center.Just stay on top of the mountain watch the anarchy from your safe perch. As previously mentioned, also plan a couple days for Rovinj. I’d also recommend a shoulder season visit. I don’t know if it gets crowded during the summer, but I know that it felt very spacious for our October visit. It’s somewhat small and you can definitely see everything in 24 hours, but you won’t want to. Soak it in, explore the wine shops and galleries along the cliff walls. Maybe don’t walk up the cathedral belltower (more on that next post), but certainly enjoy gazing upon it. Watch the fisherman do their work and enjoy it from a port-side restaurant. Just don’t try to do it too fast, this is one of those coastal towns that is best appreciated when you’re not being rushed.

The Grand Tour's Croatian Finish Line Girl Doesn't Own A Cat - Exclusive
Tumblr media
2017 was a great year for many reasons, not least of which was the arrival of the second season of The Grand Tour. In Episode 4, which dropped on Amazon Prime Video on 29 December, the boys decided to address perhaps the most frequently and harshly spoken criticism of Season 1: scripted-ness. Aptly titled ‘Unscripted’, the episode’s main film saw the trio head to Croatia to demonstrate what unscripted TV actually looks like by not doing any preparation whatsoever.
The intrinsic irony, of course, is that this was probably among the most intensely scripted films of the entire season, given James’s random insistence on reinventing the wheel by reinventing the fire engine and the perfectly timed appearance of an exquisite rally track on which Jeremy and Richard could race their respective cars. This isn’t a criticism, of course; it silenced the critics and produced an immensely entertaining segment, thus felling two media birds with one automotive stone.
One particularly excellent (and in no way unscripted) scene saw Jeremy’s Audi TT and Richard’s Ariel Nomad pull up for a drag race and immediately realise that they needed someone to wave the starting flag. Clarkson suggested that they recruit ‘a local person' to perform this simple task. Then, a producer hopped into a time machine and travelled a few weeks into the past, scoured the Internet for Croatian models and contacted Silvija Jurin, before jumping back to the present day and escorting her to the track. Presumably.
Silvija Jurin is a marketing expert by day and a model by night. She resides in the Croatian city of Zadar, and in her twelve years of modelling work she has starred in several commercials and advertising campaigns and done much fashion work, in addition to a spell as a local television host. She was contacted by the Grand Tour production team in advance of the filming and she is undoubtedly one of the tragically unsung stars of The Grand Tour.
Initially, she was installed as the start line for the race, responsible for the countdown and the waving of the flag. Once the Hamster and the Orang-utan realised that that was never going to work, for obvious reasons, she was transferred to the finish line and the start line was staffed thereafter by another incredibly talented on-screen personality, namely The Grand Tour’s Sound Supervisor, Russell Edwards.
Tumblr media
Having irritated Hammond with her obvious Clarksonian bias (can we blame her?) she is escorted off in the ape's Audi to feed her cat. Or is she? If only it were that simple. In a world exclusive that will surely take the entire automotive and televisual industries by storm and upend countless long-established institutions, Shifting Lanes can reveal that Silvija Jurin does not own a cat.
Tumblr media
Clarkson responded with shocking indifference when confronted with the troubling revelation
I know what you're thinking. And you're right – when Silvija had hopped into Clarkson's Audi, he did indeed say that she needed to ‘go and feed her cat'. However, crucially, Silvija herself said only that she had to feed her ‘pet'. As it turns out, Silvija is a dog lover and owns a black Labrador called Dot.
Tumblr media
Silvija and Dot
Fear not, for Shifting Lanes shall unashamedly reveal that which W. Chump & Sons and Amazon Prime Video were unwilling or unable to. As well as the hidden truth about domesticated animals in her possession, this tell-all interview sees Silvija discuss her favourite cars, what she really thinks of Jeremy Clarkson, what it’s like meeting James May, and more. Read on.
HAD YOU DONE ANY TV WORK BEFORE THE GRAND TOUR?
In my twelve years working as a model, I've done a lot of TV work, including several commercials. For a while, I worked as a local television host on a series about the Špancirfest festival in 2013 in the city of Varaždin. This is a very famous festival which provides a special experience of the continental part of Croatia. It’s definitely worth putting on your to-do list for when you visit Croatia! I’ve also shot promotional videos for the Tourist Board in my home city of Zadar. So, yes! I’m never far from TV work and shootings, and I love it. The camera also loves me, so the love goes both ways.
