So I copied this over from my Discord rants last night - a brief text-based analysis of Floyd Lawton's character depth.

Re. Possessing no outward feelings except sarcasm and general assholery, suppresses everything else, subconscious belief that we deserve to be punished, chronic intimacy issues probably stemming from how fucked up his family is, actively suicidal with a death wish, debatably has 0 redeeming qualities on the surface, generally homicidal [bitch me too to all of this!!!!]. Despite everything, Floyd cares. He wouldn't be around other people by choice if he didn't. Waller has canonically offered him the chance to walk several times, as he's served multiple sentences. He wouldn't have damn near agreed with Peter/Ragdoll saying the Secret Six were his family if he didn't. Wouldn't have manipulated a doctor at gunpoint into telling a young woman who he at that point barely knew that she didn't accidentally cause her father's end stage lung cancer re. Lori/Black Alice. Also yeah his flings with Jeannette, Michelle, etc. were a lot more than just sex if you read Deadshot: Bulletproof or Gail Simone's Secret Six series, there's actual romance and protective feelings there. Susan Lawton who knows, it's hard to say and I really think what they had completely fell apart after their son was murdered, + her character wasn't super developed. In any case it's the classic machismo thing of "showing human emotion makes you weak and a liability" coupled with what I'm damned sure is PTSD. The reaper follows Lawton like a shadow. re. The Get Out of Hell card, he specifically steals it because he doesn't want to watch the Six tear each other apart over it. Also re. Floyd cares, 1987 Suicide Squad: he went with Digger to Digger's mother's funeral as a plus one and stuck around without even being asked. Meanwhile the entire time he's claiming not to like Captain Boomerang.

And eventually, Floyd breaks out of that hard shell a little. It takes fucking RAGDOLL calling him [and Catman] out over it, and it's literally the final issue of the 2008 Secret Six series, but he's genuinely concerned and pained when Catman gets shot. For reference. If the guy who replaced all his joints with cybernetics and banged his own sister calls you out and makes an actually good point while doing so, that is both concerning and something you should probably listen to. Earlier in the run he also cares enough about Thomas to ask him personally to chaperone a date with Jeannette because Floyd is legitimately scared she'll take advantage of him, also. Is that referring to physically? Sexually? Emotionally? Probably all three. But nothing happens. Like. Damn. There's not a lot of content that goes out of its way to specifically show that a lot of Floyd's generally abrasive personality is an act. AS IT STANDS given pre-Crisis on Infinite Earths Floyd Lawton, lately DC has made him far too sympathetic for a homicidal contract killer. There is a very fine line between "likeable asshole" and "this is watered down to the point where sometimes it's but the vapor of a character". We need a balance, DC. And I hope, one day, someone can write that again.

Jude's 33rd Birthday Wishlist Wishtravaganza

It's the most wonderful time of the year. My birthday.

I've been so busy this past year with my work and my writing, and with so much I have to do this month in regards to my career and the holidays I wasn't able to really think much about this so I stuck with mostly my usual faves and a couple of new ones.

So if anyone wants to write or draw something for me for the most important day of the year, by all means. I'll have a kink one later, but right now I also have to work on holiday fic prompts for people.

For those interested in doing anything WG or BBM related for me, I'm just reusing the list from last year. I realized I've been making practically the same list every year and that's a waste of energy on my end.

Arsenal Family: Roy Harper and his daughter Lian, alongside Lian's half-brother Tommy Blake Jr. adopted into the family. A concept that was never included in the comics proper because Roy and Lian never found out about Tommy.

Berzerker (X-Men Evolution): Ray Crisp, an updated version of one of the Morlocks added to the Xavier Institute as one of the New Mutants. He was said to be a hothead, but aside from a briefly seen rivalry with Sunspot, was admittedly rather mellow. He was implied to have a past with Evo's version of the Morlocks.

Black Orchid (Justice League): A human/plant hybrid created from the DNA of Susan Thorne. She was the last surviving Orchid after Carl Thorne slaughtered the rest. Taking the name "Suzy," she went off with her older sister Flora. After going on various misadventures of her own, Suzy grew and eventually took the Black Orchid name when Flora was killed for trying to wipe out humanity.

