S2, E1: The Arrival, Pt. 1

Not a Meta, Just a tribute.

(Eldritch tendencies) Aziraphale could not give less of a shit about the rent, and doesn't appear to even realize that he should. It's waved away seemingly because as soon as he's there he is thinking about getting his records. He completely dismisses the rent with the air of someone who is keeping a record shop for the sake of not learning how to find records elsewhere? Money seems to be no object, but it also seems to hold little value. It's like he's been playing The Sims with this neighborhood and has it just how he likes it, thank you very much.

(Van Life Crowley) There's no way that Crowley has been living in his car that long. Less than a year. Not only was he in his apt seemingly during Lockdown, but Shax is delivering mail and it seems like the first time that she's telling him about the issues with the bills. 4 to 6 months seems reasonable, up to a year if it took awhile for them to establish this communication.

(Boss!Shax) She's not able to get the bills paid because her signature isn't being accepted as his replacement. . . . Why? Is she squatting in the apartment? Is this promotion through sheer force of will via takeover? Also if she can't get the bills paid does that mean the apartment is going to get the utilities shut off? Are there no lights in Crowley's flat, Shax? Was the wifi cancelled? Why isn't her signature good enough, if she's a valid replacement?

(Eternal Beings Don't Get It) Shax doesn't get why the mail service can't be forwarded to the Bentley. I enjoy the total lack of understanding that is maintained both textually and subtextually.

(Fashion) I love Shax's whole outfit. She looks fantastic.

(Existential Crisis Crowley) Confirms that Hell doesn't know Shax is checking in/seeking advice. Crowley doesn't seem adverse to talking but isn't taking it seriously either. Hell doesn't care how jobs get done. Why does any of it matter if ... they don't even care? It's all a sham. Nothing matters as long as the numbers are good and everything appears as it should. The bureaucracy is always a secret favorite part of mine.

(Boss!Shax) She really wants to do a good job. She's planning things! She's trying to get thngs done! but.... it's secretly easy and the humans basically self-punish constantly in new and ingenious ways. Feels very First Grownup Job where you realize that no one is actually a grownup and office politics are worse than you thought but the job itself is easier and it feels like a confusing look behind the curtain.

(Existential Crisis Crowley) Crowley is still on the outs, yeah, he knows. Doesn't care. But he still wants the information. Protective/Defense Crowley. I know he's called Protective a lot, but I lean toward it being much more of a hyper-vigilant defense mode. Not as worried about being attacked as he is about disrupting his small piece of existence where he finds meaning, peace, or happiness.

(Boss!Shax) (Afterlife Conspiracy) Half rations for demons? Is this Beeze being upset or more Hellish cutbacks? Why is Hell having so many issues? We know people don't become Demons when they die, they go to an afterlife, but we have very little to suggest that anyone actually ends up in Heaven. Is everyone going to Hell, possibly except a very few? Is this going to be a problem? All the musicians that Crowley lists in season one are said to be in Hell, plus all the nazis we saw, but no mention that I can recall of someone actually going to Heaven. Shax is excited to have some juicy dirt. She's so willing to play the political/office game of favors here, and in 1941, and later. Someone wants Employee of the Month.

(Best Buddies Mentioned) Shax wants him to report back if his "contact" in the bookshop mentions anything. Is she playing nice and not suggesting anything untoward? She's clearly still somewhat deferential/intimidated by Crowley (who by all accounts was considered a star employee until he wasn't, so that makes sense for our Non!GirlBoss).

(Boss!Shax) Bless. She tries too hard. There's an attempt to get Crowley to agree to trade info or to give up some in the moment. Though it's an understandable try, Crowley is not phased. He is, as per usual, thinking about ducks. This non sequitur is enough to throw her off balance.

(Future Hopes) I would really love a mini origin moment where we find out how Crowley learns about feeding peas to ducks. I would like it to be something that Aziraphale tells him, as a gesture perhaps, since Aziraphale knows Crowley loves ducks. Even so, any origin would be fun.

(Maggie/Nina) She's a skinny latte but it feels like they've never had much interaction? Is this maybe the only time she's come in when it wasn't the morning rush or something? How is she a regular and Nina knows her order, but it seems like they've never even said hello? It's not wild, just a little odd.

(Fashion) Maggie's sweater is so cute. I particularly love the embroidery on the back. Not into the rockabilly look but she wears it well.

