My cousin and I were playing with the camera settings on our phones. This is what Samsung can do for you at night. Yes, that moon pic is taken with a phone. 馃槏
Hilton Head's lagoons are a treat for human eyes and home to all manner of creature, but they also serve a crucial function: drainage.
The 11-mile-long Palmetto Dunes salt-water lagoon system - the second largest man-made lagoon system in the U.S. - winds through 2,000-plus acres of neighborhoods, golf courses and maritime hardwood forests.
It was built in the 1970s to address two problems - shallow waterways on the island and a vanishing beachfront. Before the lagoons were dug receding tides and the seepage of ground water made the island's 150-foot-wide beach too waterlogged to use.
Here鈥檚 a new piece of artwork of mine! I created it in an hour during my group art therapy class. The prompt was to create a piece of art that is a vacation away from anxiety and stress. So I created this scene. It鈥檚 supposed to be my favorite spot on the beach on Hilton Head Island in South Carolina. My girlfriend and I had a lovely day trip there last week so the scene was very fresh in my mind.
I also wanted to play with mixed mediums! So the sky is oragami paper and the rest is acrylic paint. The clouds on the sky were the result of a happy accident. I used tape to separate the sky from the sea and when I went to readjust it before pressing it down it ripped up some of the paper with it! At first I was like oh shit! But then I saw that the exposed white canvas made for lovely clouds, so I did the same technique across the sky to create pretty little clouds. And the bird in the sky is an albatross. I really love how this artwork turned out.
[Image ID: The picture is a photograph of a painting surrounded by a wooden grain desk. The painting is of a beach scene. The top part of the painting is a sky made of oragami paper that is shades of blue and white. Rips in the paper showing the exposed white canvas act as clouds in the sky. A black silhouette of an albatross is suspended in the bottom right portion of the sky. Below the sky is an ocean with a deeper blue in the distance and a lighter blue in the foreground. White paint along the shore implies frothy wave caps. Next to the shore is wet sand painted with a deep brown that blends into a lighter brown and then into the peachy sand further up the beach. /.End ID]

It was a blustery day Saturday on South Forest Beach. Nonetheless, we managed our daily beach walk along the roiling Atlantic, employing the patented Hilton Head method, which goes like this:
First, you determine which way the wind is blowing. Then, you start out by walking against the wind, taking the sheltered sidewalk that runs parallel to the shoreline. Then you take a path down to the beach and finish your walk on the beach, with the wind.