Bolt (Teen Titans Academy): An indigenous Australian speedster who lost her legs due to the actions of her criminal parents. Amanda Waller got her into the United States and a pair of prosthetic legs, but Alinta refused to comply when Waller demanded she act as her soldier. Was last seen as a member of the short-lived Teen Titans Academy, but hasn't appeared since.

Catholic Girl (Xombi): As her name indicates, Catholic Girl is a Catholic school girl who also happens to be a superhero. She generates light and energy, force fields, and can fly. She's a sidekick to the telepathic Nun of the Above and a friend to Xombi.

Coagula (Doom Patrol): Kate Godwin, a transgender woman with the ability to generate energy capable of coagulating and dissolving substances. Joined the Doom Patrol after defeating the Codpiece, becoming a sisterly figure to Dorothy Spinner and entering into an emotional relationship with Robotman.

Dark Angel (Wonder Woman): A demonic witch obsessed with making Donna Troy as utterly miserable as possible. She initially served as the Anti-Monitor's Harbinger, but overcame his control and fled into the Multiverse. Has fought Wonder Woman, the Justice Society, and the Titans on various occasions.

Erina Goldsmith (Variable Geo): A Japanese-American woman who spent years being bullied for her mixed heritage. She now owns and operates a restaurant called The Rival, where she and her staff dress as Playboy Bunnies. She uses a cigarette lighter to focus her energy, and keeps her tucked between her bust while fighting.

Forte Drums (Sleepless Domain): Debbie, the drummer of Team Forte. She's the cute one with the bowtie, thinks she can get away with anything. She's notoriously ranked lowest on popularity charts in the past, but she's the most popular in my heart.

Foxfire (Squadron Supreme): A criminal with the ability to create a bioluminescent energy capable of rotting anything, Olivia Underwood was brainwashed into becoming a superhero by the Squadron Supreme. The brainwashing was eventually undone, but Olivia couldn't bring herself to betray the Squadron because she'd fallen in love with Doc Spectrum and liked being a hero. She was stabbed in the back by the Mink after killing Nighthawk.

Harry and Alex Altman (Goosebumps #45: Ghost Camp): Brothers spending the summer at rustic Camp Spirit Moon. They're disturbed by the various "pranks" the veteran campers like to pull due to how violent they are. It takes a while before they discover the camp's dark secret...

Hourman III (Justice Society of America): Matthew Tyler, a robotic inheritor of the Hourman created in the 853rd Century. He travelled back in time and became a member of both the Justice League and the Justice Society. He lived with former JLA sidekick Snapper Carr to better learn about himself and humanity.

Hypnotia (Iron Man: The Animated Series): A villainess with hypnotic abilities who worked under the Mandarin. Among his entourage of lackeys, Hypnotia was the only one with any degree of competency and had the respect of her boss. Dreadknight and Blacklash often fought for her attention, while she was infatuated with Tony Stark.

Kim/Taurus (Zodiac Starforce): One of the most recent recruits of the new version of Zodiac Starforce. Kim's the sturdiest and most physical member of the team and actively enjoys fighting evil. She's in a committed relationship with her boyfriend Josh, which her teammates find either adorable (Savannah, Lily) or nauseating (Molly). Her dream's to be a pro wrestler.

Joker’s Daughter (Batman): Duela Dent's a confused young woman who flips between good and evil depending on how she feels. She introduced herself to Robin and Batgirl by pulling off a series of "crimes" under several different guises in order to demonstrate her skills to join the Teen Titans. Though she's claimed to be both Joker's daughter and Two-Face's daughter, the truth's more complicated thanks to extensive mental trauma she's suffered over the years.

La Pucelle (Magical Girl Raising Project): A magical girl whose real name is Souta Kishibe. Souta's always been a fan of magical girl stories but kept his hobby a secret from most. One day he was blessed with power by the mobile game Magical Girl Raising Project, gaining the ability to transfer into a female form and wielding a sword that can grow bigger or smaller at his command. As La Pucelle, he fights alongside his childhood best friend Koyuki, a.k.a. Snow White.

Oursonette (War Bears): A 1940s comic book heroine created by Alain "Al" Zurakowski, a werebear who aided the Canadian army during WWII.

