I know you've criticized TOH's magic system as a whole before, but what are your thoughts on the actual types of coven magic themselves? (abomination, bard, beast keeping, construction, healing, illusion, oracle, plant, potions)

I mean, I like magic enough to like just about any school of magic. If I had any real issue with them it's that Bard is amongst them. I know that may seem weird but the rest are actually very specific, to a degree of being kind of... material. Illusion is the closest to being different but you still have a specific idea of what sort of spell is being cast, even if it falls into a more broad category than specifically plant instead of Earth (I'll get back to this point). Bard on the other hand? As far as we can tell in TOH, the biggest thing about it seems to be that it designates that you actually use a spellcasting focus instead of a spell circle but otherwise you can do as you please. Otherwise, why is it that they can literally summon storm clouds and lightning? Why is bard magic also akin to weather magic?

And that's kind of the issue I have with trying to actually talk about each. Do I like plant magic? Sure. Do I like construction magic? Sure. Why are these two different covens though when what seems to be the material different between the two is that one's power is flexible while the other makes concrete pillars? Maybe if we saw them actually use their magic for more than offense that'd be one thing but as it is, you have to wonder why they aren't one coven. Or hell, where do medicinal plants fall into this system? Do they not have potions of healing or potions of growth because they cross into another coven's territory?

And all of this excludes an evocation coven. In D&D, that's the school of magic that does fireballs but there IS NO FIREBALL COVEN!?

Sigh.

So yeah, it's kind of hard for me to judge them individually because most of them are just very basic. And that's just conceptually. If we go by what the show shows us: Potions: Boring and barely used.

Plant: SURE HOPE YOU LIKE VINES! And then one toxin despite the fact that you'd assume that was a potion coven thing.

Abomination: Definitely the coolest by asking what happens when you focus on golem making but also just does whatever the writer wants it to. Otherwise, why the fuck does it have a teleportation spell? Let alone one that doesn't require a golem. Also they never actually do anything with the golems they make except turn them into robots and that's not interesting.

Bard: Listed my issues above, especially since clearly much of its magic just does whatever, regardless of if you can hear it or not.

Healing: Pretty much not in the show.

Illusion: Fucked over by the show lying about it not being able to affect real objects and the show never actually does anything interesting with it and when it has fun with it, it's only once for the actual potential of the coven.

Beast Keeping: We see it only a couple times and it looks cool but is ill defined and doesn't seem to actually be familiar based. In fact, with how easy it seems to be for witches to call upon creatures and there being a super mode for it, it comes off as just an objectively better form of what abomination magic's main gimmick is.

Construction: Has the amazing fact of having power GLYPHS when glyphs are supposed to be Luz's thing and also they never come back. Otherwise, it's literally just stone pillars. Boring.

Oracle: We never actually see anyone tell the future or have future sight be a plot point of the show so entirely pointless. Otherwise, ghosts and telepathy, the latter of which seems to have been through an artifact and not through an oracle power, so again: Boring. Hell, the only thing we ever see one of their spirits do is attack like any old golem or beast so that's THREE covens where they effectively all do the same thing. Also the second coven who's primary color is purple.

And if you're going "Well, what about using them outside of the show?" I don't think that's a good question. It's MAGIC. It can do quite literally whatever the fuck you want. It is only limited by the rules of your setting and your imagination. As there effectively zero rules on what any of these covens can actually do, no power limits, it was only ever the limits of the creators.

And that only made it ever look like the creators lacked any creativity. Or, bare minimum, lacked interest in their magic to make it creative and distinct in anyway.

The confession was sort of a mutual thing

You two confessed at the same time and it wasn't planned at allq

Luz is the kind of girlfriend to do all the silly things with.

