Newsomberg Facts - 7th Anniversary Countdown #18:
During an IG Live for 'Palm Springs' Andy proudly showed off his Children's Fairyland T-shirt, to his friend and co-star, Cristin Milioti, and confirmed that he had spent time there with Little Lady Newsomberg (see Newsomberg Fact #122).
What he didn't explain is how this same T-shirt had made its way into earlier promo, for the movie, when he wore it during the cast's Collider interview, at Sundance.
Tumblr media
After 15 years of traveling to both create and promote his work, Andy is something of an expert at packing. It's something he can usually do very quickly and efficiently and, now that his Dad instincts have kicked in, he's generally organized enough to ready himself the night before a flight.
However, in the run up to the festival, perhaps owing to an extended hiatus and the aftermath of a nasty winter cold, he was a little off his game and found himself stuffing items into a bag, last minute and seemingly at random, whilst Kiv waited, impatiently, for him to finish up.
Reasonably content that he had almost everything he needed, and even indulging himself with the inclusion of the infamous blue hoodie that he and Joanna had previously agreed probably had no business leaving the house, Andy was down by only one crucial item - the T-shirt that he had bought for himself when he, Joanna and their daughter had visited Fairyland. He'd intended to bring it along because time away from his little girl still doesn't sit well with him and he figured that having something associated with her be (literally) close to his heart might take the edge off how much he was going to miss her.
He searched everywhere for the shirt but to no avail until, dejected but not wanting to further curtail the time he had left to say goodbye to his family, he reluctantly decided that he'd have to leave without it.
That night, Andy, Kiv and Cristin settled into their Park City getaway a little too enthusiastically and, the following morning, after 3 hours sleep and entirely too much alcohol, a very delicate Andy dragged himself out of bed to go sell his movie. Rifling through the bag that he'd failed to empty the previous evening, he caught sight of something he had somehow missed during his packing frenzy. At the very bottom of the bag was his Fairyland T-Shirt and, wrapped inside it, a beautiful piece of Little Lady Newsomberg's 'artwork' (loosely depicting a Daddy/Daughter hug), captioned in Joanna's ornate handwriting with the words 'Good luck, Papa ❤'
Andy put on the shirt, placed the folded up picture in his pocket, and - armed with those beautiful vibes from his family - went on to secure the record for highest sale in Sundance history!
(Shout out to @vernonfielding for this one 💕)

I didn't think something I've been this pumped about for so long could possibly exceed my expectations but 'Palm Springs' is... everything.

the lighter side of life
Jake takes Amy on their first date since having Mac, and it’s really not what she expects. Born completely from that scene in the finale where Jake rides Lt. Peanut Butter.
Read it on AO3. ~~~~
“Are you going to tell us where we’re going?” Amy asks Jake, smiling amusedly.
“Nope!” he sing-songs, looking far too proud of himself. “All I can tell you is that this is different from the kind of thing we’d normally do, and you’re going to love it.”
Jake’s practically vibrating with excitement in the driver’s seat, one hand on the wheel as they continue to drive down the parkway, the other clasped over her hand in between them.
They’re going on their first date since Mac was born, and while Amy can’t be more ecstatic to finally be feeling normal enough to have some uninterrupted one-on-one leisure time with her husband, a part of her almost feels guilty to be leaving Mac alone.

you are loved more than you know
Summary: His son has only been alive for a few hours, but Jake’s never felt happiness like this.
Shoutout to the ever-wonderful @vernonfielding for the quick once-over. <3
Jake is delirious with joy.
At first, he thought he was familiar with the feeling.
It’s almost like what he felt when he married Amy. He used to be certain that the kind of happiness he experienced that day simply couldn’t be replicated, that nothing could ever match it.
Since then, he’d come to realize he was wrong, because the same happiness he felt that day is matched every single moment he’s with her. When she blinks awake beside him in the morning, eyelids still droopy with sleep, when she tiptoes to kiss him when she’s not wearing her heels, when she curls herself around him at night without prompting when he’s had a bad day. Every second he spends with her is laced with delight and adoration,
He thinks that all of that love has come together, coalescing into something, someone, so brilliant and wonderful that he’ll never be able to describe him with words, not even with the help from every dictionary and thesaurus that Amy owns.

