A/n: These are just some headcanons since im trying to get used to writing for mao mao but nonetheless i hope you enjoy anon!! (He/Him) Pronouns will be found in the mini fic excerpt at the end of each section. There are Two (2) sections to this mess :)) and when i call it a mess, i mean it's a mess as this was all on a whIM-

First meeting and recognition of feelings

Badgerclops was undoubtedly the least unphased by your appearance, sure seeing a new species was still shocking but all in al you were just like the rest of the mammal, birds and reptilian civilians that adorned pure heart valley and the world they resided in

But unlike mao mao badgerclops was always looking for a reason to hang out with you, he didnt care if you were a villain or not he just knew he thought you were neat! He’d usually ask you to play videogames with him or watch Kendo Ken with him when he snuck out to slack off during the sheriffs training hours

In a way he reminded you of adorabat but more chill, he was obviously just as curious as the rest and was second in place for asking questions about your customs, heritage and even more risky questions like how do you reproduce, of course that was away from the innocent ears of his batty companion

Over time the more you hung out the closer you two got and eventually you were deemed an honorary member of the team, Mao mao allowed it on two conditions, one you were really close to BC and two your opposable thumbs were an asset to mao mao if any one ever stole his gloves

The day he realized his feelings for you, you two were doing your usual slacking off routine playing a new video game that had just been released which had been coincidentally released on your arrival date. You were just chilling and softly leaned in against the soft mass of chub and fur next to you, Badgerclops noticed this and couldnt help but flush and feel pride as he noticed how relaxed you were. The rest of the night was really just filled with the two of you cuddling and endlessly playing the game until mao mao had to force you two off and out for some fresh air Light beeps and boops came from the illuminated screen that cascaded over the floor and spilt onto the couch illuminating the figures of (y/n) and badgerclops. The once rowdy living space was now filled with a comfortable silence as (y/n) leaned into badgerclops with a relieved sigh leaving through his nose as a soft grin was plastered on his face. Badgerclops jumped slightly and turned his head to look at (y/n) cuddling up and into his furry belly, his face turned red but his shoulders relaxed and he leaned slightly into (y/n) as well.With both men content and comfortable they played through the night and well into dawn as well.

Admission of feelings and relationship habits

He liked to internally brag that he was more open about his feelings than Mao Mao however it was actually YOU who had first initiated the confession. You had gone to everyone you trusted with this information, king snuggle mane, Adorabat, hell you even went to Ol’ Blue to try and get ideas for how to tell him. However you wer usually told you were over thinking and to just tell him during doing something you both liked

SOOO you kicked mao mao and adorabat out of the house at 7pm on a saturday and set up a little table filled with so many snacks and candies that you both loved and called badgerclops into the living room

He was happily surprised and in no time the games began, The fun went on for hours into the night until you both ended up laying down next to each other, both of you were redder than tomatoes and your heart felt like it was going to explode

Bc was worried at first, which caused him to sit up with you in his lap and ask you a soft yet concerned “Dude whats wrong?” and thats when you blurted it all out, How much you loved him and his witty inputs to whatever mao mao had to say, his caring and sensitive personality, even his pudgy belly it was all spilt

You were nervous as you waited for rejection but was only met with the larger man picking you up for a loving embrace that nearly crushed your ribs, he was smiling like a dork when he stepped back slightly and fell back into the couch with you. Responding with a soft “I love you too dude!!”

