A Special Announcement~ | Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V Tag Force Special Re-Translation Project!

I've been itching to get around to posting about this for a few months now, but wanted to wait until I'd worked on enough for it, but also had the idea to create an announcement trailer to go with it for added good measure--after recording and editing clips for a couple weeks and leveling the audio last night, heremst we are! (For some clips, I forgot to turn off the PPSSPP emulator's DevMenu option so that shows up in the top-left, buuut I didn't feel like re-recording those, lmao.)

Details worth reading below the cut here, but tl;dr work has been in progress for over a year in between things, work will continue to be in progress for a while, and the release will happen when everything's ready, but stay tuned, fun's getting started etc etc~

So, I'm sure most of us are familiar with the as-yet-unlocalized-by-Konami TFSP, the seventh and last entry in the Tag Force series on the PSP that came out early in ARC-V's run (featuring the first five series which was a cool first), as well as the current translations out there originally worked on by the guys at XenoTranslations (omarrrio and ScrewTheRules/ClickClaxer01 at GBATemp handling the card and story/etc translations, respectively) and how there are... some issues with what's out there. Everything from the DM story mode being loaded with YGOTAS references (no shade to YGOTAS and much respect to LK/Martin for his ongoing work on it still making me laugh sometimes, ofc) to the off-the-cuff edginess of 2014-2015-era internet culture and the problematic (in some cases, derogatory) language that permeated it--though to its credit, some parts do have some level of translation attempted, but taken as a whole, it can definitely turn people off from giving the game a try and seeing what it brings to the table (which is still a good amount despite the corners Konami cut here/there compared to prior TF games).

I actually did attempt a translation of my own back in 2015 (if you've been following me for a long time, you might remember it lol), tackling the GX story text starting with Judai's heart events, but eventually put it on the backburner as I focused more on my GX subbing work and beginning to finalize everything (which I'm still doing). Sometime in 2022, a friend over on NeoArkCradle (the "anonymous YGO fan" in the opening screen) was poring over the story text and patching it up the best he could to remove the references and inaccuracies with more coherent work, and after a while of seeing what he was working with in the Discord, I was a bit blown away by just how inaccurate much of it was--so alongside him, and using the better tools available since then (including some really awesome work from both nzxth2 [who did a proper re-translation of 5D's TF6 not too long ago and was kind enough to release his tools for it] and our coding helper Xan1242 who we eventually reached out to for some help), I decided to *cracks knuckles* get involved and help give everything a more accurate and professional translation, much like I do with my GX subs, working directly off the Japanese text and files. I've been taking cracks at everything in between the GX episodes I've been finalizing going back to at least last January (and I'd used my little hiatus after finalizing GX Season 2's subs to really get at some other stuff throughout the game), starting with re-translating DM's story text but also properly translating other aspects of the game, from the character names (using the original Japanese names, including those of the TF-exclusive characters, partly since Konami made a whole mess of them in English TF1-5), in-duel dialogue, pack descriptions, and more to images with Japanese text (such as localizing the in-duel cut-in onomatopoeia as you see in the video above, or other little images throughout) using some Photoshop skills I've picked up. And it's been a joint effort, as said NAC friend and I have been bouncing off how we'd like to see this go between us to stay on the same page and all, while also checking with other translators there for second/third opinions as needed.

Our plan is to release two versions of a translation--one which uses the OCG [translated] card names in Story Mode, in-duel, and other text but not in the game's card system (mainly to deal with story-relevant notes like Osiris vs Slifer with the Gods or things like not-Utopia Hope being symbolic between Yuma and Astral, akin to how I do my GX subs), and one which uses the TCG card names in everything (like how the official subs go about it). While we're mostly working with the Japanese game files due to how the Xeno team went about decoding everything, we'll be using the card-system-related files from the fixed ISO provided by FLSGaming which fixed some issues that had been present there. And Xan has helped us with a plugin that will be used to apply our translations to the system files that were hard to edit otherwise (things like the character and recipe names, as well as the pack names pulled from for the Card Description screen), but more on how that'll work once this is ready for release, lol. At some point, I'd like to also look at HDifying textures and things, but that's definitely a bonus-level thing for after the main work here is done.

SO.

Currently, Story-Mode-wise, I've gone through everything up to Yusei's events--so Dark Yugi/Kaiba/Jounouchi/Ishizu/Mai in DM, Judai/Manjoume/Asuka/Misawa/Ryou in GX, and Yusei in 5D's have been fully retranslated, though I took initial cracks at Yuma and Yuya's events to get content for this video lol (I've also been intentionally holding off on as much ZEXAL as I can until I've properly watched the whole show so I have context). I haven't tackled overworld text yet, though (like pre-duel or the tournament-related text, which is all in the same file as all the story text). I've also been handling the in-duel dialogue as I go through the character stories, so also just up to Yusei, though I did take initial cracks at Aki's, Yuma and Shark's, and Yuya and Yuzu's for the video.

Other things tackled that were sprinkled into the video, along with some other notes:

Pack names and descriptions have been retranslated, though the descriptions may see minor edits closer to release for a little variety between worlds given the different characters at the shop. Character recipe names were also retranslated, with Yugipedia's translations for them used as an occasional second opinion, though ones based on pack names had to be abbreviated in spots.

Menu text, from the Options to Help screens and stuff in between, has been retranslated, as have in-duel text strings (so, you'll see a full "Activate Effect" instead of "Activate" or "Switch to Attack/Defense Position" instead of "Switch to ATK/DEF Position", etc--also fixed the "BATTELE PHASE" graphic typo, and NAC friend created a new translation for the "Turn Change" graphic for accuracy since ENG TF1-5 made that into "Next Player's Turn").

