Spencer has always taken care of reader. Whether it was giving reader food before they realized they were hungry or buying them coffee, ... Tiny gestures that made it impossible for reader not to fall in love with him.

There's A 100% Chance I'm Gonna Marry You
The team doesn’t even know of her existence but when Spencer can’t get a hold of her, he gets worried. Now he has no other choice than to tell his coworker about her.
I Think He Knows
JJ invites her best friend, a linguistics professor, to help out on a couple of cases. When she and Spencer work together, something sparks between them.
Maybe We'll Take Some Time
Spencer and Reader broke up five weeks ago. When he comes knocking on her door, crying about a friend's death, their love is resparked.
HANDS
Spencer's hands are lovely and as he placed them on Reader's cheeks, it was the only way to calm her down. So, when Reader comes home breaking down after a difficult day at work, he's quick to calm her down.
The Stranger

New AU, Again
I couldn’t help myself. I wanted to start the Brooklyn Nine Nine AU.
~~~~~~
Setting is still the same - ninety-ninth precinct in Brooklyn, New York, story starts around 2012, with the group awaiting the arrival of a new captain.
Dolores Estrada, Sergeant
Aaron Thomas, Detective
Osvaldo Ortiz, Detective
Rendon Hansen, Detective
Luisa Rojas, Detective
Camilo Serrano, Detective
Isabela Velez, Detective
Mirabel Rojas, Precinct Secretary/Assistant
Feel free to ask questions (to me or the characters) or send headcanons for me to rate, just be sure to specify in the ask!
Nothing is really a spoiler here - so whatever you ask, you will definitely get a full answer.
*To note, the family relationships are changed - there’s no way an entire family all become detectives and ended up in the same precinct. It also got confusing with the names. Luisa and Mirabel are still sisters; Dolores and Camilo are family friends; Isabela and Dolores are friends from the academy.
**Osvaldo Ortiz and Rendon Hansen are based off the townspeople, Señor Osvaldo Ortiz and Señor Rendon respectively. Aaron Thomas is just a random friend OC for Camilo.
❝ Nicky was used to not being “normal”. He’d been diagnosed as autistic at the tender age of eleven, and from that point on had been the subject of many hateful looks and uncreative taunts from his neurotypical classmates, who apparently thought that having an autistic person among them was the worst kind of injustice. Nicky had then been disowned and thrown out of the house at the age of seventeen by his fervently religious parents, who apparently could accept an autistic son but not a gay one, and had been forced to rely on the kindness of his friends’ families for a place to stay until he had graduated high school and won a university scholarship that allowed him to stay in a dorm on campus.
Years after graduating from university and the police academy and finally becoming a detective like he’d always dreamed, Nicky was transferred to Brooklyn’s ninety-ninth precinct, where he expected to once again be treated like a strange outsider by his “normal” co-workers. But to his utter surprise, Nicky quickly found himself one of the only sensible people in his new workplace, at least compared to Jake Peralta’s chaotic antics, his captain’s general incompetence, and... literally everything that went on with Hitchcock and Scully.
But now the Nine-Nine has a new captain, a much more serious one who promises to finally knock some sense into this madhouse of a precinct. However, Jake continues to resist Holt’s attempts at forcing him to act responsibly, Rosa continues to be a stoic lover of weapons and violence, and Nicky? He continues to be an awkward mess of bad jokes and fidget toys who has a hopeless crush on his most chaotic co-worker.
Maybe Nicky’s life, and Nicky himself, will never be “normal”. But, maybe, that’s not as bad a thing as he’s always lead himself to believe. ❞
Weekly Recap | June 27th-July 17th 2022
Tumblr media
Heeeyyyyyyyy, I’m back! 😃
Tumblr media
In the past three weeks I had 1) another super busy week at work 2) I caught COVID, 3) I watched all of Heartstopper and Sex Education, and 4) went on a well-deserved vacation!  😆 but I’m back now and things should slow down at work, so the recaps should actually be weekly in the future 😛 (as you can see I’ve been in a re-reading mood haha)
Complete
💙 put out this fire (burning in my soul) by liloau/ @alpineandbucky, thatsmysecret/ @thatsmysecretduh (Modern AU, childhood friends | 19K | Explicit): Life for Steve Rogers is looking up. He’s in Brooklyn where he belongs, and has risen through the ranks to become a Fire Captain for the N.Y.F.D. Between his job and his found family, the only thing missing is someone to share this life that he’s built with.When Steve’s sent up the ladder on his first call as Fire Captain to retrieve a cat, aptly named Alpine, he gets more than he bargained for. Relying on him for a rescue is none other than Bucky Barnes, his childhood best friend and the defining crush of his teenage years.Once his feet are planted firmly on the ground, Steve realizes the embers of his crush from fifteen years ago are still smoldering. Will he be able to fan the old flame, or will it end up being just another fire for him to put out?