But surprisingly not much changed into the relationship, that is not much in what you did for date nights or in off time :)

Badgerclops had picked up the nicknames handsome, honey and jellybean to add to his repertoire of dudes and bros

He also began to get more touchy, always having to be holding your hand if in public or cuddling you on the couch. Of course he would always ask especially in public if you werent the biggest fan of pda or touching in general

He found a sort of comfort and confidence in you that he never really knew he had until you two had gotten this close. Now he was the farthest thing from a romantic but he had his own ways of making you feel loved

Badgerclops and (y/n) were once again on the couch, the place they practically spent most of their time at, watching some new show (y/n) had been excited to start streaming. However it wasnt going as planned. (y/n) let out a ‘bleh’ sound as his tongue poked through his lips and he turned off the tv “Man and i was so excited for that show too, but of course they already hinted that it’s going to end with the stupid ‘it was all a dream ‘cop out!” badgerclops let out an amused huff as he furrowed his brows upwards and layed an arm over the back of the couch to bring his boyfriend closer to himself. “They cant all be winners Jellybean..” that only made the smaller male pout even more, badgerclops internally squealed, even when (y/n) was mad he couldn't help but think he was cute. “I know! The new dlc for Kend Ken vs the world just dropped! Why dont we go out on the town to pick it up and get some ice cream?” that caught (y/n)’s attention for sure as the smaller male whipped his head around faster then McQueen in cars. The human stumbled up nearly busting his ass on many occasions “LAST ONE TO THE PLAZA PAY’S” BC laughed following (y/n) shutting the door behind them as they left the house for the first time that day.

Predictions for the Crown Episode:

Either a simplistic name like "The Decree" or "At Your Command", OR something goofy like "Kinglyclops"

The Decree probably has something to do with the Mao Clan; maybe they started out as knights and expanded to wider career choices once monarchies started dying out, but they still have a tendency to obey kings?

Like we see in the preview, Badgerclops abuses the power of the decree to make Mao Mao do stuff for him and Adorabat

A monster attacks and Mao Mao's like "Badgerclops do (such and such)" and Badgerclops' just like "No U" & does the clap thing, forcing Mao Mao to take down the monster

Then the Sky Pirates attack and Badgerclops does the clap thing again, but Orangusnake sees him do it and asks about it, to which either Badgerclops or Adorabat accidentally reveals that Mao Mao will obey anyone who bears a crown

Orangusnake, who bears a crown, then proceeds to do the clap thing to Mao Mao and forces him to attack his friends

Badgerclops tries to stop Mao Mao by clapping but his fake crown gets destroyed, so he can no longer control Mao Mao (R.I.P. Badgerclopia)

The only way Badgerclops and Adorabat can stop Mao Mao is by knocking off Orangusnake's crown; they do that and Mao Mao is freed of mind control, so they all defeat the Sky Pirates together

Badgerclops learns not to manipulate his friends for dumb reasons...probably

Adorabat probably makes Badgerclops do stuff for Mao Mao as revenge for abusing the decree

"mmmaoo... mmmaooo... mmm so legendary heheheh... " Mao mumbled stretching out a little before curling back into a ball on top of Badgerclops’ stomach, rising and falling with every breath of his cohero.

The sun was shining, the outside was snowing, and the two were napping comfortably on the couch after their most recent tussle with the skypirates. perfect conditions for a relaxing afternoon.

*BANG!*

Until the front door slammed open.

"SUP Y’ALL I’M BACK!" Adorabat screeched, scuttling into the room. Badgerclops jolted, accidentally shoving a flailing Mao onto the floor.

"Hwuh? – oh hey ‘dorabat," he yawned "how was skewl?"

Adorabat closed the door behind her and flew over to sit on the couch arm near Badgerclops’ head.

"It was great! We made winterfest ornaments. This one’s mine, see?’ she said, shoving a popsicle framed picture into his face. Badgerclops took the ornament and sat up, scooching over to make room for Mao. It was a simple crayon drawing of the 3 of them holding hands with Adorabat in the middle.

"Wonderful work Adorabat" said Mao. She beamed and flapped her wings to settle on Badgerclops’ shoulder.

"so when are we gonna hang it on the tree?" Adorabat asked, bouncing in place excitedly. Badgerclops and Mao shared an awkward look.

"Oh, uh, hhmmm. I don’t think I’ve celebrated winterfest in like, a while. Me n the Thicket Thieves weren’t really all that close y’know?"

