#animalistic dehumanisation

Note
Hi, sorry to bother!
I’ve had this idea lately but I wondered if you would like to write it, feel free to ignore it if it doesn’t convince you btw
Pet hero whumpee but not the docile type of pet, more like superhero/supervillain has conditioned/deshumanized them to be like some sort of rabid, aggresive pet that attacks anyone who isn’t their “owner”
Maybe they’ve been missing for some time already and when villain (or any other character you want to) finds them, they worry about the fact that hero is attacking them and doesn’t seem to recognize them at all
I hope you’re having a nice day✨✨✨
Master
Warning: dehumanisation, conditioning, pet whump and everything that comes with it, mentions of physical and psychological abuse, grafic injuries, suffocation, blood, gore, murder. I have no idea how I wrote this. Please do not interact if any of those might be triggering for you.
The door opens with a taunting creak, the sound reverberates off the empty walls. Villain takes a tentative step in, glancing around for any traps. The apartment looks perfect in its apparent abandonment - not a thing out of place, no sign of a fight or kidnapping. Hero had been gone for a little over three months. Just like that, no traces left behind, no warnings - nothing. It's like they vanished into thin air. Evaporated. Villain didn't know why or where they went. They had no idea who to contact or what to do about Hero's sudden disappearance. The only thing Villain did know was they missed their nemesis.
Oh, they missed Hero like crazy.
They still recalled the brawl they had the day before. Villain was attempting to cause a riot in the city stadium for the fun of it; Hero had been their ordinary cheeky self as well. Nothing new to the usual scheme of things. They took turns delivering the blows and tumbled around a bit; Villain ended up restrained against a wall and accepted temporary defeat despite being capable of obliterating the entire stadium - Hero included - with a flick of their wrist. Both were accustomed to the game plan and felt no need to deviate. The next day, Villain seized a bank and demanded Hero's presence - per standard procedure.
Except, Hero never came.
They robbed the bank despite not needing the money and departed in a sour mood because nothing was supposed to be of more importance than their battles. Villain expected Hero to return the next day and intended to make them apologise relentlessly for such disrespect.
Needless to say, that wish never came true.
After a week of waiting in vain, Villain started suspecting something was off. They spent the following weeks in search of any clues to decipher Hero's mysterious disappearance, any clues that could lead them to Hero's whereabouts - to no avail.
That is, until today. Villain pulls the letter out of the envelope and unfolds it. An invitation to Superhero's estate. Villain hums, scrunching their nose. That's the last place they want to go to, but at this point, they'll resort to anything to find Hero.
Little did they know that finding Hero would be the least of their concerns.
Villain exits the apartment, making their way outside the city right away. A deep-set sense of anxiety pushes them forward, a feeling of urgency and despair. They can't comprehend what it is yet, the idea building in their subconscious mind, but they can tell it's bad. They can tell it's entirely vile.
Villain doesn't bother announcing their arrival, instead sneaking over the high fences and past the numerous guards. They walk into the manor, darting past the hounds that roam the first floor, and climb to the second floor, where Superhero's study is. Their hands shake with dreadful anticipation.
Villain pushes the door open, and in the same instant, something lunges at them. Their first guess is that it's another dog, but the assumption soon proves untrue. The creature withdraws at the sound of a whistle, skipping back to the leg of its master.
"Good boy," Superhero smiles, brushing Hero's hair the wrong way. Villain watches in shock as Hero turns their head to the side, leaning into the touch and licking Superhero's palm like a dog.
"What the-" Villain breathes out, too stunned to form a coherent thought. They stare with widening eyes at whatever is left of their Hero as they rub their head against their owner's leg, looking for praise. But when their gaze lands on Villain, Hero's expression shifts to pure rage. They snarl, aggressive and aggravated. Villain's voice is barely audible behind their growls. "What have you done?"
"Me? Nothing much," Superhero grins, hooking their fingers into Hero's collar and pulling at it harshly until Hero starts to choke. "I've taught them what they really are. What they deserve to be."
"But why?" Villain glances at them, seeing insanity in Superhero's eyes. They look back at Hero's dehumanised form on all fours. Their back is arched in what Villain assumes is a defensive stance. Their mind is reeling, running a hundred miles an hour. They cannot grasp the situation in full yet, refusing to believe that the creature in front of them is indeed Hero. Their Hero. "W-why?"
"Why, you ask?" Superhero drawls, fisting Hero's hair and tugging with brute force. Hero falls onto their back, letting out a whimpering whine. Villain turns away, unable to take the sight of them in such a state. "You think I haven't noticed the little play you two have devised? Your little game of back and forth?"
"What are you..." Villain starts, getting up from the floor. Hero jumps up, preparing to attack. Superhero zaps them with a shocker, sending their body back down with another loud whimper. "Stop! Please... For the love of God, stop!" Villain yells, their lips and hands trembling in desperation.
"Hero failed. Their purpose was to defeat you. They could have done it months ago," Superhero explains, using their foot to prompt Hero's chin up. "They chose not to. They betrayed their pack, so they needed to learn how to be a good dog."
Villain shudders at the impassive tone of their voice. "You've conditioned them into submission. You've turned them into an animal, you monster!" They spit out, their eyes flaring up with newfound rage. Their fingers curl into fists as they look around the room, trying to find a solution. An escape.
"No, I've made him my pet. I'm a patient master," Superhero caresses Hero's cheek and rubs their ear, their touch looking almost soothing until their fingers squeeze, digging into the skin on Hero's chin. "Now, attack."
Hero switches into a fight mode with a snarl, their teeth glimmering white in the dim-lit room. Villain dodges the attack by jumping to the side and reaching out to take hold of Hero's head, prompting them to meet their gaze.
"Hero, it's me!" Hero's pupils are dilated and empty. They seem incomprehensive. "Please, Hero, it's me, me..." Villain pleads, tears brimming their eyes. For a short moment, something seems to flicker behind Hero's gaze. But, Superhero blows their whistle, and Hero loses all sense of self again, attacking Villain with renewed vigour.
"No, no, no," Villain tries their best to hold Hero back without hurting them. Their voice is thick with emotion when they speak again, struggling to contain Hero.
"Look at me! Please, just look at me..." Their expression is nothing short of begging, but Hero remains unaffected. With no other choice left, Villain grasps Hero's collar, hooking their belt through it and securing it.
Hero is rabid against their leash, thrashing on the ground as Villain stands, facing Superhero.
"No matter how far you take them, they'll always be my pet," Superhero hisses, crossing their arms over their chest with an unmistakable sense of victory. They are so confident in their conviction that they don't bother to arm themself.
"You still don't get it, do you?" Villain lets out a dark chuckle, but there's no humour behind it. "It's not them that betrayed the pack by refusing to defeat me. They could never defeat me in the first place. It was me. I'm the variable you didn't take into account," Villain growls through gritted teeth, taking a step towards Superhero and wrapping a hand around their forearm. "And I will burn you to ashes."
Before Superhero can register it, their skin starts melting off their body, the tangy smell of burnt flesh filling the room. In mere seconds, Superhero's body hits the floor, their moaning sounding like music to Villain's ears as fire washes over them. Hero howls, tagging at their impromptu leash, but Villain remains unyielding. They kneel next to them, ripping the whistle off Superhero's neck, then wrap the belt around their knuckles, forcing Hero to their feet. Villain cups their cheeks, their fingers tender on Hero's clammy skin, and looks into their eyes in hopes of finding recognition - all they see instead is fear.
Primal, animalistic fear.
They gulp down the lump in their throat and blow the whistle, watching Hero's eyes light up in recognition of their new master.
Villain knows it's going to be one hell of a journey to get their Hero back. They know it will take weeks, if not months, of constant grind to heal what was so thoroughly broken and even then, Hero might never return to their former cheerful self. But they also know there is no one more worth fighting for.
Villain misses Hero like crazy. And they will have them back.

