in the minus au- is sonic the only one who knows that the loop is happening? is he the only one that remembers each loop? the others dont look as effected by it yet
sonic is not the only one who knows what's happening: tails, knuckles, amy, and eggman all catch wind of what's going on and they remember past loops, etc. it takes them a few loops to actually figure out that they're stuck in a time loop, but they all do come to that conclusion early on. the only characters who don't remember anything from past loops are the classic characters who don't appear in the modern timeline, particularly mighty and ray. part of the effects that come with the merging of the timelines is the erasure of classic-specific characters (or something to that end). as a result, in each loop, either mighty or ray die at some point (i believe we also agreed that sometimes it's both, but for the most part it's only one of them per loop and it occurs randomly).
these loops go on for a long, long time. it wears down on everyone especially sonic, who's arguably the most affected mentally and emotionally by everything that's going on

What causes the time loop in your time loop au? Is it something to do with the time eater? Or is it something else?
it is related to the time eater! this is a very difficult question to give a simple answer to because it's QUITE convoluted and there are a LOT of specifics (and to be completely honest we're still workshopping it it's hard for even US to figure out). basically, classic does something with the chaos emeralds and the time stones (which don't mix since . yknow . chaos + time = time related chaos) and the anomaly gets the attention of the time eater who's like wait. hang on. these timelines are split. i actually don't like the fact that these timelines are splitting (this takes place after generations). that's not meant to happen! so i'm going to stitch them back together. but at this point the chaos emeralds from both the classic and modern realities have become separate enough to the point where they do NOT want to merge. so they unravel the stitching the time eater did, causing time to loop back to where things started. it's like the likepoles of a magnet repelling each other. so it's just a constant struggle between the time eater and the chaos emeralds simply not wanting to adhere to the timelines merging.
tldr: classic does something that fucks with time that gets time eater's attention, time eater does not like the fact that the timelines are split and tries stitching them back together, both sets of chaos emeralds don't want to merge and so they undo the stitching, causing the time loop, and resetting things.
there is a lot more to it in regards to how certain characters are affected by the loop, but that like, should probably be saved for another ask

I know the idea that a teacher wouldn't care that 8 of his students just got eaten is framed as absurdist humor, but it got me thinking more and more about a recurring theme of the show: why do the worker drones simply not seem to care when their compatriots die, sometimes quite gruesomely?
I think the answer lies with their maker, J.C. Jensen. If you were going to make millions of sentient worker A.I. whose sole purpose was to be worked to destruction and then callously discarded, would you want them caring about each other? Hell no, that's how robotic uprisings happen.
The nihilism is intentional; it's programmed right into them to keep them from caring beyond just enough basic survival instinct to keep them from damaging themselves (replacements cost money, after all). Even simple, mostly ineffective cooperatives like Khan's W.D.F. require them to push back against their own programming, and only a few individuals push themselves to a meaningful level of empathy.
Come to think of it, there's probably a societal metaphor in there somewhere.