Mao touched his chin, contemplating. "Now that you mention it, I haven’t celebrated it much either. Not since...’ [bao bao flashback]. He shook his head.

"Didn’t yall ever celebrate it together?"

"I guess we were traveling so much before coming to pureheart valley that we forgot." Badgerclops rubbed the back of his head. "But we’ll definitely celebrate it with you starting this year!" he reassured.

"Ye-yeah!" Mao chimed in, ruffling her head "We can’t let all your hard work go to waste now can we? haha"

Mao stood up, hands on his hips. "First things first, we should get a tree so we can hang your ornament Adorabat"

"Dude, do we really have to get one of THESE trees?"

"Of course!" Mao exclaimed, sizing up the surrounding pines before heading for the tallest one "Bigger is better when it comes to Winterfest trees after all"

"Ok but I’M the one who has to carry it back, besides," Badgerclops scanned the tree his friend was getting ready to cut down "this one’s too big, it won’t fit in the house"

"Nonsense Badgerclops,’ Mao said, felling the massive pine with one swipe of Geraldine "it's the perfect size"

"But-"

"We’re not even that far from HQ," Mao made his way to the base of the tree, digging his claws into the wood and pulling. "Now come on and *grunt* help me drag this bad boy *HHHHRRRAAAAAHHH* to the aerocycle"

"Actually, my dear sheriff- oof!" Mao whirled around, only to run into a solid chest and get a face full of impeccably groomed fur.

"QUINTON!!" Mao suddenly found himself standing next to his deputies.

"Mmmwhere was I? Ah yes~ unfortunately for you, my dear sheriff, only pureheart valley farmers have jurisdiction to cut pine trees during Winterfest season"

"Wha-"

"So we’ll be confiscating this one, ah-ha~. QUINTON!!" the king yelled.

"Wait, your grace-"

"Ta ta~‘ The king winked and blew a kiss to the sheriff’s department as he and quinton disappeared into the underground tunnels, taking the tree with them.

Mao, Badgerclops and Adorabat stared at the spot in disbelief.

"Soooooo, Farmer Buns?‘ Adorabat piped from Badgerclops’ shoulder

‘yeah ok‘

Badgerclops picked up a stunned Mao and the trio made their way over to the aerocycle.

"PINKY YOU SLIPPERY BASTARD GET BACK HE- WHOA!", Mao slipped on a patch of ice, crashing into some of the ready cut winterfest trees as a mayonnaise covered pinky literally slipped out of his grasp.

"nyeh nyeh can't catch me hahahaha"

"What the heck Pinky, WE were gonna get that tree‘ Badgerclops said, rounding a corner and shooting nets from his robo arm rapid fire. Pinky continued to dodge them as he made his way to Farmer Bun, tree tag number in hand.

"Finders keepers losers weep- GAH!" Pinky yelled, getting a face full of smoke.

"Smoke bomb! smoke bomb!"

Mao swiped the number from Pinkys oily grasp "HA HA got it! Ok Yall lets go buy our tree" he said, already marching over, friends in tow and money in paw.

‘WE FORGOT THE TREE!!‘ Adorabat screeched.

‘HANG ON YALL’ Mao made a sharp U-turn as Adorabat slammed the turbo boost button, the 3 of them screaming all the way back to the farm.

Badgerclops poked his head out of the kitchen, spatula hand switching back to normal as he walked into the living room where Mao and Adorabat were making more ornaments.

"Hey guys, snacks are done" Badgerclops said, careful not to crush any of the drawings or origami decorations that littered the floor before sitting down next to Mao and putting the plate on the table.

"COOKIES!!" Adorabat let go of a jar of glitter and hopped onto the table, taking 2 of the still hot cookies and shoving one into her mouth "Ohm nom nom nom nom nom"

"Adorabat be careful, you could burn yourself"

"Here ya go lil dude" Badgerclops reeled his robo arm in, holding a tray with 3 cups of milk and sliding one of them towards Adorabat.

