Heavenly Pearl's Fic Review 2022 - Everything Changes

"Everything Changes" was the first of five fics I wrote for two bingo events, Rare Ships On Bingo and 18OI Bingober (hosted by the 18OI!!! on Ice Discord server).

Summary: When Emil’s coach since childhood unexpectedly announces her decision to quit coaching, Michele suggests his long-distance boyfriend move to Milan to train with him and Sara.

Thoughts: When it came to Rare Ships On Bingo this year, I gave myself an extra challenge by combining it with 18OI Bingober, which meant I had to combine two different themes into one story. Some themes worked together better than others, of course, but I think I did okay combining "Moving Countries" and "Moron!" for this story. This was the shortest fic I wrote this year, and also probably the fastest I wrote, since the plot was very simple. Again, it's…fine. I don't love it, I don't hate it. It's just…meh.

Some part of one of Michele's skate program "Serenade for Two" have been a part of Yuri Plisetsky's skate for the opening of anime.

Least favourite character: Michele Crispino who's nickname is Mickey haha. He maybe a grouch & surley but unlike my GOAT character Mickey Milkovich he's got none of the charm lmao. Also, it's mainly bc he had that Japanese charcter trope of too protective of his sister & that it was pretty insufferable haha. But he is in one of my top ships with another ice skater Emil who is a sunshine.

Least favourite ship: I would say Yuri X Victor X Yurio just really not for me

Reason why I watch it: How relatable it is with dealing with mental struggles & just the layers of each character. It feels so human & encouraging about preserving going after your dreams. The way the character grow & gain understanding of each other. Plus the music is sensational! It's a passion project made by people who love ice skating & have a heartfelt story to tell & it absolutely shines through. I love this series to bits & I would show all my loved ones this series bc it has a special place in my heart ❤️

Why I started watching it: I was late to the train for Yuri on Ice, but one of my best friends recommended it to me & said I would love it & she was right! Became my whole personality in 2017 😆

All of those “first interactions” with Yuri and the other ice skaters make a whole lot more sense when you know about the Banquet. Not that those interactions necessarily stood out as major red flags indicating that we the audience were missing some vital piece of information, but they are odd…

Sala being very friendly and greeting Yuri right off the back. Sure, she’s a friendly person in general, but add in the Banquet, and of course she thinks Yuri is this extroverted and approachable guy.

Chris smacking Yuri on the ass when they “first met,” him being the only one not freaked out by Yuri’s sudden hugging spree, and also him jumping onto Yuri half-naked with Viktor trying to get warm in the beginning of episode 10 - all come across much differently when you learn he and Yuri pole-danced together with just their underwear on.

Of course, he thinks their friendship has no boundaries - look what started it.

Mickey thinking that Yuri comes across as some closeted pervert seemed like such a super harsh and odd thing to think, but I guess I justified it because Mickey is insanely protective over his sister and Yuri’s Short Program is based on Eros and is seductive.

But with the Banquet in mind, yeah no, Mickey thinking that makes so much more sense.

It all just clicks.

My power went out yesterday (again)

So I came up with a bunch of Yuri On Ice pair skate headcanons

Yuuri and Viktor frequently practice simple lifts for their exhibition skates. On one occasion, Mila corrected them by going “no, like this” and just heaved Yurio over her head.

Viktor is definitely of the “but what if I drop you? 🥺” variety while Yuuri is the “You are a professional skater. Land. On. Your. Feet.”

The Crispino twins briefly tried pair skating. They ended up switching back to singles because Mickey was terrified of dropping Sara and Sara preferred skating by herself. However they still continued to think of themselves as a team and heavily relied on each other (this lead to their later codependency). Both of them have tremendous respect toward pair skaters.

Sara was the one who taught Mila how to do lifts. 

After the Grand Prix Final, Sara helped Viktor and Yuuri with their exhibition skate.

The internet understandably exploded after the Grand Prix Final exhibition skates. Videos of both Viktor & Yuuri’s Stammi Vicino and Yuri and Otabek’s Welcome to the Madness received well over a million views. Only one video surpassed them in popularity. It showed Yakov watching the exhibition from the side of the rink and recorded in great clarity as he and proceeding to get increasingly exasperated.