HAD YOU WATCHED THE GRAND TOUR BEFORE THEY CONTACTED YOU?
Of course!
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT IT? WHAT DO YOU LOOK FORWARD TO IN IT?
I like their humour – whatever you do, please don’t stop making jokes! And I have to admit that when I was filming with them I was subconsciously watching the whole production, which was unbelievable. Your skin is burning.
HOW DID THE GRAND TOUR GET IN TOUCH WITH YOU?
They have a good nose for making stories, and I was very lucky. They were looking for a local model, I sent them two photos and they called me back in less than an hour to tell me I’d got the job. It happened so quickly.
WHAT WAS YOUR REACTION WHEN THE GRAND TOUR CONTACTED YOU?
I was very happy, but I didn’t really have time to think about it at that point. I just had to go with the flow.
DID JAMES MAY SAY ‘HELLO’ VERY POLITELY WHEN HE MET YOU?
Yes, like a very polite gentleman.
WHAT IS IT LIKE WORKING ON THE SET OF THE GRAND TOUR?
We’re all professionals, so working with them is easy-going. All shootings are interesting in their own right because they each produce unique stories. This shooting was interesting, honourable and unforgettable.
WHAT DID YOU AND JEREMY GET UP TO OFF-CAMERA?
There isn’t much free time off-camera. Everyone came to Croatia to do serious stuff, to produce a quality recording, so most of the time we were just doing our jobs. Especially Jeremy.
WHICH CAR DID YOU PREFER – JEREMY’S AUDI TT OR RICHARD’S ARIEL NOMAD?
If I had an Ariel Nomad I would crash it very quickly, because it’s the kind of car that begs me to drive it on mountains and unpaved roads. So Jeremy’s Audi TT would be much better for me. And the blue paint goes well with my green eyes.
“Whatever you do, please don't stop making jokes!”
WHAT DO YOU DRIVE?
An Opel Corsa 1.6. It’s amazing how it never needs repairing. Everything in my car is manual so I never take it to the garage. I dare to fix some tiny things myself, like the radio, windows and wipers. I don’t touch the engine but I know how to change the oil and tyres, and even get a car with a dead battery going again. Not bad for a woman!
WHAT KINDS OF CARS DO YOU GENERALLY LIKE?
I don’t like low-sitting cars because I’m tall and it’s hard to get into them, so Jaguars aren’t perfect for me, haha! I like Jeeps, big cars that are strong on road safety. The last one I was in was a Toyota CHR. That’s a nice car.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE CAR?
My favourite car is my Opel, the one I drive all the time. I’m happy with it because it’s completely functional. But, if I had to name another, I’d say the Rimac C_Two. Because it’s Croatian and it looks amazing. It’s so sexy and powerful.
“The rimac c_two is so sexy and powerful”
WHEN VISITING CROATIA, WHERE SHOULD YOU GO AND WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?
That is a tricky question because there are so many different experiences Croatia can give you, but I’ll do my best. If you don’t care about costs and you’re a Game of Thrones fan, you should definitely visit Dubrovnik (the main filming location for King’s Landing, the capital of the Seven Kingdoms in the show). It is one of the most powerful cities I’ve visited, and I’ve travelled a lot. I'd suggest Zadar, my hometown, for people who like to go out and be active in nature, as there are many natural parks and other beauties in the area. There are undiscovered coves and sea peaks on the island of Dugi Otok, there are thousands of beautiful islands in the Kornati National Park, Plitvice Lakes has many waterfalls, Paklenica National Park has endless peaks and climbing rocks, and Vranjsko Jezero National Park is a bird reserve where over 250 species live. Your knees will sneeze from the natural beauty at these places.
If you like big cities, Zagreb (the capital) is the only choice. A quarter of the Croatian population lives there so you’ll meet a lot of people and find plenty of branded shops and other usual big city attractions. It is a very lively city. If you’re more romantically-inclined, you must visit the city of Varaždin. It’s a baroque city, a bicycle town and a city of flowers, with a unique atmosphere and very charming vintage-style streets. For those who’d rather party through the night, there’s Zrče Beach in the city of Novalja, near Pag. There are very famous parties twenty-four hours a day, all throughout summer. And finally, don’t forget to visit Vukovar. It’s the only place in Croatia where you can really experience some history. The remnants of past days are still there to be seen today, creating an unforgettable experience.
