Favorite 2023 First-Year Watches 🎬

...and yet another year has come to an end. this year has been very fruitful to me as a cinephile; i've discovered so many new movies and shorts that i watched more than the previous two years combined! naturally, i'm pretty excited to share some of my thoughts on these films down below - so if you can bear with me, let's go!

Eros + Massacre / エロス＋虐殺

1969 // dir. Yoshishige Yoshida // 🇯🇵

you've read the title. it's about eros... and massacre. well, to be more specific, it's a biopic/essay film on the life and leanings of Sakae Okugi, an infamous Japanese anarchist who was executed in the 1920s - intertwined with a storytelling device about political students who wish to emulate and explore his teachings. it's complex in a way that it successfully combined these two unrelated concepts into a singular, powerful work that is radicalized down to the core. once you've studied this film all the way through, you'll realize it's no mistake that this is one of the Nūberu bāgu's most defining works.

The Suspended Step of the Stork / Το Mετέωρο Bήμα Tου Πελαργού

1991 // dir. Theo Angelopoulos // 🇬🇷

just how many borders should we cross until we get home? until we get a sense of how we should function in society? until we get a sense of how it's like to gain control and be ourselves? like a stork waiting to step into other borders, our doubts and misgivings have prevented us to cross a border, as the more we cross the more it seems more far away from our true selves. we shall not receive answers from this film, rather it magically hangs above us like a cloud to ponder on the possibilities of our future, no matter how hard it'll be. (the 10 minute silent wedding scene? one of the best sequences in the history of cinema.)

The Hourglass Sanatorium / Sanatorium pod klepsydrą

1973 // dir. Wojciech Has // 🇵🇱

time is an illusion. memoria is a curse. when we immerse and indulge ourselves in just a bit of these memories, there's a chance we won't find our way back. instead, these past memories might as well materialize and force us to reckon with everything that shaped ourselves to this day. this film is exactly a two-hour surreal experience of such, and it never stops to rest or slow down.

Damnation / Kárhozat

1987 // dir. Béla Tarr // 🇭🇺

pain, suffering, and regret are already too familiar in our lives. yet despite that, we continue to live our lives as it is; depending on the circumstances, we lead our lives in different ways, and these feelings of loneliness are amplified when we have lost too much, this film dwells us in such a mood everything almost seems too hopeless to move on. it's also perhaps the definitive entry in Tarr's filmography, blending in his sense of social realism from his previous oeuvres with his brand of ink-black bleakness and pessimism that won many hearts over.

The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant / Die Bitteren Tränen Der Petra Von Kant

1972 // dir. Rainer Werner Fassbinder // 🇩🇪

it takes a little bit of push to realize ourselves that we don't have control of everything in this world, yet that's still okay. after all, we're humans, and we can be afford to be a little possessive and narcissistic sometimes. Petra Von Kant is also a narcissist and might be hard to root for some people, yet we still feel for her and understand her motivations - there's no denying that there's a little bit of Petra inside ourselves that we can't help but relate to. she's such a complete character, brought to life by Margit Cartensen and Fassbinder in an intoxicating way.

Dreams / 夢

1990 // dir. Akira Kurosawa // 🇯🇵

nature, humanity, the supernatural, art, culture, life, and death. these are the recurring themes of akira kurosawa's dreams that are depicted in this film. more or less you could say that sometimes dreams subconsciously draw you a picture of how you feel and think about life and they don't have to make the slightest sense, but to dream (and visualize) as beautifully as kurosawa did is such a tremendous gift by itself.

No Bears / خرس نیست

2022 // dir. Jafar Panahi // 🇮🇷

Iranian films are pretty well-known for their self-reflexities and meta approach to filmmaking, blending in elements of reality and fiction to the point where they all seem so seamless. this film is no exception, and it functions as an exploration of the interactions between conservative, rigid local customs and the more egalitarian urban culture, and a fiery statement in that. it leaves you nasty and sick to the stomach, witnessing inevitable disasters caused by a sturdy political cause from the director.

