Hi! I was wondering if you’ve ever heard of ‘nutrition response testing’ (also called ‘applied kinesiology’ and ‘contact reflex analysis’)? I had it done a few days ago by a holistic health care practice and they recommended several (expensive) supplements for various health issues. I didn’t know that was what was going to happen going in, my mom got a recommendation for their practice and convinced me to try it. I was originally going to go along with it, since they really sounded like they knew what they were talking about, and made me feel very heard and respected, but now I’m not so sure. They made a pretty big oversight regarding me being allergic to one of the recommended supplements, which lead to me doing a ton of research on everything they were doing. It was pretty inconclusive. Some sites said it’s complete pseudoscience and doesn’t work at all, but I’ve also seen a lot of people claim it helped them with decades long health issues. I just really don’t know what to make of this, or where to go to figure it out, so I figured I’d ask you.
I also know several people who found relief from symptoms from seeing kinesiologists.
I respect their experiences and am glad they found help, but as someone who worked the holistic circuit for many years and still uses some holistic treatments in my own health journey, I am going to urge an abundance of caution going forward.
In holistic circles, there's a tendency to throw supplements at you to see what sticks. If you feel better, great! You possibly had a deficiency you were either unaware of or were just on the cusp of borderline so it wasn't flagged up in regular testing.
If you don't, there's a tendency to tell you to keep taking them because "these things take time," and also have you tried {x other product they also just so happen to sell in their clinic.}
And people do it, usually because the supplements cost less than going to see the actual doctor, or their doctor doesn't make them feel heard and this nice person is offering them a solution while sounding very confident about it.
One of the major draws of holistic medicine for a lot of people is that it lets sick people feel heard. We take time with people to make them feel valid and cared for because that is also an important part of the healing process. But again, speaking as someone with multiple holistic qualifications and who still uses some of them, holistic care is not a substitute for conventional medicine. It can be a good addition, but it should not be your only method of treatment.
Now, not all of these items are useless and not all people who sell supplements and other such things in their clinic are suspicious.
It's just that there's very little regulation on who can sell these kind of things (as well as very little regulation of the supplements themselves), and you need to be careful about who you trust and be aware of how they are being promoted to you.
(One way to do this is look up the brand of supplements being sold and seeing who their parent company is. Chiropractors, for instance, are notorious for buying supplements from companies that operate like MLMs, giving them incentive to shill them to all their patients whether they need them or not.)
It's true, some holistic types are very good at spotting deficiencies in how the body looks and responds to certain things. Especially if they have legitimate medical training to back up their practice. But that is also true of any conventional doctor who pays attention.
I walked in to see my PCP not too long ago and he was able to diagnose a zinc deficiency due to the symptoms I was describing and a subtle change he noticed in my nails.
Hell, my dentist was the one who figured out my mouth ulcers and the muscle tic in my jaw might be a b12 deficiency and urged me to see the doctor who ultimately saved my life.
In those instances, supplementation was necessary because I have chronic underlying conditions that prevent me from absorbing nutrients from my food.
Unlike any kinesiologist I've known, however, both instances were followed up with diagnostic blood work to check the accuracy of those suspected deficiencies, both to ensure it was correct but also ensure appropriate supplemental dosing.
I can't tell you the number of times someone has suggested I take "shit-yourself" levels of magnesium because someone who also shills essential oils on the side told them to. No thank you.
You didn't mention if the person you saw wanted to do diagnostic blood testing before offering you supplements, but if they didn't, that's a red flag for me. The fact that they missed an allergy you presumably told them about is another (just as it would be for a regular doctor).
So, should you listen to them? That's up to you. I personally prefer to see doctors who take a more holistic approach to the body, but I also know enough to combine it with conventional medicine and when testing is needed. I have that experience and know-how. Not everyone does, and it can be very easy to trust the nice person telling you to Buy Their Shiny Tonic To Cure Thine Ailments.
Maybe it'll help, maybe it won't. But it sounds like your gut is giving you a warning sign. I'd be inclined not to ignore it.

I do think at some point in the not too distant future, the 911 fandom, at least on Tumblr, is going to have to reckon with the fact that despite M!slash being the main driving force of the fandom, gay men like myself are in the vast minority (I think a recent poll put us at something like 6% but it didn’t separate bisexuals by gender so it’s hard to say how many mlm are actually in the fandom) and in the same way being a gay man doesn’t exempt him from being incidentally or purposefully misogynistic, being some other flavor of the rainbow doesn’t prevent someone from perpetuating homophobia against men who love men.
At some point the jokes about how Tommy is just here for dick or should just get dick and move on (when he’s already made it very clear that he wants a relationship with Buck) are going to start to sound like hypersexual stereotypes of gay men. At some point the constant push to get them to break up as soon as possible and for Tommy to die or get shipped off to Arizona or wherever is going to seem less like regular ship hate and more like wanting a gay male character to be punished for daring to seek a relationship with a man in the first place. We obviously aren’t there yet but I do think we should be aware that it is fast approaching.