Some writing questions meme
I think there was an actual title to this meme but I can’t remember what it was. Thank you to @exploding-snapple for tagging me! I have had zero time for anything other than work lately and I hate that I’ve had to stop writing fic. I was feeling so inspired!
1. What’s your favorite genre to write?
Hurt/comfort for sure. Obviously missing scene fics. And I love doing big plotty fics. But I will write just about any genre, really.
2. Do you pull inspiration from real life, or do you pull things from other books/fanfiction you’ve read?
All of the above. I get the most inspiration from just plain canon -- imagining how the characters would behave in various situations, that kind of thing. But I definitely grab stuff from real life and fiction too.
3. Do you tend to write one-shots, short stories, or longer things?
All of the above again. I like to mix it up! In B99 I’ve only got the one long multi-chap (so far), but assuming work ever stops being crazy, I definitely have a few longer stories I’d love to tackle.
4. Do you prefer to write description or dialogue?
Definitely dialogue over descriptions. Or I guess I find dialogue easier, anyway. When the plot is moving along I find that writing pretty fun too, but I don’t love, like, scene-setting descriptions, or describing characters. It just comes least naturally to me.
5. Favorite fic/book of all time?
That is way too hard to answer! Books: The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay, The Secret Garden, Harry Potter, The Great Believers, The Thief, lots of others. Fanfic, I wouldn’t even know where to begin. There are a few amazing  fics, mostly hurt/comfort, in non-B99 fandoms that are sort of my go-to happy reads. (I’m happy to share links if anyone’s ever interested, but my fandom tastes are kind of all over the place.)
6. Favorite Trope?
For hurt/comfort, I love characters who are injured and MUST GO ON. I also love stories where characters are underestimated and prove everyone wrong in the end. The problem with both those tropes, for me, is that they often aren’t written exactly the way I want them. I can be very picky! For romance I definitely like a slow burn, and I like Missed Opportunities That Turn Out In The End, but they have to feel real, not contrived. (I LOVED the Teddy and Sophia plotlines in canon, for example.)
7. Are you the kind of person to work on more than one WIP?
Nope! I am very one-track. Every now and then I might spin out a one-off while I’m working on a longer story, but I never have multiple WIPs going.
8. How long have you been writing?
Oh god, a very very long time. I think I posted my first fic in 2002? (I was very young!) And I was writing fanfic even before then, just short things in notebooks that I would read over and over.
9. Do you tend to write more in the morning, afternoon, or evening?
Definitely at night. If I’m super into a story I will go to a coffee shop on weekends and write all afternoon. (Remember when we could go to coffee shops? Sigh.) But otherwise I’m very much a night-writer.
10. Do you prefer to post and update your WIP chapter by chapter or wait until it’s 100% complete before sharing it?
I always wait until it’s 100% done. It’s not even about making sure I finish the story (I pretty much always finish everything I start), I just don’t understand how people can post works in progress. I am constantly tinkering with my stories as I go, and I’ll often realize while I’m writing like, Chapter 10 that I forgot to drop some hint in Chapter 2 that’s key to the plot. Or I’ll think of some cool character development that happens at the end and realize I need to build up to it in the middle. Plus I’m big on edits and doing at least one major revise of an entire fic after I have a first draft. Posting as I write would stress me out so much.
I think my dear @fezzle was already tagged to do this, but I’m tagging her again!

Last line
Rules: Share the last line you wrote for a WIP.
I was tagged by @fezzle and @exploding-snapple -- thank you both! Yeesh, tumblr, I am exhausted. After a very long run of fic-writing it’s been like, a decade in corona-years since I wrote any fic. BUT. I happen to have my WIP from last NaNoWriMo, and that totally counts, yes?
So this is kind of a cheat because it’s not a last line so much as a last dialogue exchange, I guess. Also, I’m not really sure it’s the last thing I wrote, but close enough (it’s actually from the second chapter(ish)).
They were at the bathroom, and they paused and faced each other.
“Go on,” Amy said, breaking the silence and waving him inside. “I’ll wait.”
“You don’t have- ah,” Jake said, interrupting himself when he caught on. “You don’t trust me. I assume you’ve removed all the razors? Wouldn’t want me shaving you to death.”
He grinned at her in what he probably thought was a charming way. Amy stared back impassively. “Just remember who’s carrying the gun.”
The grin slid off his face, and Amy enjoyed it.
The story is called “World’s got me dizzy again” and sadly, it will probably never see AO3.  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ But hey, maybe I’m wrong!