A/N: Hello, darling! Oh, it's not a bother in the slightest! I'm glad to have you here. I have to admit, for the longest time, I had no idea if I would be able to finish this story. It felt very raw, very painful and hit a little too deep. But at the same time, I felt the need to explore the theme, both as a writer and as a psychologist. So, thank you for this request. I hope it turned out how you imagined it. Love, xo Sunny

The Daroga is actually an extremely important character to the themes of Phantom of the Opera
Many people might not know this but living as a Muslim/brown person in the west ( especially France… see: burqab ban, burkini ban, hijab ban, etc) is extremely difficult for some. Not to mention in a world post 9/11. Not to mention ( probably) in the 1890’s like in Phantom of the Opera where orientalist art and inaccurate and often dehumanising portrayals of the Middle East and it’s people ( muslims, arabs, Persians etc) were common and were used to justify colonialism.
In classic literature there’s only like, ONE character who is brown and is treated like an actual human being by the narrative and is presented as a central cast member to boot: and that’s the Daroga/ The Persian in Phantom of the Opera. And even then, every adaptation after either replaces him with a white person or has an incredibly disingenuous and inaccurate portrayal of him and his ethnicity/religion. Heck, in the Phantom Susan Kay book he’s given the surname “Khan” which isn’t even Persian it’s a PAKISTANI name.
Every other presumably brown/POC character are written animalistically and antagonistically. E.g Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights and Bertha from Jane Eyre. Bertha especially who is just used as an obstical/metaphor instead of an actual genuine character who deserves her own nuance and voice.
Now, back to the tittle, why do I think The Persian’s mere existence and especially with him being Persian/Muslim is inexplicably tied to the themes of POTO? Because he’s just like Erik and completely unlike Erik at the same time. In the book he’s constantly described as wearing as astrakhan cap/ a fez. Something quintessentially Middle Eastern and exposes him as ethnic right away to the eyes of the then European public. Both Erik and The Persian have sides of them that the society they live in at large shuns/dehumanises/condemns. For Erik it’s his face, and for The Persian it’s his culture/ religion/ race. But unlike Erik, The Persian has the choice to “ take it off” or assimilate more into society. He can, and it was better for him if he wore, a top hat but he CHOOSES to wear a fez. And he never takes it off. While he CAN and he has the chance to be more accepted in society than he already is.
But Erik can’t “take it off”, he can’t take off his face.
Though we don’t know much about the Persians’ beliefs, it’s safe to assume he was probably Muslim since Persia has been a Muslim country for a long time ( ignore the one we have now lmao). And I like to think that even in France he doesn’t give up this one part of him. He could just convert to whatever the majority religion in France was at the time and he would be more assimilated into French society, but he doesn’t . He actively chooses to keep parts of who he is even though they put him at a disadvantage. In contrast, Erik would give anything and does try everything ( even to phycotic lengths ) to be considered “ Normal” in society.
And throughout all of Erik’s efforts the only one who was ever really there for him was The Persian. But Erik dismisses him constantly.
I like to think that The Persian stayed because he understands Erik to a certain degree, and I like to think that Erik resents him because he doesn’t use every chance he gets to assimilate into society. To be considered normal. Sometimes Erik quite literally would kill for. Instead hanging onto every part that makes him who he is even when it only isolates him further.