Database stuff, such as the Sound Test, Tutorials, Duel Missions, etc., have been retranslated closer to the Japanese text; originally I retranslated the Tutorial text via hex editor, with compromises done on quite a bit of it due to the space limits, but as Xan recently updated a text extractor tool of theirs to more cleanly pull out and reinsert that text, I've been going through and fleshing out those translations more (on my commutes to/from work mostly, to be productive lol).

As mentioned, I've been localizing/translating Japanese-text images throughout the game as I come across them, like with the in-duel onomatopoeia that come up during cut-ins or images in the shop/duel/etc screens using Japanese text, to make sure the game is fully translated.

The series logos, used during the title sequence and in the Series Select screens, were updated with translated fan edits shared on Deviantart (which we'll credit in the final release) for DM and GX, while the 5D's-ARC-V logos were edited to enlarge the "Yu-Gi-Oh!" text on them that was pretty hard to see originally.

The game's original opening sequence starts on an anti-piracy message before going into the Konami logo and then a "From Yu-Gi-Oh!..." screen before the opening animation for each series logo--the original team decided to use the first image to vent their frustration at Konami for not localizing this game, and while that's valid (to some extent), we thought we'd use the opportunity to dedicate this project to Kazuki Takahashi for inspiring our love for YGO and the place it's had in our hearts for all these years.

We'll be updating the names of cards that had TCG releases after the original patch was worked on/updated by FLSG to those corresponding names.

Xan has been working on many UI fixes for us to apply with this, among them 3-line dialogue box text as is used in the ENG TF1-5 games--once implemented for TFSP, I'll be going over everything to make full use of that extra space where needed, so things might not look as they do in the video by then.

Character bios will be worked on after I've done the story stuff, though I've taken initial cracks at it for Yuma and Yuya's bios for the video, along with translating the location/affiliation names ("Domino High School," "Satellite," etc).

Currently no release date is planned, as I'm working on this between my GX-finalizing work and actual IRL work, though we'll see how later this year looks as more work gets done--but as noted in the video, all things being equal, it will be released when everything is ready. I'll try to post regular updates or rambles now that this announcement's been made, lol, but do try not to constantly check in on a release date. 🙏🏽

All that said, I think that covers just about everything I wanted to put out there with this, lol. It's been fun to work on this so far and getting to see what I've re-translated in-game is definitely neat; looking forward to us being able to release everything when ready.

So @jokeringcutio gave me a thought about Arthur with his child asking to wear a crocodile hat so i came up with this super fluffy drabble hehe

Note : I give details for Arthur’s kid because I find it hard to make him interact with a blank character that is not the reader so yeah, this is purely my personal headcanon but feel free to use it lol. I imagine Arthur having a daughter named Rya (Which definitely not Elden Ring Reference lmao). She’s stubborn, feisty, and prefers animal toys.

“Are you sure you wanted this one ?” Arthur hunched to look closer at his daughter, who was already wearing a crocodile plush hat.

“ Yeah, this one only. Not the other animal.” She held the hat close to her head, not wanting to let go.

“How about..this one ? This hippo looks cute, don’t you think ?” Arthur took a plush hat of a hippo next to him.

“No, I don't want that. I don’t like taweret, I like ammit better.” Rya shook her head, which made Arthur furrowed his brows. He took a look at the hippo plush hat, confused as the plush hat was just a regular hippo not the goddess.

“This is just a hippopotamus, Rya. But i think she looks cuter-”

“No no I don't want that !” Rya stomped her feet in protest, pouting like an angry little puppy. Arthur laughed, then sighed.

“Alright alright, no need to be a feisty little crocodile.” Arthur put back the plush hat, then walked to the cashier to buy it.

He did tell Rya about the enneads, about Ammit. What he didn’t expect was she grew obsessed with his goddess. He did teach her some of Ammit’s lessons, preaching about the goodness of the world she brought within but he didn’t expect she would actually take a liking to the crocodile lady as an idol. He thought she would prefer some mainstream girl stuff like barbies, female superheroes, etc. Not that it’s a bad thing though, he just kind of surprised Rya chose animal toys rather than those stuff, especially the one that resembles the Enneads.

Moreover, Rya was bestowed with a special vision, that she could see the enneads despite they were being invisible. He found out when she was just a little baby, Ammit towering over the baby crib while his daughter laughed happily. But the way Ammit partook of mothering her worried him a bit, as she was still a mix between 3 dangerous animals in Egypt.

She carried Rya the way a mother crocodile carries her hatchlings, by gently shoving his baby inside her throat pouch. You once saw that, and panicked as you thought Ammit was eating baby Harrow while she was confused, ‘merely holding the baby. And she was the one who taught Rya to be feisty and stubborn like a lion cub, but she was also the one who taught her to be strong like a hippopotamus and swim like a crocodile. You often caught your daughter riding Ammit in her sphynx form as well. Her mother's instinct was strong, proving the title of “Best reptilian mother” for crocodilians kind.

“I also want this one, papa.” Just as Arthur was about to pull out his wallet, Rya took a crocodile plushie that was as big as her.

“Your mother will scold me for this stuff, Rya.” Arthur chuckled at her.

“At least it’s you, not me. Mama will let me have it all anyway.”

“Okay, okay. But that’s all, alright ?”

Looking at her daughter being cheerful, felt like he was free from the weight he carried in his life.

“Let’s go home, shall we ?” Arthur lent his hand to his daughter, which she grabbed quickly.

Rya hummed happily with the new toys she got, couldn’t wait to tell her mama and her crocodile grandmother about her new plushies. She hugged the croc plush tightly, filled with happiness. Arthur smiled warmly, this was why he loved having quality time with his daughter. To see her smile happily, he’d do anything including fighting the world for her sake.