(Jim!Gabe) (Nina The Shit Stirrer) People are straight up filming Jim!Gabe and I wonder what happened to that footage. Is public nudity legal in SoHo? If not, why isn't anyone concerned that a naked and seemingly unhinged man came out of the pub (that's where the elevator is) totally naked. Maybe there's a reasonable assumption that he lost a bet or took a dare? Maggie seems shocked and Nina seems delighted. Do the tomatoes mean anything? Just a standard fruit stand gag?

(Bookshop Omens) The Book with the story of Job is on display next to Aziraphale as he listens to his music. It is open to three dancers? Not sure. The music is Shostakovitch Symphony No. 5 in D minor, Op 47 - Allegro Non Troppo. Fast, not too fast. Are you listening, Crowley?

(Aziraphale the Comfy) The Bookshop Owner, supposed seller of books, during what is clearly working hours, is very annoyed that he has to answer his shop door. He is made very uncomfy by the visitor and seems alarmed but not embarrassed by the crowd? Like he's more worried that he's on Heaven's Candid Camera than just a horny bookseller getting a Sex Delivery (as per Nina). He stands there talking to the naked man on his doorstep for what feels like an eternity. No attempt to cover him up or even the very reasonable closing of the door and leaving. Also Jim!Gabe asks to come in. Could he enter without permission I wonder? Bless Jon Hamm for being so silly. I don't know what sort of modesty garment he was wearing but his whole ass was out and there were SO MANY people on that set.

(Maggie/Nina) First soft moment, laughing about the Stripper-deliver-o-gram, and Nina smiles, enjoying the moment, only to instantly push Maggie away when she introduces herself. (Wouldn't it be funny if I did the right thing and you did the wrong one? Hahaha... NO!) Mirror moment to Az/Crow shutting down their soft moments with harsh turns.

(Heavenly Scandal) Michael is talking to someone on the phone about Jim!Gabe. Is it Beeze? Xray doesn't indicate. She neither confirms nor denies whether Heaven is complicit in his absence. First mention of Extreme Sanctions and the Book Of Life.

(Aziraphale the Comfy) Gives Jim!Gabe some hot cocoa in his own mug. Seems unlikely that there were no other mugs. Is this THE cocoa mug? Or is it a good host sort of move? Why give Jim the mug that he clearly uses for himself and was purchased as some kind of joke or nod to his Angelic identity? Aziraphale seems upset at the idea of Jim not knowing who he is and then relieved at the thought that does, only to be tentative and confused when Az realizes that no Jim is still saying that he has no idea. He's playing carefully, neither wanting to give information or to get in trouble. A trepidatious host.

(Aziraphale the Company Man) He's only half listening. It looks like half his brain is dedicated to damage control/wondering what is happening. "Why did you come to my shop?" Thoughts nervously immediately seem to wander. He's nodding along absently until Jim!Gabe's words sink in about wanting to be near one person. Everyone knows there's at least some kind of ... loose co-worker relationship with Az and Crowley, but Az still instantly has to stomp any possible thoughts of recognizing that relationship into the ground. "No. Certainly not! I have no idea what that feels like." Buddy. Come on. Nothing louder than a guilty conscience. He's fired but he still wants to stay in line with company policy. Eating and drinking aren't against company policy it seems, just not really encouraged. Like people who microwave fish or use someone else's defacto mug in the canteen. Instantly moves away and gets defensive. Seems ruffled and flustered, very aware of the actuality of the situation IMHO. I fully believe that Aziraphale knows exactly how he feels about Crowley and is, like an asympote on a graph, constantly trying (albeit verrrrry slowly) to get as close as he can without actually making their situation a reality. He's passionately dedicated to that fine line. I don't see it as a homophobic Heaven (and that wouldn't track with GNeil's comments) but more of a divided loyalty, anti-personal relationships sort of Jedi mindset. It weakens one's resolve and dedication to The Cause if there is a worldly attachment, even if it's to an otherworldly creature. Doubly so, I imagine, since Crowley is a demon.

(Heavenly Scandal) The Something Terrible. Do we know exactly what this is? Is it the Re-Pocolypse, or is it his memory being wiped?

(Aziraphale the Comfy) Az is of course instantly trying to get more information but also treading somewhat carefully still. Both boy-shaped-creatures are very worried about protecting their peace. He's trying very much to not snap at Jim!Gabe, but also very frustrated. Is this Aziraphale more tightly wound than before? He seems more stressed. Are both the Husbands feeling very precarious about their precious niche of peace? I feel like S1 Aziraphale was more confrontational?