💙 Admit It by fandomfluffandfuck/ @fandomfluffandfuck (Evanstan AU, Haley/Sebastian, BDSM | 18K | Explicit): Chris has Hayley over at his home in Boston when he lets it slip that he may or may not not be unsatisfied with his sex life and she, bless her kinky heart, has a plan on how to fix that. Said plan may or may not include having Chris accompany her to a certain type of club that Chris never imagined in a million years he'd end up in. And beyond that he never imagined he'd meet anyone in one of those clubs that he's interested in starting something with. Not that he even knows what he wants to start. (Part 1 of 💙For Beginners)
💙 Accept It by fandomfluffandfuck/ @fandomfluffandfuck (Evanstan AU, BDSM | 10K | Explicit): Chris returns to his house alone after following through with his agreed plans to go to a certain kind of, uhh, club with Hayley. His head is noisy in a way that's not- Not exactly bothersome but also isn't something that he wants to parade around anyway. He's just... he's got a lot of things in his head that needs to be sorted out. Preferably sooner rather than later because he's feeling a little, maybe, obsessed. (Part 2 of 💙For Beginners)
💙 Live It by fandomfluffandfuck/ @fandomfluffandfuck (Evanstan AU, Haley/Chris/Sebastian, BDSM | 38K | Explicit): Chris quickly realizes - post attendance of a sex club and post butterfly inducing text threads - that being around Sebastian has him learning (learning about himself and Seb that is) and experiencing a lot. All that learning and experiencing is squashed between their first couple of dates, first kisses, first conversations about how exactly to meet in the middle, and what meeting in the middle looks like. Yet- even with all of that learning... he's pretty sure nothing will entirely prepare him for being Sebastian's boyfriend and dom.And he's, like, ninety-nine percent sure he can't wait to see what both will be like. (Part 3 of 💙For Beginners)
💙 Breathe It by fandomfluffandfuck/ @fandomfluffandfuck (Evanstan AU, BDSM | 18K | Explicit): With the help of Hayley, a sex club that Hayley brought him to, and a sort-of-but-not-really blind date (that has turned into a fully fledged relationship) Chris has admitted that he's into BDSM, he's accepted it, he's lived it in real life, and now...Now, he's practically breathing it he loves it so much. (Part 4 of 💙For Beginners)
💙 I'll See You Through It by fandomfluffandfuck/ @fandomfluffandfuck (Evanstan AU, BDSM | 9K | Explicit): Sebastian has proven again and again to be magnificent at following orders and, to be crass, at being fucked. Chris has proven to be good at giving orders and at fucking... so, would they still work if Chris is still giving orders, Sebastian following them, but Chris being the one getting fucked? (Part 5 of 💙For Beginners)
💙 Hold It (For Me) by fandomfluffandfuck/ @fandomfluffandfuck (Evanstan AU, BDSM | 8K | Explicit): Chris gets to decide what, when, and how much Sebastian drinks. Then, he gets to decide when Sebastian goes to the bathroom; which means unfortunately for Sebastian, he will be left squirming and begging, strung out on the power exchange, and then on what Chris wants to do with him once he finally is allowed to go to the bathroom. He can't help squirming and begging then too, sensitive and floaty and so fucking gone on his dominant as he touches him in the aftermath of his first release. (Part 6 of 💙For Beginners)
💙  Read, White & Blue by JJK/ @trenchcoatsandtimetravel (Shrunkyclunks, Librarian Bucky | 99K | Teen): If Steve was certain one thing would have stayed the same during his sixty-something years in the ice, it was that libraries were still the place to go if you needed information. And Steve needed information. Lots and lots of it. aka Librarian Bucky helps freshly desfrosted Steve learn how to use computers and catch up on everything he missed whilst he was in the ice.
Play Along by Anonymous (Evanstan AU, PWP, Roleplay | 1,8K | Mature): The man that opens the door is barefoot, dressed in nothing but black slacks that hug his ass and thighs in a way that has to be illegal. His torso is also bare, apart from the black ink scattered over broad expanses of pale skin. If Sebastian didn’t have a thing for tattoos before—well, he definitely does now.He swallows hard. “Hi,” he manages to get out, sounding out-of-breath even to his own ears.Chris fucking Evans just gives him a curt nod and steps aside to let him in.