She loves taking you on spontaneous dates and do random activities that don't really make sense

She loves to teach you how to use glyphs

Luz also loves to read her favorite book series with you

Nature dates are her favorite because it just means alone time between you two and nothing to overwhelming

She's great to have around when you're sad

Brings you anything you need

Loves to cuddle you when you're sad or crying

Words of affirmation are her best friend

Sometimes she thinks you're better than her and its a thought she doesn't like having

Will go to you about it though and you two talk it out

Cringy movie marathons are another thing you two would do together

When she's sad, she doesn't tell you on account of showing her feelings is something she struggles with

You do notice her patterns of when she is sad though after a few months of being with her

You confront her about it and help her talk it out

After you both watch silly internet videos and try to see which of your friends is like them the most

Her mom things you're the sweetest ever and loves to talk to you

She thinks of you as like a guard for her daughter emotionally wise

As in you report to her if Luz is feeling upset, only with Luz permission to share though

AMITY

You were the one who had to make the first move and confess because she didn't know how nor could she bring herself too

She thought you would find her weird at first but was in shock when you told her that you liked her

Amity is the kind of girlfriend who likes to chill at home or in a secluded spot like a library

Physical touch startles her so handholding is a good start for her

When you first kissed her though she lost her mind and tried to think of a reason why you would do that

Amity loves to read to you and tell you stories of her family, mainly Ed and Emira's shenanigans

She doesn't mind any date idea as long as your there with her

If you have pierced ears then you would get matching earrings

You two paint each other's nails and just talk

Amity doesn't know what to do when your sad since she wasn't taught how to healthily deal with them

But she will try and hug you and talk it out

Its hard for her to face you when she finds herself feeling sad

She doesn't want you to think she's weak and make fun or her

But once you catch on you reassure her and comfort her

She finds it weird and self deprecates herself in front of you saying she's weak for making you put up with her

You show her silly cat videos to help her feel better

She tries to deny the fact that it helps her, but it really does

She's afraid of you meeting her family but mostly her mom

You first met her dad and he actually liked you and would vouch for you if you were to meet Amity's mom

Whenever her mom asks about you, Amity sort of panics and tries to avoid her whenever she sees her when your with her

WILLOW

She actually confessed to you first, but it was accidental

Willow just came up to you and you two started debating who liked who more and she accidentally said she loved you

Both of you were blushing so hard and so you said she won

As a reward she won you as a partner

It was a really cute interaction in all actuality

Forest dates and butterfly gardens are a must for her

She loves to gush about all the different plants that are around you both

She's the kind of girlfriend to just take things very slow and calm taking in consideration your boundaries

Whenever your sad she always brings you bright and color flowers that had silly inspirational quotes Luz gave her

She would also teach you coping skills that helped her

If she's sad, she's not afraid to tell you

She is really open about what is making her upset and you help her talk through it

Sometimes you help her go through the coping skills she taught you

To help her feel better you hold her and tell her how amazing she is

You two are plant parents all the way and you give the plants silly names

Once you named one of her plants Deryl that was when all the silly name saga started

Adores when you call her a witch and shut down any off hand comments about her

Her parents absolutely adore you

She was a bit embarrassed at first because they were telling you stories about when she was a younger kid

Warmed up to you and her parents interacting and loved having you over and talking with them

GUS

He confessed to you first with Willow's help

It was planned out and sort of excessive but it was the best way he could get his message across

Lots of illusions were used as decorations and words that said "I Like You Y/n!" with firework hearts

You accepted his confession of course and he was over the moon

Gus is the type of boyfriend to want to go to amusement parks and concerts with you

Or just simple Cafes that he finds interesting

It all depends on your mood in all honesty

He loves to show you all his illusions he has been working on and all the goofy things you request becoming a reality

He loves hearing you praise him for all the hard work he has been doing since it's something he sort of needs to hear

Not many tell him that but hearing it from you is so heart warming

When you're sad, he catches on right away

He makes silly little illusions of things that make you giggle

And sometimes mini Guses to remind you how much he cares and loves you

When he's sad its hard to catch

He is sort of a master at hiding his emotions and isolating himself from others so no one can really catch him crying

But when you do find him you are quick to reassure him and help him breathe

He appreciates you greatly for being there and helping him through hard times

Meeting his dad was a tough thing to do

Since Gus's dad seemed to be pretty busy with work, it was hard to catch him on a free day

But once you and his dad did meet, it was an instant click and Gus is glad his dad approves of you