(Jim!Gabe) Ever an optimist. Things will be fine! Also he carried a very nearly empty box down an elevator and less than half a block. Maybe even just across the street basically? If his arms were tired, that says a lot about Gabriel's use of the Heavenly Gym facilities.

(Existential Crisis Crowley) He throws away all his junk mail. Or all his mail. What kind of mail is it? What lists is he on? Does he park on the same street always? He still gives advice to Shax though. A reluctant mentor. He's so pleased to hear that there's something wrong with Gabriel. It's kind of nice to see him get a bit of good news, considering. He immediately gets in the Bentley and drives off. Clearly already heading toward the bookshop to deliver the news.

(Good for me) I saw the fly. I didn't make any connections but I saw it and I knew it meant something.

(Aziraphale the Company Man) This makes me so sad. One of the ways that G&B bond is kind words and actions that are so clearly lacking in their respective departments. Az is tickled by Jim!Gabe saying he loves Az, but can't say it back. These words going unsaid feel like foreshadowing to refusing to speak things aloud (their precious niche) and being unable to speak things later (A group of the two of us).

(Aziraphale the Comfy) he's at war with himself a bit. He wants to throttle Jim!Gabe, but also isn't sure what is happening. Not sure why he doesn't call Heaven to clarify the issue, except that I definitely think his instinct is to protect his niche until he knows more. I don't feel like he's protecting Jim!Gabe yet, I feel like he's trying to figure out the problem and protect their little oasis. There's no softness towards Jim, just questions and fretting and finally the start of "hiding" Jim!Gabe by giving him a different name. And, naturally, calling his Good Pal Crowley.

(Jim!Gabriel) Jon Hamm. Just. Love.

(Domestic Moments) I'm convinced that Crowley drives to the Bookshop almost every day. This call is to re-route him, not to call him over. I know Crowley moans about the reasons that Az calls, but honestly. He's clearly already driving and if he's two minutes away then he is 3 miles away, assuming he is going 90 mph. Obviously they spent more time apart during lockdown, but there's way too much casual intimacy with the space of the bookshop to be only a rare visitor. Others have covered this deeply and well. Small note, Az is calling on the store phone, and while he is able to call via both dialing and just talking to the phone, it seems like the Bentley has some kind of call feature? Crowley hangs up by pressing something in the rearview mirror region. If he was speaking through the radio like others have, the switch would be on the dashboard instead.

(Pratchett) We see Jim!Gabriel through a bookcase and the shot is framed with what I assume is PTerry's hat. Also, the sound of a fly. The clues are really up front in retrospect.

(Muriel!!) She's still a Scrivener, we find out later, but she's walking the heavenly halls so she isn't by herself in that office allllll the time. She immediately notices the matchbox. How many others passed it?

WELL OKAY he was born 1928 and his parents were Austria-Hungary immigrats, hes mum was byzantine catholic and so was he for all his life he went to church almost every Sunday AND HE MEET JOHN PAUL II AND GAVE AUTOGRAPHS TO NUNS WHO WERE THERE

He started as a commercial illustrator theres a video showing technics he used for that , in the late 50s he started painting because he wanted his works to be shown in galleries and he did hes Campbell soup paintings, exhibited them in 1962 and that pretty much made him more known:DThe same year he bought a house and on the 5th floor created the factory decorated all in sliver paint and tin foil. It was relocated a few times but this one is the most famous. I belive most of his polaroids of celebrities were taken there but might be wrong lol. He was super obsessed with celebrities and fame which started when he was a kid and had to stay home for weeks after falling sick with sydenham chorea(it also made his skin and hair lose pigment for the rest of his life) and was collecting photos of celebs and writing to them

In 1968 he was shot by a radical feminist bc she didnt star in one of his films but he made it out alive, he was less social after that and became scared of hospitals. He kept making art, im his signature silk screen printing technic but belived he havent done anything good since the attack:( Also the woman who shot him ended up in a mental hospital, got out and has wrote him letters with pears.

He died basically because of his fear of hospitals he was moving his gallbladder surgery to the point when he actually did it it was very dangerous (and the fact that he was shot beafore and almost died didnt make it easier) he died because of complications after sugery but he did wake up! and made a call, then he suffocate i think

He stored things in boxes. I mean a lot of things. In a lot of boxes. They are called time capsules and im pretty sure they opened all of them, they included toe nails, old food, papers etc really ranodm thngs but his assignment whe help him to make the boxes said he knew exactly where he wanted to put what. So not random after all.

