Mel 🔆, Viktor 🌌, and Jayce 🔥 symbolism

SUN 🔆

Mel's association with the sun is self-evident and still mostly shrouded in mystery, though her love scene with Jayce is notable, which is overlaid with starry imagery, where her silhouette and her freckled face are compared to the cosmos. The sun is also a star. It's just the star that's closest to Runeterra and has the most influence over the world.

Mel and the Hexcore are the POVs of the scene.

Hexcore and starry imagery is more strongly and consistently associated with someone else, though!

STARS 🌟 / THE COSMOS 🌌

Viktor's blue to purple pipeline is real

But seriously, the starry/swirly shapes point toward distant stars, the cosmos, a galaxy. There is no moon in Viktor's night scenes throughout the season, only stars.

Viktor's character regresses as the season goes on (blue to purple, ready to fall into Shimmer-like magenta as his corruption nears its peak).

His hubris opens him up to some kind of corruption by the Hexcore, or by whatever - or whoever - is using the Hexcore as a gateway, like what Jinx points out. Singed as his mentor plants and encourages the lie that Viktor believes, that he's better off alone and that the ends justify the means.

These perfectly ruinous circumstances lead to him getting Sky killed (Sky like sky blue, like Inspiration, lost as Viktor has lost sight of good in his pursuit of great).

In his running scene, Viktor runs not from left to right, filmspeak for progression - he runs from right to left, as though backstepping.

(And also for the Rocky Balboa reference called out in this brilliant post, but hey, I think it all works)

It's also worth laying the foundation that Viktor is a fantasy interpretation of Nikola Tesla, the Serbian-American inventor who was fascinated with electricity, radio signals, the cosmos, and [REDACTED for another post probably lol]

If you've fallen down the rabbit hole of League lore like I have, you might have picked up that peoples and warriors who are sun-worshipers are (at least anciently) tasked with hunting down and destroying Void beings, who are eldritch beings associated with the distant stars, or are Runeterrans constructed by the Void Watchers trapped between realms. The sun fights against interlopers from other dimensions or celestial bodies.

Mel and Viktor have the same ideas about risk and the nature of progress, and they are both technically foreigners living in Piltover and pursuing that progress - in two very different (but complementary) ways. They are most likely the two characters whose literal bodies are celestial, imbued with the Arcane. Their bodies are most likely augmented with magical metals.

Yet the arcane imagery that seems to accompany them respectively are diametrically opposed - Sun vs. Void, possibly. (Also, purple and yellow/gold are opposite or complement colors on the color wheel.)

Whether they wind up working together or whether they clash (as Viktor loses himself) or if it's a mix of both, I think Mel and Viktor are destined to collide in season 2.

So where does this leave Jayce?

FIRE 🔥

Fire for Jayce means more than one thing. The first thing that should come to mind is the fire of the forge. Creation and industry. The legacy and hard work of his family.

However, his FIRST imagery with fire occurs when Elora says "Speak of the devil" and Jayce is framed in flames at Mel's fundraising party.

He's similarly framed in the flames of a Molotov cocktail on the bridge between Piltover and the undercity with Viktor, after he's just called the people of the undercity dangerous.

What I think we're being shown here are Jayce's choices. He can use his talents and influence for good - creation and industry - or he can use them for destruction and oppression. A hammer can create.

A hammer can also be a weapon, a tool of destruction:

Fire can quickly burn and spread out of control.

Hey look, blue all the way to magenta in one scene!

And if you know his original League lore, the reason why his rivalry with [REDACTED] crosses the point of no return - fire and destruction. Yeah.

Jayce is interesting because his point position in the Mel-Viktor-Jayce trifecta makes it tempting to assign celestial imagery to him, too. However, adult Jayce is only present with Hexcore, star, and sun imagery when he is sharing a scene with Viktor or Mel respectively.

