Is teeth a weird thing to notice in people?

Like I find that when I'm looking at someone, one of the first things I notice is whether or not I think they have really good teeth.

And I don't even mean 'really good' in the way of like yeah these are perfect teeth but more in the 'I find these visually interesting'

Like there is this one girl who does makeup on like tiktok/instagram (I just use instagram but I'm p sure she/other people just reupload her vids to insta) and like she has these teeth that are just like slightly longer than what is probably average (idk is average teeth length a thing people notice???) but I just really like them for some reason.

And like I don't quite get the hype for Pedro Pascal, though tbf I havent seen any of the media he's in, but like he also has like really nice teeth.

okay, so. the hannibal panel at c2e2.

this might be a hot take, but it was a rehash of basically every other interview they've ever done. regardless, i highly enjoyed attending the panel and getting to see a live interview between them with lovely fannibal friends. they have a great dynamic and it was heartwarming to watch in-person.

it's been 11 years since the show aired, so they probably stuck to the same/safe questions/answers bc hugh and mads didn't remember much of it. which is fair! but even they looked exhausted from the same repetitive questions and were itching to hear something new. mads did answer one of the q's which was like, "what was your favorite memory on set?" with "there's tons of them. the problem with favorite stories is that you can't remember them. but when you're in the midst of it, it's funny and crazy. but when you get the question, you can't remember." which is true.

and also tbf (i think) hugh said that he flew in and got drunk with mads. if i remember correctly, they joked about how hugh was late for his first fan op (bc the had such a good time drinking the night prior), but mads made it a point to say that he still showed up to his. 😂 mads also said he missed hugh and it was sweet. you could tell he was being genuine.

thus, you have 2 hungover older actors doing a panel about a show they did 11 years ago at an event that was hastily thrown together at the last minute. it's no surprise they played it safe. the fan q's were pretty lame tbh. some were what i consider inappropriate. but hugh/mads seemed to light up at the silly questions the most. (which ofc, they're there to have fun). the fans would cheer/clap/shout "i love you!" after everything they said, which you could tell was grating on them after a while. like there were definitely appropriate times for commotion, but it happened after EVERY SINGLE QUESTION/COMMENT. (it's impossible to focus in a setting like that) also the "hugh dancy loves fake blood" bit got old real quick and you could tell he was over it lol.

on top of that, bc it's a reunion, they probably went for the nostalgia angle vs trying to do something contemporary. it's the safest way to ensure the guests/fans have an easy, fun time. the moderator had the right energy and knew how to ask questions/transition the convo properly. just the questions themselves were not interesting or new. they also cut the panel like 10 mins early.

the only real "new" bits we got was hugh dancy's answer to the q "why did will graham wear glasses sometimes?" his original answer from back in the day was "because i thought it/will would look cool with blood on his glasses" but his updated response was sth like "because it helps shield him from the world"

re: the accusations abt bryan fuller i can’t say im surprised tbh. it tracks w the fact that he can’t seem to keep a show any longer than a couple seasons at most. previously id thought it was just him being a diva or creatively demanding but it’s disappointing to hear that it might be bc of something darker.

also like, idc what anyone on hannibal twt says, it’s kind of weird to retweet explicit fanart of your coworkers (and presumably friends?). i get that it’s the characters but hugh dancy has literally said recently that he’s not super comfortable w his face on the more raunchy stuff. that’s not to say it’s weird for a creator to embrace shippers but the way that fuller goes about it has always weirded me out frankly. plus there’s the time he outed someone in a speech iirc?

anyway idk im pretty willing to separate the art from the artist here. fuller wasn’t the only force behind hannibal—a lot of what makes the show compelling is hugh dancy and mads mikkelsens performances, brian reitzells score, janice poons food styling, and the camera work and even if we were to put that aside for a second I think that bad people can make good art sometimes 🤷🏽‍♀️

Something I’ve been noticing in reaction to this episode is a desire to almost…rewrite Olivia and Elliot as characters and as a pairing. Or soften them, or something? Specifically Elliot, of course. Comments about how he’s nothing like 1.0 Elliot, how he’s regressing, etc — when back in the day he probably would have done worse.