He was also openly gay beafore the gay liberation(he once submitted a series of man nudes to an exhibition but they rejected them and wanted to make a book, named cockbook. No comment needed on that), lived with his mom until he was 42, she moved in with him in NYC when he bought the house i mentioned earlier amd they had 20 cats all named Sam very important information. And he wore wigs, made in italy i think bc we went bald too quickly, he didnt style tehm and once a girl took his wig of and he wrote in his diary that we wanted to push her of balcony for that, i was surprised i was sure it was real hair lol

“They’re going to see you” You laugh as Alex presses up against your back, trapping you between him and the kitchen counter.

“I’m just getting a glass, what are you talking about?” He reaches up to snag a glass from the cabinet above your head but doesn’t back away.

“Mhm” You roll your eyes, already able to picture the little smirk he has on his face.

“Don’t pretend you don’t like it babe” The casual pet name rings in your ears, taking you back to the times he’s said it back in LA.

It was probably the biggest surprise of the year, that you started dating Alex. You definitely weren’t planning on it when you left for college. It was more a coincidence that you were only a 10 minute drive from your brothers friend and as much as you didn’t plan it, you couldn’t say you weren’t happy about it.

Alex took you out for lunch as soon as he knew you were in town. It was casual, just two friends catching up. Then after that, you continued catching up and lunch dates turned into hanging out at his apartment which then turned into making out on his couch. Really, you couldn’t explain how it all happened.

Then when it was time to come home after his season and your school year, you both decided to keep everything hush, at least until you could properly tell Jack.

“Just… not here, please?” You’d already survived a week. It wasn’t easy but you did it. A whole week of sneaking around your brothers, slipping into Alex’s room once everyone was asleep, even pretending you weren’t up for a boat day just so you could hang out with your boyfriend. It wasn’t the best scenario but it was working.

“You have to tell him babe” Alex mumbled in your ear before pushing away from you, moving to lean against the counter adjacent to you.

“I know and I will, promise”

Heres some messy thoughts that have been on my mind lately. Yeah I'm villain sympathizing still, what of it, mind your business. So, I like the ship between Hawks and Dabi, a big huge lot and I think its super interesting and fun to play with and I think part of Dabi DID "like" Hawks prior to the big betrayal, and honestly I can do a lot with it, but for me/my portrayal I think its heavily dependent on what happens to Twice.

That is to say that any AU where Twice isn't killed by Hawks is fine but the canon events surrounding and after Twice's death render the ship hard for me as like, an actual healthy thng going into the future, because Dabi can't just forgive or justify Twice's death and it would probably take a lot to just... Fix that,

I've said it once I'll say it a million times again, the League of Villains clearly care deeply for each other. They're damaged people, they don't all and necessarily show their "love" in the most obvious or "best" ways, they're all prone to acting dumb and guarded, Dabi, himself, personally is the best example of that as he seems to be the one with the who is most guarded and has a tendency to talk about how he totally doesn't care and push people anyway but its clearly not where his true feelings are.

In regard to Twice in particular, Dabi and Twice were actually shown as friends. They were usually depicted together, along with Himiko at times. In MHUI, they're depicted even as doing mundane things like watching TV together and chatting on the phone. Of the League members, Dabi seems the least irked by Twice. I mean he never insulted Twice ONCE that I know of and didn't speak to him harshly again that I know of. ( I mean maybe I'm just not remembering an instance of it but yeah, so far, I don't recall. )

Dabi has a habit of coming across a little prickly with the other members of the league - not to say he doesn't consider them all his friends and sympathize with/understand all of them or that a lot of his digs at the League members feel to come across to me as 'friendly roasts', beyond his "I don't need anyone, I'm fine on my own" persona, but Twice didn't seem to receive much of Dabi's standard prickly demeanor which comes with him by default due to his own trauma/abandonment issues, which heavily indicates that Twice was one of the LoV members closest to Dabi and they fully trusted each other.

I mean for me it makes no sense to say Dabi was only ever using Twice and didn't give a shit blah, blah, when we have canon text showing us that Dabi hauled his ass up who knows how many flights of stairs to get to Twice and try to help him. While this scene doesn't make it to the anime, this is shown in the manga and another thing to note is Dabi's thoughts during this time are not to blame Twice. His inner thoughts to himself as he's running to save Twice are literally; "This isn't your fault, Twice". ( Again this exact scene didn't make it to the anime but it is present in the Manga. )

Makes no sense he'd be thinking stuff that soothes and denies Twice's inevitable self-blame to himself if he didn't give a crap and only wanted to used Twice to his own advantage. He openly comforts Twice in the same way when he reaches him because just like Dabi thought he would, yes, there was Twice, in a pickle with Hawks, blaming himself for everything.