The clouds hang over Hawkins like an immovable force. They have been there for what seems like months, years even. By this point in the slow winter to spring transition in Indiana, you would do anything to see the sun. Everything feels dull, boring, lifeless. The only time it doesn’t is when you are sitting at the desk or on the floor of your best friend Eddie’s room. He never uses the overhead light, just soft, warm lamps with the curtains drawn. The scent of his cologne mixed with weed and incense are a permanent fixture in the air. When you were in that room with him, everything else slipped away. Thoughts of your dysfunctional family, college plans, cruel classmates; they couldn’t touch you there.

This particular gloomy March day was no different, apart from the feeling that sat aching beneath the surface of your chest. A mixture of sadness, anger, jealousy, and fear put you on edge in what was typically your most comfortable environment. You were sitting at the little wobbly table in Eddie’s room that you used as a desk, but he mostly used as a place to put things down and never pick them back up. While you suffered through your algebra homework, Eddie was practicing for his show tonight. Him and his band play at a local restaurant and bar sometimes. They aren’t well-known or even particularly well liked, but you enjoy going to see them. Their music is fine, you’re not as into metal as Eddie is but you don’t mind it. What you really go for is their energy. Eddie has more passion for music than someone like Madonna or Steven Tyler has in just one hand. He is normally a very animated person but when he gets on stage it’s like he transforms into a real rock star. His eyes light up and he moves around the little stage as if its Madison Square Garden. That’s why you go. You love that version of him. Well, you love all versions of him, really. That’s why you’re sitting cross legged in the wooden chair at the desk avoiding his gaze. Looking into his eyes would just remind you of the way he looked into someone else’s earlier today.

After lunch you were heading to English class when you saw Eddie leaning against a row of lockers. You were going to go over and talk with him until you realized he was already engaged in conversation. Her strawberry blonde hair hung in a ponytail down her back and the outfit she wore was unmistakable. It was a white, green, and gold cheer uniform. It was Chrissy Cunningham. You worried for a moment that he was the target of yet another round of bullying by the jocks but none of her friends were around. And Eddie didn’t seem distressed or even uncomfortable. In fact, he was smiling and laughing, and so was Chrissy. When she spoke, you saw Eddie turn silent and give her all of his attention. It made you ache inside because you knew what her friends put him through but also because you wanted to be the only one he looked at like that. And finally, his face turned deadly serious and took her hand in his. You couldn’t stand it any longer so you briskly made your way towards your next class, trying not to think about how soft his hands must have felt in hers. You tried not to think about how sometimes his touch feels like it carries electricity and the fire it ignites in you.

You’re snapped back to reality when you hear Eddie’s voice carefully break the silence with your name.

“Y/n? Earth to y/n? Are you alright over there?” He’s trying to keep his tone playful, but he can sense the shift in your mood.

“Yeah, I’m fine.” You speak quietly and without meeting his gaze.

He carefully places the guitar on his bed and walks over to crouch down beside you. “I’m not sensing fine. Do I need to beat somebody up? Well, it might be better if its just a stern talking to. I don’t think I’ve got what it takes to do any damage.” You see out of the corner of your eye that he holds his arm up and pretends to flex his muscles.

You chuckle a bit at his words, but you still can’t face him. “It’s nothing… I mean… I don’t know.” You’re worried if you bring this up, it will put your feelings for him on full display. When you finally turn to him, a burst of anger and jealousy flashes through you.

“It’s whatever, don’t worry about it. Honestly, don’t even worry about me tonight either. You can invite your new best friend to the show. I’m sure she’ll love that.” You spit, adding extra sarcasm to the word love. You knew you were acting irrationally, but you couldn’t stop yourself.

As you spoke his brows drew closer together and now, he is leaned back on his arms staring up at you from the floor. “What the fuck? What are you talking about?”

“I saw you with Chrissy Cunningham earlier. After lunch.” You pause to think then add, “I just really don’t understand why you’re drooling all over her after what those assholes she’s friends with put you through. Sure, she’s like the Chrissy but that doesn’t mean she’s going to be any nicer to you than her friends have been. And why were you even talking to her? I thought it was well understood that we are not welcome by them.”

He has stood up now and has his hand on his head like he’s thinking. “Wait. Go back- ‘drooling all over her’? What are you talking about?”

“I’m talking about you flirting with her right there in the middle of the hallway. You were making it pretty obvious, with all your smiling and laughing and hand holding.”

“Y/n, I can assure you that I was not flirting with Chrissy. Honestly, she stopped me in the hall and asked me to sell her something to cope with some shit she’s going through.” He’s fallen to his knees in front of your chair, hoping to convince you of his sincerity.

You’re not entirely sure what to say because on one hand you believe him, but on the other hand, you saw the way he looked at her. “I don’t know Eddie.” You trail off because his proximity has left you slightly breathless.

He abruptly stands up and towers over you, still sitting. After a moment he asks, “What can I do to make you believe me?”

“Oh god. I don’t know. Just forget it.” You wave your hands and turn back to your schoolwork. You still feel his eyes on you as you go back to your algebra homework. He slowly walks over to pick his guitar back up and continue practicing.

You pass the next hour and a half like that, both silently working on your own thing. When the clock reads 6:00pm, Eddie hangs his guitar back up on the wall as you put your book and papers away. When you’re about to grab your tattered denim jacket off the back of the chair, Eddie calls out a soft “Hey.” When you turn your attention to him, his hand is up by his heart with his index, pinkie fingers, and thumb outstretched. The sign language sign for “I love you” has always been like a secret code between you. It can mean anything from “this class fucking sucks and I wish we could leave”, to “thanks for being there for me”. Right now, it means, “I’m sorry if things are weird but I mean what I said and I want us to have fun tonight.” You love when he does the sign because you can almost imagine it meaning what its supposed to, “I love you.”