“What am i supposed to do? is this ok? who knows!”
“it's like having sex all the time but never having experienced orgasm”
Croatia is full of history and stories. Wherever you decide to visit, you will be gladly welcomed by all Croatians, and you will be offered whatever local delicacies are available. And we do like to eat and drink well. You should try a Croatian ham called pršut, or the meat of young lambs that eat salty grass all year long. It is too good to describe.
WHAT IS THE MOST AMUSING THING TO HAPPEN TO YOU IN THE COMPANY OF PETROLHEADS?
The most amusing thing was to be there, on the set of The Grand Tour, participating in a completely unscripted film. I was relaxed and independent, but I didn’t understand what was going on. What am I supposed to do? Is this OK? Who knows! But somehow, it all came together perfectly. As if I knew what I was doing, haha! It was very funny, wasn’t it? So, perhaps I naturally belong on The Grand Tour team!
DO PEOPLE ALWAYS TRY TO SHOW OFF TO YOU AND END UP EMBARRASSING THEMSELVES?
Well, that’s not what Croatian people do. We all love ourselves so we don’t need to show off to anyone.
HOW HARD WAS IT TO PRETEND TO LIKE CLARKSON SO MUCH FOR THAT AMOUNT OF TIME?
Who said I was pretending? I always say that everyone should do everything with genuine passion, whatever life gives you. If you're not emotionally invested in what you're doing, you are just wasting your life. It's like having sex all the time but never having experienced orgasm. It's very sad. That's why, honestly, you should enjoy everything you do. Or don't do it.
WHO DO YOU LIKE BEST OUT OF JEREMY, RICHARD AND JAMES?
They taught me that there aren’t any stupid questions, just stupid answers, so I’d say that I like them all equally. Each has their own attractive qualities. One is mysterious, the other is ridiculous and the third is hardworking.
WHO CHOSE YOUR WARDROBE FOR THE FILMING? DID YOU PICK YOUR OWN CLOTHES?
Yes, I chose my own outfits. They were the best I could find at the time.
WOULD YOU RATHER FIGHT ONE HORSE-SIZED DUCK OR A HUNDRED DUCK-SIZED HORSES?
That's a question that requires a lot of thought. I think I'd rather choose one horse-sized duck. A hundred horses mean a hundred problems.
WERE YOU SUCCESSFUL IN FEEDING YOUR CAT?
“Perhaps i naturally belong on the grand tour team”
I hate to break the myth of the cat but according to my personality, I have to be honest. Perception can be fucked up, it can distort reality so often people see and hear what they want to. So, now you finally know: I don't have a cat. I only said ‘pet'! I'm a dog-lover. I have a black Labrador. Her name is Točka, which means Dot.
“Perception can be fucked up”
WOULD YOU LIKE TO WORK WITH THE GRAND TOUR TEAM AGAIN?
I’d love to!
“I never have a plan, just an idea”
DO YOU HAVE ANY FUTURE PLANS TO WORK WITH THE GRAND TOUR AGAIN?
I never have a plan, just an idea.

Zadar city guide: Where to eat, drink, shop and stay in Croatia's coastal gem
Zadar city guide: Where to eat, drink, shop and stay in Croatia’s coastal gem
Tumblr media
Three thousand years in the making, Zadar is a mixture of heritage meets the here-and-now. There are ancient Roman streets and harbours used since antiquity; isolated coves, near-empty national parks and insanely-gorgeous vineyards, too. Venetian-era cathedrals and chess board castles, without the gut-punch of Split or Dubrovnik’s Game of Thrones crowds. In true Croatian style, there are…

Immigration to Croatia, how beautiful is the "paradise on earth" written by Shaw?
The red tiles shining in the sun, the quadrangle of the monastery, the spire of the church bell tower, the ancient city wall full of history... Time seems to have stood still here. This is the country that has been rated as the best travel destination in Europe by Lonely Planet.
Tumblr media
1. The magnificent coastline connects all the beauty of Croatia
The coastline of more than 1,700 kilometers is the lifeline of Croatia, giving Croatia a unique and beautiful scenery. The No. 8 road along the coast is a beautiful line of ancient cities, fortresses and bays.
2. The seawater of Croatia are like the sapphire
The seawater of Croatia are crystal clear, and you can still see the coral reefs in the distance. At the end of the sea, the sapphire-like blue waters connect the pure sky.