Like Dabi already knew Twice and his inner feelings enough to know that Twice would be blaming himself for Hawks betrayal. His first thoughts during the calamity that was befalling the PLF wasn't to do anything to help the PLF, it was only to get to his friend because he felt he must be in trouble. I mean at this point you could say that Dabi wouldn't have even known that Twice was IN danger for sure, he just knew that Twice was last seen with Hawks and Hawks HAD to be responsible for what was happening, hence it was likely Twice was in danger and he had to get to him to help in case that was true and he put all his effort into doing that.

It also doesn't make sense that Dabi would have even tried to help Twice if he didn't care and his whole goal was only to use Twice's death to further himself. Skeptics cameras were always in place. They would have captured Twice's death whether Dabi was there or not. We also have the knowing that Dabi's flames increase in heat when he feels strong emotions like sadness and anger and Dabi's fire power at the point of Twice's death was extreme, as noted by Hawks, indicating he was very much emotional.

We have the fact that Dabi literally openly tells Hawks he's fucking upset and questions furiously how could he could kill Twice like that in disbelief. And while he LATER says he doesn't care about Shiggy and League he never says he doesn't care about Twice.

I also think its interesting that Dabi's "jk idc actually!!" admission came AFTER he just showed how much he does care. It's reminiscent to me of a kid who, having expressed too much vulnerability, tries to back track and cover it up with a conflicting statement about how they're fine and they don't care.

We also have the moment when Hawks questions Dabi's "odd" expression and Dabi chooses to tell him that he can't cry because his tear-ducts were burned shut. The fact he even mentioned crying over Twice is interesting itself ( and this isn't exclusive to the dub, its present in the sub as well. ) But why is it interesting otherwise and I think is further evidence of Dabi actually caring and being as upset as he claims he was ? Because Dabi's entire demeanor during this is something we've actually seen from him before when he's deeply upset, smile included. It seems that people, particularly due to Hawks confusion, took Dabi's "deranged smile" to be displaying his ""true emotions"", in the sense that Dabi obviously couldn't have cared for Twice because "your friend is dead and you're acting angry but why would you be smiling about it if you actually are upset and you do care ?"

Which, sure, thats fair, but this isn't it because we see in Dabi's childhood when he's absolutely emotionally distraught and on the verge of a meltdown, he smiles. The scene with Endeavor before a young Dabi attacks baby Shoto, his face is covered with tears but he's initially smiling up at Endeavor all the while. The scene where he's alone and trying to train his flames so his dad will stop ignoring and rejecting him ? He's bawling his eyes out with sadness but he's also smiling. I know this seems to be meant to indicate some type of mental instability with Dabi, which is obviously also true, but its not even uncommon for real people to smile or laugh in times of extreme emotional distress/anger. Psychologists have even done studies on this.

That seems to prove that Dabi's maniacal smile during this wasn't indicating his lack of care for Twice and his declarations of anger/sadness over his assassination were actually "fake," but was actually showing he was speaking the truth about his feelings regarding it and that maybe if he still had the ability to cry he would have done so as he suggested.

And yes Dabi was quick to use Twice's death to his advantage but I don't see that working as evidence against their friendship either because you're fighting a "war" with your buddy and your buddy gets killed by the enemy despite your best efforts, what do you do other than try to make it work, try to do something that'll work to your advantage, which by extension means your friends death wasn't in vain and honors them and your shared goals in some way.

Personally I'm pretty sure thats what Dabi's thoughts were when it came to "using" Twice's death against the heroes. In his eyes, its what Twice would have wanted and moreover, there was a sense of "justice" in showing Twice's death to the world in the way it was shown because the world saw that Twice didn't die as some depraved monster committing some evil act, he died as a guy who was executed while loving and trying to protect his friends.

And tbh thats honestly more how I looked at Twice's death being added to Dabi's expose video. Dabi already had enough dirt to fuck up his father's and Hawks' image before Twice was killed ( Particularly as he was lead to believe Hawks had killed Best Jeanist. ) He didn't need to have Skeptic add the footage of Twice's death on the very last minute. But he did and I feel like it was less to exploit Twice's death as such and more to show that Twice didn't deserve to die and wasn't a monster. Its just a big bonus that this event extremely bolstered and backed up Dabi's existing point that he already took the time to record and put together about his life and the Heroes and their fakery. On top of all that while Dabi's explaining what Hawks did to the other heroes he outright calls Twice his friend. Hes done that for/to no one else.