When you get to Pizza King, you get a table made of plastic with wood paneling surrounding you on all sides. You leave the menus at the edge of the table since you always get the same thing. The neat thing about Pizza King is that instead of a waiter taking your order, there is a telephone at each table where you call and place your order with the kitchen. Eddie picks up the phone and recites his lines, “Hello Mr. or Mrs. Pizza King! May we please have a large royal feast pizza with extra cheese? I’ll need two plates as well, please, one for me and one for the lady.” While the employee reads the order back to him, you have an idea. You crack a smile and give him the “I love you” sign. He knows immediately what you mean by it. He grins into the phone, “Ok, ok, thank you, love you, bye.” And hangs up. You both giggle conspiratorially even though it was a childish joke. It felt nice just to laugh with each other after the uncomfortable situation earlier. That breaks the ice that has formed between you and leads to normal conversation for the rest of the meal.

After you finish your shared pizza, Eddie drives you both over to The Hideout. You fall in with your typical routine where you find a table to sit and drink a soda while he meets up with his band and sets up their instruments on the makeshift stage. You have seen him perform many times but it’s always fun. Not to mention how good he looks doing it. When his hair gets a little sweaty around his face and his eyes shine with the light of a dream realized.

By the time he’s got just one song left, you’re nearing the bottom of your second coke. When you glance back up at the stage, Eddie’s eyes meet yours. He announces into the microphone, “This last song is about, um, wanting to tell someone how you feel and being too chickenshit to do it even though you kind of feel like maybe they’re into you too but also maybe they’re not and it would screw up everything you already have with them.” You hear someone at the bar yell, “shut up!” but all you can focus on is Eddie and the words he just spoke to the entire room. He’s focused on the floor as the first notes start to play and as it picks up, his eyes find yours again. They’re shy but sure of himself. The beginning of the song is instrumental, and you find yourself wondering, were those words for me? Did he just admit to having feelings… for me? But you suppose its possible he could have been talking about someone else, someone like… Chrissy. But he looked at you. You listen in as the song continues. One lyric stands out from the rest: when I say I love you I mean it. He finds your eyes as he sings and raises his hand in what you think at first is the rock hand sign but then you see his thumb. It is your love sign. When I say I love you, I mean it. Your breath catches in your throat as the song comes to a close. The band bid their farewells to the room and start packing up their gear. Eddie has his guitar case slung over his shoulder as he approaches your table. He slides into the booth across from you.

“So?” he asks coyly.

You think you have it all figured out but for fear of jumping to conclusions you ask, “What?”

He moves his arms out in front of him and leans forward on the table between you. He twists the rings on his fingers as he speaks, “Do you believe me now?”

You hesitate to answer, not because you don’t believe him but because you can’t find quite the right words to say. He carefully places his hand over yours and explains, “That song I just played, those words, weren’t for Chrissy. They weren’t for anybody,” he pauses, nervously, “but you.”

You let out a shaky breath as his words hit you. Once again, you’re left feeling speechless. Quietly, he begs, “Please say something.”

Without breaking eye contact, because you can’t bear to blink and miss this moment, you find the courage to admit, “I really liked your song… I really like you.” At this, he breaks into a toothy grin and squeezes your hand. With your other hand you give him your secret sign and he returns it, both of you feeling the relief of requited love.

“Hey, do you want to go? I really want to be with you away from all of this.” He gestures to the crowded room.

“Yes,” you give him a small smile. He grabs your hand and gently tugs you towards the door.

When you get to his car, you stand leaning on the passenger door, watching him put his beloved guitar in the back seat. The energy has shifted between you. Whereas before the show, things were awkward and full of anxious feelings. Now, there is only a few minutes of daylight left but everything feels shiny and new. As Eddie closes the back door of his car, he steps closer to you. Eyes locked on each other; his hands find their way to your waist. “Is this okay?” he asks gently.

“Yes” you reply. You’re so focused on him and the electricity running through your skin beneath his touch, that you can barely hear your own words. His face is only inches from yours now.

He pulls back just a little when he verifies your answer with, “Are you sure? Because if you feel like this is going too fast at any point, we can absolutely take things- “

“Eddie, this is perfect.” His eyes flicker between your eyes and your lips. Yours do the same and you can’t help but think about how many times you’ve imagined his soft lips on your own. This is not your imagination now. You’re both savoring the moment, slowly getting closer and closer. You feel his lips brush yours and a feeling ignites in your stomach. Finally, his lips meet yours and you melt together. Your mouth begins to open more as you feel his tongue. It all starts to blur together, your mouth moving against his. You had worried it would be awkward with all the history that you share, but its not. You fit together like you were made for this moment.

When he pulls away, you keep reaching for more. You want to drink him in, you want to be closer to him than physically possible. Short of breath he whispers, “Here, let’s get in the car.” You wordlessly nod, willing to do whatever it takes to feel him back on your mouth. He opens the door to the back seat again, gets in, and moves the guitar to the front seat. He motions for you to get in and growls, “Come here.” His voice dripping with desire. You eagerly step in, shut the door, and climb onto his lap. His mouth finds yours while your legs straddle his thighs, and his hands once again make their way to your waist. You stay like that for a moment and then he pulls his head back and starts kissing down your chin and onto your neck. His hands move underneath your shirt, and you feel the coolness of the metal rings on your sides and stomach. When his hands touch your breasts, you tilt your head back and stifle a moan.