"Thabnk ou!' said Adorabat, cheeks puffed.

"And one for m‘ Mao Mao"

Mao tossed the finished origami star into the large pile at his right before accepting his lucky ducky mug.

"Thanks Badgerclops. I think we're almost done with the rest of the decorations," Mao bit into a cookie, looking at the tree in the corner of the room with Adorabat’s skewl ornament sitting proudly in the top branches "we can probably put them up in the morning, or maybe after second patrol. What do you think Adorabat?"

"Afternoon please! I wanna take my time and make sure it looks nice"

"Afternoon it is"

"Yall wanna watch the new soap opera episode? It's a winterfest themed one~" Badgerclops asked, already turning the TV on and channel surfing.

"Oh yeah!!" Adorabat circled the air above his head before landing on the middle cushion. Mao stood up and stretched, cracking what sounded like every bone in his body. Moving to sit on her right, he unfolded the large blanket from the back of the couch before putting it on their laps.

2 hours later the whole sheriff’s department was asleep.

Mao’s head was resting on Badgerclops’ shoulder, and Adorabat had somehow wiggled her way onto Mao mao’s lap, her head pillowed by Badgerclops’ thigh. The blanket was starting to fall to the floor as a Winterfest jingle played from the TV.

Theory: Adorabat is a monster

Explains why she looks so different from the other Sweetie Pies (I know it’s bc she’s a mc but C’MON she’s got sharp teeth and everything)

Gives a reason why, despite growing up in a very safe pre-Mao Mao Pure Heart Valley, she’s missing a leg

Instinctively lashes out violently- “DO U LOVE UR MOMMY”

Taken in bc she was by the barrier and was ‘cute enough’, which is why she has no parents and is well-known

Only Sweetie Pie who constantly flies/has no hands whatsoever

Idk I just think it’d be kinda cool

@powpowitsmaomao hoooo boy u done and got me started!!

ok so to clarify adorabat is actually a page of rage! (i know its hard to tell, her little torso is so hard to draw outfits on gkgjd) so for her i chose page of rage since she shows really strong convictions in truth and emotion but not so much in morals (in other words its the one thing keeping me from making her a page of hope) and she shows incredible untapped potential that is natural for a page that she could access given the proper training and time.

for Mao i felt Knight of Hope was almost just a given? (almost went with knight of heart) his strong belief in justice, right and wrong and his whole “heroes code” just screams knight of hope. im not extremely eloquent with this one but basically i see mao as a hero who uses his hope and heroes code to protect others. he weaponizes his belief. and like most knights he also suffers from his aspect. (his convictions cause him great distress in almost every episode)

i see badgerclops as a mage of life because he kinda just fits? this was more of a gut thing but i think bc would make a great life player. tbh im still on the fence here. i can also see him as a bard of void?? im sorry i cant do him justice ;~;

hey, I just wanted to ask if you could clarify, but in that one post where u talked about adorabat shipping when you said that "people can do whatever you want" it came across like you were saying that u were fine with people shipping adults with kids, is that what you were trying to say? I just wanted to ask to give u the benefit of the doubt that you just worded it poorly

Im not fine with shipping adults with kids, but what I was trying to say is there are people who does that and I cant do anything to stop them :/ well at least they will not be welcome in my blog.

Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION.