BUT YEAH, ANYWAY, Dabi was friends with Twice and the whole killing him thing is would be insanely hard to forgive for Dabi so even though I'm super behind the ship with him and Hawks and I think it could be really good, but to make it fully work out I think it'd be best explored in AUs for me where either Hawks actually joins the league in earnest / chooses the league over the heroes or AT LEAST doesn't assassinate Twice.

Stuff leading up to / prior to Twice's death is also fine, but that will defo add an extra layer to Hawks betrayal in Dabi's eyes if events still go the canon way with Hawks killing Twice. Because yeah. Thanks for coming to my useless ted talk / scene analysis on that.

so, in the process of transferring schools, one is tasked to fill upp all their requisite subjects on their form, with number of units and the grade you had on that subject. in turn this will be checked against the college's program with equivalent number of units and grade as well.

seriously, i would recommend writing all your grades and uniits in a piece of paper every semester, gives you a look over the prsent, past, and future. also it was really humbling.

and you know? i fucking hate humility. humility is just hiding your own power level. i just realised it just now.

what's worse is the fact that it reminded me of the trope that i had in my life: that reality's gaslighting me. that it doesnt matter what things really happen to you, only its outcome

this is also why i recommend it as well: it shows you where you are in life, putting you in the place where you actually are

sure you can be laughed at by your professor after receiving a 3.0 (in a "they really didnt know you" sense) but you still have that 3.0

sure you can have a 1.00 in that subject, but that's because one of your classmates did something bad and the professor took that as a consolation

sure you can have stories of people asking you and you teaching them like it was nothing. sure you can have those stories that you worked in your professor's company being handpicked as one of the rare students in his arsenal

but you still are a transferee student, who failed the last 1 semester of their life.

and what fight do you have in mind? your grades are littered with barely passes? doesnt matter if you went to a medical break or something. what matters the most is that you failed a subject, and that's how people would see you.

...and this is why i dont like talking about programming anymore. it's just painful. sure i have stories that i made programs and projects like this and that, but if you cant answer a simple mathematical algorithm puzzle, then you do fail.

doesnt matter if this is one of your favorite things to do. doesnt matter if you spent your whole high school obsessing about it. it's not enough to land you in footing. if you suck, you suck.

not really apropos of anything recent, but

like philza obviously has a lot of caring and so on, and i’m thinking about his explanations and teachings to tommy after dream got out of prison. especially about not getting attached to objects vs people. and i say this as i actually like these characters a lot, and i like phil despite or even because of him being complicated. but here’s one of thosecomplications - like someone said that philza in some ways is less human even than techno because he “hasn’t processed an emotion once in his life” and that’s kinda true, but at the same time he is somewhat an example of good fatherliness and the value of detachment and wisdom. so anyway.

on one hand, his advice to tommy is like genuinely good, and like a kind way of talking to him about how people matter more than things and the power of friendship. - and just in general helping dig into tommy’s issues. and like tommy could use some gentle upbraiding.

but like.... the fact that he’s using the whole l’manberg doomsday event as an example of his own.... dispassion (????) and choosing people over thngs. honestly, like it really brings up more awkward questions that go against his point, like wow.

but like, philza saying.... “you hesitated (before putting tubbo’s life above reclaiming your disks), i’m dissapointed in you”

i mean, touche, but given you’re acting like your the one to give out this lesson

you didn’t even hesitate / you actually went through with it. You didn’t kill all tht many people in the doomsday war, or chase them if they fled. it was all about destroying the symbolism. and you let techno just walk in there, you encouraged him. and went with him. you let him walk right back into the one place that had sucessfully killed him once. and risked your own life. you could have left him a widow. It’s just the symbol stuff - but in the negative instead of the positive. like not two disks... but risking this shirt for 54 withers is ok?

like if someone had done something to your “pledge to techno” emerald you wouldn’t have done something?

and that isn’t necessarily a bad thing, in this narrative - in ways i might not talk about here yet because i’m running out of steam.

-you weren't originally an aahw project. while they're definitely the biggest company of sorts around there's still a few others that are like them but not exactly them hanging around nevada. you happened to be in some facility they decided to raid due to them having some possibly useful information regarding the anti-aahw . she's definitely a little less than enthused to get a call from her agents that she should come check this out but ,, when she lays her eyes on u that immediately melts away

-he's VERY very curious about you. keeps you close which is kind of nice bc it means you're treated pretty well but also it means a lot of being watched. audi just has like. a habit of unconsciously ''''''''studying'''''''' you. they're always noting little behaviors of yours down mentally and asking you little questions abut how you came to be and what abilities you hold.