3. The most beautiful sunset in the Mediterranean Sea on the coast
Choose a sunny night, just sit on the beach, close your eyes, listening to the sound of the waves rushing, and enjoy the smell of the sea breeze. When you open your eyes again, you will be shocked by the beauty :
The orange-red light from the setting sun sprinkles the entire blue ocean. The sunset slowly disappeared behind the clouds. Until the sky is completely dark, the stars appear.
Tumblr media
4. Stroll through the Croatian National Park and you will discover the real "paradise on earth"
The Plitvice Lakes National Park is the most beautiful and famous national park in Croatia. The park covers an area of 19,462 hectares, more then 70% of it is forest area. It is consists of 16 connected mountain lakes. Enter the park, you will see the lush green trees, beautiful waterfalls, and crystal clear waters.
5.The Sea Organ plays the unique wave music in the world
Have you heard the music played by the sea?
Come to the Sea Organ to hear it!
In the seaside city of Zadar, there is a sea organ on the seashore. The rows of slate steps are specially designed. When the sea breeze blows the waves, it will sound a soft, deep sound like a pipe organ.
 6. Pursue the "Game of Thrones" and step into the King's Landing
Dubrovnik, the "Pearl of the Adriatic", are given a second life because of the "Game of Thrones".
Walking into this ancient city, the shops on both sides of the street, the beautiful houses and the palace left in the Middle Ages complement each other;
7. Bathing in the most brightest sunshine in Europe
Hvar Island has both leisure of the island and the Eastern European style. The locals like to talk about olives and sea breeze, as well as a rave party that started after a cold drink.
It is the most sunny and lush island in the Adriatic. You can enjoy 300 days of sunshine throughout the year, with 2,728 hours of sunshine! Croatia is indeed a paradise on earth, a best place to enjoy life and get close to nature.

Croatia
May 29 - June 6, 2019
I flew from Barcelona (BCN) to Zagreb (ZAG) for $105.72 on Brussels Airlines (+ $28.97 checked bag), with a pricey layover in Brussels, Belgium. This was a trip of a lifetime led by my hosts, Marko and Kika. They made sure we only ate the best on every stop along their perfect itinerary so I barely said bok (hello), dobar dan (good afternoon), hvala (thank you), and kikiriki (peanut).
Croatia is one of the most beautiful countries I’ve ever been to and such a welcome reprieve after the hustle of Spain. Also, the food is next level incredible!
Zagreb
Tumblr media
Zagreb’s upper town and downtown never feel overcrowded is full of historical landmarks,  small museums, art galleries, and fun bars. You should check out the Croatian Parliament building, the Lotrscak tower, St. Marc Church, Museum of Broken Relationships, and Stross promenade.
As for Downtown Zagreb, check out the main square, Jelačić Square as the starting point for exploring the downtown. The square is large, with lovely buildings surrounding it on all four sides. The buildings feature various architectural styles: from post-modernism, Art Nouveau, and Biedermaier.
Nearby is Tkalčićeva Street, lined with cafes, restaurants, and small shops. Seek out Croatian food and you will eat well. Then, climb up to Dolac Market, spread on two floors (open-air and enclosed). It’s fun to check out what’s happening in Cvjetni Trg (Flower’s Square) as well.
Hard to describe why, but I recommend driving out to Mirogoj Cemetery; lots of history and a peaceful atmosphere out there.
Samobor
Tumblr media
A 40-minute drive west will take you to Samobor, deserving of a walk up and down the river, with the castle overlooking the town. Be sure to have some Bermet dessert wine from the area. We also saw a very impressive cave (Grgosova špilje) for 25 kuna and had one of the best meals of the trip across the street at Kod špilje grgos.
Zadar
Tumblr media
Three hours south is Zadar, the oldest continuously-inhabited Croatian city. It was the first time I’d seen the Adriatic Sea! It didn’t disturb much, but we went a few days after someone damaged the sea organ solar panels. The Sea Organ is a public art installation by Croatian architect, Nikola Bašić. On the face of it, it looks like a set of marble steps descending into the sea. But below the steps, are narrow channels that connect 35 organ pipes.
This was an excellent route instead of Plitvice Lakes National Park since there was a worry of rain this day, and I’ll come back for the waterfalls another time!
Zaton
Tumblr media
From here, drive North ten minutes to Mashtel Distillery in Zaton. High quality brandies and homemade wine along with traditional local appetizers like cheese, pancetta, and anchovies. They have an experience that is well-worth it on Airbnb!