He takes the opportunity to ask in a low voice, “Does that feel good, princess?” The nickname is one you’ve never heard from him, but it is your new favorite. You look back at him and nod, then hungrily kiss him again. You feel him growing hard against his jeans. It sends you reeling, and you kiss down his neck this time.

“I’ve wanted you for so long, y/n. Sorry if that’s weird but oh my god, when you come over to my place in those tiny fucking shorts and no bra. It’s like you’re trying to kill me.” His words come out breathy against your ear and his eyes are dark with lust. You hadn’t considered it but maybe you had been trying to push him over the edge with those clothes.

“I’ve wanted you too. Ughhh-“ you take a sharp breath in as he sucks at a spot on your neck, “I’ve wanted you so much Eddie. Like when you take your shirt off when you’re practicing in your room, or when you’re on stage. Oh my god, it’s like you know how you look up there and you use it against me just by looking at me.” Your words bring a groan from his throat. He kisses you again and when you shift slightly on his lap, he moans again into your mouth.

It takes all of your strength to pull back from him. You stay on his lap, but he worriedly asks, “What’s wrong? Is everything okay?” He pulls his hands from your stomach and cups your face.

Breathlessly you manage, “Yes this is perfect. But, Eddie, I really really like you. And I want to take it slow. I want this to be really special.” You have to force yourself not to fall back into his pink swollen lips.

He assures you, “Yes, definitely. I want this to be special too. This isn’t a one-night stand or anything- at least not for me. I want to make you feel good when you’re ready, when we’re ready.” He moves a rogue strand of hair off your face.

You smile and lean in close to his ear then whisper, “I want you to make me feel good so bad. It will happen soon, I promise.” You place one last slow, soft kiss on his mouth then move off his lap and into the seat next to him.

“Oh my fucking god, man. You’re so perfect.” He takes a few breaths and jokes, “Do you think there’s some kind of weird disease you can get from being too turned on? If there is, I think you’re gonna give it to me.” He was trying to turn the mood playful again, but it only made you want him more.

“Take me home, Munson.” You bite back a smile and climb over the seat. He shakes his head in disbelief of what your normal night turned into. When he slides into the driver’s seat, he puts the keys in the ignition and intertwines his fingers with yours. You hold hands the whole way home.

Given how apparently I’m immune to playing OW games without recording them now, you’ll audibly hear my thoughts within the next few weeks (I’m posting tomorrow because I’m an absolute maniac), BUT I WANNA SAY THINGS HERE BECAUSE APPRECIATION CAN’T WAIT THAT LONG!

Back to the Our Cinderella topic, I have only played Genzou’s route as of now (I’m sure that’s hardly surprising, he is my fav), but the others are next. Their time is coming. They cannot escape. SO SPOILERS FOR GENZOU’S ROUTE!

First off, I saw you included the little dancing in front of TV Iggy pose and the joy I felt seeing it was off the charts. I kept bringing it up, I was very happy. And seeing Iggy moving about was really cool in general, even without the novelty of seeing a suggestion I made exist in the game.

NEXT UP! Genzou drunk singing is an image I didn’t know I needed, thank you for the visual and the brain food. BUT ALSO I HAVE BEEN CONNECTING JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR SONGS TO OW FOR SO LONG AND HEARING THE MUSICAL BE MENTIONED BY GENZOU THREW ME FOR A LOOP. Great musical, very nice. Last Supper reminds me of Genzou and Orlam. Judas’s voice in general reminds me of Orlam. Musicals and OW can further connect in my brain hobby drawer.

The text interactions in general were really funny, actually. I liked the absolute chaos that was Iggy and Genzou’s text conversations, I was laughing while trying to read a lot of the time. I remember the aforementioned drunk singing conversation and the puddle one both got me pretty good while I was reading, and it was overall fun to see more lighthearted conversations from the characters, even if it’s in a different universe from the main canon.

To end things off, ‘cause again 1) I haven’t finished all the game’s routes yet, and 2) you’ll be able to hear my thoughts in the moment if you choose in future anyways, I wanna mention the version of Cinderella Bucks tells at the end? I can’t get it out of my head. When I was thinking about the game after having just played it, my mind kept flashing back to CinderJesus. It absolutely decimated my brain function, but in a very fun way. More slice-of-life Bucks, please, she’s peak comedy.

Very fun game, 10/10, very sad I couldn’t buy the Kirby in the first playthrough but it’s on my to-do list, aaaand yeah! Thank you for making this! I loved every minute of it, and I’m really excited to play the remaining routes once my irl festivities are over.

Pretty sure I've shared this before in a question like this, but too bad. I just love the tension that builds in this sequence (and the release that comes immediately after this; spoiler alert: Alex runs). From Chapter 7 of Nova, Baby:

Diego chokes out a fake laugh, but there is real fear in his eyes now. “I’m sure I do not know what you’re talking about. You know my customers are never for sale.” “So it wasn’t money, then,” Alex surmises. It’s not that surprising. Batista is good at hitting people where it hurts. Diego says nothing. “How long do I have?” Alex asks. Out in front of the store, a car door slams. “Better for you if you don’t run,” Diego murmurs. Fat chance of that.

11. What do you envy in other writers?

Oh, a number of things. The biggest ones are probably humor—I think my writing can be reasonably funny but not the kind of side-splitting hysterical one-liners some people pull off—and really poetic, beautiful language. Sometimes when I read a really achingly beautiful work I feel like giving up lmao. Oh, and some people just seem to be able to pull off effortlessly sexy writing—not even talking about smut here, but just the overall vibes of the work. I mean, it's probably not effortless, knowing what I know about writing, but it feels that way.