But ending up where I started again makes me wanna stand still (b99 fanfic)
Rating: G
Pairing: Jake Peralta/Amy Santiago
Summary: In which Amy takes care of an injured Jake, and reflects on trepidation about the future. In other words, a whole lotta hurt/comfort and emotional introspection. Post s07e04 The Jimmy Jab Games II.
For @vernonfielding, who immediately messaged me after the episode and said “please tell me you’re planning on writing some h/c.”
Thanks to @exploding-snapple for the beta.
Read on ao3.
~
Jake is still wildly celebrating his win when Amy drops the used autoinjector on her desk and runs over to join him. Sure, it’s not the responsible thing to do, but the Jimmy Jab Games have put her in the mindset of an earlier time and Amy has been possessed with the urge to throw out any sense of caution or maturity.
“I’m sorry I stabbed you with an EpiPen,” she whispers in Jake’s ear as she joins him in an embrace.
“Ames, are you kidding?” Jake grabs her shoulders and pulls her away so he can look her in the eye.
“That was the coolest thing to ever happen to me. Did you see me break through that door like a total badass? Please tell me you got a picture.” Amy meets his eyes and, despite the beating he has taken today, his eyes are deep brown and warm.
“I didn’t get a picture, but it was pretty cool. Seriously though, are you okay?” Amy crinkles her eyebrows and takes in Jake’s disheveled appearance—his curls sticking up to one side and the drywall dust sprinkled all over his navy shirt.

11, 14, 19, 20 for the fic asks?
11. Kid fic or childhood friends?
Kid fic if you mean like, pre-canon focus (kid fics where the character is magically aged down are REALLY hard to pull off), otherwise childhood friends because who DOESN’T love that level of commitment and personal history??
14. (For authors) Post a line of dialogue from one of your WIPs without context.
“I don’t miss him,” she says, eyes bright and staring off into the starless sky. “I just… miss.”
19. What’s your favorite character headcanon?
I have to pick one??? Uh… woof. One of my oldest, I think, is that MCU!Steve Rogers holds/at least wanted to pursue an art degree (hence my Brooklyn & Queens fic).
20. Do you have a favorite fanfic or author? If so, tag them/post a link and share the love!
So many. philthestone and @vernonfielding for Brooklyn 99, @seek-rest for Peter Parker, @beguilewritesstuff for gen Daredevil, @laporcupina and @thegraytigress for gen Steve, and @obaewankenope for Newt Scamander, to name a few.

Tell me about one positive thing that happened this week?💜
What a nice ask! This week has been awful so I’m very glad to think of something nice, and I have an easy one: On Wednesday my bosses forced me to take an afternoon off and I spent several hours with my 1-year-old nephew, who is just so much fun. He’s not a very cuddly baby but he’s in this very sweet phase now where he likes to crawl right up your body and press his head into your neck and just collapse there awhile. Kills me.
(Another positive thing that happened was I got an awesome email from my goddaughter in which she said she was proud of me and I cried so hard, in the best way lol. Kids, man.)
Thank you for the ask! That really brightened my day.

Newsomberg Fact #126: Social distancing is necessary right now but that doesn't stop it from sucking.
That said, if anyone knows how to make the best of a bad situation, it's Andy and Joanna. In a bid to maintain their no television policy for Little Lady Newsomberg (and to shield her from world events) they've arrived at some very creative strategies for keeping her entertained.
From treasure hunts around the grounds of Moorcrest, to piano lessons with Mama, to the Andy-designed 'Indoor Olympics' (think the 'Jimmy Jab Games' for toddlers), they're doing an amazing job of maintaining family life.
So, as Andy has taken to reminding his Ladies, being on lockdown may suck but...

I'm very confused by Andy Samberg
All signs point to him being a truly wonderful person and yet he continues to shamelessly ruin lives by looking this hot in every episode of s7...

paper cut stings from our paper-thin plans
Rosa Diaz has never been dumped before. She thought she would be better at it.
(Or, Rosa’s first twenty-four hours post being dumped are a bit of a rollercoaster.) Set pre 7x04.
read on ao3
Rosa’s never been dumped before. She thought she would be better at it.
Rosa knows how to break up with people. She doesn’t start unnecessary drama. She’s not overly emotional. Ever since her relationship with Marcus, she actually lets her exes talk about their emotions. She’s never been dumped, but she’s seen firsthand how people act when they are and knows she’d never make the same mistakes. She would have seen it coming - she wouldn’t be caught off guard, like Marcus. She wouldn’t be crying, like Adrian. She wouldn’t have kept asking what she did wrong, like Kaitlin, who she dated for a short bit before she came out. She wouldn’t be insisting they try again, try just a little bit longer, like Alicia.
Then Jocelyn breaks up with her and Rosa does all of the above.
It would be ironic if it wasn’t quite so painful.

That thing they do
I wasn’t planning to write Jake/Amy pegging-fic and then my fingers slipped on my keyboard and here we are.
This story is very NSFW, friends. Indeed, I am only posting it on AO3 so you’ll have to follow the link to read. Thanks, as ever, to the incredible @fezzle for the beta. To the story!
There’s this thing they do, sometimes.