You Had To Know by Anonymous (Evanstan RPF | 2K | Teen): It's the spring of 2022 and Chris Evans very nearly breaks the internet when he comes out as bisexual. Sebastian finds out the next day.
peter pan and wendy turned out fine by grandmacore/ @thedamageofherdays (Evanstan RPF | 1K | Teen): Seeing Chris's interviews during the Lightyear press tour prompts Sebastian to drunkenly confess his love for his former co-star. He immediately hangs up the phone, not wanting to face rejection. But will he actually be rejected?
Heat Wave by musette22/ @musette22 (Evanstan RPF | 2K | Mature): He takes a moment to consider Scarlett’s point. He doesn't usually come on to guys, at least not with any sort of intent, but he thinks he could be persuaded. He's mostly straight, sure, but he's not entirely immune to male good looks, nor is he averse to broadening his horizons a little. And Sebastian... Well, Sebastian is Sebastian, and Chris has a soft spot, alright?
Re-Read
💙 A Long Winter by dropdeaddream, WhatAreFears/ @whatarefears (Canon divergent, Post-TFA | 35K | Mature): In 1945, Steve Rogers jumps from a nosediving plane and swims through miles of Arctic Ocean to a frozen shore. In 1947, Steve Rogers marries Peggy Carter. In 1966, the New York Times finds the lost letters of Sergeant James Buchanan Barnes. (Part 1 of Not Easily Conquered)
💙 The Night War: 60th Anniversary Edition by praximeter (Zimario)/ @praximeter (Canon, TFA, WW2 | 109K | Teen): In 1947, Master Sergeant James B. Barnes's surviving field journals were posthumously published as the classic war memoir The Night War. Now a high school history classroom mainstay and required reading at West Point, this highly anticipated 60th Anniversary Edition presents the original, unedited text alongside detailed historical notes that provide important context to the extraordinary wartime heroics of Captain America and the Howling Commandos.
💙 happily ever after has bite marks in it by voxofthevoid/ @voxofthevoid (Canon divergent, Werewolf Steve | 29K | Explicit): Bucky Barnes is just fine.He lives by himself in a cabin in the middle of nowhere, hasn’t killed anyone for the better part of a year, remembers nearly all of his life except the parts he spent in a glorified freezer, and has nightmares only three nights out of five. It’s as good as it gets.And then he meets a mutant wolf with his dead best friend’s eyes.In which Bucky is aggressively okay with his self-imposed exile from society, and Steve is a werewolf who’s nothing like the Brooklyn boy Bucky still dreams of.
💙 Werewolf? There wolf by leveragehunters (Monkeygreen)/ @leveragehunters (Modern AU, Werewolf Steve | 9K | General): After the car accident that cost him his arm and the endless rehabilitation that got him his shiny metal Stark Industries replacement, Bucky's happy for a break from people. The house in the forest is peaceful, town's a fair distance away, and he's got no neighbours...except maybe a blue-eyed wolf and possibly a naked guy named Steve.(PS: Steve is the wolf.) (Part 1 of 💙Werewolf? There Wolf)
💙 darling heart, i loved you from the start (but that's no excuse for the state i'm in) by voxofthevoid/ @voxofthevoid (Avengers 2012 Alternate Timeline | 19K | Teen): The year is 2012. Loki has vanished with the Tesseract, and Manhattan is a blazing wreck. A very tired Steve Rogers goes home and meets another very tired Steve Rogers.Or, the one where Steve saves the mind stone for last and decides to fuck the timeline beyond all recognition, which regrettably involves crawling delicately up Hydra's asshole and less regrettably involves showering a very confused Bucky Barnes with affection.
💙 took my love, took it down by LaughsAtThunder/ @laughtsatthunder (Post-WS | 31K | Explicit): The problem, Bucky thinks now that he has most of his memories back, is that his whole entire world has always revolved around Steve Rogers. Steve has been always been half of Bucky’s identity. Bucky Barnes, Steve Rogers’ best friend. Bucky Barnes, Steve Rogers’ wingman. Bucky Barnes, Steve Rogers’ teammate. And now, well, now Steve had other people to fill those positions. And of course, of course he’d always been a little bit in love with Steve. So when he overhears Steve telling Natasha that he’s finally found someone he’d like to date, someone with similar life experience, Bucky clings blindly to the hope that maybe, just maybe, Steve is talking about him.
💙 Wanna Feel the Heat With Somebody by 2bestfriends/ @addyetc (A/B/O AU, Office romance | 72K | Explicit): Bucky hasn't exactly been a risk-taker in his life, but when you're not only the baby of the family but also the only Omega, risks aren't encouraged, either. So it comes as a shock to himself and his three older, overbearing sisters when he suddenly quits his shitty but reliable job of five years to accept the unsolicited offer from Stark & Rogers. He can't help hoping this will be his chance to find his own way, for once.Too bad a certain cofounder's scent has him trailing behind the tall, gorgeous Alpha like a lovesick idiot.