20. Tell us the meta about your writing that you really want to ramble to people about (symbolism you’ve included, character or relationship development that you love, hidden references, callbacks or clues for future scenes?)

Oh man, the meta question. I do love talking about meta in my writing but I never know which fic to pick when people ask me these questions. Ok, this time, instead of focusing on one work, I'm including one piece of trivia about the last 5 works I published lmao.

The post-blowjob scene in Falling Down the Stairs of Your Smile was added at the last minute (literally I had already uploaded a draft to AO3 before I went back and added it) because I just got it in my head that I really needed a moment of Henry telling Alex to stay. I love thinking about all the ways that would fundamentally change their relationship from the beginning.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, I did a fair amount of reading about people surviving on rafts in the ocean for Enemies of the Ocean. There are lots of crazy stories out there, and one of them—Steve Callahan—is referenced in the fic. The most insane part about THAT is that Callahan's boat was called the Napoleon Solo. Yes, really. Too bad the story was for a different fandom.

The sir/daddy pronouns joke in Something To Be Proud Of, which several commenters loved, was shamelessly stolen from @dumbpeachjuice. See! I'm not actually that funny. 😂

I really wanted them to get caught in the rain wearing less clothing in Lessons in Foreign Diplomacy (by which I mean wearing only a shirt and pants and not a full waistcoat and jacket combo), but @orchidscript disabused me of the notion that anyone would be strolling the grounds in such scandalous attire lol.

Although I have in fact visited the Harrods Food Hall, I have eaten only one of the cheeses featured in Will You Brie Mine? (manchego), to my deep disappointment. Someone get me some monk's head cheese, stat. Also I went back and forth about whether to make Henry a baker or confectioner or something of the sort, but the man gives cheese recommendations in canon! How could I resist?

Jee is on the borderline, in the sense that I think people often write him as a father figure for Zuko in fics. It's a pretty logical extrapolation from him learning Zuko's backstory in canon, but it's not actually canon so I don't think he'd qualify. I'm also not sure he meets the two-episode criteria - he was probably in the background but I only really remember him in "The Storm".

I also definitely remember someone mentioning Chit Sang but they seem to have deleted their tag. Was it because I posted about how not all older men count? I meant it to be kind of jokingly serious, Committing To The Bit, but that's hard to convey online. I'm not actually offended, and lord knows I have no room to judge when it comes to liking minor characters. episode 6, here we go again... lmao i literally... had this post open, was writing up my final thoughts and my cat jumped up on my laptop and i fuckin lost everything. no ctrl-z to help me i have no idea what happened gdi lmao

so i will try to remember what it was i wrote initially

cowardly belmeria winston. i do wish she'd received some punishment for being literally in charge of human experimentation at peil. i'm so glad prospera uses her guilt against her

so like this is the line that made everyone go what the fuckkkkkk right? assuming they werent speedwatching and just ignored the fact suletta is 17 and belmeria is referring to the vanadis incident here

all the double take lines in this show are so amazing. like yea this doenst mean anything on first watch because of course suletta is her daugher but hohoho

honestly love the idea that suletta went to earth house for comfort after they found out what happened with el4n and his unknown (to them) 180 towards suletta. and part of that group of people comforting suletta includes miorine even if she does have to be all tsundere about it

i do wonder how angry she must have been that el4n was a dick to suletta though. imagine if shes playing her little shooty game on her phone to blow off steam here just like she did in ep 2 in the bathroom

random note: once chuchu calms down a few episodes back, miorine just is a staple at earth house just like suletta

god fuck you tumblr for ruining my og post. i had written a whole thing about this frame and how i appreciated that gwitch never let miscommunication/misunderstanding tropes get in the way of anything (i know some people would argue otherwise because of the break up arc but i dont agree with them).

i really really hope that by this point in the story people werent still mean to suletta at school. she just sounds so fuckin dejected over her potential new friend turning on her so suddenly that it's hard not to imagine that people would pretend to be nice and then just make fun of her like those 3 girls did in episode 1

episode 6 definitely marks a turning point for the series i think where we finally start leaving behind the slice of life school stuff we've been seeing and all the mysteries begin to pile up reminding you that the beginning of this whole story was a tragedy

So "Reaching in the Dark" is my Agron POV companion to my ridiculously long Nasir Missing Scenes fic ("Family Pulled From the Flood" and both titles come from Florence and the Machine's song "End of Love" because I'm dramatic lmao). This one is fixing to be EVEN MORE ridiculous in length and scope because instead of 2 seasons worth of missing scenes it's 3 and I'm digging into the Agron and Duro relationship for a huge chunk of it :P

I'm gonna leave the Sha're and Teal'c party time question for now (because it's gonna be answered in another ask that another friend sent me), and wander straight into some sneak peeks at those Greasy Gladiator Boys:

That night, as he and Duro sat in the quiet, with so many gladiators absent the cells to attend the party upstairs, Agron pulled his sleeping mat closer to Duro’s and spoke quietly. “Do you recall that pond near home? With the ducks?” Duro coughed out a pained laugh, turning his head to look at Agron in slight confusion. “I recall it, though I know not why you bring it to mind.” “Do you remember when you tried to race me to the shore and merely managed to stumble and smash your fucking face on a tree?” Agron continued, smiling. Duro returned the smile. “When you begged me not to tell our mother, but I was already bleeding all over everything?” Agron sighed, nodding and keeping silent for a moment as he recollected the day. He looked at the ceiling of their cell, imagining anew the mix of panic and admonishment on the face of their mother, remembering his own anguish at having caused Duro to fall. Remembering that he had felt that same hollow anxiousness when forced to watch his brother bleed. After a beat, though, he spoke in a low, teasing tone, “Since that day, your nose has been slightly crooked. Perhaps there is a chance that Crixus has now seen it fixed?” Duro scoffed and rolled over to punch Agron on the arm, though the action came without any true fire. Agron laughed, pushing his brother’s hand away as easily as swatting a fly, and he felt a deluge of unspoken words trapped in his throat. He wished he could explain to Duro that there was nothing in this world he wanted less than to see him hurt, but that circumstances had stolen from him all choice in the matter. He wished he could swear to Duro a lifetime of protection and safety. But he could only make his brother laugh at the memories that made Agron himself feel nauseous, and he could only offer the meager comfort of his presence.

