Gollum in THE HOBBIT graphic novel
"In 1989 Eclipse Comics produced a three-part adaptation of The Hobbit by Chuck Dixon, Sean Deming and illustrated by David Wenzel. A year later, due to public demand, this was subsequently re-issued as a single graphic novel that has remained in print ever since. The writers wisely chose to sensitively abridge Tolkien’s source text, rather than adapted the story and make any major changes. Hence this graphic novel version of The Hobbit retains much of the dialogue from the original novel and subsequently maintains the book’s inherent charm."

In Tolkien's letters, he said "they must be related", but he said this after writing that particular bit. It was in response to a letter he received asking why Sméagol expected to be given a gift rather than give one himself, being a hobbit. So, I think Tolkien wrote it, initially thinking of them as friends, but then "realized" they had a specific relation as he went into thinking about the hobbits and birthday customs. (Certain relatives will give gifts to the birthday hobbit)
Side note, Tolkien ended up saying that EVERYONE in the small community Sméagol was a part of was related.
So, honestly, this doesn't make me change my mind about shipping them. If they're all related, the only way to procreate or experience romance or love would be to do it with someone you're related to. And this isn't new in Tolkien's world. (In fact, this very thing is canonically going on in the Shire.) I wouldn't be surprised if Tolkien wrote them as if they were meant to be a romantic pair. Someone else has said this before, and they're right, but "my love" is a very romantic phrase and is not used by any friend/friend or relative/relative pair in the story.
Tumblr media
3-hit combo of finding out that smeagol and deagol are not related despite their silly rhyming names followed immediately by smeagol calling him "my love" every time he opens his mouth followed immediately by the killing him

Jackson's The Two Towers 21st Anniversary!
Tumblr media
A drawing for the 21st anniversary of Jackson's The Two Towers! That movie introduced me to what would become my favorite character of all time -- Sméagol - Gollum! I became obsessed quite quickly ~ seeing him crawl down the rock-face was so cool, and then seeing his pupils get big as he started to cry when Frodo threatened him with Sting! I thought he was very cute and interesting and funny! I would watch his scenes over and over and over, and I still do to this day hehehe ~
This is the order of my favorite scenes!
1.) The Passage of the Marshes (this is actually my favorite scene in all three movies!)
2.) Gollum and Sméagol
3.) Of Herbs and Stewed Rabbit
4.) The Forbidden Pool
5.) The Taming of Sméagol
6.) The Black Gate is Closed
7.) The Forests of Ithilien
8.) Gollum's Plan
9.) Farewell to Faramir
10.) Osgiliath
11.) The Tales That Really Mattered... (I'll go back and add why these scenes are my favorite later on!)
Oh! And to explain the drawing -- I know Frodo doesn't actually say this in the movie, but Gollum references Frodo "breaking his promise" and Sméagol says a few times "Master looks after us", and in the book Frodo made a promise to protect Sméagol, so I believe that it was after their little chat in the Dead Marshes that Frodo promised to look after him! There was more to that scene than we saw in The Two Towers, as well -- it's actually after Frodo reminds Sméagol of his name that he tells Frodo the story of his past (which we ended up seeing at the beginning of Return of the King, it's why he's narrating it, he's telling Frodo the story. "And we forgot the taste of bread...")

Happy 20th Anniversary to Jackson's Return of the King!
Tumblr media
In honor of the 20th anniversary of Peter Jackson's Return of the King, I drew my favorite scene in the movie!
Déagol: I caught a fish, Sméag! Sméagol! Sméagol: Pull it in! Go on, go on, go on! Pull it in!
I saw this movie in the theaters when it was released, and I was very excited to see young Sméagol!!! And shocked! I was also very incredibly disappointed because I hadn't read ROTK yet at that point and didn't know Sméagollum died. Very depressing! BUT, I'm glad at least that he didn't die miserably in the films, he finally reclaimed his precious and had a nice big smile, and didn't seem to be in a great deal of pain, he was so focused on the ring. And at least he was alive for most of the film, and very fun to watch ~
This is the order of my favorite scenes in ROTK:
1.) The Finding of the Ring (I really love that we got to see young Sméagol, see what he was like before the Ring, see Déagol and his relationship with him, see the transformation Sméagol went through! Amazing!)
2.) Gollum's Villainy (I just really love when Gollum and Sméagol talk to each other, they're very funny and it's wonderful to see them scheming.)
3.) The Stairs of Cirith Ungol (I LOVE how Sméagollum convinces Frodo that Sam wants the Ring, how close he gets, whispering in his ear, it's delicious~)
4.) Mount Doom (I love when Sméagollum attacks Frodo, it pleases me in many ways, the way he CHOKES him, mocks him! "Sméagol lied"!!! it gives me the shiveries ~ )
5.) Sam's Warning (Sméagollum knowing Sam knows he's up to something, and knowing Sam can't do anything about it, he just SMILES, and leans against the rocks looking so devious and pleased with himself, I love him so much)
6.) The Parting of Sam and Frodo (Sméagollum pretending to be asleep, so cleverly framing Sam, convincing Frodo that he TAKES things! Frodo choosing Sméagollum over Sam, YES!!!)
7.) Shelob's Lair (Sméagollum's clever plan, I love when he mockingly sings to him as he's stuck in the web, and I also love how Frodo wants to choke Sméagollum but stops himself. Sméagol's face when Frodo tells him he has to destroy it, Frodo saying "I have to destroy it for both our sakes", he cares about Sméagol even yet, beautiful!!)
8.) Crack of Doom (Sméagollum attacking Frodo, biting his finger off, reclaming the precious at last! Dancing and overjoyed! He and Frodo becoming one, fighting over the Ring, neither able to let it go!)
9.) Journey to the Cross-Roads (Wake up SLEEPIES!)
10.) Cross-Roads of the Fallen King ("We're not IN decent places..." "Come on HOBBITS!")
11.) Minas Morgal ("Full of... enemies...")

(Peter Jackson's films) Sméagollum knows Frodo because he knows himselfs. This makes it easy for him to deceive, trick, and manipulate Frodo. What upset Gollum more than anything, what made him hate Bagginses (Bilbo)? Baggins took his precious.
Tumblr media
So Sméagol knows to plant that seed in Frodo's mind; that Sam will take the Ring from Frodo. He understands the feeling it would bring to Frodo, that panic and distrust and paranoia, because he's experienced it himself.
Tumblr media
He then very cleverly waters the seed in Frodo's mind by framing Sam for eating the Lembas Bread. He knows the message Frodo will receive is "Sam TAKES things".

Tolkien said that Gollum was never naked, that he would have no issue stealing his clothes from orcs and things, and that the Elves would clothe him. I drew this with that in mind (I imagine these are clothings stolen from orcses)