HUNTER

You had to be the one to confess first

There was no way Hunter would be able to confess to you, especially with his pride

So when Flapjack was pushing Hunter to a place that wasn't near the city he was concerned

But when Hunter saw you he was put at ease

Literally cried when you told him you liked him more than a friend

Hunter is the type of boyfriend who would be happy just with you holding his hand anywhere

No matter where you go, he's content as long as you're there with him

He sometimes get insecure because there isn't much he can show you that is cool magic wise

But when there's a fight and your there, he does show off a bit

His top priority would be protecting you

Whenever you're sad, he is unsure what to do

The only thing he can really do is hug you and just shut down any negative thoughts you have about yourself with compliments

When it comes to him though, he is scared to be sad in front of you

He was taught to hold his emotions in and not be a burden to any one

So when you confront him about it, he just breaks and spills, with much regret of doing so

However you help him calm down and talk about what has been bothering him

You bring him outside to just watch the sky to help him feel better

He is afraid of his uncle finding out abut him being with you

Mainly because of the fear of his uncle hurting you or using you as a manipulative mechanism

So never ever going to meet Belos and he prefers to keep it that way

KING

Being King's bestest friend means that you are his number one

And being his number one means you being his 2nd in command

He loves when you play with him and give him 100% of your attention

His brain explodes when you actually want to learn about demons

Some one is actually interested and he didn't have to beg them?

He does make you take notes but nothing serious

Just your favorite demon and why

He does get sort of jealous when someone else occupies your time but he has his ways of distracting you

Plan A being throwing Francois at you and asking if you've seen his plush

Plan B would be sitting in your lap and just napping there forcing you to stay there with him

You just giggle at his antics because its not hurting anyone and he just wants your attention

Loves when you include him in your activities

Loves it more when you don't get upset at him for making simple mistakes

Cuddles are a must when you're sad

As well as a tea party with all his henchmen

If its a matter he can't really help with or has no knowledge in then he'll get Luz or Eda, whoever is closest and not occupied with something

Whenever he's sad, you are the first to know because he runs to you

He hugs you and you cuddle him really closely

You don't leave him alone until he feels better and when he does he still clings to you

Eda and Lilith adore you and thank you for keeping King busy while they have important things to do

EDA

It was odd that you happened to worm your way into Eda's heart so fast

It was quicker than Luz and that's saying something

She loves having you around and not just because you're free labor to her

She feels at ease a lot more with you around and like the curse isn't there

She was scared when you first saw her owl beast form

You weren't scared of her though and listened to Luz to have the cure close to you

Whenever you go on adventures, she isn't far behind watching over you

She is always ready to jump in if a situation gets violent

People see you as her keeper in a sense of keeper her chilled out

She considers you her child at this point

She'll drag you to do chores with her or for her, it all depends on her mood

Whenever Eda's around people can expect you to not be so far behind

People also know to leave you alone unless they want an angry owl lady on their hands

Whenever your sad she ties to bring you whatever comfort she can

But of course is a bit awkward when it comes to hugging

Bring in the cheesy words Luz taught her

When ever she is sad though she hides it real well

It takes a lot of convincing to talk about her feelings but when she does you are there to bring whatever comfort you can

Eda knows King loves being with you and considers you his sibling

Lilith is concerned about you spending so much time with Eda and how she might be impacting you but none the less she thinks your a good kid and you'll make the right decisions (which you wont)

LILITH

Its even a bigger surprise to get Lilith to become so attached to you

She loves how attentive you are

You actually take interest in subjects that she learns and reads about

She teaches you all sorts of things and of course notes are a must

Lilith just doesn't want you to forget the information you were given

Loves to take you on small outings to little cafes and chores

She considered you her child after a month of knowing you

Protecting you is a must

Oh you're going somewhere? Well not without Lilith

It takes a lot to convince her to stay put and when she says she'll stay, she's actually lurking spying on you

If someone even lays one harmful hand on you she is out and ready to fight

You somehow get Lilith to lighten up and agree to more things that she really wouldn't