I don't like how Black women with social media brainrot talk about misogynoir because they always end up acting like Black women's bodies are made wrong instead of racism and misogyny working together to dehumanise Black women. They end up implying that Blackness is all those things even though Africans are more genetically diverse than every other racial group in the world combined and this diversity isn't including the descendants of transatlantic slavery. We're not a monolith
They always end up blaming our bodies like we're badly made things pretending to be human beings. Some of you want your Blackness to be non-human so bad instead of learning to see yourself and Black people are normal humans. Self love is genuinely painful for some of you.
Our enslaved foremothers were treated that way because slavers wanted to treat them like that. It doesn't matter what physical attribute Black people did or didn't have, it needed to be animalised to pretend they weren't raping and beating human beings. We could have been on average 4'2ft and 50lb and they would have found a way to make that animalistic and threatening.
It's like everyone thinks racism had an objective point about how we look. Many of you are being ahistorical about what " they didn't see us as women" meant. This line isn't a comment about gender in the modern sense ( sorry you need to read more ) but the fact they saw us like pigs, cows and sheep. We don't call farm animals women or men because they aren't people. Stop being stupid. They called adult Black men boys for the same reason but are we going to start normalising language and ideas that Black men inherently outside adulthood? No! That's racist but everyday you people do this like you said something about Black women. Find self esteem

Racism in the ace community is seen as a joke from the outside and a confusing concept in the inside but it's pretty bait tbh:
Barbie, Wednesday and Elsa are ace-coded but not canon aces but they're widely accepted as ace icons in the community. Lacking genitalia, disliking romance and being single are not inherently asexual yet the community happily claims them as ace solely on those reasons. But Selah Summers? Nah she actually didn't say the words "aroace" even though the director confirmed it so she didn't really count. Abbi Singh? Nah she had a girlfriend and her superpower is being a succubus and it's not like the Imperfects actually addressed the themes of an asexual lesbian South Asian woman and her sexuality or anything. Fei Hargreeves? Well yeah the actress and producer confirmed it but she never said it on screen. Ace characters of colour always get held "screened" for approval to be "real rep" in a way white aces aren't its so weird (this also happens to gay aces but that's another post)
Almost anything involving Yasmin Benoit. The reason she's unacceptable ace rep is because of misogynoir. She's spoken so many times about never dating and not having sex (which mind you is none of our business and she shouldn't need to explain herself in the 1st place) and yet she's "too sexual" to represent the community. Again with the nitpicking, popular white ace accounts were so quick to dogpile her for not-so-good takes but when she speaks about racism? Crickets. When she spoke about sexual harassment? Crickets and not only that but they defended her harasser. The main ace activists that defended her were other Black aspecs.
Not understanding how desexualisation affects POC. Specifically, Black women are excluded from representations of love and sex because we're seen as undesirable. It's common for TV/Film to pair up everyone but the Black girl, or have a rebound Black partner for the non-Black main character who's disposed of when they're ready for their "real" non-Black partner again. This isn't done for Black aspecs benefit. It's a form of dehumanisation. Friendship especially in m/f is needed but exclusively pushing for friendship between Black women and non-Black men when there is romance coded or confirmed and shaming Black women in fandom or in show for shipping the Black female character is not doing what you think its doing.
Not understanding how sexualisation effects POC. Again linking to Yasmin, POC, especially Black people have been sexualised due to white supremacy. The "allosexual privilege" framework fails to acknowledge this because Black people's sexual attraction and sex is seen as aggressive and animalistic. Black people aren't "allowed" to be ace because of this sexualisation and why Yasmin regardless of what she wears or does is seen is too promiscuous.
Not acknowledging ace POC as ace rep. Again, where was the acknowledgement of Selah and the Spades as groundbreaking rep? The first aroace darkskin Black girl as a lead in any film? Sherronda J Brown spoke about Big Mouth's Black ace character and someone said it didn't count just bc they dislike the show. Again with Abbi and Fei the community didn't make noise for them like they did Todd from Bojack Horseman or Florence from Sex Ed (mind you the gap between how they did Florence vs O is jarring in itself) Isaac from Heartstopper was inspirational for many aspecs and I wont take that away but the way he's instantly credited for ace representation when he has so little screentime compared to the others is wild.
Just tired tbh. "Listen to POC aces!" "POC aces are valid!" Prove it then...?