The show makes it a point that Mel and Viktor are the reasons he is the Man of Progress at all:

Note that Jayce in the center of his Man of Progress posters is backed by a gear (Viktor) and the sun (Mel). If Viktor had not intervened in episode 2, Jayce would be dead or disenfranchised. If Mel had not intervened in episode 3, then Jayce AND Viktor would have been kicked out of the Academy if not imprisoned or exiled, and Hextech with Jayce and Viktor at the helm would not exist.

(This is reaching, but I like to interpret that the circle + notches in the gear shape are like Viktor's star symbolism, but even if that's the big reach that I think it is, Viktor is a machinist, engineer, and techmaturgist with Artificer parents - the gear definitely represents him on a meta level)

The imagery that I believe is Jayce's and Jayce's alone is that of fire. He is terrestrial, using magic contained within tools the way he has always wanted to bring Hextech to every household, while Mel and Viktor are influenced by magic on a whole other level.

Sure would be a shame if Jayce found a reason to choose the path of destruction and be corrupted further, diverging from Mel and Viktor's core values

Sure would be a shame if Viktor's personal choices had consequences that radiated out further than season 1 and he gets put on a disastrous collision course with everything that Jayce and by extension Piltover hates and fears

Sure would be stressful for us if Arcane decided to be a Greek tragedy about it

Though possibly the most important piece of this picture is how Mel - gold like the sun, gold that doesn't tarnish or rust, gold that is an excellent conductor - has already faced the abyss and said NO to her own corruption:

So googled cavelry cause I was thinking about Maglor’s gap.

Google asked if I wanted to know the most successful cavelry in history and I was like “yeah, why not, I’m a nerd.”

And so I just learned about the Winged Hussars, an elite class of Serbian Mercenaries who fought for Polish and Hungarian lords in the 1600’s, won every battle they fought and already look like they came from a fantasy novel:

Those wings actually served a purpose besides looking badass (and therefore being intimidating, so that is a valid purpose): the wooden frame protects from blows from behind, and the feathers create a sound that spooks enemy horses.

So Maglor the bard warrior cavelry guy absolutely had, if not feathers, like reeds or bells or whistles or all three tuned to create a song that would alarm dark things, not just horses.

They fought with extremely long but hollow metal lances, which were HORRIFYINGLY reported to spear five people in one go.

They became obsolete when fire arms became accurate enough to hit fast moving targets at distance, but until technology advanced to that point they never lost a battle.

So. Headcanon for Maglor and the elves of the gap.

tiptoe  over  broken  needles,  broken  bottles,  crushed  furniture.  fleas  jump  from  wrist  to  wrist  between  the  elder  siblings,  the  twins.  they  share  everything—clothes,  toys,  food,  even  their  suffering.  miodrag  catches  a  cold,  miljana  catches  it  too.  they  both  hold  their  breath  hoping  not  to  sneeze  too  loudly  in  their  own  home.  

when  mihailo  is  born,  they  are  ten  and  things  change.  their  mother  kicks  their  father  out  once  and  for  all.  they  move  into  a  smaller  flat,  mio  and  jana  help  raise  their  younger  brother.  they  baby  him,  though  they  will  never  be  as  close  to  him  as  their  mother  is.  her  unspoiled  son,  her  child  that  their  father  hadn’t  broken.

dysfunction  carves  a  fickle  beast  from  him.  miodrag  enlists  the  second  he  can,  craving  the  stability,  the  routine,  the  absence  of  autonomy.  he  finds  himself  swaddled  by  the  training,  by  the  suffering  that  builds  him  back  up  from  a  tall,  underfed  teenager  to  a  strong,  disciplined  workhorse  of  a  young  man.  he  had  always  been  a  good  fighter,  sure,  but  things  changed  when  he  was  given  a  sense  of  purpose.  

he  comes  back  from  each  deployment  more  subdued,  finds  he  cannot  readjust  to  peace  the  same  way  again,  finds  himself  uncomfortable  with  how  quiet  the  world  is  when  he  isn’t  home.  his  bed  is  too  comfortable  to  sleep  in—he  barely  sleeps  at  all,  in  fact.

