실랑이: quarrel, wrangle 서로 자신이 옳다고 주장하면서 고집을 부리고 말로 싸우는 일. The act of arguing with each other, while sticking to their own opinion.

실재하다: exist in reality 실제로 존재하다. To be existent in reality.

족히: fully, easily 모자람이 없어서 더 바라는 바가 없이. In a manner of being fully satisfactory with nothing lacking.

고군분투: unsupported effort 다른 사람의 도움을 받지 않고 혼자 또는 적은 인원으로 힘든 일을 함. Doing something difficult alone or with few coworkers.

어엿하다: respectable, decent 태도가 아주 번듯하고 당당하다. Decent and dignified in one's attitude.

묵직하다: be reliable 사람이 점잖고 믿음직하다. For a person to be decent and reliable.

설익다: be half-done 아직 제대로 이루어지거나 완성되지 못하다. For something to not be complete or finished.

음해: slandering 몸을 드러내지 않고 남에게 해를 가함. An act of doing harm to someone without appearing in person.

여건: condition, circumstances 이미 주어진 조건. A given condition.

집념: tenacious devotion, persistent dedication 한 가지 일에만 매달려 마음을 쏟음. 또는 그 마음이나 생각. The quality of being devoted to a specific task, or such a thought or attitude.

파죽지세: irresistible force, crushing power 막을 수 없을 만큼 거침없이 나아가는 기세. An unstoppable, strong force moving people or things forward, despite any obstacles.

추격: chase, running after 앞선 쪽을 잡거나 넘어서려고 공격적으로 뒤쫓아 감. An act of aggressively running after someone to catch or overtake him/her.

격식: formality 사회적 모임 등에서 수준이나 분위기에 맞는 일정한 방식. A predetermined method that is fitting for the level or atmosphere of a certain social gathering.

I love messy desks. I used to be stickler for a clean empty desk but ever since I let that go I have felt amazing. It's cathartic to clean a desk, as it is to clean any space, but I find it useless to strive for this perfectly empty desk. Being surrounded by my thoughts in physical form creates clutter, the right kind of clutter. I am reminded of things, thoughts about homework, theorems, problems keep rolling around in my head instead of being neatly packed away. I receive insights at the strangest moments and I like it. I enjoy the organic development of thoughts and ideas. Perhaps it is not the most efficient, perhaps it isn't the best, but it works for me and it works well.

이렇게 딸에게 말했지만, 솔직하게 말하자면 난 그맘때 꽤나 공부를 좋아했던 것 같다. 뭐가 됐든 정답이라는 것이 존재했고, 일련의 과정 속에서 그걸 맞히는 재미가 있었고, 그 결과 일정한 보상이 따라오지 않았던가. 설령 처음엔 틀��다 해도 그걸로 게임이 끝나는 것은 아니었으며 재도전 끝에 장벽을 뛰어넘는 것도 성취감을 주기에 충분했다. 말하자면 긍정의 피드백.

또한 굳이 보상이 아니었다 해도 이른바 답이 주어져 있는 세계가 주는 안온함이 좋았으며, 비록 내 스스로 그 경계를 정하지는 않았지만, 오히려 그것 때문에 그 고립계 속에서 내가 고민해야 할 것이 별로 없었음을 고백하지 않을 수 없다.

그런 면에서 공부가 재미 없다는, 그래서 그놈의 공부가 영 내키지 않는다는 딸들에게 그것을 강요할 명분이 없다. 나와는 달리 공부가 재미 없다잖은가. 나로부터 나왔으나 엄연히 나와는 다른 존재들에게 처음엔 어리석게도 화가 났었고, 나중에는 안타까운 마음이 들었으나, 이런 나의 생각은 길거리에서 '예수천국 불신지옥'을 외치는 누군가와 다를 바 없다. 그런 말에 내가 낚이지 않았으니 내 유전자를 절반은 가지고 나온 그들이, 하기 싫어도 공부는 해야 하는 것이라는 내 말에 낚이지 않는 것은 어쩌면 당연한 일일까. 그리하여 그들이 무탈하게 이 터널을 빠져나가는 것만으로도 충분히 감사해야 할 일로 결론을 내려야 내 맘이 편해지지 않겠나.

근데 그들은 그렇다면 무엇을 재밌어 할까. 자기들끼리만 알고 내겐 알려 주지 않는 건지, 아니면 그들 자신도 아직 모르는 건지 나로선 알 수가 없다. 알게 되면 나중에라도 내게 알려 줄까. 갑자기 자신이 없어진다.
