I want to thank Alice for this, in "sorry" it was the first time I've ever heard someone say the word "aromantic" in tv, it's something really important to me and generally to every heartstopper fan who's also part of the aro/ace community. It makes me so happy for this representation to also be made by my favorite author ever and someone who's also part of the community

The ace talk
The first reaction of the partner: they think you are afraid.
Tumblr media
They think that they aren’t attractive enough, that it’s on them.
Tumblr media
They think you never tried it (because if you did, you’ll “see the light” somehow).
Tumblr media
New assumption: the sex you had before was bad.
Tumblr media
The way it’s impossible to explain to someone that you see colors when they don’t (or that you don’t see colors when they do).
Tumblr media
...And to explain that you like the non-sexual part of the romantic relationship
Tumblr media
And then, with all the informations you gave them, they now have to choose if it could be enough for them.

Nobody here consented to the bots
the fact that the porn bots here are intentionally putting #asexual (I saw a few with it as the only tag) is awful enough, but do you think the people on there are even associated with the accounts? They probably didn’t consent to any of this either. It’s all so awful and malicious it makes me sick

I'm so tired. And Frustrated.
I'm tired of characters needing to be "in love" every time they love each other. Especially when the media goes out of the way to make it clear that they love each other without ever trying to define that as "in love". They love each other. That is just as valuable. That is Just as worthy. They can be partners without romance. They can be partners without sex.
They Can Be Partners Without Romance.
I am so Sick of not only the idea that for some god forsaken reason, Every single queer relationship needs to be labeled and categorizable to "count" as explicitly queer, but the idea that it needs to be romantic. The notion that characters and stories cannot be queer until you get to see a kiss or people are declared "boyfriends" or something else like that. We are Woefully shy of queer representation on the whole— I'm not saying you can't interpret media however you like. Do what you want.
But I am so sick of characters that Clearly mirror aromantic stories or stories about queerness that just don't focus on romance be called "not good enough" or "homophobic". Not every story is about romance. Not every partnership is romantic.
That doesn't make them not queer. That doesn't make them not important. I can promise you, those of us who don't or can't center romance in our lives? We Are living a queer experience. We are antithetical to amatonormative allonormative expectations for how life "should" be lead.
We get to see ourselves in those stories you're calling "not queer enough". Queerness is complex and weird and Fucking Queer. It's not an analog of straightness or cisness. We're not playing opposite to straightness or cisness. We're not operating in the same Framework— that's what makes us so goddamn queer. We aren't easily definable, and when we try to force ourselves to find one definitive way to be queer, we leave community behind.
So yes. We need more queer stories. We need more queer stories of all kinds that are messy and weird and romantic and aromantic and trans and ace and nonbinary and all over the place because every single story about queerness is going to be different. And that's good.

I get so emotional thinking about the kids who will grow up knowing words like aromantic and asexual...
I visited a junior school (for ages 7-11) the other day and they had a display of pride posters including one for ace! My 13 year-old neighbour identifies as aroace and has told her parents!
I get so emotional thinking about the aspec kids who will grow up knowing that those identities are an option, knowing that it's a valid way of existing in the world, knowing that it's okay if they don't ever feel (a particular kind of) attraction.

isaac crying at tara’s party hurt me in so many different ways. he’s at this party full of people who are kissing or flirting, and there’s james who’s been making him laugh and feel good but then he kisses him and it feels all kind of wrong. it doesn’t feel like what he reads in his books. it doesn’t feel like butterflies and sparks, it feels like alarms going off and moths in your stomach. and it kills him because why doesn’t it work?? what is wrong with him? why can’t he feel what he reads in his books?? why does it seem so easy for everyone else?? and so he starts to cry because it’s all hitting him. he’s been immersed in romance his whole life, and now he realizes he can’t have it. he can’t feel it. i felt all his pain, all the loss that he felt because of whatever society made him believe he was losing. i felt the romance dream slip away as he cried. but then he gets to see the lambert piece and it looks like something he can recognize himself into. he gets to talk to someone who is aromantic and asexual and who has also struggled at first, but realized that romantic love isn’t everything that makes life worth living as the world always makes it out to be. and something clicks in isaac as he hears those two words. something that finally fits. and seeing the leaves appear around him, only him, felt like happiness. it felt like hope

Found a paper talking about asexuality today, on the topic of dehumanisation, from 2012.
I wasn't on tumblr for 2012, but I did join during the years after, when people were still scared, our language was still being taken. People were still being stigmatised for their explicit support of us.
I haven't read the paper yet, it probably is somewhat outdated, it's not speaking on aromatics at all from what I can tell but it's there. It's been references over 100 times. I found it from one of these references where asexuals were mentioned as its own group. Its not even about sexuality, its just a paper I have to read for uni but it's there.
It's there.
It's a reminder that we always were there.
Even when people barely believed us there was someone writing a whole paper on our experiences, and that paper was mentioned in a paper so significant that its one of three papers my course chose to assign for this paper.
Being visible is a wonderful thing