This Book takes its name from the holy man Tobias, whose wonderful virtues are herein recorded. It contains most excellent documents of great piety, extraordinary patience, and of perfect resignation to the will of God. His humble prayer was heard, and the angel Raphael was sent to relieve him: he is thankful, and praises the Lord, calling on the children of Israel to do the same. Having lived to the age of one hundred and two years, he exhorts his son and grandsons to piety, foretells the destruction of Ninive, and the rebuilding of Jerusalem: he dies happily. Ch. --- The Jews themselves have a great regard for the book of Tobias; (Grot. Sixtus Senens. viii.) which Origen (ad Afric.) says they "read in Hebrew," meaning probably the Chaldee, (C.) out of which language S. Jerom translated it, preferring to displease the Pharisaical Jews, rather than not to satisfy the desires of the holy bishops Chromatius and Heliodorus. Ep. t. iii. W. --- The Greek version seems to have been taken from another copy, or it has been executed with greater liberty by the Hellenist Jews, between the times of the Sept. and of Theodotion. C. --- Huet and Prideaux esteem it more original; and Houbigant has translated it in his Bible, as the Council of Trent only spoke of the Latin editions then extant; and S. Jerom followed in his version the Hebrew one of a Jew, as he did not understand the Chaldee. H. --- The Syriac and the modern Hebrew edition of Fagius, agree mostly with the Greek, as that of Munster and another Heb. copy of Huet, and the Arabic version, both unpublished, are more conformable to the Vulgate. The most ancient Latin version used before S. Jerom, was taken from the Greek; and the Fathers who lived in those ages, speak of it when they call the book of Tobias canonical. S. Aug. leaves it, however, to adopt S. Jerom's version, in his Mirrour. The copies of all these versions vary greatly, (C.) though the substance of the history is still the same; and in all we discover the virtues of a good parent, of a dutiful son, and virtuous husband, beautifully described. H. --- "The servant of God, holy Tobias, is given to us after the law for an example, that we might know how to practise what we read; and that if temptations assail us, we may not depart from the fear of God, nor expect help from any other." S. Aug. q. 119. ex utroque Test. --- The four first chapters exhibit the holy life of old Tobias, and the eight following, the journey and affairs of his son, directed by Raphael. In the two last chapters they praise God, and the elder Tobias foretells the better state of the commonwealth. W. --- It is probable that both left records, from which this work has been compiled, with a few additional observations. It was written during (C.) or after the captivity of Babylon. E. --- The Jews had then little communication with each other, in different kingdoms. Tobias was not allowed to go into Media, under Sennacherib; and it is probable that the captives at Babylon would be under similar restrictions; so that we do not need to wonder that they were unacquainted with this history of a private family, the records of which seem to have been kept at Ecbatana. The original Chaldee is entirely lost, so that it is impossible to ascertain whether the Greek or the Vulg. be more conformable to it. The chronology of the latter seems however more accurate, as the elder Tobias foretold the destruction of Ninive, twenty-three years before the event, which his son just beheld verified, dying in the 18th year of king Josias. The accounts which appear to sectaries to be fabulous, may easily be explained. Houbigant. --- Josephus and Philo omit this history. C.

Igitur, cum per captivitatem devenisset cum uxore sua, et filio, in civitatem Niniven cum omni tribu sua

[12] (When all ate of the meats of the Gentiles) he kept his soul and never was defiled with their meats.

[13] And because he was mindful of the Lord with all his heart, God gave him favour in the sight of Salmanasar the king.

[14] And he gave him leave to go whithersoever he would, with liberty to do whatever he had a mind.

et dedit illi potestatem quocumque vellet ire, habens libertatem quaecumque facere voluisset.

[15] He therefore went to all that were in captivity, and gave them wholesome admonitions.

Pergebat ergo ad omnes qui erant in captivitate, et monita salutis dabat eis.

[16] And when he was come to Rages a city of the Medes, and had ten talents of silver of that with which he had been honoured by the king:

Cum autem venisset in Rages civitatem Medorum, et ex his, quibus honoratus fuerat a rege, habuisset decem talenta argenti :

[17] And when amongst a great multitude of his kindred, he saw Gabelus in want, who was one of his tribe, taking a note of his hand he gave him the aforesaid sum of money.

et cum in multa turba generis sui Gabelum egentem videret, qui erat ex tribu ejus, sub chirographo dedit illi memoratum pondus argenti.