Goddd imagine reading Les Mis for the first time and getting to Javert Derailed! The last few scenes in the chapter is so poignant it feels like I'm watching it right in front of my eyes. Especially this final paragraph:
Javert remained motionless for several minutes, gazing at this opening of shadow; he considered the invisible with a fixity that resembled attention. The water roared. All at once he took off his hat and placed it on the edge of the quay. A moment later, a tall black figure, which a belated passer-by in the distance might have taken for a phantom, appeared erect upon the parapet of the quay, bent over towards the Seine, then drew itself up again, and fell straight down into the shadows; a dull splash followed; and the shadow alone was in the secret of the convulsions of that obscure form which had disappeared beneath the water.
Javert becomes nothing more than a "tall black figure [...] taken for a phantom" moments before his death; he's already gone before he even falls into the Seine. And this is, of course, contrasted against Éponine's death (4.14.6), who went from:
It was crawling along the pavement. It was this that had spoken to him.
to
All at once, at the very moment when Marius fancied her asleep forever, she slowly opened her eyes in which appeared the sombre profundity of death, and said to him in a tone whose sweetness seemed already to proceed from another world:— “And by the way, Monsieur Marius, I believe that I was a little bit in love with you.” She tried to smile once more and expired.
Éponine, who has been dehumanised and reduced to animalistic and ghostly qualities for most of her story, becomes human once more in the final moments before her death. Javert, who was similarly described with animalistic qualities, sinks even further and does not even register as a person anymore before he dies.
o7 to Inspector Javert! What a fascinating insight to his first and last moment of introspection in the novel.

Omega SHI MEI AS A YANDERE imagine alpha reader reject him but is in love with omega Chu wanning
okay now listen here wifey imagine omega yandere Shi Mei caught alpha reader and Chu Wanning making out
I first thought that 'wifey' is about shi mei and the first thought was 'cheating on spouse yandere omega shi mei? the simplest idea, it's always a bad ending and a one-way ticket either to the cemetery or to full mind control/basement in modern au', but then I realized that, apparently,,,, is this for me?,,,,, 👉👈 /hj /affectionate
winners are not judged
♡ unhealthy behaviour, animalistic behaviour, secret relationship if you squint, forced relationship implied, age gap implied, mention of heat drugs [consensual, shi mei], sexism & dehumanisation if you squint (butterfly-boned beauty feast omegas)
♡ dubious consent / non consent elements (?) [at the very end; there is no indication of sex, but there are words about being forced to mark and heat], heavy petting if you squint, sex during mating season ('heat) if you squint
Tumblr media
In fact, all of these four — Shi Mei, Mo Ran, Xue Meng, Chu Wanning — do not cope very well with jealousy and possessive outbursts, even if their causes are different.
And SHI MEI, although he has one of the most emotionally flexible and hardy reactions out of the whole four, is no better — perhaps his past, his intense obsessiveness and almost dependence on you, mixed with his desire to be your omega and seeing you as his ideal, is under very strong pressure when it turns out that you are nothing of this, you do not feel for him, not even considering him as an 'omega with whom you could have puppies'.
He doesn't have to see you kissing; after all, Chu Wanning rarely ever allows himself to be intimate with you outside of closed places where you are definitely alone — but when you come back one day and smell too strong, with slightly swollen and brighter lips due to long kisses, and SHI MEI notices how you hurriedly bring put yourself in order and try not to look like Mo Ran looks like after brothels — for some reason this comparison seems to him the most correct, especially with burning jealousy and disgust at the fact that you preferred not him, — then he understands everything anyway.
And SHI MEI is quite proud and even somewhat overbearing, using his charm as an omega and as a butterfly-boned beauty feast to attract and hold you — but he is not too proud to use his body and unique body structure, especially for alphas who are intoxicated by his smell, but very easily loses control when he sees that his control over you lost and you slip out of his hands like a fish in the water.
Even if he is not a cat, nothing prevents him from immediately grabbing you with his claws.
... He doesn't do that, of course.
He has two goals — and since one of them is already kick the bucket, then why doesn't he kill two birds with one stone? Undoubtedly, the option of 'leaving a flower in you' (which he did not do earlier, otherwise you would have been attached to him — and he cannot help but reproach himself for this, although he previously hoped that your relationship would be mutual and amicable) is no longer available — he longs for you, but he is not an idiot, he knows that Chu Wanning will realize that something is wrong when you abruptly start to get colder and lose interest in him, which is clearly very intense between you judging by the strength of his scent on you, but that doesn't mean that you are the only option.
There is also Mo Ran. A strong, domineering alpha; maybe a little too problematic, but still capable of a lot. SHI MEI does not deny that he manipulates and uses — as if he has a choice — when, with the help of cunning and meanness, he leaves a flower in him, just as he should have done with you, but you are too infatuated with Chu Wanning to notice that something is wrong, clearly experiencing the flowering of your feelings for more the older omega (why?), but SHI MEI just smiles sweetly and nods, making it clear that he is happy for you, slyly flashing his eyes, and you are almost ashamed of how obvious it all probably looks — although you are sure that 'obvious' It's just for him, — but you can't help but bring him small things from time to time, even if Mo Ran looks belligerent.
(Shi Mei carefully keeps these things in his nest and looks at them for hours, thinking that he will do the same when you become his alpha.)
And counting on someone to disturb you is even more pointless.
There's not much you can do when his plan goes very smoothly, even if no one really knows who's pulling the strings.
SHI MEI has no regrets — if you don't want to look at him voluntarily, he will make you not look away from him, no matter what you have to sacrifice.
You chose it yourself.
And when a strong, very sweet and alluring smell that can cover the mind of anyone spreads through a small house, SHI MEI also knows what he is doing, squinting with pleasure, gently sliding along your legs to your hips, looking down at your figure.
Few alpha can resist omega in heat — and no alpha can resist butterfly-boned beauty feast omega in heat.
“Have you already left a mark on Chu Wanning?”
SHI MEI is willing to bet that no — in the end, shizun, even if we depend on you, does not look like the type who will openly submit and allow himself to be vulnerable and defenseless until he completely subdues himself, just to protect himself emotionally.
But SHI MEI is not like that — his heart belonged to you from the very beginning, and if you had played well, you would not have ended up here.
“Do you like my nest?... I've been building it for you for a long time. Mo Ran did a good job of getting you here, but I thought I should also do my part, like a good omega...”
His skin is soft and cool, with beautiful shoulders and a flexible neck, completely uncovered and clean, without even a hint of someone else's mark.
“Or do you prefer sloppy cold omegas? I can be like that.”
Your thighs are hot, much warmer than his skin, and sitting on them is very comfortable and exciting, making him relax and feel even more heated.
“What did you like about him? His cold? His unsociability? Do you like omegas that are tough on the outside but soft on the inside? Do you like touchy-feely? Or the way he was constantly scenting you and was addicted to you?”
Shi Mei is not in heat soon, but he knows that these pills cause forced estrus — they are often used on his omega relatives, but SHI MEI could not even imagine before that he would use them for this.
(he could)
“Just one bite... you'll take responsibility, won't you?”

