Alright, I'll say it: Jack Harkness and the Doctor's relationship is possibly the most fleshed out/complicated dynamic in Doctor Who and that is INCLUDING the master/doctor relationship. Seriously, think about it:

the fact that when they meet jack is presented as sleazy con man and the doctor makes him brave- makes him good

but that they are both willing to die for rose as long as she is safe

and then she comes back and dooms them both to live (even though jack has already died for her and the doctor WILL die for her)

(ninerosejack is canon and you cannot convince me otherwise)

but then the doctor sees jack as immortal as someone he COULD spend the rest of his life with

and instead of embracing it like you'd think he would because he is so wrecked by people leaving him/being left by him the doctor RUNS bc the Doctor is so scared of jack of what he means of what he is

jack ends up abandoned in dalek dust goes back in time to find the doctor suffers a hundred years alone/being tortured but STILL WAITS

(screw amy being the girl who waited or rory being the boy who waited- Jack Harkness is the boy who waited and he did it FIRST)

Jack finds out that he was abandoned. that the man that he loves HATES the sight of him. that the doctor would rather have a genocidal murderer than have him

and so Jack gets the hell out of dodge to go to a man who DOES love him

and don't get me wrong Jack loves Ianto and Jack DOES remember Ianto until he dies as the Face of Boe don't forget that (protecting Novice Hame from the virus as he couldn't Ianto

BUT AFTER EVERYTHING THE DOCTOR HAS DONE TO JACK JACK STILL LOVES THEM

Jack still considers five billion years cursed to never die to be BETTER than the alternative: dying a young time-agent-turned-con-man

Jack has more reason than any other companion save maybe Amy to hate the Doctor & yet spends 20 years in jail to rescue Thirteen still LOVES HER

AND AFTER FIVE BILLION YEARS HE ORGANIZES THAT FIRST MEETING ON SATELLITE FIVE HE ORGANIZES 9/ROSE'S FIRST DATE

jack harkness is a living ghost a reminder of the doctor's failures a physical fixed point and yet he still loves the girl who cursed him and the time lord that turned him into the kind of person that would give his dying breaths to protect the last of humanity in a dying city and tell the doctor that he is not alone

because fuck it, YANA was a warning but also a reminder a final gift

jack had been there all along, a ghost an echo a PROMISE

there is no more human character than jack harkness

i do think a lot about the master & the doctor both deliberately seeking out other regenerations of each other than whoever they’re mostly interacting with. especially when they just want a chat, a moment’s truce, something that could be called comfort if they dared to put it into words. easier to do those things when, well, they’re still enemies, but the hurts are farther apart in time. ‘i’m your future, you’re my past, we’re both still hurting each other where we come from, but that’s a different me and a different you, and tonight, can’t we just play a game or share a bed for old time’s sake?’ you know?

and it drove him mad. the thought of it alone made his breathing hitch and his skin itch. no, crawl. all at once, no controlling it. all he was, was because of her. it's no wonder all she ever did was run, it's what she'd been doing before she could remember.

and all she was, well there's no denying, it was because of him. a lifetime ago, sure, but him nonetheless. back when he was a proper time lady. its sickening, really.

she was nothing more than a pet. a faithful and loyal companion to the one who ran. a human. that's all she was, that's all he'd planned for. a clever, hopeful one, easily compulsed to save all of her lives, over and over. and all because he'd given them a proper push back then. a push that was hard enough to cause his oldest friend to kill himself for the duration of half the universe's existence. all for a human.

but she was much more than that now. all that time, all that space, all that life and the lack of a-

heartbeat.

it'd be a damned mistake to call her a human anymore.

no.

she was more than that, and she's lived longer than he could possibly assume. a product of his own actions and she's just as strong as he was. just as mad. just as reckless and just as hopeless.

she was truly an impossible girl.

and he was nothing, if not tempted, to see just how impossible she could be.

It’s a good thing that The Master went batsh*t during The End of Time around Ten rather than almost any other Doctor, can you imagine many of the others having any real sympathy for him?? Honestly? (By that I mean enough so to actually try to help him and forgive him.) Ten was lonely and had his soft spot for the Master amplified, the others, who knows how they would’ve reacted. It’d vary of course, but just think about it lol.

#like six would have zero patience or respect left for him #thirteen? forget it!#five? not a chance #seven could be arguable #but probably would not put up with him and take him down #MAYBE three would actually try to help him get better three wasn’t as soft as ten but it’s just possible #doctor who #the end of time #the master #simm!master #tenth doctor #normally i’d say no sympathy from seven but the events of survival leave me uncertain #like he wouldn’t try to take the master with him but he put up with a lot of implications about cheetah!master and still tried to reason #with him for them to stop fighting so they wouldn’t destroy the planet in the process #of course an alterior motive #but vibes??#and my unrealistic amount of faith in the doctor to give the master a chance #even with the tiniest amount of so called evidence #bonus: imagine the first doctor trying to keep up with simm flying around like a bastard #old man’s got some fight in him but running over rough terrain??

I'm surprised there isn't more people who are fans of both simm master and dhawan master. They're both characters who are terrible and awful and easy to hate yet feel so completely heartbreaking

#doctor who #i suspect that it may be because a lot of simm master fans arent actually fans of the master but fans of thr masters #relationship with the doctor #and spydoc is not an easy ship to ship #ten was overly forgiving and thirteen isnt willing to forgive at all #twelve was a complicated middle ground that always left Missy in limbo but its the closest they got to a good relationship

Scene twelve is of the Doctor cocking the gun. Lyrics say, “I think you’re.” Scene thirteen is of the Doctor pointing the gun at the Time Lords, who’re off screen, slightly to the right of the viewer, while the Master stands behind him. Lyrics say, “Changing.” Scene fourteen is of the Master while the Doctor points the gun at him. Lyrics say, “Don’t worry, you don’t gotta.” Scene fifteen is of the Doctor pointing the gun at the Master, but saying, “Get out of the way.” This appears on screen. Lyrics say, “Stay the same.”

Scene sixteen is the Doctor firing the gun at the diamond, causing an explosion which sends both him and the Master to the ground. Lyrics say, “Can we talk about this later?” Scene seventeen is the Doctor looking at the Time Lord. The Master than appears behind him and says, “Get out of the way.” This appears on screen. Then the Doctor turns to look at the Master. Lyrics say, “Your voice is driving me, driving me insane.”

Scene eighteen is the Doctor collapsed on the floor of the mansion, right after he fell from the sky. The Master stands behind the Doctor with his arms outstretched. Lyrics say, “Driving me insane.” Scene nineteen is of the Doctor running up a metal ramp in the wasteland during the day. Lyrics say, “Driving me insane.” Scene twenty is the Master running in the wasteland during the day. Lyrics say, “Driving me insane.” Scene twenty-one is the Doctor running in the wasteland during the day. Lyrics say, “Oh, it’s driving me insane.” Scene twenty-two is the Master firing a bolt of electricity into the Master’s chest in the wasteland at night.
