can't lie, Bryan Hill's Batman & The Outsiders is actually pretty bad lol I had to re-read it a few times for this Signal Tape addition and it's not great. like it reads like he thinks he's writing something significantly "cooler" than what he's actually producing. his writing of Katana and Cassandra Cain are both pretty abysmal. Katana feels like a stereotype with a throbbing boner for Black Lightning, just bleating "hai" and "raijin" incessantly, and Cass' "broken english" feels more like a crutch for an underdeveloped caricature of her character rather than any kind of trait that informs her character. on the other side Duke and Black Lightning feel toothless and hoed out. Black Lightning gets some flashy moments that are sometimes legitimately cool but outside of those he spends the entire series downplaying himself while all but begging Batman to validate him and convince him that he's just as cool as he is. but at least Black Lightning has his moments, Duke is the weakest link and the person with the least agency on the team. Duke loses every confrontation he's involved in unless Cass is there to literally fight for him. in fact, Duke appears to actually hold her back because just about the only times Cass loses a fight is if Duke's fighting alongside her. Duke even gets kidnapped and becomes a literal damsel in distress. then he gets these new powers but they don't really fit his character and they're functionally useless whenever he uses them. This series reads like the only person Bryan Hill was interested in writing was Batman while everyone else feels like Batman's hangers-on that are all aspiring to be as totally rad and sexy as he is. the shit's an absolutely tragic read for a Duke fan ngl. maybe it's just me but I just think writing a book with a team full of people of color then having all the women read like shallow accessories to the men while having the men read like lapdogs to the singular white male character is weird and bad.

One of my favorite things I really like in outsiders/urban legends is how katana and B.Lightning get along and how they distrust/ dont like bruce lol.
But that one part where duke and tatsu are talking about them training with shiva she seems so annoyed with the turn of events. Like a mom looking out for her kids, and Jeff being a teacher is even worse that disapproval has to be really strong smh.
aka duke keeps getting parents he didn't ask for (╯▽╰ )

There's a lot of old and obscure heroes here along with some better known ones but I gotta know, is that Batwing?! Batwing was one of the few good things about CW Batwoman

You've mentioned captain comet and katana are the headverse's other world's finest. Is that purely in terms of a powered/non-powered partnership or they friends similar to superman/batman?
Also, what is katana up to in the headverse in general?
They're friends! They met fighting Black Hole together but maintained a social relationship after. On a meta level, it's definitely a play on the existing Superman/Batman archetypes, but Adam is (ironically) more alien than Clark in a lot of ways and Tatsu veers closer to supernatural elements, with Adam reminding her of many of the yokai she met when she was being mentored by Wind Dragon.
It's spread across a couple posts since I keep redesigning her, but Tatsu becomes a superhero much earlier in the headverse, as Katana to Wind Dragon (Asami Koizumi) as Samurai. She meets Batman during this period, borrowing from her Beware the Batman characterization, which leads her to the Outsiders.
The Outsiders themselves are a bit more complicated since Batman's group isn't the first or only team, but Tatsu eventually becomes the leader of all Outsiders as a whole, as a sort of counterpart to Diana and Talia as head of their organizations.

When Emiko Queen showed up in my feed as Black Canary and Red Arrow, I got so excited that Emiko Queen was gonna be an Asian vigilante/superhero not based around any ninja/samurai/assassin background ….
Her mother was an assassin and according to the wiki she was ‘trained from birth’ to be ‘the perfect killing machine’.
Tbh I don’t know anything else about her as of rn, so I WILL look more into it tmrw and maybe the assassin background is more distant!! But first, live, reaction 💙
Still love these characters though

And so it is time for The Post. A somewhat disjointed metaanalysis of the author's Floyd Lawton and Jonathan Crane interpretations re. their interactions with women. [sexual assault tw]
Let's get the great big elephant in the room out of the way, because I can never just say something and then let it be. My version of Deadshot is a CSA survivor. Scarecrow likely is too, knowing the reality of growing up Asian in America, but he certainly doesn't remember anything beyond vague flashes that he's never quite sure are real or not. Still, Crane has been assaulted plenty later in life, leading to his lower jaw borderline disintegrating. Specifically, Floyd's mother and grandmother sexually abused him, however briefly the latter was in his life. There was quite a bit of emotional abuse going on as well, which is...to be expected, really. Crane mostly just remembers Mingzhu's snide commentary, as well as being forced to strip and critiqued for his body; or, at least that's what he claims publicly. They "do not" get flashbacks, they remember bad things vividly and with a great deal of apathy. They've both been seen as nothing but meat, and I honestly think they both hate that when they have the mind to be vaguely rational about it. During particularly bad episodes they're a little more self-destructive than usual, though the difference is neglible for the most part. Floyd absolutely becomes a reckless driver, though. +while my interpretation of Floyd does not "pass" wholly as a pacific islander, AAPI fetishization is real and unlike Floyd, Crane cannot obscure or escape his identity. They are used to being objectified, and I'd personally say it's reasonable both are wary around women. Floyd just does not show this publicly, though both men will occasionally make unsolicited and potentially objectifying comments in much the same manner as they've been objectified. Note that they do not hate women, it's just harder for them to form deeper relationships with women. Also, Crane is gay how I write him; it's difficult to say whether or not he would have been bi/pansexual if what had happened to him didn't happen, as he does have a very fulfilling QPP with my friend Vio's version of Katana [Tatsu Toro]. Which honestly is a damned miracle, the guy is neutral towards any woman at best and at worst can get physically violent.