on human animals and animal humans. (reposted school essay)
Humans navigate the boundary between humanity and animality and where we draw the line of personhood.  We allow some animals to cross the boundary and become persons, and some humans intentionally cross the boundary and become animals. When humans cross into animality, they may look at the boundary of personhood from a different side – the animals become persons, and humans unpersons. In ‘Grizzly Man’, Herzog (2005) presents the idea that Timothy Treadwell retreated into the animal kingdom to avoid his ‘human’ problems. Patricia Taxxon (2023) proposes using the identity of an animal to reclaim the dehumanisation of being marginalised.
Living with bears is made to parallel Timothy changing his name and lying about his heritage – a way to reinvent himself. He seemed to refer to himself as on the bears' side, wanting to “mutually mutate into a wild animal” (Herzog, 2005). There is also a continuous reflection on his lack of connection to ‘the human world’, particularly his struggles with women. One could argue that the reason he died is because he went back to the bears after being rejected by the human world (getting into an argument with an airline employee). But this wasn’t about the bears. In his retreat into working with bears to avoid his problems, he did it for his own gain and still maintained anthropocentric beliefs. Instead of seeing humanity as uniquely special, he saw himself as uniquely special, able to defend and help bears with a problem they barely needed help with (the documentary emphasises that poaching was not a big problem in that region) (Herzog, 2005). Sven Haakkanson argues Treadwell’s self-centred ‘help’ may have put the bears in more danger, as it familiarised the bears with humans (Herzog, 2005).
Animality can be retreated to in more ways than just leaving to live in the wilderness. In her video ‘On the Ethics of Boinking Animal People’, Taxxon discusses her relationship to furry identity as an autistic person. She notes the dehumanisation of people who display autistic traits (particularly children) and how comparisons to animals have been used to dehumanise a multitude of marginalised groups – like the positioning of Jewish people as mice or rats in anti-Semetic propaganda to frame them as vermin (Taxxon, 2023). For her, furry identity (engaging with an anthropomorphised animal state and portraying animal traits) is a way of reclaiming this dehumanisation. To see non-human animals as people is to see humans dehumanised into being animalistic as people. As she says “I was treated like a failed human my entire life and […] my response was to become a dog”. But being a furry does not mean seeing yourself as the same as non-human animals in the way Treadwell tried to be (Taxxon, 2023 ; Herzog, 2005). There is an acknowledgement of the human body's limitations (Taxxon asks us to imagine the tail that is wagging) and there is no idea that being a furry makes someone uniquely capable of understanding or engaging with animals (Taxxon, 2023). Once again, it is a retreat into animalism that comes from a human perspective and responds to human problems.
Retreating into animalism is often done for human reasons, and I wonder if connection with animals is even possible through these means. Will we always be just humans in animal costumes?