💙 to memory now I can't recall by Etharei/ @etharei (Canon divergent, Time Travel | 102K | Explicit): While on a mission storming a HYDRA facility, James Buchanan Barnes touches one of the many strange alien devices collected by the Red Skull. He does this, in fact, twice— in the past, and in the future.Next thing he knows, Bucky Barnes is opening his eyes in the 21st century, which is full of great gadgets and coffee, and at least includes his old pal Steve. (And, inexplicably, a different Stark.) Meanwhile, the Winter Soldier finds himself in the middle of World War Two, helping Captain America hunt down HYDRA (which is at least familiar), pretending to be Bucky Barnes (which is not), and figuring out the very noisy group of soldiers who call themselves the Howling Commandos.
💙 if you're looking for jesus (then get on your knees) by voxofthevoid/ @voxofthevoid (Nomad Steve, SHIELD agent Bucky | 18K | Explicit): S.H.I.E.L.D Agent Bucky Barnes is captured on a mission and meets Commander Steve Rogers, the erstwhile Captain America. (Part 1 of i'm guilty of treason (i've abandoned control))
💙 i'm a ghost, you're an angel (one and the same) by voxofthevoid/ @voxofthevoid (Nomad Steve, SHIELD agent Bucky | 31K | Explicit): Steve tries to seduce Bucky over to the dark side. But the Avengers are more grey than dark, and it’s still a paler shade of grey than what S.H.I.E.L.D’s got going nine times out of ten. Bucky really should be more concerned about the seduction part. (Part 2 of i'm guilty of treason (i've abandoned control))
Five Minute Ficlet
The sound of the heart monitor was steady and regular, and you craned your neck to check on it even though you knew it was completely normal. You were in an awkward position in the medical bay, with the monitor above your head and behind you a little. Your leg was elevated and trying to see what any of the readings on the monitor were was frustrating you completely.
You pulled the pulse oximeter off your finger to trigger the alarm and bring someone in. You knew the sounds of the medical unit well enough to know there were no emergencies you’d be interrupting, but you also knew there were more injured bound to be coming in, and the sooner they got you treated and on your feet, the quicker you could help with the other casualties.
“I know you’re just doing this to be difficult -” Cassie, a young nurse opened the curtain to come in, quickly assessed the situation and shook her head. “Put the damn pulse ox back on.”
“Everything is fine, I just need some stitches in my leg and I can free up a bed and help out,” you retorted. She shook her head.
“Your BP is still ridiculously high, and there’s some kind of infection already setting in. You’ve got a fever starting,” she replied. “We’re working on a culture, just to make sure it wasn’t a toxin added to the weapon. You need to chill out and accept that you’re a patient right now.”
“The knife was filthy, it’s nothing a little cefixime won’t cure. Gimme a shot, get me sewn up, and I’ll be out of your hair,” you argued.
“Helen was right. Nurses are the worst patients,” Cassie laughed. “Settle down or I’ll sedate you.”
“I hate this shit,” you grumbled. “At least move the monitor so I can see it?” You asked. Cassie rolled her eyes but complied. Sure enough, she was right. Your blood pressure was rising, and with it, your temperature. You flopped back on the gurney and sighed heavily.
“Never been injured before, have you?” A low voice came from the curtain beside you. You glared at the curtain.
“I’m a nurse, not a fucking superhero,” you snapped. The pain in your leg was destroying your patience.
“Some people might argue that,” he chuckled.
“The nurse part or the superhero part?” You asked. “Sorry. I don’t do sidelined well, I’m not meaning to be so snippy.”
“Sweetheart, every nurse I’ve ever met was some kind of hero.” His voice was kind, and you didn’t recognize it. “And every single one got cranky when they were the patient.”
“I wasn’t exactly expecting to get stabbed when I came in to work today,” you admitted. The wound was burning and little shocks were shooting out from it on occasion.
“Who does?” There was amusement in his tone and you caught the hint of Brooklyn in his accent. “It’s little more my line of work.”
“You’re a soldier?” You asked, and immediately felt stupid. Of course he was. Ninety-nine percent of the men on the base were soldiers. There were a very scant few consultants, and a few days earlier a group of superheroes showed up, including the new Captain America, Sam Wilson, and the rest of his team. You thought you’d also caught a glimpse of Bucky Barnes, but weren’t sure.
“Not for a while,” he admitted. “I’m here supporting Wilson. Truth be told, I feel like you being stabbed is our fault. We brought the fight on base.”