When Lilith finds you sad she is immediately there with a bunch of blankets and ice cream

Lilith is actually a really good person to gossip too and she always makes it funny

Finding her sad is a really rare thing though

She is used to dealing with her emotions on her own and that hasn't changed

But on the rare occasions where she shows you some vulnerability you give her all the comfort you can

Hugs and cuddles as well as words of affirmation and she is so grateful for you

Eda is glad that you're helping Lilith out of her stiff shell a bit and showing more emotion than she used too

Hooty becomes your closest friend as well as King but Hooty more because Lilith drags you to their conversations when she visits The Owl House

have you read (ugh) Harry Potter and if so how do you compare it to TOH ( also let’s burn Rowling at a stake lmao)

I grew up with Harry Potter so it was a pretty big part of my childhood. It was a fun, fantasy series that inspired millions of children worldwide and had a considerable impact on children's literature. Given its popularity and position in the zeitgeist, it was inevitable that people would be inspired by it, analyze it, criticize it, mock it, etc.

Now I haven't read HP in a long time and it's been a hot minute since I've watched the movies but I think I remember enough. It's also difficult (and probably unfair) to compare TOH and HP because one has 7 books in which to expand its lore and characters while the former only had effectively 2 1/2 seasons. But let's try any way. This got long so there will be more after the cut:

The Owl House is a structurally flawed show and it has a glaring blindspot in how its poc characters are treated but at least it doesn't have offensive tropes such as Jewish-coded goblins and elves who are happy to be slaves.

TOH's biggest strength is probably the likability of its characters and how easy it is to project onto them; Eda is the fun and sassy mentor but struggles with a terrible curse that many people read as a metaphor for chronic illness. Luz is your typical kid protagonist who is curious, excitable, and struggled to fit in at school. Amity was the perfectionist bully but secretly has a soft side. These are all good archetypes for your characters and it's easy to see why they're appealing.

On the other hand, I feel like HP's biggest strength is its world building: Hogwarts feels like a place the reader can step into as do Knockturn Alley, Gringotts, Grimauld Place, the Burrow, 2 Privet Drive, etc. The fact that I can still name all of these places shows the culture impact HP had and just how immersive the books were (and of course, how the movies brought them to life).

I think a big part of this is how HP incorporates magic into its universe: Hogwarts has the moving staircases, a ghost haunting the girl's toilet, floating candles in the Great Hall, the magic makes the setting come alive. When Harry said that Hogwarts was his home, many readers felt the same way.

When I think of the Boiling Isles, I think of how small it feels; there's Hexside, the Emperor's Castle, and the titular Owl House but aside from the last one, none of these places really stand out design wise or even emotionally. Hexside is just another fantasy school except with teeth, and the Castle is just a generic evil overlord castle. And the Owl House only stands out because of Hooty, without him, it's just another house.

As for the magic itself?

Well, the magic in TOH is really inconsistent, especially the glyphs. Here's a post that goes in depth on how poorly the glyphs were incorporated into the show. It's also not terribly creative with its magic: Willow is a plant witch but we only ever see her attack with vines and Gus' Illusion magic is explored in one, maybe two episodes. The only new element that is interesting is Abomination magic, which looks cool but it's basically water bending with goo.

For a show set in another world, it doesn't really do much to distinguish itself from Earth outside of the aesthetics; there's social media, movies, a job fair, and people treat covens like college degrees (which has enormous implications for how poorly done the EC is). It doesn't feel like you're in another world and I think a big part of that is the lack of whimsy in the show.

When Harry Potter explored the castle, the reader did as well, and we were just as amazed and impressed as he was. As Harry explored the wizarding world and all of its creatures and inhabitants, that sense of whimsy and awe never faded. I never got that sense of whimsy when Luz was exploring the Boiling Isles, it felt too similar to home.

If the show had spent more time in season 1 establishing its tone and identity instead of making fun of HP or fantasy tropes in general then we wouldn't have this problem. Hexside is especially guilty of this: look! here's our Parody Sorting Hat! check out our broom game that has nonsensical rules! take that Harry Porber!