Xue Yang and the Privilege of Revenge - An Essay
How does Xue Yang’s act of personal revenge compare against the Jianghu’s wider view of revenge? When is violence of this kind deemed acceptable, and who benefits from this? I want to explore the themes within Mo Dao Zu Shi connecting classism and the privileges of revenge as explored through Xue Yang and his relationship with the Jin Clan.
Xue Yang’s major act of revenge is against the Chang Clan, the eradication of the entire family. His revenge is motivated by Chang Ci’an’s act of violence against him as a child. This act of violence involved the destruction of his hand and his childhood innocence, as far as the reader understands from the story he tells about himself.
Xue Yang actually considered this seriously. “Of course,” he replied, as if it was an odd question. “The finger was mine, but those lives belonged to others. No number of lives would’ve been enough. It was only fifty or so people—how could that be enough to pay for my finger?”
As an orphan on the streets, he was a member of society that is considered disposable, where finding justice for any crime would be near impossible when the perpetrator is higher up - worth more - in the eye of society than you. There is no over arcing justice system within the Clans, they police themselves.
In defiance of his low class position, Xue Yang places his life as more valuable than the Chang Clan and uses his act of violence to apply his personal world view on the material world. The initial act of violence taken against Xue Yang was intended to show the opposite; that his life is viewed as lacking to wider society. The fact that Chang Ci’an did not face any explicitly mentioned repercussions for this is proof that the Clans believe that Xue Yang is not someone of any importance to consider worrying about making amends with. Xue Yang’s act of revenge can be constructed as proving to them and the world that he does matter.
This dehumanisation he is treated with is repeated throughout Mo Dao Zu Shi. After working for the Jin, he is beaten and left for dead as his worth was only through his value to the Jin Clan’s research. There is no need to allow him to leave respectfully as the Jins correctly believe he would not be missed nor would anyone fight for Xue Yang’s justice in that situation. He is constantly compared to animals, and even his physical features are described as more animalistic than the other characters to emphasise his position within the narrative.
Instead, he grinned widely, baring his canine teeth in his direction.
Xue Yang reacts to this repeated mistreatment by turning it around. He looks down on the people around him, steals from them, threatens them, and turns them into fierce corpses. He takes any action to make them feel afraid or frustrated rather than superior to him. His revenge against the Chang fits into this model.
In the ‘Villainous Friends’ extra, his response of aggression is contrasted against Jin Guangyao’s response of civility. Jin Guangyao also came from a lower class background and was insulted for it. His response was to conform himself to appeal to their idealised worldview of a high class cultivator through obedience to his father and replication of their mannerisms. Xue Yang’s internal viewpoint contrasts this as he is not intending to change anyone’s mind, rather he asserts his own position that he matters through enacting violence. When the previous actions of Jin Guangyao come to light, his position within the eyes of the Jianghu shifts and they revert to seeing him as that lower class, dehumanised being, right alongside Xue Yang.
“Jin Guangyao later got rid of Xue Yang. What a perfect example of dog biting dog.”
Xue Yang’s continued comparisons with the Jin Clan illustrates the intersections of power and violence with Mo Dao Zu Shi. Xue Yang committed his first act of revenge against the Chang Clan when he was a guest cultivator working for the Jin. As we know, the Jins shielded him from the justice Xiao Xingchen wanted to have enacted because Xue Yang was helping them behind the scenes. There is irony in the fact that the Clan held most responsible for punishing Xue Yang’s act of revenge was the Jin Clan when compared against their own actions against the Wen Clan. The Jin Clan upheld the taking of the Wens clan land and the imprisonment of the remaining family members. The view of the cultivation world at that time was that the whole Clan should be held accountable, regardless of their own actions within the war.
Another guest cultivator stood up. “Of course it’s different. The Wen dogs committed all manner of evil deeds. They deserved to fall in such disgrace. All we’re doing is retaliating in kind, an eye for an eye. Giving them a taste of their own medicine. Where’s the fault in that?”
Revenge is thus seen by the Jianghu as a way of levelling the scales between two people and there is no fault in this. Xue Yang’s act falls in line with this way of thinking, and falls in line even more so with the Jin’s treatment of the Wens.
The morality of the Jianghu shows that revenge against an entire clan is justified, and that each and every family member can and should be held liable. The only ones who aren’t are those who surrendered to the Jin Clan, allying their power with theirs.
“Because the Wen dogs committed so many evil deeds, everyone with the surname of Wen can be killed without exception—do I understand you right? Many renegade clans from Qishan surrendered and joined the alliance, and they’ve since found support with the Jin Clan of Lanling. If I’m not mistaken, I see a few guests at this very banquet who used to be the family heads of clans affiliated with the Wen Clan.”
From this, the act of revenge also acts as a move to gain power, eradicating those who opposed or could future oppose the Jin sect. This Jin act in the same way that they protected Xue Yang, defending only those who benefit their interests. This also proves how shallow the ideologies of the Jianghu are. They will not stick to their prior beliefs if there is some way to benefit, or if the subject of their attention is of a lower class to them. The only ones who succeed and gain happiness in their own right are those that leave the Jianghu entirely, shown through Mianmian, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji at the end of the novel.
Through the comparisons drawn throughout the novel by Xue Yang’s close proximity to the Jin Clan, ideas of how and who is allowed to take revenge intersect with classism. Violence is used by those who have the privilege of power to defend themselves, and thus this violence becomes justified in the eyes of the people.

From a New York Times Article: The kind of protests the German Government is banning on grounds of being "antisemitic, islamist and terror-sympathising" :
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Terrorist-sympathisers and Antisemites according to the German Government: Jewish people, children and people who say "war is bad"
Not to mention the ridiculous racism and dehumanisation of treating palestinian immigrants as some manner of mindless animalistic hivemind that would be "emotionalized" by protests and vigils mourning dead children, and banning protests on the grounds alone that people with palestinian ethnicity might be attending.