Purple Tigress (Fox Comics): A minor Golden Age comic book heroine who only made two appearances in printed media before falling into the public domain. Heiress Anita "Ann" Morgan has eyes like a cat and dresses herself up as "her jungle namesake." Somehow no one recognizes her as the Purple Tigress despite her never wearing a mask.

Radietta Fanbelt/White Racer (Carranger): A young woman from another planet who fancies herself the biggest fan of the Carrangers, to the point she styles herself as their hypothetical sixth member, White Racer.

Rainbow Girl (Legion of Super-Heroes): A heroine rejected from the Legion of Super-Heroes, she later joined the Legion of Substitute-Heroes. She taps into the Emotional Spectrum, but her lack of control means she suffers from erratic moodswings.

Sailor Jupiter (Sailor Moon): Do I even have to say anything?

Serena del Mar (Wave Race: Blue Storm): My favorite, go-to racer from the Wave Race franchise.

Softkore (Local Man): A member of the extreme antihero team Third Gen. Softkore was a former R&B singer before her bod was coated in an experimental polymer.

Supergirl (Mae/Linda): Matrix was an artificial being from an alternate world. As she struggled to understand if she was human in any sense, she didn't hesitate to sacrifice her life to save a young woman named Linda Danvers. The two became merged, and due to Mae's sacrifice they gained new powers as an earth-born angel.

Talon (Spider-Man: The New Animated Series): An heiress named Cheyanne led a double life as the thrillseeking Talon, a thief who enjoyed stealing things which had sentimental value for their owners. In her civilian life she was slowly becoming a good friend to Harry Osborn and Mary Jane Watson, while as Talon her hatred of Spider-Man's patronizing attitude grew.

Tiara (Shamanic Princess): One of the earlier dark magical girls of the 1990s from the six episode OVA series Shamanic Princess. Tiara's a warrior from the Guardian World sent to retrieve its source of power, the Throne of Yord. With her new familiar Japolo, Tiara finds herself up against familiar faces as she realizes the struggle she's in is more complex than she assumed. She wants to do the right thing, but what IS the right thing?

Tormenta (Mahoney’s): A demonic sorceress connected to the Ebon Realms and a regular at Mahoney's bar for supervillains.

Fun fact, my interest in the character sparked Rich Carrington and Brian S. Dawson to use her more.

Tsumugi Wakana (Magia Record): A magical girl who loves enjoying good food and supporting good cooks. She made her wish for the sake of better supporting Manaka Kurumi, another magical girl who is also a talented chef. Tsumugi's wish gave her refined taste buds, allowing her to write deeper critiques by picking up on subtle distinctions in every meal she samples. Her weapons are a trident which splits apart to form a giant knife and fork.

Vickie Wheilson (Graveyard School): Vickie Wheilson, the neon-colored second top boardhead of Graveyard School alongside her more serious cousin Skate McGraw as THE skateboarder.

Wakaba Shinohara (Revolutionary Girl Utena): She is all that is good in the world.

Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas and right-wing Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia on Thursday introduced legislation that would prevent a federal agency from banning gas stoves.

Cruz and Manchin's bill to preempt the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) from banning gas stoves—titled the Gas Stove Protection and Freedom Act and described by progressive advocacy group Food & Water Watch as "absurd"—comes even though the agency says it has no plans to implement such a prohibition.

Climate and public health advocates celebrated last month after CPSC Commissioner Richard Trumka Jr. told Bloomberg News that gas stoves are "a hidden hazard" and suggested that new ones should be banned.

However, as Reuters reported Thursday, Trumka "walked back those comments after conservatives and energy industry groups seized on them as a way to criticize the Biden administration for allegedly overreaching with its climate and environmental policy agenda."

Food & Water Watch observed that while "there is currently no plan" to ban gas stoves, "there is substantial research documenting the hazards associated with the air pollution" the methane-powered appliances create.

A widely shared recent study found that 12.7% of childhood asthma cases in the U.S. can be tied to indoor air pollution caused by gas stoves. The findings bolstered calls from environmental justice advocates and public health experts to prohibit the sale of new gas stoves and expedite the switch to cleaner and safer electric ones, but the CPSC has yet to propose regulatory action.