“Supporting like you’re the tech guy, or supporting like you’re Mr. Tall, Dark and Brooding?” Maybe it was a toxin in your leg because you wouldn’t normally talk like that. You laid back and forced your breathing to slow.
“Tall, Dark and Brooding?” He choked out.
“Yeah, I thought I saw Barnes arrive with Wilson. Can’t be sure, but he looked hot enough that it might be him.” You slapped your hands over your mouth in surprise. There was another chuckle from the other side of the curtain.
“I’ve heard a lot of things about the Winter Soldier, but I’ve never heard him called hot.”
“Are you kidding? The man is the definition of the word. He’s the only person Avengers or Avengers-adjacent that I would even consider,” you blurted. And immediately regretted it, but found yourself unable to stop.
“That so?”
You cringed and said nothing, forcing yourself to listen to the rhythmic beep of your pulse for a while.
“You okay over there, sweetheart?” His voice broke through your silent contemplation.
“Yeah, just trying to make myself invisible,” you admitted.
“Nothing to be embarrassed about.” You could tell he was smiling, whoever he was. The curiosity got the better of you. Rolling onto your side, you pulled open the curtain to reveal the man in the gurney beside you. Just ask quickly, you let it drop closed and rolled onto your back, pulling a pillow over your face.
“Oh fuck,” you groaned.
“If it makes you feel better, I only got a glimpse, but you’re easy on the eyes too,” he said. “And I’d say you’re the only medical or medical-adjacent person I would consider.”
“Well, maybe when I’m not leaking blood and brewing some sort of infection, we can continue this conversation,” you said. He laughed. You were so lost in your embarrassment that you didn’t notice the decreasing intervals between the beeps of the heart rate monitor indicating that your heart was racing. “It’d be ni-”
“Nurse! Nurse! She’s flatlining!” you heard as you lost consciousness.
Adventuresses Break Barriers
Tumblr media
Adventuresses Gussie and Addie Van Buren wanted to be motorcycle dispatch riders for the US Army.
To prove that they could, and that women were just as good riders as men, the sisters set off on a cross country trek. They left Brooklyn on 4 July 1916 on their Indian Power Plus motorcycles and headed west.
From the Van Buren sisters website: “The Lincoln Highway was their intended route but in those days it was mostly just an idea, a line on a map. Dirt roads, either full of ruts or transformed into mud, was the reality. They proceeded, got lost, fell off their bikes, got mired in mud, ran out of water in the desert, and had to hike to the nearest town for help.
” While most of the people they encountered on the way were supportive and helpful, they did run afoul with some officials for their choice in dress. The sisters were arrested several times not for their driving, but for wearing pants.
Gussie and Addie Van Buren finally arrived in San Diego on 8 September 1916, crossing the country in 60 days. They then rode across the border to Tijuana to complete their journey. In spite of this accomplishment, the Army rejected the sisters’ applications to be dispatch riders.
Undeterred, the sisters would continue to break barriers - Addie by becoming one of the few women lawyers in the US in that period, and Gussie becoming a pilot and joining Amelia Earhart’s Ninety-Nines, an international group that promotes and supports women pilots. Women were finally allowed to serve as dispatch riders in World War II.
behind the scenes shots ft. akd as the adjudicator, from this article about the cinematography
“In Hollywood, action filmmaking was kind of looked down upon until The Matrix, and then people realized that action could also be part of the story,” [director] Stahelski notes. “I come from a place of loving dance and theater and fine art — action can be all of those things — and one of my favorite painters is Caravaggio.” When he was looking for a cinematographer for John Wick: Chapter 2, Stahelski recalls, “I asked myself, ‘Who paints with light?’ The answer is Dan Laustsen.” In strictly cinematographic terms, Parabellum functions less like an action movie and more like a Hollywood studio musical. The film’s first battle is a close-quarters knife fight in an antique weapons shop, where the camera cuts from wide shot to wide shot, sustaining the action in long takes so that the audience can better appreciate the physical prowess of Reeves’ performance — an elaborate fighting style that combines Japanese judo and jujitsu, Brazilian jujitsu, Russian sambo, Filipino kali, and Muay Thai, more for the benefit of show than for self-defense.  “Ninety-nine percent of high-level stunt work is dance — not pirouettes, but how you move your body,” asserts Stahelski, who continues to train stuntpeople with Leitch through their company 87eleven. “I love the aesthetic of motion. A lot of our shots [in Parabellum] are lifted straight from Singin’ in the Rain and West Side Story. We’re mixing Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin with Hong Kong cinema from John Woo, Jackie Chan and the Shaw Brothers.” “We wanted to go wider than Hollywood action films normally do and really show off the choreography,” Laustsen agrees. “When the camera, lighting and actors are all moving together, it really is a dance.”
