The reason Goncharov was fun and worked well is because Tumblr didn’t plan for it, we just “yes and” it, everyone went with it and added to it with no planning while TikTok people with Zepotha are trying to recreate that by deciding to start a trend and tell people this movie existed, there isn’t even much more than “you look like this character” and sometimes people saying it was actually them.

The "Zepotha" trend on tiktok makes me SICK as an indie slasher fan. Why did they choose the name "Zepotha?" Name one fucking indie slasher from the 80's that isn't called something like House of Guts. "Zepotha" would be the name of an arthouse horror from the 70's created by a giallo-obsessed Johnny-come-lately director from New Jersey. Zepotha would be brought up in every other "obscure horror recs" thread on reddit until it became a circlejerk meme to even mention it.
"Oh you sound so mad, you sound like you just want to gatekeep--" I DO! I'M GATEKEEPING! None of these people even like slashers! They can barely make it through Fear Street, and then they still make fun of effects that aren't Marvel-sweatshop-grade CGI! You expect them to be able to create a fictional slasher movie with the conviction that this site had when it created Goncharov? Get! Off! Of! My! Lawn!

personal opinion but. the reason tiktok’s ‘zepotha’ isn’t doing great isn’t because of a lack of cohesion or poor reasoning behind it (although I’m sure these would’ve contributed). It’s because when I was first introduced to Zepotha it was as a fake movie concept. And when I was first introduced to Goncharov it was as me spending the entire morning trying to figure out why Tumblr was obsessed with some random movie.

to be clear: im not making fun of zepotha cause it's "copying goncharov" im making fun of it cause it's an inauthentic manufactured marketing stunt. there's a reason memes like goncharov or barbenheimer or some other "this doesn't make sense but does" memes work. it's because they come from that weird place of internet collaborative humor, where jokes get built upon one another like a naturally-flowing conversation. when marketers try to do this, it's like doing this with an ad, so it doesn't really work. it feels fake and shallow, like the person that started it doesnt even want to be here.

i dont care what kind of lore they're coming up with for that zepotha film or whatever the fuck over on tiktok, nothing will ever come close to the fact goncharov was spawned entirely from a label on a boot

TikTok is currently trying to make their own goncharov called zepotha.
So far for zepotha I’ve already seen 5 different plots and like 25 different characters. They can’t seem agree on scenes and everyone is just making up their own shit.
Goncharov started as a joke but ended up with a poster, a cast, memes, a wiki page, letterbox reviews, fanfics, cosplays, a over 40 page (last time I checked at least) google document with info and scenes about the movie, a soundtrack and even Martin Scorsese himself confirming he made this movie.
They’ll never be able to beat the masterpiece that is goncharov 1973.

ok but why is OP asking free labor out of houndreds of thousands of people for the convenient price of £500 💀
and they didn’t even make the poster either? they’re asking for free marketing and creative input for a product they don’t even know the story of this is where we’re at

Okay, so I saw a couple of people say that we should make Zepotha out of spite. The main thing that keeps popping up is summer camps and aliens (I think someone also wanted lesbians, but I mean who doesn't want lesbians?)
But I'd like to say that this really points out the difference between Goncharov and Zepotha.
Zepotha, in a very tiktok fashion, is being made based on a popularity contest. Zepotha will exist. It didn't already exist.
Zepotha is treated like it's being made, rather than like it already exists. It's an 80s movie not because it was made in the eighties, but just based on the vibes.
Tiktok is trying to make a movie, much more than they're pretending the movie already exists.
Goncharov on the other hand, is treated like it always existed. Tumblr made a fandom and not a movie. The clarifications and contradictions are just a normal product of fandom, especially a fandom of a lost media. It's normal for people to mix up details.
The details of Goncharov depended on people seeing a mentioned plot point and going along with it, 'yes, and'ing the bit. If there was a common plot detail you didn't like, you'd just talk about how much you didn't like that that happened in the movie.
Since Tiktok is writing a movie, the contradictions are more prominent, because people want Zepotha to be the story they want it to be, rather than the story it is.
Like, I find it some of the religious symbolism in Goncharov annoying, I feel like they overdid it with two 'eating the forbidden fruit' scenes, but I'm not going to say 'that didn't happen in Goncharov', because it did!! And there's nothing I can do about that.

"Goncharov this" and "zephota that " lets talk about the real mass hallucination/fake media the oldest one
Fucking
I, Libertine.
Aka the time a radio host got so angry about new York times best selling books list and the annoying people who claimed to read all of them he made up with his listeners a over the top ironic bullshit romance and told his listeners to just ask about it in libraries to confirm no one actually read the best selling books and it was just word of mouth and popularity that made those books famous and weeks after the bit started he got reports back from his listeners including a lady who said two women on her book club said they read the fake but and one didn't liked and a guy who made a fucking thesis about it and got a B
So tik tok sit the fuck down you are not the first nor the last not even the best

the fact that tiktokers decided to do the zepotha thing on purpose makes me feel so undeservedly smug. oh you had to tell people to talk about the fake movie? interesting. you fucking wish you could be half of what goncharov was

listen i didn’t even participate in goncharov but how is tiktok’s fake movie already so much worse. there’s like eighty named characters and no discernible plot. despite being an 80s horror movie it is het. no analysis just “guys that one scene got me fucked up” or “i think (new character i made up) deserved better”. personally i think they’re not committing hard enough

The fact that TikTok is trying to make Zepotha happen like it’s the “new Goncharov” is so offensive because like, there’s already a new Goncharov. And it’s an 80s slasher film. It’s called Goncharov’s Return (or Goncharov’s Revenge in the European release). Just the height of hubris. Learn your history.