Split
Tumblr media
We ate good seafood. We walked around and saw all the things (e.g. Diocletian’s Palace, Pjaca square, Cathedral of Saint Domnius, Peristil Square). I was excited to see spots that Game of Thrones had shot at, but there was much more excitement ahead. The weather is just perfect here and so we enjoyed the pool at our Airbnb.
Bosnia
Tumblr media
I was in Bosnia for twenty minutes as we drove through! Not much to report there, but sure looks pretty.
Ston
Tumblr media
This tiny city of 2,332 people stole my heart and I truly hope I return to scale the walls and eat all the shellfish. Honestly, had the best seafood of my life (e.g. oysters, mussels, clams [kunjka]). I don’t want to tell you how much I love it because I love it so much.
Dubrovnik
Tumblr media
Of course I hummed the theme to Game of Thrones, out loud and in my head, the entire day. Push past the crowds and explore within the city walls. Have a coffee, beer, and ice cream - but not all at once. And, of course, don’t forget the small island, Lokrum. It’s a protected natural reserve and also the largest park of Dubrovnik.

Croatia is a beautiful country with its turquoise blue waters, a Mediterranean climate, and medieval architecture. In autumn, we could see the most popular historic sites outside of the massive tourist season of summer. The water is still warm for swimming, and the fall colors are amazing. There are various festivals and holidays to appreciate making this the perfect time to visit. This was a wonderful introduction to Croatia and it is now our favorite country in Europe. If you like autumn like we do, find out why this is the best time to visit Croatia.
Why Autumn?
Brianna is borderline obsessed with autumn, and Croatia has an excellent blend of fall activities and places to visit. We love fall colors and the temperatures are moderate and comfortable. Most of the things you can enjoy in the summer are also available in autumn. Each city we visited had different activities and festivities that were wonderful this time of year. Best of all, no selfie-sticks!
Zagreb
The capital city of Croatia was the first place we visited. After being in Rome, it was a relief to get away from all the people and enjoy a new culture. It was cloudy most of the time, but that did not stop us. We loved the charm of the city with a cathedral, many old churches, and the main square. It was peaceful walking around the city at our own pace and sometimes purely on our own. The cooler weather made the hot wine more welcoming.
Museums and Art Exhibitions
On a rainy day, we visited the Museum of Broken Relationships and the Illusion Museum. Both were much more entertaining than we expected and a perfect way to stay indoors. We also visited the Museum of Contemporary Art that had some unique pencil artworks by Davor Vrankić. We visited so many museums at a discounted rate with a Zagreb Card.
Architecture
The Zagreb Cathedral dominates the skyline of the city and is the tallest building in Croatia. It is a gothic style building built in 1906, which is relatively new compared to many similar style cathedrals in Europe.
The St. Mark’s Church is much smaller and older, being built in the 13th century.  What we liked about this church is the coat of arms of Zagreb on the roof. That is not something we had seen before in our travels.
Other Things to See and Do
The Gric Tunnel is a former World War II bomb shelter built in 1943 that is free to enter. It is 1,150 feet long and has six exits. We missed this while in Zagreb, but it is on the list for next time. This is a great place to visit on a rainy autumn day.
We walked down Tkalciceva Street to check out the cultural scene. It has many colorful buildings, and it is full of restaurants with outdoor seating. There are plenty of streets to wander and check out the street art without many people around.
Zagreb 360 is the second tallest building in the city and it has a viewing platform where we had a spectacular view of the city below. We enjoyed coffee there and this is also included with the Zagreb Card.
The Lotrščak Tower and Grič Cannon have an interesting history and the cannon fires off at noon each day. We thought a bomb was going off when we heard it the first time and then we looked into it and found where to go see it live. The shortest cable car in the world, the Zagreb funicular, leads right up to it if you don’t want to walk up the hill.
Zadar
Zadar will always have a special place in our hearts. It is the smallest of the cities we visited in Croatia, but this made it remarkable. The old town was nearly empty this time of year, so we could walk around and see the beautiful waterfront with no one else. It became more lively in the evening with its many restaurants and holiday festivities. The city is full of old historical monuments and the sunsets here are awesome with the turbulent autumn skies. Zadar is known as the city of romance and love.