Actually, you know what the funniest thing about shipping Leaf or any of the first four gen girls is? THEY'RE ALL WAY OLDER. You'd think the biggest complaint fandom would have is going nooOOO they're ELEVEN. Except for the part where Gen 1 and 3 happen at the same time. As do Gen 2 and 4. With a three year timeskip. And then a TWELVE year timeskip. Two more; BW2 and XY happen at the same time. Add another year for Alola. Red and Blue are stated to be like. I think it was 31 in the S/M/USUM games last I checked. Leaf would be almost 10 years older than Leon (his Charmander could've been a child of Red's Charizard for all we know! I actually like to write Kantrio visiting Galar and inspiring the next gen of trainers in game-verse.) Instead I'm mostly meddling around in the anime-verse which is mostly a found-family fic so all my ships are really just joked about. Doesn't mean I haven't recycled through a ship or two as I was playing around with the fic though lol, but alas the interest wore off and I need to stick with my themes. I'm curious though, is Leaf and Green endgame for you? Also LOVE whatever you're doing including Mizuki in your Au. I think the funniest thing about the core series timeline topic is the fact that technically, according to several developers, there actually IS no true canon timeline.

Masuda: It starts to get a little complicated if you pay too much attention to timelines. Like, there might be a professor that appears, and it wouldn’t make sense at all if we applied that kind of timeline logic. So we try not to apply it too rigorously.

Matsumiya: Elapsed time is secret. Imagine freely!

I stated this in the last ask I answered, but Sisterhood operates under a different timeline than the "canon" one. For example, the events of SwSh take place after HGSS/DPP and before SM/USUM, which takes place before B2W2/SV. BW also takes place at the same time as XY, and between FRLG/ORAS and HGSS/DPP.

I do have a visual guide, for reference.

As for Leaf and Green being endgame, I've considered Sisterhood being somewhat similar to an otome game, in the sense that the protagonists have a selection of boys they could date in a series of alternate story paths. However, for most of them there is someone who I consider their "true" love interest in Sisterhood.

For Leaf, this is Green. For Touko, this is N. For Haruka, this is Steven. For Hikari/Akari, this is Volo. And so on.

Some of the male protagonists are the sibling of the female protagonists in Sisterhood: Leaf is Red's younger twin sister, Touko is Touya's older twin sister, Gloria is Victor's younger sister by two years, and Juliana is the older twin sister of Florian. As a sidenote, Gloria and Juliana are first cousins.

Even when they normally wouldn't appear in canon if not chosen as the protagonist, every character has a role in Sisterhood somewhere. Kris is Kotone's friendly (but still tough) rival!

And speaking of Leaf's Raichu, 'Kaminari' was sort of a beta name until I found something else I liked better.

This ended up being 'Lumine'.

Hey can i ask u something? I just finished rereading gintama again and read the final chapter, and kinda stumbled to ur blog. Do you think in the end Takasugi kind of ressuracted, reincarnated, or not? It's really bothering me since he is my fav character and besides lackness that i felt towards his story, his 'death' chapter was delivered... so great, and i dont think ressuraction was needed:( isnt that mean he becomes immortal, again?

Hello! Thank you very much for your question. Sorry for the late reply, I didn't see your message because I was on hiatus due to the end of Gintama lmao

I consider the death scene very beautiful, and it shows that there was a lot of love behind it. In fact, Sorachi himself admitted that he cried while he was drawing it (didn't we all?). However, I think when Takasugi's death is judged only by the scene itself and not also by the context, you miss the forest for the trees. (I previously talked about his death in this post.)

Other people and I have discussed the ending as such, so I’ll now address the circumstances surrounding the end of Gintama before delving into Takasugi’s possible resurrection. I'll try to analyze what happened from other angles, including information both inside and outside of the series, like the fanbook released some time ago.

The prolongued ending

Damn Manabe you could've done a better job. And I blame you for all the Utsuro crap, even if it wasn't your idea, you should've stopped it!

Weekly Shōnen Jump, where Gintama was published, has a system in which it’s announced half a year in advance when a series is about to end, to give it a conclusion in that time. Nevertheless, Sorachi exceeded this deadline, and for three years was unable to finish the series. Faced with this, they moved it to Jump Giga, where he would’ve three extra chapters with more pages and more time as it was a monthly publication. But once again he was unable to finish it and ended up concluding it through the Gintama App.

Even though at the time we all laughed at it, in hindsight the series did suffer from this. Especially if we consider that Sorachi's intention was to defeat Utsuro in Weekly Shōnen Jump and then use the other magazine just to have an epilogue. Even in the last chapter uploaded to the application they made him cut four pages. This denotes that it was a turbulent period, and the end was extremely hasty.