if kim only cares about people's worth if they're in the RCM then why in the fuck was he about to give his jacket to some random ass kid
Tumblr media
yeah sure the guy who only cares about other RCM officers if they're good was about to part with the only item of clothing keeping him somewhat warm in a place where there's ice thick enough to support two grown men and a bunch of other shit absolutely
(edit: i'd appreciate it if you take a look at this version instead x it contains way more nuance and some amazing additions)
(edit 2: here's a version with IDs as well x )

i understand why there are so many people complaining about fitpac wedding but also guys. think of the comedy potential for a fitpac wedding. them having to make their minecraft characters kiss. ccfit has his head in his hands and won’t stop fumbling his words. ccpac is shrinking down in his chair and you can only see like three hairs on his head at this point. fit makes ramon his best man. richas is the flower boy. fit and pac both get so flustered when they’re calling each other their husbands for the first time. fit would probably do the jumping jacks emote at the altar. pac would probs do the fall to pieces emote like a thousand times. they would be just as silly and awkward as they always have been. the comedy potential guys think about it

Me: I don't like when shows queerbait me.
Other Fans: Well then just watch other shows, dummy!!!!
Me: 👍👍👍 wow what a tidy way to dismiss and invalidate a legitimate reaction to homophobic story tropes! 👍👍👍
The "just leave then" response to people wanting more inclusivity from the stories they love is not just emotionally invalidating - it is also one of the things that keeps storytellers from feeling that they need to improve in the future by making fans feel stupid for demanding better representation in the first place.
This kind of response doesn't just make you sound like a conservative (since this is a VERY popular response that conservatives have when confronted with leftist media criticism), it also fundamentally ignores the fact that there may not BE an equivalent story with good rep to go to after leaving the queerbait-y one behind.
Delicious in Dungeon is special and unique; that's why I genuinely love it. It is that love that makes me want it to do better.
When I see that Shuro is allowed to openly express romantic love for Falin, but Marcille/Falin is relegated to mere implication, it makes me really sad. It may not be a romance manga, but there ARE straight couples, and hetero desire IS on display - which makes the lack of open queerness all the more noticeable.
So when people say "just go watch something else" in response to my genuine sadness and irritation that a beloved story is excluding people like me..... Are you telling me there's a nearly identical queer show - with a similarly active fandom - all about found family learning to cook beautiful foods in a dungeon? Is my favorite-guy-ever Senshi going to be there? Is there actually a place for me to go to??
OR is there only one Delicious in Dungeon, and that's what makes it great?
I think actually folks who respond this way just want me to leave, and they don't really care where I go, so long as their favorite thing doesn't have to stand up to criticism.
Because I don't want lesbian media elsewhere. I want it here, with my friend Marcille. Here, where the seeds of queer romance were purposely planted to hook my attention. What's so wrong with being disappointed if those seeds never grow to bear fruit??
We can like good art and still demand it does better. And we can validate people who are sad it isn't doing better without getting defensive. Critical analysis is healthy and important. It's how good and bad stories are fully understood, and it's how better stories get made.
And while I will try to enjoy the plentiful delicious crumbs I am being served (since it is more than most shows give me), just because I CAN squish a bunch of crumbs together into the approximate shape of a muffin, that doesn't mean I've been served a meal.
More on this topic because I love a good analogy
My original post about queerbaiting in Dungeon Meshi (that inspired this one with the replies I got from it)

whoever thought it's a great fucking idea to sit tf down and count hypothetical money quackity would make from streaming FREQUENTLY, laying it out with passive agressive comments on how this could save qsmp from the financial downfall - literally NOBODY FUCKING ASKED, GET A DAMN LIFE. i am once again aggressively tapping the sign saying no way fandom can get into every business thinking it is their sole right to fix things, presenting their opinion as the only correct one, moreover, trying to talk as if they are the expert on the subjet, MOREOVER, trying to speak like his damn BOSS. (spoiler: you are NOT). it's pure manager anti behaviour. whatever happenned wtih treating ccs like humans they are, amirite !!! i understand being disappointed and angry with him over how things turned out, but at this point some fuckers will not be satisfied with anything Q does, it's never going to be enough. (fuck these people sincerely, as well as their irrelevant ass takes). (in general, Q was never a long stream guy, at the beginning of the year he did mention he wants to stream more, doing things he likes, but then shit hit the fan, so. literally one of the recent streams he did, the one where he painted, he did because he felt sad and wanted to do smth nice. he is literally not your type of streamer who'd grind for money and subs, idk what to tell ya)