Listen, I want to see Elliot grow as much as anyone else…but his rage at injustice is a key component of his personality! It’s going to take time to reconstruct that! And a ticking time bomb episode with a personal loss isn’t when. But as you said, his backing down to Olivia is equally important. Isn’t that dichotomy why we find him compelling compared to, say, Hugh Dancy’s character who I don’t know the name of?

Shit I’m sorry for the long message, you just voiced my thoughts so well. I really don’t understand how you could care about EO as a pairing without acknowledging so much of their connection is in both being MESSY people.

They are both messy - they have both lied, and used violence to their own ends, and gone rogue, and made fucked up personal decisions - and I personally like that about them. I like that unpredictability, I like that riding the edge between "good" and "bad", I like the complexity, I like the mess. I think softening their rough edges - or pretending they don't have any - is as much as disservice to them as only seeing them as violent.

It matters that they are like this. It matters that there is such a rage in Olivia's belly that she's sometimes wondered if she inherited it from her father. It matters that Elliot beat a pedophile into a pulp in 1.0 for refusing to take down a picture of his daughter. It matters that they bring balance to one another, that they are both half feral but they also crucially restrain and guide one another. That they are the best version of themselves when they are together.

My tag for them is "toxic codependent assholes" bc they are and isn't that delicious??? Olivia can be mean and they can be dangerous together. Isn't that sexy?? Isn't that interesting???

There is a huge movement - always has been really - that seeks to tell us we should only support "good" people, that we must police our interests and be good virtuous little Catholics people who only engage with media that reflects the Right Values to which I say

We're allowed to like problematic things. It turns out everyone is problematic, actually, bc no human is perfect. That's ok. Fiction is a safe place to explore ideas and relationships that wouldn't be healthy in real life, and having an outlet for that can actually make us healthier in the long run!!!

There have been many many times since Elliot's return when I have been actually so impressed by how well they captured his character. By how much of 1.0 Elliot is still visible, despite the way he has changed - which he must change bc it's been a fucking decade. There have been so many times when they have captured his voice so well I have cheered, and so many times when I have screamed that's my girl bc Olivia too has felt more true to herself since his return.

They're angry. So what?? Anger is a valid emotion!! We're allowed to feel it!! Repressing it is bad actually. And using fictional characters an outlet to explore anger, to talk about anger, is good for us.

To hate Elliot's anger, and expect Olivia to be soft and kind all the time, is to ignore who they are and why they work.

yesterday i watched the last downton abbey movie w my dad bc its like our family bonding comfort show and when i saw hugh dancy in the opening credits i was excited and was waiting for him to appear and then by the time he did i completely forgot he was there and didnt even recognize him because both his hairstyle and his hairline just completely altered the way his face registered to my brain. and also his accent was so completely different from will's. meanwhile my dad who has only seen him in one show was like 'why do i feel like i saw him on a tv series at some point' while i was just totally failing to register that i was looking at hugh dancy until like an hour in when my brain just went 'wait wasnt hugh dancy in this movie wasnt i waiting for him to appear'

Last drink: classic water, big big fan of the stuff. reminds me of nbc hannibal because because there was water in the show a lot

Last show: watched two episodes of The Last of Us at like 5am yesterday, it was great. also perpetually rewatching hannibal by getting everyone I know to watch, and then watching with them

Last thing you ate: soft tofu in broth. there are, not a lot of vegan post-wisdom-tooth food options (also I’m very picky lmao), so I’ve been rotating between that, vegan ice cream, mashed potatoes, and vegetable smoothie for like 3 days. 

Favorite color: ohhh this is painful, is it a cop-out to say all of them? Big big fan of purple, orange with purple, green, and blue. 