Museums and Art Exhibitions
Zadar has a few Art Galleries and Museums for rainy days. One we went to is the Museum of Ancient Glass, which contains collections of Roman glassware with goblets, jars, and vials from archaeological sites across Dalmatia.
Architecture
The Church of St. Donatus was built in the 8th and 9th centuries. It is in the center of the old town and you can climb the nearby tower up until the end of October when it closes for the season. While we missed the tower, it was beautiful to see without the tourists.
Across the sea from Italy, Croatia was heavily influenced by the Roman Empire. These Roman Forum ruins date back to the 1st-century B.C.E. It is easy to spot where giant columns once stood next to this church.
Other Things to See and Do
A couple of our favorite places to visit in Zadar were the Sea Organ and the Sun Salutation. These are on the waterfront in Old Town and a beautiful place to enjoy the sunset while snacking on some roasted chestnuts.
The Sun Salutation lights up at night with various color patterns, and it is entirely solar-powered. Near the sun are the 9 planets spaced out proportionally across the waterfront. It is best to visit this place at night, and without the summer crowds, we had a clear view of the show.
The Sea Organ is an amazing creation powered by nature, where the waves push air up through pipes and create music. If the sea is rough, the intensity of the sounds increase. It is one of the most amazing things we experienced in Zadar.
Speaking of rough seas, we watched a storm come in. The water came right over the sea wall and we had to be careful or else we would have gotten wet. In autumn, there is a greater chance to catch a storm and see such dramatic waves.
The narrow streets of Zadar are also fun to explore and we walked almost all the streets in the old part of town. Look at how this van barely fits in between the walls.
We also walked around Queen Jelena Madijevka Park that has some nightclubs that weren’t yet open, but serve drinks until 4am most nights. This didn’t stop them from playing tunes during the day to entice people to come. This nightclub is called Ledana Lounge Bar, and we will have to check it out when it is open.
Split
Split is the second-largest city in Croatia, and it also has an old town that became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We were looking forward to seeing Split after hearing so many good things about it. We loved the dramatic mountains and stellar coastline surrounding Split and the old architecture. We did not spend enough time here and hope to go back again sometime.
Museums and Art Exhibitions
The Split Gallery of Fine Arts has a collection of modern and contemporary art with nearly 3500 pieces. There is also a Game of Thrones Museum since so much filming took place in Split and throughout the country. We didn’t go to the museum but we did go to a nearby shop to sit on an Iron Throne replica. We felt powerful!
Architecture
Diocletian’s Palace and the surrounding old town have some incredible architecture. The white walls and paths are extraordinary.  While we were here, we heard a Dalmatian ensemble singing. The acoustics in this place were amazing. Underground, there are tunnels where you can tour the dragon cave from Game of Thrones.
We climbed to the top of the Cathedral of Saint Domnius for some expansive views of the city in almost all directions. The views were incredible, and we even saw a rainbow. The cathedral was built in the 7th century and is the oldest Catholic Cathedral in the world that remains in use in its original structure.
Klis Fortress is a medieval fortress above a village by the same name near Split. It is over 2000 years old and the remains are an incredible location for sunset with views of the entire city of Split below. We love ruins, so this was a real treat to visit. It is another Game of Thrones filming location and we even saw DRAGONS there. We had it all to ourselves as there weren’t many people there.
Other Things to See and Do
Marjan Park is on the west end of the city, and the trees turn copper color in autumn. It has various fantastic viewpoints and is on a large hill. We spotted a cat colony at the top and they appeared to be well taken care of.
We also did a day trip to Omiš, a small town with a fabulous nearby coastline. It was a place we felt at home and could easily stay for a while. There are some spectacular swimming spots along the coast and a couple of fortresses to explore. The water was still warm enough to swim in November.
Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik is by far our favorite city in Croatia, even though every other place in Croatia feels like a close second. The history here is fascinating, and we loved seeing a walled city for the first time. It is one of the most well-preserved medieval cities which was enchanting. We are also Game of Thrones fans, and so many scenes were filmed here as well. These St. Jesuit Stairs were used in the walk of shame scene. Shame! Shame! Shame!
Because of the hit tv series, it has been an increasingly popular city, so we were grateful to see it in autumn. While there were still plenty of people, we managed to be in many empty spaces throughout the city. There are also lots of street cats everywhere to keep Brianna happy.