"Manchin is doing his part to fuel the ridiculous right-wing panic over a nonexistent war on gas stoves," Food & Water Watch policy director Jim Walsh said Thursday. "But his intent behind this legislation is serious: to inhibit climate action and undermine agencies charged with protecting public health and safety—all in the interest of propping up his fossil fuel funders."

"As state and local governments are increasingly looking to turn away from gas in new construction—moves that will improve air quality and public health, and reduce climate pollution—Sen. Manchin continues looking backward," said Walsh.

Manchin is the top congressional recipient of cash from the fossil fuel industry, which has fought aggressively against increasingly popular campaigns to outlaw gas stoves at the state and local levels.

However, the coal baron who leads the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee is far from alone in his defense of planet-heating and illness-inducing gas stoves.

As The Washington Post reported Thursday, Natural Allies for a Clean Energy Future—a nonprofit group founded by a half-dozen gas companies—"has enlisted prominent Democratic politicians and pollsters to help enhance gas' reputation among liberal voters."

Former Sens. Mary Landrieu (D-La.) and Heidi Heitkamp (D-N.D.) and former Rep. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio) are among those going to bat for the fracking and gas utility industries.

"Natural Allies is backed by TC Energy, the Canadian pipeline giant behind the controversial Keystone XL project, and Southern Company, one of the biggest U.S. utilities," the Post reported. "Launched shortly before the 2020 election, the group is led by Susan Waller, a former executive at the pipeline firm Enbridge."

For reasons of brain fog and boredom I have been rewatching Greys which has reawakened my Kevin McKidd interest so I went and found some of his earlier films which can only be found in poor copies on YouTube but hurray you can watch them at least

16 Years of Alcohol the Richard Jobson (The Skids) written and directed memorial to his brother. It’s a weird mix of art house vignettes and skinhead culture that doesn’t really have a narrative but has wonderfully shot moments and the most gorgeous voiceover narration from Kevin McKidd. It also has Susan Lynch looking hot as ever although in a chronically unwritten part in the midst of a very male dominated movie. It’s worth a watch but you have to be in the right mood for it. I would happily have the narration piped into my brain 24/7 though. We were robbed when they made Owen Hunt American.

The other film I found was Bedrooms and Hallways. It’s full of queer lovies from British acting and has a questioning Con O’Neill in it for you OFMD fans. Julie Graham is deliciously gorgeous in it. Tom Holland is flamboyantly gay. Simon Callow is confusingly straight 😄 It feels quite dated compared to movies these days but I laughed a lot and would have happily seen a short series of the characters. It reminded me of a more dated version of Crashing the Phoebe Waller Bridges show with Jonathan Bailey in it. In 1998 there was limited queer rep on British tv. We had a little bit on This Life but Queer as Folk hadn’t been aired yet so for its time it was pretty groundbreaking. I have two big complaints about the film. Kevin has an English accent (his accent work is really so good and he’s perfect in it but ew, English) and that it ends with his gay character getting off with a woman. It is a film that pokes fun at but also explores men’s emotions and sexuality and I can see why they made the choice for him to explore that relationship but I want queer wins in the meagre queer rep we got please and thank you.

Now can they please kill off Owen Hunt so Kev is forced to make more Scottish shows. Ta

Due to the high value, Wall Street professionals keep the details of market mechanics close to their chest. The best way to learn about market mechanics is to listen to the podcasts in Arora Ambassador Club. Producer Price Index came hotter than expected. Here are the details: Headline PPI came at 0.5% vs. 0.3% consensus. Core PPI came at 0.3% vs. 0.2% consensus. Wall Street has been positioned for better than expected PPI and CPI. Today PPI has dashed bulls’ hopes, but they are hanging tough, trusting that market mechanics will drive the stock market higher irrespective of the data. CPI will be released tomorrow at 8:30am ET. Les filles dévêtues l’emportent toujours

Vous commencez sans nul doute à connaître le refrain : le grand public porte sur les modèles d’hier et d’aujourd'hui un regard très déformé, qui fait des modèles vivants des individus presque exclusivement féminins et qui auraient sans arrêt des aventures avec les artistes, alors même que l’Histoire et la sociologie nous racontent tout autre chose. Le caractère frappant de cette image pervertie du modèle vivant réside dans les conditions de son émergence.