We Made a Beautiful Bouquet / 花束みたいな恋をした

2021 // dir. Nobuhiro Doi // 🇯🇵

love isn't made to last, especially in a scenario where worldly possessions are a necessity. the desire to build profound interpersonal intimacies is slowly eroded by capitalism, for the purpose of building a better future. ironically, this can be an ending spell for idealistic couples, with differing views of what's right and just for the benefit of them both. sure, it's cliched, but it hits all the right notes and is also a cautionary tale of how the capitalist system reduces our empathetic and creative capacities.

True Stories

1986 // dir. David Byrne // 🇺🇸

Byrne's artistic tendencies, visualized. this film is presented as a slanted, satirical portrait of American suburbian life as well as capitalism itself, but Byrne injects so much empathy, whimsiness and energy into the craft, you can't help but feel joy and smile all the way through as you go along with the buildings and characters. bravo autism!

Mr. Thank You / 有りがたうさん

1936 // dir. Hiroshi Shimizu // 🇯🇵

simple joys and harsh truths are meshed together in this breezy road trip. despite some judgments and the overwhelmingly ugly fates that might await Japanese residents, especially women, at that time, Shimizu portrays the subject matters with delicate empathy while simultaneously preventing it from becoming too saccharine or trite. it also functions as a therapeutic journey throughout rural Japan in the 30s, way before the war and rapid industrialization.

but that's not it! there are still a lot more films that stuck with me throughour 2023, and it's a shame that i'm not able to include them all in this list. however, those really special ones that I feel deserve a special mention in here are:

Favourite first-watches of 2023 🎬

I have seen 187 movies this year according to Letterboxd. 2023 was a hell of a year, even with my real life routines keeping me away from movies, I've managed to have one hell of an odyssey in cinema by attending film festivals.

2023 was certainly the year I made contact with 'wider cinema' ---- with that being said, here are the movies that captured me the most for each month, also doubling as movie recommendations from yours truly!

In stats:

3:9 ratio of English-language films and World Cinema

Japan being the country that appears the most in this list, followed by France, Indonesia, and the USA

Three black-and-white movies in this list. One movie from the 1950s with two movies from 2023 --- featuring colour and black-and-white scenes.

4 movies about true events (Argentina 1985, Goodfellas, Z, Oppenheimer).

Koji Yakusho leading two movies in this list (Cure, Perfect Days).

Honorable Mentions

2023 was a great year for new releases (not so much for the industry itself!), and there's a lot of new releases of 2023 that blew my mind and touched my heart. Here are some of the best releases of 2023 for me <3

⇢Who would you be best friends with in the marauders and stranger things universe?

What a great question! I feel like Sirius and I are basically the same person (the trauma too), and that makes me think the other marauders would like me too. I think my personality is very versatile and I could get along with more introverted people like Reggie (who my best friend of a literal decade kins). As for ST, Robin is the absolute love of my life! And I actually think we'd kick it off, with Steve and Eddie too (went through that Munson era and when S5 comes out I'll fall right back in)

⇢Who do you think you'd not get along at all with?

Girl when I tell you Lily Evans would absolutely hate my guts 😭 WORST THING IS I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHY! I feel like we just don't match at all, very much contrast, a very 'you love it or you hate it' situation. Pandora too and ugh that hurts. I feel like I'm too loud and too much for her lovely, calm personality! But that's okay. For ST... I don't like kids. IM SORRY I JUST DON'T LIKE THEM! And that specific age El, Mike, Will, Dustin and Lucas are in just infuriates me. So yeah. Maybe only Will would like me and I would like him back just enough to be friends.