I think what happened in the end was Sorachi's attempt to squeeze ideas into a short amount of time. Takasugi and Zura weren’t present to defeat Utsuro, despite foreshadowing it. Thus, because he didn’t pay enough attention to the relationship between the members of the Shouka Sonjuku, the second part of Silver Soul arc emerged, in which Utsuro/Shouyo was revived and there was a greater focus on the connection between Takasugi and Gintoki. I explain this to emphasize that there wasn’t enough planning to properly develop and conclude what happened to Takasugi.

Takasugi's fate

The last page of the manga referring to what happened to Takasugi strongly suggests that he revived, due to the presence of a newborn baby in one of the dragon holes (places where altana veins sprout), along with dialogue from Sakamoto expressing, essentially, the high probability that Shouyo intervened to save him from death when his corpse was sucked into the terminal’s altana.

However, in the fanbook, a page is dedicated to what happened to Takasugi. Sorachi is frank, revealing he intentionally left it vague to avoid giving a clear answer that might disappoint fans. Also, once again he alludes to the fact that he didn't have more pages to delve into what happened, so he opted to just put more jokes, thinking that was enough.

In said fanbook, Sorachi chats with his former editors about various topics, including Takasugi's death, which he repeatedly avoids talking about. He says it's weird having to explain everything. Nonetheless, the others insist with questions. Among the most important things to salvage, he clarifies Takasugi’d already been sort of dead when he lost Shouyo, and he was just looking for a way to die. He also indicates he doesn't consider that Takasugi needed to be saved because he already was. Instead, he was going for the image of saving the Kiheitai beyond whether or not the baby was Takasugi. This gives me the impression that Sorachi didn’t actually plan to revive him.

I fundamentally disagree with the above point of view. Although I'm not a fan of resurrections, I think his rebirth would make sense, given that it's an element already introduced in the series. Also, I believe it's necessary because it didn't make sense to kill him in the first place, both for consistency on a character level and on a series level.

Now, regarding his possible immortality, I really wish he isn’t. Since it was never explained how that or the altana worked, I can't say for sure. But, considering the dialogue of the master protecting his disciples, it wouldn’t be logical for Shouyo to sentence Takasugi to live an immortal life. What would make the most sense is for Takasugi to live in a normal body with his own memories, experiencing both suffering and happiness, just like everyone else.

Regarding his growth as a normal human or abnormally by the altana, it’s even more difficult to discern. I think if he kept his memories, it would make sense for him to grow at an accelerated rate just like Shouyo, until the altana runs out at some point.

Deliverance from sin?

Since the concept is used on several occasions, I would like to comment on what is meant by “salvation”, a term closely related to religious beliefs. The perspective I’ll take in this part is that of Shinto and Buddhism, the predominant and deeply connected religions of Japan.

In both cases, the most common path after death is reincarnation. In Shinto, the concept of salvation is based upon the belief that all living things have an essence, soul, or spirit known as kami. This lives among us rather than in Heaven or Hell. Buddhists believe in reincarnation after death, known as rebirth. Depending on the actions a person has done during their life (karma), they’re more or less likely to be reborn as a lower or higher being. If one has a multitude of good actions, one is likely to be reborn as a human.

In Buddhism, anyone who understands Buddha's teachings can attain salvation. This includes the understanding that since suffering is a part of life, one must find ways to overcome it. In this regard, I don’t consider that Takasugi has been “saved” in the more traditional sense of the word, quite the contrary. As referenced, the true way to find salvation isn’t to die to stop suffering, but to continue living despite it, as Gintoki has shown.

From now on

Sorachi explains he’s aware that the people who liked Takasugi aren’t as happy with how he ended up, and hints he knows the ending could’ve been better. This, coupled with the fact that he's been inactive for so long after Gintama ended (despite declaring his intentions to start another series) makes me think there might be more Gintama content in the future.

Could it be wishful thinking? Absolutely. But it’s true that Sorachi is interested in making money, and what better than to return to his star series with a question that interests many fans? Maybe it's something he didn't plan on doing. Do I take it? Without a second thought.

The next Gintama festival will take place on March 19, 2023. Perhaps nothing will happen. But hope is the last thing that dies. Being a successful franchise, I think it's very likely that in the near or distant future they’ll release more material showing what happened to Takasugi.

TL;DR: I think it would be more consistent with the character and the series for him to be resurrected, keeping his memories, possibly growth-accelerated by the altana until it finally fades from his body. This would allow him to keep a mortal body. But no one can say for sure what will happen.

I’m still loving it, though: I like Constance and Moira better than ever, and even the show’s rough edges are entertaining: it’s my favorite mix of gore, suspense, and light camp. Absence made my heart grow fonder!

Hm. Sometimes? It depends on what i need a reference for HNFFH i always try to take my own pics for references when able to; besides always having permission for those, i’m more familiar with my hand structure/items and understand how they work better. it’s also just easier to adjust things if need be- i can’t rotate someone’s hand ever so slightly in a stock photo 😔

(went and checked and it's not in my notes) ok but at some point I wrote down a character who uses a curse to their advantage, and then I read alcatraz and was like oh that's not what I meant but I guess it's fun, but THIS. SO WELL. and at some other point I wrote a short story about a functionally invisible character and that was before i read the schwa was here and this is actually one of my favorite tropes but this is the best one. this is absolutely the best one. endorsing dark one forgotten as the best functionally invisible story

I have not been making sanderson reread update posts, and I read rithmatist and all of reckoners, but I'd already read most of those and there's nothing notable about lux except the plot holes and they didn't hit me hard like fucking dark one forgotten did. i barely knew this existed. It came out during the year of sanderson and yet nobody includes it in the book count. (There were 8 books/stories released, cowards, not 5.) but also I feel the need to mention that I thought dark one was quite good as well, but also that it feels like only the first chapter of a story so I can't say much else as of yet, I guess?
