Enemies to lovers "who did this to you?" about scars? Great, of course. However, I raise you this: "I did this to you."

Every single fic update there is an author trying frantically to find the right balance between a nonchalant aside of "leave a comment if you enjoyed =)" and clinging desperately to the coat tails of a random stranger, dragging along behind them on the street wailing "Please, please! I have to know what you thought! I'm desperate to talk to people about this! Ask me about the alliterative repetition! Ask me about the symbolism!"

how to enjoy reading WIPs
(if you always read complete works only)
Reading along while an author is actively posting their fic can be a great experience. Much like watching a show or series that airs weekly, reading a fic that posts a new chapter every few days or twice a month etc. can be a lot of fun. Here are some ideas of things you can do to enjoy the experience, if it's new to you:
get intrigued - where is the author going with this? How are they going to roll out the plot that they described in their summary/tags? what tone are they setting in their first chapter(s) and how do you think that will carry through the story? So much is possible, and you'll get to find out!
read the author's notes - are there hints of what's to come? are they looking for suggestions? maybe you get to know the author a little bit or connect with their social media.
read the comments - You'll often see some back and forth in the comments section between readers and the author, especially if they are friends. You might also see some speculation about what's upcoming in the fic or some references to fanon or canon that might interest you.
leave a comment - this can become an enthusiasm loop where you shout your enjoyment at the author and they shout their joy at your comment back at you. It might even lead to friendship - either with the author or with other commenters. Even if the author isn't the type of person to reply, your comment will likely encourage them to keep updating the story.
subscribe - at the top of the fic, you'll find a subscribe button (if you're a logged in user). If you hit that, AO3 will send you an email every time that fic updates. You'll be able to read the fic soon after it's posted or save it as a treat or to reward yourself later.
get a friend to read it too - then you'll have someone to theorize with and squee with when a new chapter is posted. Having someone to talk to about things always makes them more fun.
if the fic goes on hiatus - you still had all the fun of reading it while it was still posting, and now you get to imagine what might happen next. You can still reread (and even comment, if you'd like) as often as you like until that new chapter drops, and if you're subscribed, you'll find out about it - even if it takes years.
Reading works in progress isn't everyone's cup of tea, but I think it can be a lot of fun - especially if you know someone else who's reading it too.
If you're someone who already reads works in progress, tell us why in the notes ❤️

Nano Day 5:
I woke up at 4 am today. Thanks time change lol.
But I did manage to get in my word count for today before 7 am so that’s great.

i’ve started to think about ao3 audience interaction as kinda comparable to doing a live reading in an intimate little bookstore, like kudos are everybody who stayed til the end and applauded, comments are everybody who waited to come up to talk to you afterwards, and bookmark comments are the little snatches of conversation you overhear outside.
this helps me feel better/less anxious about responding to comments with some form of thanks, because if someone walked up to me in person and said they liked my work right after reading it, i would compulsively say thanks. it also helps contextualize audience size in a healthy way i think, bc most of us naturally crave more attention on our fic, but if we were actually in the room with even like 20 people applauding and five people waiting after to tell us how awesome we are we’d be fuckin elated.

its so scary to put yourself out there but a SINGLE message saying "hi i loved what you made it touched me in some way" makes it all worth it 10000%

A snippet of Chapter 10:
From my fic : Parkinson by MadMaxMione
“I don’t need to get involved?” He gestured to her. “Pansy you clearly don’t need to get involved,” Theo hissed.
Pansy took a step towards him, reaching out a hand to calm him.
Theo pushed her hand away. “No. Pansy, you can’t expect me to sit here and except being left out of this clearly critical information. How can I not get involved?” He huffed. “If anyone should not be getting involved it’s fucking you. Just a few days ago I found you on the bathroom floor, drunk at 3pm and bleeding all over from cuts you made yourself,”

“What?” He asked in a low voice.
“Nothing,” Pansy shook her head and turned to go fetch her broom a few yards away.
“Did I hurt your arm?” He seemed to be searching his memory for when she could have injured it.
“No Draco,” Pansy drawled, trying to wave off his questioning. Pansy grabbed her broom and tossed it over her shoulder.
Draco was still eyeing her. He was much taller than her, it had taken Pansy some getting used to. For all of their life they had been around the same size, Draco had been a late bloomer. Even though it had been a few years since Draco had hit his growth spurt, she still in her mind saw him as her size.
She brushed past him. As she did, Draco stopped her, grabbing her by the shoulder.
“Pansy what the fuck?” He hissed. He grabbed her arm before she could pull away. And that’s when she saw it. Red. There was dark blood marking her white sleeve. She was bleeding, a lot.