[18] But after a long time, Salmanasar the king being dead, when Sennacherib his son, who reigned in his place, had a hatred for the children of Israel:

Post multum vero temporis, mortuo Salmanasar rege, cum regnaret Sennacherib filius ejus pro eo, et filios Israel exosos haberet in conspectu suo :

[19] Tobias daily went among all his kindred, and comforted them, and distributed to every one as he was able, out of his goods:

Tobias quotidie pergebat per omnem cognationem suam, et consolabatur eos, dividebatque unicuique, prout poterat, de facultatibus suis :

[20] He fed the hungry, and gave clothes to the naked, and was careful to bury the dead, and they that were slain.

esurientes alebat, nudisque vestimenta praebebat, et mortuis atque occisis sepulturam sollicitus exhibebat.

[21] And when king Sennacherib was come back, fleeing from Judea by reason of the slaughter that God had made about him for his blasphemy, and being angry slew many of the children of Israel, Tobias buried their bodies.

Denique cum reversus esset rex Sennacherib fugiens a Judaea plagam, quam circa eum fecerat Deus propter blasphemiam suam, et iratus multos occideret ex filiis Israel, Tobias sepeliebat corpora eorum.

[22] But when it was told the king, he commanded him to be slain, and took away all his substance.

At ubi nuntiatum est regi, jussit eum occidi, et tulit omnem substantiam ejus.

[23] But Tobias fleeing naked away with his son and with his wife, lay concealed, for many loved him.

Tobias vero cum filio suo et cum uxore suo fugiens, nudus latuit, quia multi diligebant eum.

[24] But after forty-five days, the king was killed by his own sons.

Post dies vero quadraginta quinque occiderunt regem filii ipsius,

[25] And Tobias returned to his house, and all his substance was restored to him.

et reversus est Tobias in domum suam, omnisque facultas ejus restituta est ei.

Commentary:

Ver. 1. Tobias, "good God," (T.) is styled Tobis, by the ancient Latin version and S. Ambrose, and Tobit by the Greek and Syriac. These copies and the Heb. give a genealogy which does not agree. C. --- Grabe's edit. "The book of the words (or transactions) of Tobit, Son of Tobiel, son of Ananiel, son of Adouel, (MS. has Nave) son of Galael, (MS. Gamael) of the seed of Asiel, of the tribe of Nephthali, (2) who was made captive in the days of Enemessar, king of the Assyrians, from Thisbe, (MS. Thibe) which is on the right properly (MS. of Kudis. H. or Cades, capital. C.) of Nephthali in Galilee, above Aser. I, Tobit, walked in the ways of truth and of justice all the days of my life." H. --- Nehemias and the prophets frequently speak of themselves in the first person. The truth of the history is the same. D. --- Beyond, or behind; (post. H.) as the Hebrews speak with reference to a man turned towards the east. Hence this way would be on the west, and Sephet on the north.

Ver. 2. Salmanasar. When Osee was conquered, A. 3283. See 4 K. xvii. 6. --- Truth. His constancy in the observance of the true religion was so much the more wonderful, as he was rich, and lived among the wicked. C.

Ver. 3. Kindred. Greek adds, "who went along with me...to Ninive."

Ver. 4. Younger. "Very young," (H.) or the youngest of those who administered their own affairs. The parents of Tobias were deceased. C. --- Greek, "when I was young in my country, in the land of Israel, all the tribe," &c.

Ver. 5. All, or the greatest part; (H.) for some still feared God; (C. ii. 2. W.) and the Greek of C. v. 14. or 19. informs us that Ananias and Jonathan accompanied Tobias. H. --- Greek is more diffuse. C. --- (4) "All the tribe of Nephthali, of my father, departed from the house of Jerusalem, which city had been chosen from all the tribes of Israel, for all the tribes to offer sacrifice; and the temple of the tabernacle of the most High was sanctified, and was built forever; (5) and all the tribes, apostatizing together, sacrificed to Baal, to the heifer; (Comp. ed. to the power of Baal) and the house of Nephthali, of my father, likewise. (6) And I alone went frequently to Jerusalem, at the feasts" (H.) of the Passover, &c. M. --- The other versions are nearly similar. C. --- But we cannot specify all these variations. H. --- The number has induced some to conclude, not improbably, that there were two originals; (T.) the Syriac by the elder, and the Chaldee by the younger Tobias. Justiniani. --- But this is destitute of proof. C.