Current obsession: it’s been hannibal and nothing else for 9 months now, and im going strong

Unrelated obsession: not sure if this counts exactly but there’s a writing app where you set a timer and start typing, and if you stop typing for longer than 5 seconds it deletes everything, and it’s so cool. I’ve been calling it stream-of-consciousness writing in my head for like a year bc it’s like a personal stream-of-consciousness even though ik that is not how to use that term alksfhd. I do 3 or 5 minute sprints and store them in one document, then have a second document where I edit and refine, and for a few I’ve put them side to side and colour-coded all my changes and it’s so fun

Any pets: two cats! Miles, my grey one, is extremely sweet, and possibly too smart for his own good. My other one Chico has a very adorable snaggle-tooth, and is incredibly stupid <3. he’s very bad at knowing what direction he’s going or recognizing any parts of the world around him and I love him very much.

Do you have a crush on anyone?: only in that vague abstract way, almost without direction, catching little wisps of the concept of the feeling from scattered bits of interactions with the world around me

Favorite fictional character: im absolutely refusing to choose between hannibal and will so im listening them both and you can’t stop me

The last place you traveled: i’ve literally gone nowhere since the pandemic started </3. i’m in Canada and the furthest I’ve been is just one city to another in the same province like 1.5 hours away. Hopefully going to Italy in the summer though!!

If The Marriage of Figaro wasn't an opera, but a movie, here's my fancasting:

Figaro - Hugh Dancy (I feel like he can portray the scheming and the comedy simultaneously. He's also as scrunkly as I picture Figaro.)

Susanna - Emma Stone (I might be biased bc I just really love Emma Stone, but I think she would play the sassiness and stress great.)

The Count - Johnny Depp (Younger though, like in his Willy Wonka era. He could play the Count to be comedic successfully and not just creepy, though he totally has the abilities to emulate creepy too.)

Countess Rosina - Emily Blunt (I think she could do the mourning and sadness of the Countess' love life along with her hope/longing awesomely.)

I think Hugh Dancy is wrong that Will never associated love with Hannibal, or that he didn't recognise his dark destructive love as love. Will dreams of Hannibal calling him beloved, in Mizumono Hannibal calls him beloved person by saying he has an imago of him, he knew Hannibal was heartbroken, his whole prison gambit was predicated on Hannibal loving him enough to give up his freedom for him. Besides, he recognised that GJH's destructive, terrible love for Abigail was love and was even defensive to Jack about it. So why do you think it took so long for Will to recognise Hannibal was in love with him? Or was he lying to himself?

i think that lying to himself was def a big part of it. will lies to himself a lot so he doesn’t have to accept things. he lies to himself about abigail’s involvement in gjh’s crimes and he’s lies to himself about hannibal fitting the ripper profile. and when it came to hannibal being capable of love, i think will put hannibal’s “love” in its own corner. he’s seen all kinds of fucked up expressions of “love,” including gjh. he separates the way hannibal loves from the way normal people do because it’s too much to cope with the idea that someone who does such horrible things can also be terribly human. and if accepts that hannibal can love like normal people, then he must also accept that there is not that much difference between himself and hannibal. he must accept that he might feel the same way bc, you know, even if we as fans are screaming the whole time that hannibal feels romantic love for will, that wasn’t always apparent to will either or he didn’t want to accept it. realizing you, as person who (according to the text) is straight, has feelings for another man at the age of 40 is not easy. realizing it and knowing that man is a serial killer who has maimed and almost killed you is even harder. (let’s not forget that even as there was evidence that hannibal loves will, there was also a ton of evidence that hannibal could’ve just as easily discarded him like a broken toy right up to digestivo). when he asks bedelia if hannibal is in love with him, he’s not only accepting that hannibal is capable of it but that hannibal loves him in more than a platonic way or his own abusive way. bedelia puts herself next to will as a “bride” of hannibal, and he finally allows it all to click in his mind. by the look on his face, we know that he realizes he feels the same way about hannibal. lying to himself and refusing to accept hannibal being capable of love was as much about hannibal as it was about himself. he didn’t want to accept that he could love someone like that. but hannibal does, and he does, and really, that’s what drives will to do what he does.
