queer short film: "beirut dreams in color"
queer short cuts is a biweekly newsletter where i share queer & trans short film recommendations. i'm featuring some of my favorite films on tumblr because why not
youtube
lebanon | 2022 | 28 minutes | documentary short audio in english & arabic; english subtitles available
beirut dreams in color, directed by michael collins, is not a happy film, but it is a beautiful and necessary one. the docu-short follows lebanese indie rock band mashrou’ leila, who have, since their inception, made their politics central to their music. their lead singer, hamed sinno, is heralded as the first openly gay rock star in the arab world, and mashrou’ leila played sold-out shows throughout the swana region (southwest asia & north africa) in the 2010s. the film weaves their story together with the tragic story of sarah hegazi, an egyptian queer activist, and with the story of helem, a lebanese lgbtq+ organization led by tarek zeidan, as their community in beirut faced a disaster in 2020. deepa's full review, including content notes at the end - highly recommend looking at the content notes
hamed sinno is on instagram @hamed.sinno. you can also read more about sarah hegazi’s legacy and the community that grieves her.

Anonymity is a liminal space of queer potentiality, between the invisibility we must bear to survive, and the visibility we need to live. It is where we find, heal and love each other as our ancestors have done for generations. While the world will not tell our stories, we must tell them ourselves, even behind closed doors. Outside, the writing is on the wall: we’re here. We’ve always been here. The queers will win the world.

"The arab family today doesn't care about its women as much as it cares about preserving what is between her legs, and the synonym for the word 'woman' has become 'sex', and woman has become the sexual tool, the woman is the 'object' - she is the weakest."

Me laying on the ground today after learning that when the police showed up at Sarah Hegazi’s door to arrest and torture her for raising the rainbow flag she rushed to hide in the bathroom and deleted every messaging app off her phone, thereby protecting all her comrades and friends from the same fate

and happy pride to those who left us before they could see their love and their identities celebrated, to those who fought for it to be celebrated, and to those for the sake of survival are silenced and only watching from afar. I love you. every pride is for you <3

white queers and cishet poc don’t give a singular fuck about the struggle of queer poc in countries where queerness is criminalized. they don’t care when our people die. they don’t mourn with us. it’s been almost three and a half years since sarah hegazi died and I almost broke down hearing her name spoken at a queer muslim event I went to. An egyptian lesbian sharing my ethnicity, sharing my name, killed by her government. they don’t care. they don’t mourn with us.

Three years since Sarah Hegazy. Never stopped thinking about her.
Wanted to share part of a quote from her that stuck with me:
“الانتحار هي جريمة قتل قام بها إناسٌ لن يدانوا في يوم ما. مجتمع كامل شارك في الجريمة.”
“Suicide is a murder committed by people who will never be convicted. An entire community participated in the crime.”

I said what I said. We exist and I’m tired of being told we don’t. (TW Homophobia/Transphobia & death threats)
I love being North African, anyone can tell you I’m a proud Moroccan. But I’m tired, the way we (LGBTQIA+ people) are treat by our North African siblings are abysmal. The outing culture, the abuse, the misgendering, the assault, and the honour killings. Where honestly I see no honour is your honour going to let you into Jannah for taking a life, threatening our lives, for being violent towards us, for harming another human being? No. We just want to live in peace and exist with joy pride and happiness in being North African and LGBTQ+. But that will not happen anytime soon because we still got people sending death threats on social media, people pushing away others from the faith (as if it will get themselves into heaven), we got people like Sarah Hegazi who are tortured by the police and end up taking their lives due to the trauma. So I will remind you again the we exist and we have always existed. And we are proud to be both North African and LGBTQ+. And to my fellow queer and trans siblings we got each other. There are two organisations I personally know of if you want to check them out and support them @imaanlgbtqi who support LGBTQIA Muslims & @moroccan.outlaws.490 who supports LGBTQIA Moroccans. If you know of any other Queer organisations who support North Africans and Muslims please send it my way (either DM or comments) and I’ll compile a file of resources for us as a community to use. If you are able please support me on Ko-Fi I’m trying to save up for some accessibility aids and for survival because at the moment ko-fi and commissions are my only form of income due to disability and injury.