Listen, I know I'm the weird one for thinking about it in such a methodical way, but I think that if you're going to criticize someone, you should at least be aware of why, specifically, you're doing it. Are you trying to help that person see something in another light? Are you trying to inform others about a prevalent issue or mindset? Are you really upset with them, or is there a larger issue at play? How will criticizing this person change them, others, and/or yourself?
Like, I understand that's a kind of a robotic way of thinking, but taking a moment to think before I interact with anyone, especially strangers, has saved my bacon more than once. And, like, if you're just doing it to be mean, why are you even doing it? You obviously can, but why not use that time being happy

this is going on anon thru someone else bc every time i post about this i get goofball ass comments im honestly just not feeling like dealing with
but the tme/tma dichotomy doesn’t really make sense to me. like, every trans person can be a victim of transmisogyny regardless of gender. that’s just cis/trans 2
also like. idk why people complain abt transandrophobia or whatevs we’ve decided we’re calling it. if transmisogyny is hatred of transfemininity how would transandrophobia not be hatred of transmasculinity?
maybe i have it a lil backward but like. im a butch trans woman and im pretty comfortable with that. not on hormones (would like to be) and i don’t pass or really want to and i don’t care abt dressing feminine. when transmeds do the bit where they say im not really trans because of that, they’re challenging my ability to remain masculine while being transfem. is that not transandrophobia???
im confused and im scared to ask bc everyone i ever see talking about it is kind of an asshole abt it
yeah, this idea that oppression is somehow only aimed at the True, Intended Victims is... very nonsensical.
ive had transmisogyny aimed at me since before publicly ID'ing as trans because i dared to be visibly genderweird and that made me Close Enough to a freak-in-the-transfemme-way for some people. ive seen transfemme people have transandrophobia aimed at them because they dared to be masc in a way that clashes with "fem" characteristics, and that made them Close Enough to freaks-in-the-transmasc-way for some people. it's so unnecessary and counterproductive to pretend these experiences somehow are not real, or it's actually Another kind of oppression (a more "general" one, perhaps), and not the one it clearly is.
im sorry people are assholes, because i fully agree with you here.

i think what holds me back from interacting more with whatever attempts at schizoid "communities" exist in different pockets of the internet is that, frankly, y'all are so so so whiny. so fucking whiny. everything is negative, everything is meaningless, look how much it sucks for me, look how pointless it all is, look at me being apathetic and finding no enjoyment in anything, i dont even try, misanthropy etc etc.
i get it, szpd sure sucks sometimes, you wish you weren't constructed like this. and i get that a large part of it is the fact that people in general tend to focus on and remember negative things, but good lord. did you know szpd is the only personality disorder that doesn't require clinical distress? you can live your own solitary life, doing your own thing, making your own habits, creating your own meaning, connecting in the ways you feel comfortable and isolating yourself to the extent you need, and be absolutely fine with it. happy even, dare i say vibing. getting there takes work from you, requires you to take a good hard look at yourself from time to time, but nothing in this disorder implies that healthy coping is some fucking pie in the sky or whatever. you can be fine.
it sounds harsh, but someone has to say it: presuming you're mature enough to do so, you need to accept the cards you've been given and make the most of it to the best of your ability. learn what your limits are, try to expand them if possible, bear the burden of your own personal growth. that is your responsibility. yours.

All I'm saying is that Azriel's shadows first manifested when he needed companionship because he had none, he was severely traumatized and in emotional and physical distress, and he needed someone, something, anything to reach out and offer him comfort and help him feel safe, so it's not that far of a reach to say that when the shadows do vanish (not run away or hide, simply vanish), it's because he feels safe enough to be without them

it's interesting that the only pro-tsats posts i'm seeing are people defending Nico and Will's right to be cringe. Which, yes, they're two fucked up 15 year olds who are dating someone for the first time! They're allowed to be Fucked Up and Weird About It!
The thing is - I haven't seen a single negative TSATS post that mentions that specifically. All the negative posts I've seen are about how OOC Nico is, how his actions/speech don't align with what we've seen in previous books, and how a lot of the behavior from both Nico AND Will is WILDLY out of left field or in some other way unexpected.
I've also seen a lot of people who aren't disappointed that they act like teenagers, but are disappointed that even in a book meant to be exploring trauma and healing, it seems like so much of the trauma was in some way glossed over or handled poorly. Like Nico coming out to the entire camp goes ENTIRELY against everything we've seen and heard from him in HoO. Nico getting to see his mom and sister again completely rewrites all the deep, meaningful healing that he did in the previous series. People are upset that a lot of Will's trauma specifically was glossed over, and that as the story went on he seemed to fade more and more into a husk of a character rather than an actual developed person himself.
I've also seen a lot of posts commenting on the whole "Nico's internal demons which are personified and given Actual Life are described as being the offspring of this LITERAL CHILD and a primordial being" situation. which is a WEIRD situation. like why the fuck would rick and mark decide to go with that? of all the options?
so, anyway, TLDR: it's interesting to me that the people who are "defending" TSATS are defending parts that nobody actually seems to have a problem with, and are ignoring the parts that are Off.