As it stands, TOH looks good on paper but it botches the execution of its interesting ideas and concepts. I can see why so many people love it though because some of the things the characters go through are Relatable but for me, I've seen all of this done before and better in other media. If it came out years ago, perhaps it would have left a bigger mark on me, but in the end, TOH has very nice designs but it's undercooked.

ALSO after careful consideration (some light googling) I've come up with middle names for the hexsquad

Luz's middle name is Manuela. It's a feminine form of Manuel which I figured could very well be her dad's full name. Luz's connection and similarities to her dad are very important to her and to the story overall, so an homage to him feels sweet and fitting!

I was torn between Amity's middle name being either Regan or Cordelia. Regan because I thought "little ruler" sounded EXACTLY like something odalia would've chosen for one of her kids, but I think overall I prefer the verbal flow and meaning of Cordelia (which means "heart" btw). I just think it'd be nice if Amity had this imposing last name with a threatening legacy and then a first and middle name that represent the things actually important to her

Back when the toh "next time on..."/"pilot" was released and we all found out that Willows pilot name was Paulina/Polleena (I prefer the latter spelling since it's plant themed! Pollen and whatnot), I saw some people suggest Polleena as her middle name, and the hcs just stuck ever since! It fits since (going off the spelling I decided) pollen helps things to grow, and Willow not only has a very fleshed out arc, she's also the catalyst/important to many others! Also again, it just rolls off the tongue well. Can very clearly picture Harvey or Gilbert saying "Willow Polleena Park >:(" in their Dad Voice.

Since Gus' full name is Augustus, I immediately thought of the Roman emperor and started looking at other Roman names for him, before settling on Antony. The most obvious reason for this is alliteration and the fact it sounds really nice to say "Augustus Antony Porter". His first name means "venerable" or "sacred", and Antony means "priceless". Hence, I think it'd be cute if (consciously or unconsciously) when Perry named him he was just hammering home how much he fucking loves his boy. Alternate ideas with the same scheme though is Julian (comes from Julia which means "youthful", Gus' age is relevant to his character in many ways.)

Hunter...doesn't even have a confirmed last name. In demon realm paperwork? It's probably Deamonne. But as much as I love dadrius, I am also a fan of the "it takes a village" approach and you can pry Hunter Noceda from my cold, dead hands. So no matter who he lives full time with, I hc hunter sees a lot of different people as "family". He'd be excited about it! He went from no parents to, like, 4! That's counting Darius, Camila, Eda and Raine (though tbh I hc the latter as more "cool aunt and her cool partner" in hunters eyes but Dells like a cool grampa to him. He's not gonna turndown the clawthorne name!) All this to say, I think Hunter is an elusive tripple-barreler for last names. So I hc he takes part of his alias from ASIAS and uses that to complete his silly, dramatic name, officially crowning himself "Hunter Jasper Bloodwilliams Noceda-Clawthorne-Deamonne". What a guy. I love him

In conclusion I love giving characters middle names so FUCKING much. Get birth certificate-ed idiot!!!

we have seen on multiple occasions that hunter's response to Conflict is to Dip. HOWEVER i'd argue that w/ people he trusts (e.g. willow and the rest of the hexsquad) he'd be more willing to try and stick a hard situation through honestly

hot take: marriage is just One of Those Things hunter has never heard of being a ward of the local cult. willow proposes and he's like "haha cool. i dont know what this means"

hmmm.... depends on the context. when willow is upset her emotions have always been rlly strong however i think all things considered she has a pretty good hold on them. she's also consciously trying to be positive through each day - on the other hand, hunter has been the Lord of Pessimism for years however bc of that being Sad has just become a Normal thing for him.

who is better at cheering the other up?

they're both good at it just in different ways. willow is good at offering genuine comfort and advice. hunter manages to comfort her because his attempt at comfort is just so laughably bad that it takes away from the pain

who's the one that playfully slaps the other all the time after they make silly jokes?

replace "silly jokes" with "fucked up fact / history presented as though it is normal" and willow is regularly reminding hunter that "hey being left at the top of a mountain isnt actually a healthy childhood experience"

who is more streetwise?

i think they're both streetwise in their own ways - hunter's been Trained in survival situations and other fucked up things in the emperor's coven. he knows how to look after himself after he escapes the coven. willow however - she didnt grow up with those experiences but she HAS been through a lot in her own right and she knows how to handle herself.

who is more wise?

willow 100%. she has common sense. hunter does not

who's the shyest?

hunter Thinks he's confident but when it comes to Emotions and Sappy Things (trademark) he is Not

who boasts about the other more?