Condition numéro 1 : la rapidité de cette émergence. L’essayiste Susan Waller avance qu’il ne fallut qu’une trentaine d’années, de 1840 à 1870, pour que se cristallise cette image populaire. Au regard de l’irruption des modèles dans les colonnes des journaux à la fin du XIXe et de la popularité de la bohème de l’entre-deux-guerres, l’on peut se montrer plus généreux et tirer le trait d’un mouvement de popularisation s’achevant vers 1930. Au-delà, l’histoire des modèles a continué de s’écrire, mais de manière plus discrète, et la perception du métier s’est figée comme un fossile dans l’ambre. Donc, alors que l’histoire du métier de modèle vivant s’étend sur au moins 2500 ans, c’est l’espace d’un siècle, seul, qui en a construit la perception par la population, ce qui est encore plus frappant quand on le traduit en graphique.

Modèles de l’Antiquité gréco-romaine, modèles de la Renaissance, modèles de l’époque moderne et contemporaine... cent années auront suffi à tous les ranger dans le tiroir des jeunes nymphes qui couchent. Quand on sait que, jusqu'à la fin de l’époque moderne en Occident, l’activité de modèle était demeurée une affaire prioritairement masculine, on voit le hic. Néanmoins, même si cent années peuvent n’être qu’un fugace morceau d’histoire pour une civilisation, cela suffit pour forger tout un imaginaire. Regardez donc les artistes : leur image populaire actuelle doit beaucoup au XIXe. L’image du génie solitaire, pauvre et tourmenté, coincé dans sa mansarde émerge à cette période. Et c’est un gros pan de tout notre imaginaire romanesque au sens large qui est l’enfant du XIXe. Le cinéma actuel puise encore beaucoup à cette source. C’est que la littérature et l’art ont connu une floraison et une diffusion sans pareille à cette époque, posant ainsi de nombreux jalons de notre imaginaire collectif. Et parmi les innombrables sujets à portée de main en ce XIXe siècle effervescent, celui du modèle vivant a paru suffisamment digne d’intérêt aux écrivains et journalistes pour qu’ils s’en saisissent, tout en le remodelant suivant leurs propres conceptions et celles de leur temps, qui sont ainsi devenues les nôtres.

Condition numéro 2 : les filles nues Cela coulait de source... Si tout le monde, public et littérateurs, s’est mis à s’intéresser aux modèles vivants, ce n’est point prioritairement par amour de l’art et de la sociologie... Jusqu’au début du XIXe, la production de nus masculins était supérieure à celle des nus féminins, et cela durait depuis l’Antiquité. Dans les académies d’Europe, sauf exceptions, il n’y avait pas de poseuses et celles-ci, quoique devenant progressivement plus recherchées au fil de l’évolution des mœurs, étaient demeurées minoritaires même dans les ateliers privatifs. Le résultat fut que, à l’exception de quelques anecdotes sur la Fornarina et la belle Vespucci largement fardées de légende, le métier de modèle n’intéressait pas grand monde hors du milieu artistique. Parce que des hommes peignant-sculptant d’autres hommes, voilà bien 2500 ans que les colporteurs d’anecdotes s’en tamponnent avec une constance jamais démentie. Mais le contexte des révolutions sociétales et industrielles en cours au XIXe favorisa l’explosion de la production artistique, en même temps qu’il fut le décor d’une autre révolution, qui consista à ce que des jeunes filles viennent en masse poser nues dans les ateliers, et ce de manière officielle. Cette belle synchronisation des horloges fut le ferment d’un intérêt nouveau pour les modèles vivants, mais uniquement de genre féminin, bien évidemment. Du travail des modèles féminines, les littérateurs tirèrent une matière première applicable aussi bien aux fables moralistes, au romantisme qu’au réalisme social. Ces gens de plume, qui gravaient dans leurs pages les préjugés de leur temps et ne savaient généralement parler des poseuses que sous un angle restreint, souvent sentimental voire sexuel, participèrent activement à la constitution de l’image populaire du modèle en tant que jeune femme bohème et hautement sexualisée. Et il ne fallut pas compter sur les artistes pour contrer cette image, bien au contraire.

Moralité : les femmes nues l’emportent toujours, sur tout.
