Booklet Description: 7. RATON PASS is where the Sante Fe Trail crosses into New Mexico from Colorado. In 1821 Captain W. Beck-nell freighted goods by pack-horse from Missouri for the first time, establish a new trade route with the East. The dangerous trek was 1,200 miles shorter than the old one through Mexico and up to El Camino Real (The Royal Road). Until the coming of the railroad in the 1880's the Sante Fe Trail was one of the main highways for transcontinental travel.

El 9 de octubre se celebra el Día Europeo del Arte Rupestre, en homenaje al 117 aniversario del reconocimiento efectuado por la comunidad científica internacional, acerca de la autenticidad del arte de la cueva de Altamira.

Esta efeméride ha sido proclamada por el Consejo de Europa y la Comisión Europea, a petición de la Asociación Europea Caminos de Arte Rupestre Prehistórico (Prehistoric Rock Art Trails), formando parte de los Días Europeos del Patrimonio (European Heritage Days).

De acuerdo a investigaciones recientes, el arte rupestre data desde hace unos 42.000 años en Europa. A partir del año 1976 se han clasificado 11 yacimientos de arte rupestre en el continente europeo, como Patrimonio de la Humanidad.Por otra parte, se han abierto al público unos 250 sitios de arte rupestre, en los países miembros del Consejo de Europa.

¿Por qué se escogió esta fecha?

La fecha de celebración de este Día Europeo del Patrimonio coincide con el aniversario del artículo publicado en el año 1902 por el arqueólogo francés Émile Cartailhac, denominado "La grotte d’Altamira, Espagne. Mea culpa d’un sceptique".

En dicho artículo, dirigido a la familia del descubridor de la cueva de Altamira, reconoció su equivocación al dudar acerca de la autenticidad de los descubrimientos de arte rupestre paleolítico, en la cueva de Cantabria.

La Cueva de Altamira, Patrimonio de la Humanidad

La Cueva de Altamira fue descubierta por un lugareño, Modesto Cubillas en 1868. Acompañado por Cubillas, Marcelino Sanz de Sautuola visitó por primera vez la cueva en 1875 y reconoció algunas líneas que entonces no consideró obra humana.

Pero posteriormente, en 1879 Sautuola regresó a la cueva con su hija de cinco años, que, llevada por su curiosidad, se introdujo en una de las salas laterales y vio unas pinturas en el techo. Corrió a decírselo a su padre que se quedó sorprendido por el descubrimiento.

Se ubica en el interior del recinto del Museo Nacional y Centro de Investigación de Altamira, en la localidad de Santillana del Mar. En su vestíbulo se observan muestras de arte paleolítico, que datan entre 35.000 y 11.000 años a. C.

Esta cueva es considerada Patrimonio de la Humanidad desde el año 1985. Se incluyeron 17 grutas ornamentadas de la época paleolítica, a principios del siglo XX.

La Sala de los Policromos, conocida como la Capilla Sixtina del arte cuaternario, conserva 20 bicromos con formas de bisontes (unos 20) bicromos.

¿Cómo se celebra este Día Europeo del Arte Rupestre?

En la celebración de esta efeméride se realizan jornadas y eventos dirigidos al público en los principales enclaves europeos con arte rupestre, tales como museos, yacimientos arqueológicos y centros culturales.

Entre los enclaves más simbólicos se destacan el Museo de Altamira (España), Lascaux IV (Francia), el Parque Arqueológico de Valcamonica (Italia) y el Parque Nacional de Hossa (Finlandia).

I slept well at the Albergue Camino Real. Which isn’t to say I didn’t still get up at 6 am. I think most of the pilgrims were out the door before I was. I want to give the town of Point Valley (From Out of the Hunt) a new name, so I'm doing a poll to help me out.

Background info: Small town in a valley with a river/creek, that sits on the outskirts of the nation.(In the former Wyoming) It's the last stop on the railroad line, afterwards you have to hike/horseback beyond the valley to get to other nations. (and a famous trading route) It's technically outside the nations borders (like an Enclave or Gibraltar to Spain), but the surrounding areas isn't claim by any other nation. (It's considered uninhabitable). The nation uses a mix of English, Spanish and French.

I really want something simple that sounds good (the town is central to the story)

Eran seleccionados desde niños, los cuales además de correr muy rápido, debían ser muy atléticos y muy resistentes, ya que tenían que cubrir grandes distancias a grandes velocidades haciendo relevo de mensajería, ya que la comunicación en el imperio dependía de ellos.

El especial entrenamiento al que eran sometidos, hacía que sus pulmones se desarrollaran mucho, para así soportar recorrer grandes distancias a grandes velocidades. La Hoja de Coca, sagrada para los incas ayudaba a los chasquis a soportar los fatigantes recorridos en las alturas. Eran pocas las personas a las que se les permitía masticar hojas de coca, considerada por los incas como una planta divina, el chasqui tenía un papel privilegiado en la cultura inca.