-believe it or not he actually DOESN'T want you in fights. she knows you're incredibly capable but the thought of you getting too involved in a bunch of clawing and tearing again makes her get uneasy. she just prefers for you to stay by her side, with the excuse that you're a body guard of sorts for her (you aren't, she's got several other, more disposable mags that serve that role just fine.).

-HOWEVER. there is one time where he doesn't get an option in that. a few contractees and dissenters attempted a raid on the base audi was at, hoping to try and get some sort of bargaining chip to make deal with. before they can even really attempt to try and land some sort of hit on them you're already pouncing on the nearest grunt, blood already spurting and painting the walls red in mere seconds of your arrival. it honest to god shocks her into stillness, her just watching motionlessly the entire time, only really moving once to dodge some limb you'd mindlessly thrown her way after tearing it from its socket. WHILE SHE IS IMPRESSED ,,, she still scolds you a little for being reckless while trying to scrub the blood off of you with a wet rag, huffing that 'you could've gotten seriously hurt' if you were any less careful >:/

-however he does do the thng where he like. cups both sides of your face and then presses his forehead against yours. you have to lean down a lot for him to do so but still. sighs a little while brushing his thumb under your eyes and tells you to be more careful from now on.

-auditor is not immune to favoritism and it shows. someone brings it up (shakily, of course) and she just shrugs and goes 'idk what you're talking abt' while petting you who's got your head on her lap. said person promptly gets 'dismissed' after.

-hates whenever anyone tries to put some kind of muzzle on you, even if its just for the jaw dislocation thingy it still makes him go kind of '>:|' . he'll let them for like. a day at MOST (unless you keep trying to get it off, then chances are he's just gonna take it off for you. nobody really bothers asking / trying to get it back on you bc he just sends them a sharp little glare before they even can. if you REALLY need it that bad then he might try and convince you to keep it on a little longer or otherwise take your mind of it, he still feels really bad about it tho . )

-you two knew each other before he dissented / you became a mag. worked pretty close together and were just close in general !! you didn't know dei super super well since he worked in a different area but you two met a few times and hit it off pretty well.

-anyway ! he doesn't take your magnification well. at all. the first few times he saw you after it were the worst, mostly because those few times were primarily because you were lashing out at agents for one reason or another (mostly maltreatment from guards / people being shitty in general) . for the first while its so obvious that you're just exhausted from what's happened to your body that was NOT meant to become this, that you're tired and on edge from not being allowed any real rest. it makes him feel fucking terrible to see how awful of a state you're in and know that there's next to nothing he can really do to help.

-it especially hits him when he notices the other little changes. there's some specific moment where he's holding onto you far too tightly, clutching at the back of your jacket while he does his best to keep composed. you always had this habit of giving a half jokey hum of some stupid little joke or even just a 'what's wrong, big guy?' whenever he seemed off or tense, he can't help but make note of the lack of real response from you in the moment other than you wrapping your arms around him as well. another time, maybe he tries to make some little inside joke after something reminded him of it, looking back at you with a little smile. it hits him with a special punch to the gut when he notices your confusion, you just can't recognize it. you don't remember it anymore. you don't remember a lot of your old self or interactions anymore.

-you two end up getting split up at one point or another. orginally, he'd planned to run away with you and deimos buut,,, one way or another, you weren't really able to get out. he goes looking for you a bunch but eventually he has to stop when it gets to be too much and he can't find any real sign of you, he's quiet for a long time after it.

-HOWEVER . he does eventually find you in some abandoned warehouse him and the others had planned to look for supplies in. the entire time he's in there he keeps hearing sounds he thinks are just dei or hank but every time he asks or comments on it they just give him a look of confusion or a little 'what are you talking about?' it puts him really on edge, it's worse when he's in one of the further corners, digging through a few boxes and desperately trying to ignore how much it feels like someones there. anyway umm lol its just you ,,,, ehe . it takes him a solid minute to process that its you but as soon as it clicks he's yelling your name and running up to hug you. doesn't even stop to think that you could totally tear him a new one right then and there he's just too happy to see you. dei and hank both come rushing over after hearing him, dei recognizes you too and is just kinda 'oh hey !! friend !! :D' while hank stands there and just kinda stares.