Well, I don't not ship them? ksjdbfkjdf I think they're my least favourite of the canonical toh ships though (i go lumity > raeda > huntlow). But they are cute! I think I might have been more invested if toh had gotten a full third season, but as the way thing turned out I just...didn't really get attached kajdfskf. Blame Disney for that one haha. I also don't read much toh fic so that probably plays a role. What made you ship it? - akjfbjbd genuinely just tumblr exposure. i don't think i was paying much attention to their canon interactions when i watched the first 2 seasons, then i just saw so much content about them on tumblr so i was kind of like "oh, this is a thing? i guess that's cool" 😂

(**spoilers for "for the future" below**)

What are your favorite things about the ship? - I think it's obvious that they derive such wholesome, genuine joy from watching each other do things that make them happy. Like... Hunter watching Willow with the plants when they first get back to the boiling isles in "for the future". Or in thanks to them, when Willow tells everyone to leave Hunter alone when he's in cosplay(or whatever she said exactly, i can't remember). I think that's really sweet. Love relationships like that where partners are so supportive of each other.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship? - ok don't hate me for this but i think the least interesting thing that happened to them in "for the future" were the romantic developments. Like don't get me wrong, I loved their interactions. But...I was more interested in what those scenes did for their individual character arcs than the fact it "made them canon". Like. The line about reliable people needing someone to rely on made me cry (then again i was already in tears after the luz and camila scene before that so. took very little to break me again 😂)--that's such a good lesson for willow to learn. It's something I think I needed to learn at her age. It's something I still need to learn. And then for Hunter to be able to open up about how much he cares about her and his friends aksjdbfsbkd. But to me...the magic of that was more friendship than romance. Not that they don't have chemistry, just...if they had been 100% platonic I would have been just as happy. I think I'm just not that invested? kjadfbkj my apologies

Idk maybe its just me but i dont get why theyre s much fuss over the detention track kids They didn't have much time in the episode they were in and jerbo and Barcus barely had lines. SO I just wanna know why I should love them so much with the rest of the fandom. I feel like i'm missing something.

It is true that, compared to other beloved characters, they had a limited time of exposure on screen – can't say I didn't miss them at Grom – but the amount of development they recieved was enough to win most of the audience hearts (me included!)

Why is that? I can list the several reasons people might like them – but the source of all of them is: potential!

Once again TOH presents us a refreshing reading of saturated stereotypes – in this case, the meaning of Troublemakers™ – Instead of a bunch of students who are being punished for slacking off and presenting awful behavior, the Detention Trio represents the exact contrary;

In fact, they are breaking the rules, as it is expected of troublemakers, but instead of disrupting a system of order, they are defying a disrupted system that limits their students more than help them develop – and that is a nice confrontation of the traditional school structure! (And the coven system, if you live in the Boiling Islands)

Although their screen time might seem limitating, it also is liberating: their episode is enough to plant a seed of emphaty for them, which can grow more and more when you think about possible future interactions with Luz, what multitrack abilities that could be useful, or just their overall development within the story and how they'll affect the plot – TOH presents itself as a consistent show, and pushing those characters aside would be a sin for the storytelling;

At last, we can't discard the power of shipping in rising characters' relevance independent of plot;

[Plus, I particularly find their designs really compelling, not many non-pirate characters can pull off a hook as a piercing and still look cool with it so it's a bonus for me]

I made an AU for Thie Owl House where the characters live in the Percy Jackson Universe!!