When it comes to Dracula’s character, it is always worth noting that while he is indeed a sickening and vile man with none of the redeeming qualities recent media has given him, these qualities were born out of xenophobia on Bram Stoker’s part.
With Victorian fears surrounding foreign domination of the land, especially from Eastern Europe, it is no wonder Dracula’s character is written the way he is. He is an Eastern European man described to have animalistic features and the nature of a predator who wishes to take root in England and spread his infliction, feasting on the blood of innocent English women. Not to mention the hair on his palms likely being a reference to an old myth I’m not sure I can say without tumblr murdering me, but it’s pretty easy to search up said myth and the negative connotations that would have surrounded it, as well as Bram’s intent with said detail.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned it’s that ‘Dracula is a monster who wears the skin of a man and this is an example of great horror’ and ‘Dracula being dehumanised and compared to a predator is written based on Xenophobic beliefs’ are ideas that can co-exist. It is genius horror as it creates a sense of unease in his actions, especially when he attempts to mimic the manners of a human, but when doing deeper literary analysis, you cannot ignore that this horror was written by a Victorian and for a Victorian audience, and would thus reflect societal fears of the time. Most Gothic Horror novels tend to reflect societal fears at the time, take Frankenstein or The Picture of Dorian Gray for example.
I suppose my point here is that yes Dracula is a deeply disturbing and discomforting villain, but when doing a more in depth literary analysis on him and his actions, you cannot separate Bram Stoker’s beliefs and intent from the character. This goes for a lot of things in the novel, and old novels in general, hence why critical thinking is a very important skill to have when going into them, but I’m mainly pointing out Dracula’s double-sided coin here because someone’s gotta be the Dracula apologist on this site! (This is a joke of course, I am in no way a Dracula apologist I just do way too many mini analyses on him in my spare time)
I have probably made a post similar to this before but I do not remember doing so and therefore I will treat this as a completely new and original post. The joys of having ADHD and choosing the worst character ever to fixate on.

hi .. i have a question for you
i think im an otherkin?? but i dont really know if i am??
and i think you are one (sorry if this is wrong !!) but can you tell me how you knew ??
hi!! you're right, I am under the alterhuman/nonhuman umbrella!! specifically I'm not really any animal, I am a psychological therian which means my nonhumanity is linked to the way that my brain works. I am some kind of creature, if you search "alien" on my art blog (@beastwhimsy) you'll find what I am!! being this thing makes me very happy, and it is not detrimental to my mental health in any way. <- I've talked to my therapist about this and he's fascinated by it and supports the fact that I'm nonhuman!!
ever since I was a little kid I've been acting differently to the other kids because it made me happier- I would walk along fences like a cat, I'd consistently and constantly imagine myself with wings every day, and the alien species I invented back then to encapsulate my experiences actually stayed with me until the present day!! I have a theory that my nonhuman experiences link to my neurodivergent experiences, as I was outcast from social groups because I acted strangely, and I didn't feel like I was the same as my peers. today, my default sense of self is as some kind of creature, my spacial awareness matches the limbs and features of this creature more than it does my actual human form, and it makes me happier to visualise myself as this creature!! there are many, many ways to be alterhuman- for some its spiritual, others it is psychological, for some it is a coping mechanism for something and some do it for fun or because they feel happier as an alterhuman.
some common experiences for therians/nonhumans include phantom limbs (the experience of having spacial awareness of limbs and features corresponding to an animal/creature) and mental shifts (feeling as though your mindset has shifted away from human thought and feeling processes to become more animalistic, e.g. for a dog therian they would become much more focussed on smells as a way to experience the world around them, and they may think less in words and more in images and feelings. these states are usually temporary and not harmful or hindering, though they can be annoying).
you have a higher chance of being nonhuman if you are neurodivergent or have experienced dehumanisation throughout your life, but anyone can fall under the alterhuman umbrella regardless of your childhood or your neurological makeup!!
last thing, it isn't always but it can be tied into your gender!! for example, I use it/that as well as he/him because it feels more in line with how I perceive myself and it makes me happy. it is a reclamation of dehumanising terms in a sense.

Anyone that genuinely ships Snow and Lucy Gray are kind of concerning. The weird dehumanising, almost animalistic way he talked about her was actually appalling and I truly cannot imagine viewing that ship in a remotely endearing light.