-is able to take you back to base without too much argument from the others. he does his best to fill you in on everything that's happened in hopes you'll explained what happened on your part too. even if you don't he can't be too upset since he's just too gd happy to see you again ,,,, chances are you stick around him a lot . deimos is nice but u don't remember him super well and hank makes you uneasy lmao . its ok he thinks its funny though, just laughs a little whenever you stand in his doorway in silence until he notices you :)

I know you're not one for discussing power scaling that much, but what is your opinion on how reddit (general) constantly lowballs Genos, then consider weaker feats of other characters better than his own feats of strength? It just seems almost.... weird to me? It's like people hold a grudge against Genos for, existing, I guess? And when did this trend even start?

It's a long answer that is grounded in psychology. While the character himself is fictional and it's by no means a serious situation, nevertheless I've found the way people respond a surprisingly real-life object lesson.

As for the whole powerscaling thing that's become awfully popular, that's a purely fictional construct and is just froth. It's irritating as this is a story designed to frustrate attempts to make like-for-like comparisons and which tries to capture some of the complexity of actual conflict, but folk will have their fun. I think nothing of it. I think it's driven mostly by YouTubers who need to have something to engage their OPM viewers about day after day to stay monetised -- it's hard work. More power to them.

1. Anchoring Bias. One of the headaches of teaching people is that we don't actually learn that well from evidence. We need to check with our pre-existing impressions and beliefs before we'll accept it. All human beings do it, it gives us some degree of stability in our understanding of the world, but it easily goes too far. I don't know if you've ever watched Mythbusters, but in revisiting the episode of the lead balloon, Adam Savage said something I found extremely relevant: he said that there was no inertia in [Jamie's] ability to change his mind, praising the latter's quickness to change his mind in response to new information. [link to the whole segment]

As a group, Redditors have a very strong anchoring bias, a very high mental inertia if you will. You can see it in the way they get upset whenever something in the manga does not correspond to the webcomic, or doesn't happen in the way they thought it would. Oy vey. Characters too, impressions are anchored early and are very slow to shift. It's anchored in minds that Genos is a loser, and certainly when he started out he was pretty damn bad at what he did. Other characters are anchored as winners and their actions are read much more lightly. If mental gymnastics need to be taken to make new information 'fit' that anchor, they will be done. Like if Metal Bat were seen the same way that Genos is, the time he broke free of the chains Erimin and Destro had bound him in, you would have seen posts questioning the toughness of the chains and the quality of the binding. You know, 'just asking', the sort of thing that seems superficially critical in isolation... until you realise it's not asked of others.

2. Key Opinion Leaders. There may be half a million subscribers on Reddit, but functionally, there's only about 50 members who have a loud enough voice to sway the sub one way or the other. They're the Key Opinion Leaders. It's the case for *all* human groupings. Even scientific and medical fields have their KOLs and if you want something to be accepted, you need only persuade them and the rest fall largely in line.

3. The Halo Effect. A basic problem of human psychology is that if we have a positive impression of a person, we'll think everything they do is that bit better. And vice versa.

A character with a great halo is Bang. Who doesn't like a cool old dude with martial arts moves? And he's an awesome and likeable character. The positive light in which he's seen is all but independent of what can actually be observed about him, which is much less rosy. The fact that in a field where disciples are generally loyal and ex-masters are held in esteem for decades, he has few with any loyalty to him? He may be strong but so far, every time he's intervened to help Genos out of a situation the latter can't cope with, he hasn't so much gotten him out of the situation as joined him in the crap. You won't catch anyone calling him a jobber though (no hero should be called a jobber for the record).

If the halo changes, it's shocking how quickly a character's actions will be interpreted differently. Popular opinion was that Sweet Mask could do no right even if his critical stance on hero work being done right and seen to be done right was spot on. And now that he's a more sympathetic character, nothing he does can be wrong, even though he *is* a raging asshole at times, like a lot of the time. Both are bad takes.

The halo effect works against Genos. The whys don't matter, it's the fact of its existence that does. It means that no matter how well he is doing, his actions are always going to be seen more negatively than if other characters did the same thng. It's funny that since your post landed in my in box, we've had a manga chapter in which it's finally occurred to many that Genos is actually heroic. How long that will last and what effect if any it'll have in modulating folks' opinions of him we will just have to see.

Like I said, this is a fictional character and no harm is being done. It's just a fascinating object lesson in how you can have severe bias against someone without any explicit bigotry. Also the truth of 'give a dog a bad name and hang him.' It's also a salutatory reminder of why English (or other language of instruction) literature is such a valuable class. Because it encourages you to read and think about texts critically for both explicit and implicit meaning and once you learn to spot the patterns, you can see it better IRL.