Luz was made a daughter of Hermes due to the fact that Hermes is a god of thieves, Travelers, and Merchants. I’m pretty sure it’s self explanatory why I thought that fit perfectly lol. I also wanted to make sure the god I chose for with the fact that there’s no father in her family picture (seemingly.)

Amity was made a daughter of Athena due to how she’s the top student in TOH. Athena also fits due to how competitive Amity can be, as Athena is the goddess of wisdom, war, AND strategy. Amity was the Grudgeby team captain so I think it’s safe to say she’s good at strategizing and planning.

Gus was made a son of Hecate due to how he works mainly with illusions, and Hecate is the goddess of Magic and Witchcraft. Originally I had planned to make him a satyr but I very much wanted to do something with his illusions. Hecate also works as we have yet to actually see Gus’ mother in the show.

I made Willow a Satyr to basically be Luz’s Grover, on top of the fact that Satyr’s care very much about nature and plants. Willow is the one responsible for watching over and eventually bringing Luz to Camp Half Blood.

Boscha being a daughter of Ares fits so well as she’s kind of a hot head/bully. Her being a jock and cool kid also works well with her being Ares’ kid.

The AU’s current name is “Welcome to Camp Half Blood”, and I plan on writing a fic for it soon! I hope you all like the idea of it :)

TOH’S One Show War On Magic

That’s a really over dramatic way for me to say TOH is REALLY bad with its magic. Like fucking abysmal. Like I could make probably close to a dozen blogs about its magic alone, especially if I counted its fantasy worldbuilding alongside its magic, but here are some highlights because why not: (again make asks if you want expansion on something) Willow’s magic is way too powerful with no explanation to the point of supporting the coven system. Also nothing is done with it after episode 6 of S1 until S3 Ep 2 and that’s just really bad story telling. Gus’ magic is the same in that he’s so powerful in one magic inherently as to support the coven system. No one’s magical power is consistent as it changes constantly for the needs of the plot. Anyone remember when Willow had a super plant artifact glove and was quite literally, and I mean literally, tossed to the side and knocked out? Luz’s glyphs work entirely off of “It’s magic, we don’t have to explain it. Luz’s glyphs were presented as something she cared about and a part of her journey but none reflect her, her character growth and early season 2 shoots them in the head to say “We’re now just going to come up with whatever bullshit that looks cool or works for the plot we want” even though they did that with the plant and fire glyphs already. The invisibility glyph can turn only an inanimate object invisible despite being connected to breath but the object doesn’t need to breathe so how does that work? And how did no one else ever just disappear their shirt when they first slapped a glyph to their chest besides it being a kid’s show? EVERYTHING HAS TELEPORTATION MAGIC! EVEN ILLUSIONS DO! I’m not kidding! Gus summons his lunchbox from the fucking aether in order to give it to Hunter and he only can do illusions at a competent level from what we’ve seen. The teleportation glyph was made without a light glyph. You know, the closest in element to WIND. OR SPACE. Or literally any school of magic usually associated with teleportation, especially of the type presented. Palisman vs Stringbean because everything about Stringbean spits in the face of Hunting Palisman’s lessons. Spell circles mattering as some spells don’t need them like Darius’ transformation and size mattering is just a blatant lie, especially when connected to glyphs. The fact that Bump uses what looks like some sort of glyphs or magical writing in literally the third episode to put the school into lock down and this is never mentioned again. It could just be how it was visualized for the spell spreading but like... Why when everything is circles? The show doesn’t know if the Titan is a god or a regular creature, to the point where Belos, who has literally no reason to think the Titan is special and who’s religion is blatantly false, treats Luz having glyphs like a gift bestowed by a god through the Titan. Despite Titans also just having been a race and mocked by people who don’t live on the ‘corpse continent’. A bunch of magical beings, inherently having magic connected to their hearts, go to a place with zero magic and suffer zero complications or weaknesses from this. This includes a being who lost 99% of their body and is MADE OF MAGIC at this point. And those are just the ones that immediately come to mind. There’s almost certainly WAY MORE. And again, a lot of these points I could expand into whole blogs going into why its bad magic, bad writing, bad worldbuilding, etc. like that. Yaaaaaaaa-