“After we made Chapter 2,” Laustsen notes, “we discussed how we could make 3 even more visually powerful. The main setting was still New York, but we wanted to bring out the city even more forcefully. We decided to shoot all at night, with rain as much as possible. Rain is fantastic because it gives a third dimension to the picture, but it is a challenge to do it, especially in a city like New York.”
The Master Anamorphics’ low-distortion design also prevents dramatic, streaking lens flares, and so the technicians at Arri Rental in Secaucus, N.J., fashioned a flare filter — comprising three strands of nylon fishing line stretched across an empty filter frame — for the XT’s and Mini’s Internal Filter Modules. When a front-of-lens filter produces a flare, Laustsen observes, it “just looks like the light is catching on a piece of flat glass in front of the lens. It’s more beautiful when the flare comes from the lens itself” — and that’s the effect that was replicated with the behind-the-lens nylon lines. “With the filters inside the camera,” the cinematographer adds, “it was also easier for first assistant Craig Pressgrove to do the lens changes.”
The exterior of the Continental was shot in lower Manhattan, but the hotel’s interiors were filmed in downtown Brooklyn, in the former Williamsburgh Savings Bank tower — which now serves as an event space —whose glass-and-wrought-iron front doors open to a 128'-long vaulted banking hall with limestone facing, marble floors, carved teller stations, and a 63'-high ceiling supported by Romanesque columns. For its role as the Continental’s lobby, the hall was furnished by Kavanaugh with two round settees crowned with statues of the Roman war gods Bellona and Mars, a fully-stocked bar, and a lounge on the mezzanine.
Parabellum’s stages were located at Gold Coast Studios in Long Island, N.Y. The first of the production’s two notable stage-bound sets is the Continental’s terrace, for which the Rockefeller Center rooftop garden was used in Chapter 2. The schedule didn’t allow for much time to shoot Parabellum’s scene, which takes place at sunrise. “You cannot make the sun rise [for] a movie,” Laustsen notes wryly. “It’s one or two shots, and then you have daylight, and then you’re fighting to control the light.”  So, for more control, the scene was moved onstage, where the set was surrounded with a sectional 45'x350' bluescreen lit with SkyPanel S120s; a 120' black velour curtain was used to control blue spill coming from off-camera. Early-morning ambience was provided by 176 overhead SkyPanel S60s, and the light of the rising sun was simulated by a 20K tungsten Fresnel and a 24K Dino light with medium bulbs, both gelled with 1⁄2 CTS. The other key set built at Gold Coast was the “manager’s office,” a labyrinthine two-story glass-and-steel structure meant to represent the top floors of the Continental, with a 270-degree view of the adjacent skyscrapers. It’s in this space that Wick and Zero ultimately face off mano a mano. “The concept was to create a space where everything is exposed, a place where there are no secrets,” Kavanaugh explains.  To help him integrate the lighting into the design of the set itself, Laustsen worked with a virtual-reality computer model based on Kavanaugh’s design. “Chad, Kevin and I had discussions about color — cool lights inside, warm light outside,” says the cinematographer, who wanted what he describes as an “organic” light element for both spaces. The art department therefore added a 35'x14' LED wall to the set’s second floor and a 28'x12' LED billboard to the rooftop; the latter was positioned between the glass structure and a 40'x440' Rosco SoftDrop that was backlit by 150 SkyPanel S60s through Magic Cloth sourced from The Rag Place.  Almeida and his rigging crew installed more than a mile of LiteGear Chroma-Correct RGB-Daylite LED LiteRibbon into the glass and steel set, using aluminum profile and plastic diffusers provided by Kavanaugh’s art department. Cues were orchestrated from an ETC Ion Xe console operated by Kent Arneson; Laustsen took advantage of that control to increase the intensity of the light over time — until the very end of the fight, when the two combatants are photographed primarily in silhouette against the LED walls.
Wick literally fights his way through the set — alternately smashing his opponents and being smashed through glass pedestals, walls and floors — until he comes face to face with his nemesis. “We filmed this sequence with a [Chapman/Leonard Hustler IV] dolly and a Libra head, a Steadicam, and a couple of crane shots [with a MovieBird 45 and Aerocrane jib],” Laustsen details. “We didn’t want to go handheld because of all the straight lines. It would be a much more powerful look for the film if the frame was always parallel to the set.” “When we did bring in lights for the close-ups, we used Arri SkyPanel S60s and Astera AX1 LED tubes that we could attach virtually anywhere using magnets and clips,” Almeida adds. “The Astera tubes worked out great because they’re easy to hide, and if you saw a reflection, it just looked like the lighting that was built-in already.”