Ver. 7. Strangers. See Deut. xiv. 28. M. Lev. xxvii. 30. C. --- Greek, "And the third I gave to whom it belonged, as Debbora, my father's mother, ordered me, as I was left an orphan by my father; (9) and when I was," &c. H.

Ver. 9. Man. The Jews married young: but the time was not fixed. C. --- After. Greek, "Tobias." They always style the father Tobit. H.

Ver. 11. Ninive, called Ninus by Pliny, &c. M. --- It was so large, as easily to receive a whole tribe, which was sold for slaves. C.

Ver. 12. Meats, such as had been immolated to idols, (M.) or were forbidden to the Jews. C.

Ver. 14. And he. Greek, "I was his marketter," (H.) to provide provisions for the palace. "He set me over all he had, till the day of his death." Munster. --- But this Hebrew author has probably exaggerated the matter, to make Tobias appear as great as he could. These editions add no more, continuing, (15) "And I went into Media, and I deposited with Gabael, or Gabelus," &c.

Ver. 16. Rages means "rupture," by frequent earthquakes, and was (M. C.) the residence of the Parthian kings, in spring, (Athen. xii. 2.) in the mountain, separating their country from Media. --- Honoured for his salary. C.

Ver. 17. Money. People might formerly make use of what was merely deposited in their hands. Ulpian. --- The old Latin version has, "I committed to him ten talents in gold."

Ver. 18. Time. Salmanasar reigned fourteen years; seven after the captivity, which to people in distress would appear long. C. --- Gr. "And after Enemessar was dead, Sennacherib, his son, reigned in his stead; and his ways ceased, (or his high roads were stopped) and I could no longer go into Media." H. --- We find nothing in history to confirm this stoppage: (C.) but it might be in consequence of the wars. Houbigant. See the preface. H. --- Israel. This hatred was augmented, after the unfortunate expedition into Palestine. C. M. 4 K. xix. 35.

Ver. 19. Goods, under Sennacherib; though he was now deprived of his place. C. --- Greek, Syr. and Heb. insinuate, that this happened under his predecessor. H.

Ver. 20. Slain, by order or connivance of Sennacherib. M. --- Tobias buried the dead, out of charity, and the belief of a future resurrection. Hence arises the respect for tombs and the relics of the saints. C. --- The pagans imagined that the souls could not rest till their bodies were interred. Homer, Virgil vii. &c. C.

Ver. 23. Loved him, even of the Assyrians. The Jews were not able to afford him shelter. M.

Ver. 24. Forty. Arabic, twenty-five; Gr. and Syr. fifty; other Gr. copies, fifty-five days. Fagius says Tobias was hidden nineteen days. It seems, therefore, we should date these forty-five days from the return of Sennacherib. --- Sons. See 4 K. xix. 37. and Isai. xxxvii. 38. C. --- Gr. adds, "and they fled to the mountains of Ararat, and Sacherdoc, (our Assaraddon) his son, reigned in his stead; and he appointed Achiachar Anael, the son of my brother, over all the accounts of his kingdom, and over all his government. And Achiachar petitioned for me; and I came to Ninive. But Achiachar was cup-bearer, (Alex. MS. receiver of wine) and keeper of the ring, and governor and keeper of accounts; and Sacherdonosos gave him the second place. But he was my nephew. And when I returned to my house, and my wife Anna, and my son Tobias, were restored to me, at the feast of Pentecost," &c. H. --- This seems contrary to v. 23. Yet the Heb. copies agree in this particular, and mention the dignity of Akikar. But we may judge what credit these additions deserve. C. - They merit some attention, as they may be original. See Pref. H.