Museums and Art Exhibitions
There are many museums in Dubrovnik for rainy days, all within easy walking distance. We visited the Ethnographic Museum which displays historical farming, lifestyle & cultural traditions. The museum was built in an old granary where we saw how grain was processed and stored. Others we did not see include the Maritime Museum, and the Homeland War Museum. We learned about the Croatian War from a local but would like to learn more on our next visit to Croatia.
Architecture
The old walled city makes up most of the unique architecture and is a UNESCO Heritage site itself. We walked along the city walls nearly empty this time of year, and it was amazing. Surrounding the walled city are three different fortresses. Fort Lovrijenac is just outside the city walls and has beautiful panoramic views from above.
Bokar Fortress is on the opposite side of Dubrovnik West Harbour from Fort Lovrijenac. It is an iconic 15th-century fortress and is uniquely cylindrical.
The Minceta Fortress acted as the highest point of the defense system protecting Dubrovnik. It sits at the northernmost point of the city walls with incredible views in all directions.
The Pile City Gate is the entryway into the city walls. Upon walking through the gate we entered a different world from long ago. We had even more street cats greeting us when we arrived.
Other Things to See and Do
Rector’s Palace is a gothic-style building that also combines renaissance and baroque elements. It is a cultural history museum with prison cells, a courtroom, arsenal, and the quarters of the rector. In autumn, we could see these stairs completely empty with a little patience.
One of the most interesting places we went to was the Belvedere Hotel. A local took us to this hotel that was destroyed in an attack by Serbian forces during the Croatian War of Independence. The hotel structure still remains, and it was recently purchased by a Russian investor. She explained some history of the place and her time living through the war. We do not recommend you go inside as it can be dangerous. We did enter with the help of a local familiar with the building and its weak spots.
Walking the narrow streets of the city needs mentioning because that is a lot of fun in itself. Getting lost in the narrow streets and petting some cats is a relaxing way to spend a morning any time of year.
Plitvice Lakes
Plitvice Lakes National Park is very popular in the summer, but the fall colors here are incredible. With a bit of added snow, we were in eye-candy land. Best of all, there is hardly anyone there this time of year. We had so many trails all to ourselves. This natural landscape makes for an easy day-trip from Zagreb or Zadar.
Festivals, Events, and Holidays
We arrived in Zagreb in November and just barely missed All Saints’ Day. On November 1st people all across Croatia head to graveyards to lay flowers and candles for the deceased. We did visit the largest graveyard in Croatia, Mirogoj Cemetery, which is the best place to enjoy this holiday. The fall colors there were gorgeous.
The Zagreb Film Festival is the largest film festival in the country and lasts 9 days in November. If we had a longer stay in Zagreb, it would have been fun to see this festival.
Just like other Croatian cities, Zadar was well decorated for Christmas in its old town. This time of year there are many sailing events, runs, and boat shows. There is also a traditional mass on St. Nicholas Day on November 6th.
In late October in Dubrovnik, there is an Autumn Music Festival with a variety of music events. There is also a Food Festival with local culinary specialties. Since we arrived in late November, we enjoyed the Advent in the City Winter Festival. The festival starts in December and goes into January. Dubrovnik is very festive with Christmas trees, decorations, and lights everywhere.
Food
Fall is the season of food. We had to try some local Croatian dishes, hot wine, and even some dessert dough balls. The Christmas season starts early, and it was already in full force so we enjoyed the festivities.
Just about every bakery we stumbled upon had burek, which is a regionally traditional dish and good for a quick bite. These are very inexpensive and filling, which is perfect for travelers like us. Every coastal Croatian town will specialize in many seafood dishes as well. Fritule was a dessert we had frequently which are little dough balls covered in chocolate or other sweet sauces. Aaron also loved trying different craft beers throughout the country.
Final Thoughts
Croatia is an amazing country and we want to spend more time there on our next visit. After seeing so many places in Europe, we keep thinking about our time in Croatia the most. We loved the people, the food, and the architecture. There is still so much more for us to see and we keep adding more places to visit. It is a beautiful country to visit any time of the year ,but we particularly liked it in the fall.

Scaling The Zadar Mountains Was Never Easier!
Zadar is known for the Roman and Venetian remains of its coastal Old Town. With Venetian gates in the city walls, St. Mary’s Convent, with religious art dating to the 8th century, 12th-century St. Anastasia’s Cathedral and the circular, 9th-century pre-Romanesque church of St. Donatus, The Riva, or coastal gallery there are a lot of famous options for visiting. But the best part about Zadar is its mountains and mountains can be best enjoyed by cycling.