mihailo  is  the  reason  he  stays  in  the  end,  a  year  and  a  half,  the  longest  gap  since  he  enlisted.  desperate  for  connection,  the  youngest  child  had  sought  out  their  father  and  found  himself  churning  in  the  drains  of  full  addiction  as  a  result.  miodrag,  miljana,  encircle  each  wrist  and  pull  on  their  brother,  both  halting  their  respective  lives  to  help  him  recover.  he  hates  them  for  it,  at  first.  when  their  father  dies,  he  relapses.  the  cycle  renews.  he  hates  them  for  it.  he  hates  them.  he  hates  them  until  he  can  no  longer  hate  them.  

miodrag  takes  up  a  job  bagging  groceries  in  the  meantime.  peacetime  itches  at  him  like  mites  from  his  childhood  bedroom.  it’s  not  until  he  dives  for  cover  when  a  platter  of  cans  falls  during  one  of  his  shifts  that  he  realizes  how  cutthroat  coping  by  warfare  can  actually  be.  he  sees  a  therapist  for  some  time,  doesn’t  find  it  helpful,  stops  when  he  comes  off  leave.  when  mihailo  is  sober.  

it’s  not  until  he’s  thirty  that  the  suffering  calcifies,  crystallizes,  blooms  out  like  a  sordid  plant. when  a  teammate  tries  to  rouse  him  from  a  particularly  exquisite  nightmare  and  he  simply  snaps.  the  resulting  beatdown  is  of  brutal  proportions,  and  when  he  begins  to  come  down  from  the  panic,  the  terror,  a  new  problem  arises.  he  slips  away  into  the  night,  going  awol.

it  turns  out,  there  is  only  so  many  times  you  can  break  a  man’s  skull  with  your  bare  hands  before  he  dies.  the  manhunt  is  lazy—sas  are  desperate  to  cover  up  the  fact  that  one  of  their  men  went  rogue.  he  is  able  to  slip  through  the  cracks,  unseen.  

his  career  pursuits  are  limited  now.  thirty-one  and  roaming  from  one  violent  job  to  the  next  until  the  jolly rogers  pick  him  up.  he’s  efficient,  military  trained,  only  periodically  neurotic.  he  is  a  useful  tool  for  the  organization  to  utilize,  and  miodrag  likes  the  idea  of  knowing  where  he  stands,  of  a  regimented  life.

Sofija Jovanović - volunteer and sergeant of the Serbian army, Serbian Joan of Arc

When she went to sign up for recruitment, they told her it would be the greatest sin to die so young and beautiful, but that didn't deter her, she showed up again the next day.

When asked why she was here again she said: "I want a rifle and a war schedule! I won't leave without one. If I falter or get scared of a task, kill me... All my people are at war, I don't want to sit at home either."

She received 13 decorations for her heroism after the First World War.

Her grand granddaughter said in an interview about her: < My grandma was a real lady. After the war she wore dresses and high heels, and I never knew how she managed it because she lost half of her foot. She didn't talk much about the war, apart from it being awful, but she said that we all had to give up everything for our country, that was our debt to our fatherland. >

Marko Stjepan Mitrović was the youngest twin son of Halatirnë II (Previous OC) by a Human-Vampire Count Šimun Mitrović of Vinkovci and twin brother of Aiardil Alatarāto (Aeardil Galadrod—First OC), the biological son of Lord Hrávahyalmo Altaluimë (Next OC). [Note: Their birth was the result of the real-life rare occurrence called Heteropaternal Superfecundation, which involved the fertilization of two eggs by two sperms from different fathers.] He was the only Peredhel (if not) who had his vampire lineage and the last scion of the last generation of the Mitrović Family since 1999. Description of the artwork: The original form of Aiarnāro/Marko was described as waist-length, raven-haired with silver streaks (Same as his mother Halatirnë II), clad in blood-red robes, his skin was as pale as either alabaster or porcelain. He holds the Elder wand, which was wielded by Albus Dumbledore (Formerly), Lord Voldemort (briefly), and Harry Potter (after the Battle of Hogwarts). The background was supposed to be black and red gradient and a giant red fires/flames behind him.

