A live-action film adaptation of Masashi Kishimoto's Naruto manga is in the works at Lionsgate.
Destin Daniel Cretton, who co-wrote and directed the Marvel Studios movie Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, has been tapped to pen and helm a live-action adaptation of the title for Lionsgate.
Cretton will also produced alongside Jeyun Munford through his company, Hisako. The duo join Avi Arad, Ari Arad and Emmy Yu of Arad Productions, who are behind the studio’s upcoming video game adaptation Borderlands, and Jeremy Latcham (Dungeons & Dragons).
Cretton has Kishimoto’s blessing, something bestowed upon him after a visit to Tokyo.
“When I heard of Destin’s attachment, it happened to be right after watching a blockbuster action film of his, and I thought he would be the perfect director for Naruto,” said Kishimoto in a statement. “After enjoying his other films and understanding that his forte is in creating solid dramas about people, I became convinced that there is no other director for Naturo. In actually meeting Destin, I also found him to be an open-minded director who was willing to embrace my input, and felt strongly that we would be able to cooperate together in the production process.”

Destin Daniel Cretton has decided to step away as director of Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Kang Dynasty to focus on his other Marvel projects.
Cretton is currently busy on the Marvel Studios/Disney+ series Wonder Man, which he co-created with Andrew Guest, who serves as showrunner. Cretton EPs the series and also directed the first two episodes. The series resumes shooting after Thanksgiving.
The filmmaker is also currently working on the sequel to the $432M-plus global grossing hit he directed, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. That movie is the highest grossing AAPI superhero movie ever and also owns the record opening over the 4-day Labor Day holiday weekend with $94.6M stateside.

Okay, hear me out on this: “Short Round - An Indiana Jones Story”.
Ke Huy Quan is obviously the lead. At this point in the timeline, Short Round is an adventurer in his own right, although he still wears his signature baseball cap.
Michelle Yeoh is the co-lead/love interest. For their dynamic, think Indy and Marion Ravenwood. Or Nathan Drake and Elena.
Chloe Bennet is the tritagonist. She plays an orphan who joins Short Round on his journey and later learns that she is his long-lost daughter.
Kento Yamazaki is the main antagonist. He plays a ruthless Yakuza boss who wants to destroy his rivals with the mythical item that Short Round is looking for.
Destin Daniel Cretton is the director.
Show is mostly set in 1960s Japan. The mythical item being sought is the “Cursed Sword of Muramasa”, a katana with magical properties, but curses the user with madness and a thirst for blood.

Damn it looks like that Naruto live action movie really is happening… at least Kishimoto himself is involved, so maybe it won’t be a total train wreck?

I called this movie being fast-tracked after One Piece and to a lesser extent Yu Yu Hakusho were big hits for Netflix. It even has a director, the guy responsible for Shang-Chi (one of the few positively reviewed things in Marvel’s Phase 4). No word on a cast yet though. Pray for those poor kids.