Silba. A People Friendly Island.
A young girl’s laughter echoes down the narrow street, and her mother responds with a laugh that’s also just exploding with joy.
This was getting caught in a traffic jam, Silba style.
This small island, an hour and a half boat ride from Zadar has free roaming kids, unshackled friendly dogs, some nuisance crows and absolutely zero cars. The whole island is a pedestrian zone officially, they…

Cogito Coffee And The Rise Of Specialty Coffee In Croatia
Croatia, now a coveted European travel destination, has always been rather wintery on the coffee scene. For decades it drank coffee like a classic Eastern European country—very, very hot. But, since joining the European Union and inviting in tourists from all over the globe, the sea-loving country has embraced their own new wave of coffee culture. One of the pioneers in the space is Cogito Coffee—“to think” works perfectly in both Croatian and in English.
“Seven years ago my wife, Hannah Powlison Belković, and I opened a coffee shop in downtown Zagreb called ‘Cafe u Dvoristu’ (a cafe in the courtyard),” says Matija Belković, co-owner of Cogito. “At the time this was one of two coffee shops in Zagreb that insisted on serving quality coffee.” Soon after they opened their doors, and showed the Croats how the rest of the world was experiencing specialty coffee, Matija Hrkać, one of Croatia’s best-known baristas, began hanging around regularly. It didn’t take long for the three to join forces and create Cogito.
“Six months later we opened a small coffee shop under that brand in downtown Zagreb,” Belković says. “Right now we have a growing network of wholesale clients as well as five of our own Cogito Coffee shops. Three of them are in Zagreb, and the other two are on the Croatian coast—in the cities of Zadar and, the latest, in Dubrovnik.”
The city of Dubrovnik, known for its fortressed walls and as a “Game of Thrones” location, is having a happy revitalization. “We felt that the coffee scene on the Croatian coast does not match the other gastronomical standards in the region,” Belković says. “While you can have great seafood and wine, finding a decent cup of coffee on the Croatian coast was next to impossible.” Of course, this is the perfect setting for a story of coffee triumph—dragons, or no dragons.
“One of the biggest challenges for us is that we are in many ways alone on the scene,” Belković says. “But so whatever we do on the scene makes a real impact, and we feel that our company is becoming competent in helping to shape the future of the local coffee scene. It is exciting to have the power and responsibility of introducing people to speciality coffee.”
And so they have attracted a fascinating medley of characters—a hip crowd of coffee cognoscenti, plus the neighborhood’s darlings and dappers. “The demographic is diverse, which tells us that the coffee and service takes precedence over lifestyle,” Belković says. For Croats, specialty coffee isn’t anywhere close to the status quo, and so a narrative driven by Cogito in a sustainable and authentic way is the real paragon here. “In a weird sort of way it is equally exciting to get the two totally different responses: ‘this is the best coffee I ever had’ or ‘this is the worst thing I ever tasted’—we rarely encounter anything in between,” Belković smiles.
“While we are not really into the models of Italian and Austrian coffee cultures, one thing we really want to preserve—which we got from those neighboring countries—is the fact that coffee is consumed on the premises and is primarily a social experience,” Belković says. “Croatians rarely drink coffee on the go, instead taking our time to enjoy it, often with friends.” Which is partly why Cogito’s locations are opened in unique spaces—like a back alley, or a courtyard, or even a very quiet street. For Cogito, it’s about creating a “destination” for customers.
“We serve two coffees that are season dependent, from our supplier Nordic Approach: our house blend (Tesla blend) and a single estate coffee that we rotate daily. We also brew filter coffees in Chemex and V60,” Belković says. “For roasting we use a Diedrich IR7, though we are in a process of upgrading to a different and bigger roaster (Probat UG22), as we feel that this type of roaster will be better suited to our preferred roasting style.”
And this fits in perfectly with their next season, expanding their wholesale footprint throughout the country. “One specific goal within the next two years is to invest into the farm-end of the production chain—to be constantly in touch with our coffee producers (especially in East Africa), develop long-lasting commitments and relationships with specific producers,” Belković says. This is good news not just for Cogito, but for Croatian coffee more broadly—as Cogito goes, so does the rest of the country.
Cogito Coffee has multiple locations in Croatia. Visit their official website and follow them on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