Names: His name "Marko Stjepan" was the common Ataressë (Father-name) given by his father Šimun. Aiarnāro (Aearnor/Eärnáro) was his rare Amilessë (Mother-name) means "Sea of Fires/Flames" given by Halatirnë II herself, while his epessë (Aftername) was Undómielo "Evenstar", Elnethīnye "Star of the Evening" or Hesperus "Evening Star".

croatia - it's not easy going first but this is a bad way to do it regardless. already the woke agenda has us singing about anxiety attacks. if you are prone to anxiety get off the stage and let real warriors conquer the hearts of evropa. cyprus - many have said this before but i think cypriots should launch missiles at ankara just to see what would happen. singer is very serbian looking with the ironed long hair, very 2008 romcom looking music video (complimentary), forgettable song, thus has got to be someone's niece. mid/10

ireland - thank you god for making our enemies this embarrassing. i just know she had a self harm tumblr blog in 2013. very sincerely sending this to eurovision is comparable in national humiliation to the treaties of trianon and versailles. 30 year old antisemitic pagan themlet/10

lithuania - this is nothing. lithuania/10

poland - kinda of a normal pop song, i can see myself hearing this on the radio while stuck at a red light. good to see a weird looking woman. jeszcze polska nie zginęła/10

serbia - #JUSTICE FOR BRESKVICA. zorja or zejna or breskvica would have mopped the floor with her. this will lose and it will deserve it, hopefully all the PZE jury members including sajsi will be executed in a public square. bad/10

ukraine - hate to say it but the loathsome ruthenians have once again sent a good contestant. if my last name was Shemaieva i would simply not use Heil as an artistic name. i can hardly believe i'm saying this but i think it would be better without the fat girl rapping. critical support for ruthenian autonomous oblast/10

australia - my opinion is colored by the fact that i was viewing the music video, which is a consistent two and a half minute face closeup of the white guy cumming. the song itself is not bad, but i could do without the white guy cumming, actually. australia gets a pass this year/10

azerbaijan - you can always count on the iranic people to sneak in subtle references to sun-worship. oldest trick in the book. considering this was the last song picked, this was maybe not worth the wait. don't want to doxx anyone but one of the backup dancers looks like a beloved tumblr user. eeh/10

finland - random xD WAFFLES. the "what does the fox say" candidate of the year, and of course its from the turbo-autistic finns. total opposite of tact and taste. the west has fallen to its far-easternmost asiatic enemy (the mongols (finns)). beyond repair/10

iceland - based for sending an older woman. this is pretty good, nothing much to add. will maybe listen to the icelandic version. top quartile/10

luxembourg - israeli broad with skinny arms singing in french ? *wiping the sweat from my brow*. finally something worthwhile out of europe's last grand duchy. am yisroel chai/10

moldova - pleasant surprise out of the illegitimate romanian province of moldova. dignified in an atmosphere where others have been deliberately embarrassing. not impaling anyone's heart/10

portugal - this is nothing. portugal would benefit from being brazil's european vassal state. meu curaçao :(/10

slovenia - the best of the three of this exact performer that we've seen, not that that's very high praise. eeh/10

germany - pleasant surprise in an otherwise very mid year. not the worst guderian i know. germany/10

sweden - i can feel the martin x marcus x reader spam in the tags already. usually they at least send something that's listenable under normal circumstances but not eurovision-material,but not even that this time around. as always, marg bar sweden/10

united kingdom - (watching the official music video) lol that's probably 4k/mo in london. nobody cares about the failstate of the united cringedom, they should have been excised from the contest when they left the eu. nice trainspotting references in the clip tho. bleh/10

final conclusion - overall very disappointing year, luxembourg stands in a separate category, even without the ethnonarcissism. germany, moldova, iceland, ukraine are okay but nothing to be thrilled about. the plague of appealing to jury votes at the cost of anything interesting is crushing this competition. seeing what got passed up in serbia instead of teya dora makes one wonder what the situation is like in other countries. help me, zejna. zejna, help me. i hope semi 2 will be better but there's not many heavy hitters