El término chasqui proviene del quechua chaskiq o chaskij, que significa ‘el que recibe y da’, y esta era precisamente su labor.

Los mensajes transportados por los chasquis eran cifrados en quipus; estos contenían registros oficiales, información de logística y demás información importante para el imperio.

Los chasquis podían atravesar la cordillera de los andes, la selva amazónica, o los extensos desiertos de la costa del Perú antiguo. Se dice que corrían alrededor de 2.4 kilómetros de un tampu (puesto de control y abastecimiento) a otro, luego de esto el mensaje era entregado a otro chasqui, quien lo llevaría hasta el siguiente puesto de control. Este sistema de relevo o postas hacia que los chasquis pudieran cubrir grandes distancias en cortos periodos de tiempo.

Los chasquis podían trasladar un mensaje hasta 320 kilómetros en un solo día. Esto hacia que un mensaje llegue desde la capital, Cusco, hasta Quito Ecuador, en solo cuatro días, cubriendo una distancia de 1.250 kilómetros. Esto es realmente asombroso, tomando en cuenta que solo son personas corriendo.

Los chasquis también sirvieron como sistema de alerta y espionaje. En caso de producirse un levantamiento en algún territorio lejano del imperio. La noticia debía llegar a la brevedad posible, para que así el Inca y sus generales pudieran organizar las estrategias.

Luego de la conquista del Imperio, los españoles quedaron tan impresionados con la eficacia del “correo humano”, es así que los chasquis siguieron sirviendo durante la época del virreinato.

En la actualidad el Trail Running o atletismo de montaña que también se lo corre en la altura y algunas veces por los caminos originales del Qhapaq ñan.

Se podría decir que aún se conserva este sistema de mensajería solo que ahora transmitimos amor hacia práctica deportiva y sobretodo al cariño y respeto inmenso por las montañas, corriendo por los Andes muy valiosos y llenos de muchas historias.

Viento de Octubre.

El viento es la vía de la voz, del perfume, del pensamiento... de la vida. Es aliento mágico. Tantas voces, ignorando que son imposibles de escuchar, vagan a la deriva en un murmullo que el viento arropó. Hablar de “esas voces” es darles pauta a que se hagan presentes, aunque ya van dejando una estela de frío tras las espaldas de quienes se han atrevido a nombrarlas; buscan atarse a un cuerpo..., a un oído..., a unos labios para hablar a través de ellos y, así, poder sembrar un pensamiento o, tal vez, un escalofrío.

El viento calla, deteniéndose el tiempo con él, pero “esas voces” no dejan de moverse; flotando, se esparcen en el ambiente; sollozan o ríen, atreviéndose a acercarse a quienes las nombra, sin embargo, sólo una podrá meterse en la piel de quien la elija; aquel que vibre con Ella.

No se van, no porque no quieran, sino porque no pueden. Se les tiene prohibido ascender, pues no terminaron lo que debían hacer en esta vida. Así es que vagan, buscando una solución a su error, aferrándose a los vivos, a quienes llenan de miedo sin la intención de hacerlo, mientras lloran por no poderlos tocar.

¡Ánimas benditas!

¡Espíritus que vagan!

¡Vengan, yo sabré soportar su agonía!

Escucharé su nombre y su encomienda.

October wind.

The wind is the way of voice, of perfume, of thought... of life. It is magical breath. So many voices, unaware that they are impossible to hear, drift in a murmur that the wind tucks away. To speak of "those voices" is to give them a chance to become present, although they are already leaving a trail of cold behind the backs of those who have dared to name them; they seek to attach themselves to a body..., to an ear..., to some lips to speak through them and, thus, to be able to sow a thought or, perhaps, a shiver.

The wind is silent, stopping the time with it, but "those voices" do not stop moving; floating, they spread in the environment; they sob or laugh, daring to approach those who name them, however, only one will be able to get into the skin of the one who chooses it; the one who vibrates with them.

They don’t leave, not because they don’t want to, but because they cannot. They are forbidden to ascend, for they didn’t finish what they were meant to do in this life. So they wander, seeking a solution to their error, clinging to the living, whom they fill with fear without intending to do so, while they weep for not being able to touch them.

Blessed souls! Wandering spirits! Come, I will know how to bear your agony! I will listen to your name and your command. I will be the way to return to the center of the Earth.

Soul that sobs! Fear has slipped away from me. I have in my mind the perfect space to make you live, again.

I myself am a ghost living in a body that is not mine. I myself begged for the salvation of my soul when I found myself in the abyss.

So many voices, so many...! And the world does not end. Where will the souls go that heaven does not shelter?

Perhaps, they walk among us, wearing fine suits and dresses... Or, perhaps, they talk to us as if they were still alive.

And it is that, for "those voices", death does not exist; they have been given the gift of oblivion; they have been abandoned to their fate; they have been denied Paradise with the only promise that is death.