In September I posted about it being Stanley Kubrick Filmography Marathon time again, whenever I got around to them...well, I eventually got around to them all & my order of least to most favorite of his 13 films has changed some again: 13) Fear and Desire [first film, hadn't hit his stride yet, but still had recognizable qualities] 12)Lolita [still a weird & uncomfortable film, well made & all, but not particularly enjoyable for me] 11) Eyes Wide Shut [his last film was again, well made & certainly visually impressive, but also not particularly enjoyable for me to watch] 10) Killer's Kiss [his 2nd film, still a bit rough, but definitely establishing visual style & other signs of genius to come] 9) Spartacus [it's well made, but probably the film with the most outside interference] 8) Barry Lyndon [a visual masterpiece, crafted with a masterful hand, possible drawback being, it's a bit of a miserable story] 7) A Clockwork Orange [a very unique, shocking, well crafted, futuristic for-its-time, film on violence, among other things] 6) Full Metal Jacket [one of multiple anti-war war films, & like A Clockwork Orange, one of his more visceral films] 5) Paths of Glory [his best anti-war war film, depending how one classifies, and the better of the two films with Kirk Douglas, and a masterpiece of its genre] 4) The Killing [only his 3rd film, already a masterpiece of the noir genre, it's continued to grow on me] 3) 2001: A Space Odyssey [yeah, that's right it's not my favorite or even 2nd, so what, it's still an undeniable masterpiece] 2) Dr. Strangelove [another masterpiece, the black comedy of black comedies, I love this film] & number 1) The Shining [this is still my favorite. HI CASIO !

2022: i can't even lie, it's top gun maverick. eeaao was amazing, and it's so close, but top gun maverick was such a fantastic experience in the cinema and such a surprise and it's honestly one of the only movies i never ever get the urge to skip a little to the good parts - because they're all good parts

2017 was such a good year for movies what!!! like blade runner 2049 and dunkirk were gorgeous, and jumanji was absolutely hilarious and jack black carried that movie - his performance still lives with me, and i still believe he should have at least gotten an oscar nom for bethany 😒. also it was pretty amazing too, not very scary and i cried because of georgie and bill, so to me it was perfect as a horror. BUT i think the absolute best was COCO, a beautiful and sad movie and i hold it very dear. the way it handles grief and loss and love and memory is so <3 i just love it

🌀How do you pronounce your own Tumblr handle in your head? My username is a combination of the "what are those???" "They are my crocs" meme and Gordon Ramsay yelling at some poor wannabe chef and calling him a donut. So I imagine the crocs meme in a really angry Gordon Ramsay voice

🪟When you look out the window right now what do you see? The apartment complex beside mine. I wish I could see some trees though. Trees fuck

💼What is the most unusual profession someone in your family was in? I can't think of one that really stands out. Almost everyone in my family practices an "unusual" profession, but not like mind-boggling unusual, you know. My mother is a counselor for the ministry of immigration, specializing in securing EU programs and funding for the immigrants. My dad is responsible for the security of my country's equivalent of the Pentagon, I think it is the ministry of external affairs? My grandfather was the captain of various cargo ships and travelled the entirety of the world like 3-4 times, which for me is the coolest profession on the list. My other grandfather was a helicopter pilot and a meteorologist for the Air Force.

🎨What hobby were you really into as a kid? I was really into speedcubing. Then I continued to learn how to solve new cubes till I was about 16. I wasn't ever freakishly good at it but I was decent. 🎬What's the last movie you watched? The Iron Claw. Holy fuck you cannot understand how much of a masterpiece this film was. It baffles me how it did not get a single Oscar nomination. Visually it was a masterpiece. I don't cry easily, but this movie had me slobbering like a 7 year old. Those few final scenes and the reference on ancient Greek mythology fucking broke me. 10/10 please watch this immediately or I will explode.

🎥What's your favorite movie genre? Whatever Tarantino makes (ik that as a person he sucks but his movies are FIRE) and the entire genre of "obsessed artist"(see Whiplash, I, Tonya, Black Swan and such)

🍿What movie would you recommend? I could go on forever but I'm going to try and be brief. All of the aforementioned films + Pour Things (an ode to absurdism), Babylon (truly an underrated gem), Eteros Ego (the best film of modern Greek cinema, an amazingly well put thriller and can be found on YouTube with English subs).
