Tea Time: Fireweed
lf you’ve seen one fireweed, you’ve probably seen several. As an early successional species, growing in large numbers across a vast amount of space is kind of its thing. Any disturbance that leaves bare ground in its wake, such as a wildfire or a windstorm, gives fireweed the opportunity to colonize. It grows quickly and spreads via rhizomes, producing thousands of airborne seeds in the process,…

Many plants are starting to feature berries or seeds instead of flowers, but a few late season wildflowers are hanging in there. Fireweed (Chamerion angustifolium) has tall stems with numerous pink flowers that begin blooming lower on the stalk, moving upwards as the season progresses. Flowers that bloomed earlier may already be going to seed while flowers at the top of the same plant are still in bloom! You can find fireweed around the park from low to subalpine elevations.
Remember to please stay on trail! It doesn’t take many steps to trample the wildflowers you are coming to see. Many trails offer great opportunities for that perfect mountain + wildflower photo. Where are you finding wildflowers?
For updates on what’s blooming where visit https://go.nps.gov/RainierWildflower

I Will Not Be Afraid Going Out to Explore Nature (Katmai National Park & Preserve) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: I Will Not Be Afraid Going Out to Explore Nature It is far too wondrous to not see and feel I will watch to not make waves or disturb The serenity untouched out of principle Yes, my camera is with me, but as I capture that I will also make a point to see and respect it It waited a few millions of year for me to see it, after all. I'll just let nature steal the show! Another work of short poetry or prose to complement the image captured one morning in Katmai National Park & Preserve while on a hike up the side of Dumpling Mountain. This is a view looking to the east-southeast across the mountainside to knock Naknek Lake and then distant mountains of the Aleutian Ranges. By angling my Nikon SLR camera slightly downward, I felt I was able to capture a more sweeping view looking down this mountainside with all the colors of the fireweed plants and trees present before coming to the mountains and mostly cloudy skies above. I felt I need to do include a portion of those as it did add to the vast expanse and majesty of this national park setting and landscape.