The nocebo effect is still observed most commonly during drug trials, where self-fulfilling prophecies come to pass. Volunteers warned about possible side effects frequently develop them, even if they have been taking inert sugar pills. In 2005, 120 Italian men who were being treated for enlargement of the prostate gland were given a drug called finasteride. One group was told that the drug could cause sexual problems, although this was uncommon, while the other group was not. After a year, forty-four percent of those in the first group complained of erectile problems and decreased libido, compared with fifteen percent in the second. Each year, millions of people around the world stop taking statins, which reduce cholesterol levels, because of side effects that include fatigue, muscle aches, joint pain and nausea. In 2020, a study of patients who had given up statins found that they also complained of ninety percent of their side effects when given a placebo. For a fact of life, the nocebo effect is hard to study. Most researchers don’t like to induce suffering, even if they are allowed to. The response occurs for the most part at the edges of things, an anomaly recognized only after the fact, once more pleasing theories have been tried and failed.
It takes a certain kind of doctor to test the nocebo directly. In the summer of 1885, a thirty-two-year-old woman, “very stout, well-nourished but physically weak,” was referred to Dr. John Noland MacKenzie, a surgeon in Baltimore, with crippling hay fever and asthma. The woman was confined to her bed for weeks every summer and autumn. If a hay-cart passed her in the street, she would suffer a paroxysm. She could not touch a peach. Ordinary medicine provided no relief. Cold weather and trips to the seaside were somewhat beneficial. Cocaine relieved her symptoms for half an hour at the most, “leaving her, as a rule, worse off than she was before its application.”
MacKenzie prepared a prescription of his own devising. After two weeks, he wrote, the woman felt much better. After a month, MacKenzie invited the patient to his consulting room, where he had hidden an artificial rose—“a perfect counterfeit of the original”—behind a screen. MacKenzie had wiped every petal before she arrived, to make sure it was clean. He checked that the woman was well and then sat down in front of her with the rose in his hand. After a minute, she began to sneeze. Within five minutes, her nose was clogged and inflamed. “The feeling of oppression in her chest began, with slight embarrassment of respiration.” Breathing became a struggle. “As I considered the result of the experiment sufficiently satisfactory, I removed the rose and placed it in a distant part of the room,” MacKenzie wrote. When he told the woman that the flower wasn’t real, she inspected it leaf by leaf, in disbelief, her nose streaming.
In 1968, a team of psychiatrists in Brooklyn asked forty asthma sufferers to help them with a study of air pollutants. Almost half experienced a tightening of their airways when they inhaled a harmless vapor of saline solution. Twelve had full-blown asthma attacks. The nocebo effect can stop good medicine from working. When researchers gave migraine sufferers rizatriptan, a powerful migraine medication, but said it was a placebo, it turned out to be half as effective. For about half an hour, patients with Parkinson’s disease who have electrodes implanted in their brains to help smooth their movements will do better or worse at motor tasks depending on whether they believe their electrodes are working, rather than whether they actually are. During a placebo trial described in 2006, a twenty-six-year-old man swallowed twenty-nine inert capsules, thinking they were antidepressants, in an apparent suicide attempt. His blood pressure collapsed and he was taken to the hospital, where the symptoms abated when he was told what he had taken.
The nocebo effect is at least partly contagious. If you see someone suffering pain or entering an altered state during an experiment, you are much more likely to experience the same thing when it is your turn. The social force of the nocebo effect means that it can give rise to peculiar, localized conditions. In 2007, the maker of Eltroxin, a thyroid-replacement drug distributed in New Zealand, moved its manufacture from Canada to Germany. The active ingredients in the drug remained the same, but the new pills looked different. They were larger; some were off-white, rather than yellow. After the media reported that the new Eltroxin was cheaper to make, reports of side effects among New Zealanders rose by a factor of two thousand.
Beliefs do not become weaker because they are shared. Between 1977 and 1982, more than fifty Hmong refugees in the U.S., who came primarily from Laos, died from sudden nocturnal death syndrome. Their hearts stopped in the night. The community generally interpreted these deaths as the consequence of lethal nightmares, known as dab tsog. People became afraid to go to bed. “You can’t help but behave in a way that is the result of having been immersed since birth in a certain set of attitudes and thoughts,” recalled Shelley Adler, the director of the Osher Center at the University of California, San Francisco, who interviewed hundreds of Hmong people about the deaths. Postmortems revealed that some of the victims suffered from abnormal heart rhythms, which could have been exacerbated by the stress of immigration and the fear of an evil spirit crushing their chest in the night.
