【CAEL5035 A2 Conclusion and Reflections】

In this experiment, the total video duration is approximately 3 hours, with each color or interaction interactive behaviour being recorded for about 5 to 8 minutes per session. I select 3 minutes from this footage for everyone to watch and listen to.

The main props: 3 Fish, fish tank, bells, wind chime, thin wire, C-stand, clothes hanger, fish food, 4 lights, 1 hydrophones, 1 zoomH6, various wooden blocks, stones tied with plastic candy paper, and water plants.

The main recordings included:

The sound of fish interacting with obstacles in red, green, blue, purple and daily light.

The sound of the fish opening and closing their mouths as they surface.

The sound of noodles rising and falling frequently in the water after being coated with rice.

The impact of environmental noise and vibrations on the fish.

Additionally, I gain a deep appreciation for the lure of food for animals.

In the absence of fish food, the fish would avoid the obstacles, and their activity levels were not high. Under the influence of the four sensitive colors, with the colors changing in the order of red, green, blue, and purple, the sound waveforms produced by the fish gradually slowed down, indicating that the fish's state gradually stabilized.

When the obstacles were coated with fish food, the fish's activity levels significantly increased, and they would interact with the obstacles frequently. However, there was a noticeable change in the goldfish's responsiveness to colors, which became irregular. Green became more active, colorless remained the most stable, and purple showed increased activity followed by a declining trend.

Unlike the birds in Research 1, fish did not interact with humans as frequently and intensively. This is speculated to be because, as aquarium fish, they have grown accustomed to the presence of humans, and the obstacles provide a sense of safety and hiding (I tried removing the obstacles, and they did indeed swim away rapidly when I approached). Even when influenced by humans, they were less likely to hit obstacles to create sounds. For birds, they can sense the potential threat of human movement at close range, and after being influenced by humans, they would take flight and then land on another musical instrument, creating interactive sounds. Moreover, fish depend on water for their livelihood, and water quality is critical for their survival. Since fish have small appetites, we couldn't provide excessive fish food in the hope of continuous, long-term interaction with the obstacles. For birds, we could scatter excess food on the instruments without significantly affecting their living environment, and they would eat based on their needs, creating a sustained interactive effect.

Tummy Travelling Sounds Practice

I use three types of microphones to record sound. One is a zoomH6, one is an Aquarian Audio Hydrophone that goes in the water and uses a puck adaptor to turn it into a contact microphone. i used the zoom to record a lot of ambient sounds, as well as a range of sounds from me kneading raw meat, crunching cabbage, and so on. The Aquarian Audio Hydrophone was used to record the sound of bubbles exploding, the sound of waves, and the sound of water entering a sewer pipe. And recorded heartbeats, bowel movements, and rubbing on the carpet with the contact microphone. It all combined to make the complete tummy trip!

Research Blog 1 - Watching The Sunset at Sea Alone (Assignment 1)

For assignment 1, I chose "Watching The Sunset at Sea Alone" as my theme. The equipment I used to record the material was a zoomH6, and the clips I recorded included ambient sounds of the station, rain, footsteps, wind blowing through the leaves, waves, and birds chirping. I wanted to give the listeners the feeling of being in the ocean and to achieve a very ethereal atmosphere. So I added a fade in and fade out effect to the remix of my recorded material. There is a short silence between the different sounds. All the sounds are played in a logical and sequential way, with a certain structure. I studied the concept of "Schizophonia". So I wanted to have some sounds in my project that were "not part of the original environment" but not out of place. So I added a section of my guitar playing at the end of the project, and transformed it with some electronic processor effects. Anyway, I hope all the listeners could feel the feeling of watching the sea alone when they listen to it.

My Shooting Day!

Recently, in Sydney, it is sunny with strong winds.

With my "sounder" the glasses and materials which belonging to the natural environment (pine, leaves, jacaranda, shells). I collected these ecological items in every corner of Sydney. I put the materials into the glass, and under the action of the wind, the glasses filled with different materials collided with each other to create a small sound.

In terms of location, I found four different locations that represent Sydney in my mind, Central Station, Sydney Tower Eye, Sydney Harbor Bridge and Sydney Opera House, as well as myUni Sydney University. These few places revolve around my life and have become a large part of my Sydney memories.

The environment, the materials produced by the natural environment, and the sound generator, the glass, the sound produced by their combined relationship shows the sound of Sydney.

In particular, apart from the zoomH6 that I used for recording, I used Canon HF11 to record scenes and pictures, which is an old dv player. But what I want to express is the hazy feeling that Sydney brings to my memory, and the process of filming is also very interesting.

Had a great weekend digging through the entire Zoom H6 manual hands-on with it and still very excited about the possible uses. It’s been forever since I was able to dedicate a full day to learning all of the features- left no page unturned of the whole 100 or so page manual, even pushing my myself to try even the functions I don’t think I would need or ever use.

Interesting thing- in deciding to go through all of those seeming irrelevant (to me) functions I totally found myself thinking of how I actually could use them in some very creative ways….definitely find my best learning method is hands on, step by step with the device- actually do the thing the manual describes- no matter how seemingly trivial.

Remembering back when I was younger and had much less gear- every new piece I finally saved up enough for and then finally got I would spend as much time as possible learning every function and using the shit out of it until every function would become muscle memory….it definitely felt good getting the chance to do that again with the H6. Got to have some fun in the backyard doing some random recording and testing out the very nice XY internal stereo mic.