how do you feel about the concept of werewolves being animalistic? what i mean is do you like the idea of them being predatory over their pack, or the idea that werewolves might become aggressive when someone messes with their pack or family? and here’s a another one- how werewolves tend to be commonly in polyamorous relationships due to their pack lifestyles? i think it’s kind of cool. then again i love the idea of just close families and their desire to protect one another
I love animalistic werewolves so much. Generally I just love the idea of human(oid) characters being animalistic and kind of closer to their natural instincts and habits than more ‘acceptable ones’.
That said, werewolves in my rewrite will vary on this. Ones that live closer to humans and have a variety of human/werewolf heritage between the pack members will be more ‘socialised’ and have more ‘acceptable’ behaviour, and those that live further with very minimal human heritage will have a lot more of the wolf-like characteristics.
However werewolves are less aggressive to humans in general than they are weary, and avoidant (like normal wolves are). Those that don’t have frequent human contact will remain as far from humans as they can get. But they are still quite terriorial, if a human hunts on their hunting grounds, it’s kind of a ‘you fucked around and now you’re finding out’ situation.
Werewolves aren’t impacted much on a biological level when it comes to polyamory, since wolves are typically (though not exclusively) monogamous creatures. However, socially, it’s a lot more common to see because werewolves tend to be more accepting of that stuff. It’s not that it’s actually more common in werewolves, just more Polyam folk are open about it, and those that aren’t Polyam will probably still be dating someone who is.
However. On the topic of packs and their family-like dynamic. I feel the need to state- alphas don’t exist in packs in the way people like to think they do. In domesticated dogs, an alpha-beta like system does exist, but in wild wolves it does not. The ‘Alpha’ is simply the one that looks after everyone.
So in my rewrite, The alpha is the parent, older sibling, responsible aunt/uncle that babysits their nieces and nephews all the time. They do tend to be the strongest, as they’re often the oldest and the most capable to take care of and protect everyone, but they’re not the most ‘dominant’ one. They’re just the one that confiscates the sticks off of the three year olds before they can shove them up their noses and smacks you upside the head when you almost get yourself killed so you won’t do it again.
— also something else
Presenting werewolves as animalistic is not inherently problematic, but I do feel the need to say this due to how werewolves are presented canonically and the existence of racist tropes in media. Werewolves are displayed as a racial minority, and it’s not uncommon in fantasy media for racial minorities and their culture to be displayed through animalistic races, to try and dehumanise them. This is just to say, if you are presenting animalistic werewolves, do try and be mindful of the tropes that exist, and try not to do what Jesson did and go ‘oh but here’s an equivalent of their experiences to the experiences of actual irl racial minorities!’… because that’s weird. Even ignoring the implications of making werewolves a minority when Jess has a self-admitted werewolf fetish, and an observed saviour complex.

For the fic ask... Christian/Lucha
oooh, interesting! i have not written it, but if i did...
i headcanon luchasaurus/killswitch as a kind of hybrid man-dino, so i think it would be a pretty dark fic! putting under a cut for themes of dehumanisation, conditioning and abusive relationships
i imagine it starts with christian, over time, emphasising and encouraging his more bestial side at the detriment of his humanity. using praise and physical pleasure as a conditioning tool (maybe allowing lucha to fuck him, or be fucked by him, or even just to touch himself) to make him more violent, more animalistic, and more agreeable to christian's wants and desires.
i imagine the increasingly diminished part of his mind that's human trying to push back, to resist in whatever way he can, which is something that christian is all too happy to beat out of him.
i don't know if the story would end happily, with luchasaurus successfully rebelling and freeing himself from christian's yoke, or badly, with killswitch becoming his perfectly trained pet monster, capitulating to his master's every horrific whim

Opinion: It's so much harder to grow up as an overweight child than as a weird skinny child (both are pretty bad though to be fair). My sister and I grew up in a very broken home; bastard of a dad, crazy but fun mom lol. Lotsa personal things happened that led way to my sister and I to having different eating disorders. Her with bed and I with ana. And I will never ever forget the way adults and children alike acted towards her. It was animalistic and venomous and I've never seen such depravedness until I saw how people interacted with my sister. But you know what, I was fucking babied for being underweight! The worst of it was being frequently being pulled aside by teachers as they questioned about what I ate at home and getting called a bag of bones. I was mainly picked on for being quiet and being poor but boys and girls would defend me for being underweight. So I never felt that it was my thinness making me unlovable and ugly. No one would protect my sister but me and a few other girls. She would come home everyday from being bullied at school to being bullied by neighborhood "friends". Not even 10 years old and she couldn't take a break from anything. Yet she remained a tight suitcase, never let anyone see her cry about it, she turned to food for comfort. Food for us was how we were showed love. Our mom would take us out of the house away from our dad to get MickeyD's or when our dad didn't want to verbally apologize he would get us ice cream. I would refuse to eat but seeing my sister finally be able to breathe and enjoy herself could bring tears to my eyes. My sister and I are both grown now, and she has lost weight and you know what, she's one of the prettiest women I've ever seen. It's funny how that works as her bullies aren't so attractive as adults lmao.
uaghhh, as someone who grew up as a fat kid i'm surprised at your like, level of understanding and self-reflection and genuine honesty regarding your experience vs your sisters. i don't like kind of measuring ppl's pain as x is worse than y but fatphobia really is built into society in a truly structural way and it hurts so fucking much growing up with it like a shadow over you and everything you do lmfao, i swear. my heart just absolutely aches for both you and your sister because you obviously each went through some absolute bullshit, like it's awful on either side. though it just fucks me up so much and takes me back to childhood to hear that ppl would really have it out for your sister and that hardly anyone would defend her whereas you were at least supported in that regard. it was the same for me, like ppl absolutely took pleasure in dehumanising me and scorning me for being overweight - it was literally like i wasn't even a person and i know that sounds dramatic but in the most literal sense of the phrase, it really felt like that at times. just white hot shame following you everywhere, and your peers despising you for it. i think it's interesting how using food as a crutch when raising a kid can have such polar opposite yet equally unhealthy and awful effects on a childs mentality and their perception of body image, but it is so so common for us as people to find comfort and companionship and even a vice in food/hunger. that is definitely used against us in general, esp in the furthering of diet culture, it's a fucking hellscape. i'm wishing nothing but health and stability and self love for both you and your sister in the future - those people who messed with her are fucking demons, idc LOL. i'm so proud of you for working your way through that. sending so much love to you both! x