(Brooklyn gulped down the last of his drink) "th...thank you Mister" "Crump-Alistair Crump I remembered that I never told you my name I do apologize for that" (Crump got up from his seat Brooklyn noticed that he had a cane and that he was walking with a limp but also there was a big..box on the table) "I hope the meal was enough" (Brooklyn nodded up at him with a smile small) "it was Mister Crump thank you" (the child then yawned loudly making Crump chuckle softy) "as well as you were starving you are also very exhausted come I will take you to a room available" (Brooklyn was going to protest but the man took his hand and helped him off the chair as servants went to clean the table) "there's plenty of rooms here in this manor you know enough for nine hundred and ninety nine and always one more" (Brooklyn laughed softy at the little joke, Crump looked back at the servants watching them leave he gave then a glare eyes flashing yellow and they quickly went back to work the two walked passed Randall-Crump stopped for a moment making the boy look up in confusion) "what's wrong Mister Crump?" (he looked down) "nothing lad" (he did side glance where Randall stood before moving on).
Randall similarly gave Crump something of a disdainful side-eye, still regarding him with a great deal of suspicion: He still didn't believe Crump was taking Brooklyn in for purely altruistic means; something just kept nagging him, as if waiting for the other shoe to drop...
800 words written today.  Woke up very late today, which was certainly less than ideal in many ways including for my own peace of mind. (Look, despite being a night owl for most of my life, I can’t shake the internalized shame of getting up after noon, even if it doesn’t interfere with my life in any noticeable way because I’m not currently on A Schedule.)  Idly watching old episodes of Spooks/MI-5, which I think I last saw when I was in grad school #1, a.k.a. ten years ago, trying to get into spyjinks headspace.
Snippet from Of Home Near chapter 2.
“God, this was five minutes after I finished throwing up,” Steve added fondly, indicating the Coney Island picture.  “Bucky’s ma insisted, though, for my ma to have since she was working that day.  She was a good lady.  I wrote to her, after –”  He bit his lip, shaking his head.  “She’s buried next to him – next to his tombstone, anyway; the grave in Brooklyn’s empty, like the one in Arlington.  Obviously.”
He laid the photographs across his knee and rubbed his hands over his face, his expression suddenly showing every one of his ninety-nine years – he was still a few months short of his century.  “I can’t go after him,” he said, his voice harsh with agony.  “Even if we had any idea where Hydra has him right now –” The Winter Soldier records they had found only started in 1957, leaving a twelve-year gap. “– I can’t risk affecting the war.  I don’t think the Allies would lose it at this point, but I can’t – there are a lot of ways it could go worse than it actually did.”
“I’m Russian, Steve, I know,” Natasha said.  She put a hand on his shoulder and he leaned heavily against her, breathing hard.
“I’m scared enough as it is that Howard’s here dealing with us instead of in New Mexico, and I’m still not even sure he actually was involved with the Manhattan Project or if that was just cover for him being in the SSR,” Steve said miserably.
INTRODUCING... MY BROOKLYN NINE-NINE ORIGINAL CHARACTER, NICKY BAUER
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
❝ Nicky was used to not being “normal”. He’d been diagnosed as autistic at the tender age of eleven, and from that point on had been the subject of many hateful looks and uncreative taunts from his neurotypical classmates, who apparently thought that having an autistic person among them was the worst kind of injustice. Nicky had then been disowned and thrown out of the house at the age of seventeen by his fervently religious parents, who apparently could accept an autistic son but not a gay one, and had been forced to rely on the kindness of his friends’ families for a place to stay until he had graduated high school and won a university scholarship that allowed him to stay in a dorm on campus.
Years after graduating from university and the police academy and finally becoming a detective like he’d always dreamed, Nicky was transferred to Brooklyn’s ninety-ninth precinct, where he expected to once again be treated like a strange outsider by his “normal” co-workers. But to his utter surprise, Nicky quickly found himself one of the only sensible people in his new workplace, at least compared to Jake Peralta’s chaotic antics, his captain’s general incompetence, and... literally everything that went on with Hitchcock and Scully.
But now the Nine-Nine has a new captain, a much more serious one who promises to finally knock some sense into this madhouse of a precinct. However, Jake continues to resist Holt’s attempts at forcing him to act responsibly, Rosa continues to be a stoic lover of weapons and violence, and Nicky? He continues to be an awkward mess of bad jokes and fidget toys who has a hopeless crush on his most chaotic co-worker.
Maybe Nicky’s life, and Nicky himself, will never be “normal”. But, maybe, that’s not as bad a thing as he’s always lead himself to believe. ❞
