Today would have been the 50th birthday of the Inmortal Butterfly Anisong Singer, Koji Wada.

Making his debut with the iconic single Buttwr-Fly, the opening theme song of the Digimon Adventure anime series, Koji would go on to perform many more openings, endings and insert songs for the subsequent Digimon series until his tragic untimely passing in 2016. In his memory, Bandai Namco created the Digimon Hudiemon.

His legacy will always be with us. And one day I hope we to fly with you, butterfly.

Hello everyone, today I wanna talk about the people behind DanPri characters (a.k.a. their VAs/seiyuu, though they do more than just voice act). Some kind of introduction I guess.

So without further ado, let's start! :D

Seiichirou Yamashita

Nicknames: Seichi (Koba, Reiou), Sei-chan (Tatsumaru), Yamashita-san/kun (Kawai-kun, Uzawa-kun, almost everyone else) Birthday: May 21, 1992 Hometown: Hiroshima Agency: Office Osawa Some well-known roles outside PriPara: Touken Ranbu - Yagen Toushirou & Aizen Kunitoshi Horimiya - Toru Ishikawa Twisted Wonderland - Ace Trappola

Shougo's voice actor, the most normal one among WITH in a glance. His voice is generally low-to-mid tone, but he's also good at voicing mischievous early-teen boys. Seichi chose to be a voice actor because he's always loved acting, but he actually longed to be an actor. However, he sees voice acting as the most realistic path for him.

Seichi debuted from 2012, but it wasn't until 2016 that he started getting main roles. A year later, he got the role as Shougo. When he found out about PriPara stage play, where the main casts' VA also act on stage, he basically told the director that "If there's a stage play for DanPri too one day, I'm available (wink)". And yeah, that dream was no longer a dream, as he got to be Shougo's actor on the stage play.

Role in WITH: Tsukkomi (the "normal one")

If you watch them enough, you'd know that Kobatatsu and Reiou are known to be fooling around while Seichi reminds them to behave. He gets them to be back on track in radio shows, free talk sessions in lives, etc. However, according to Koba and Reiou, he's actually more carefree than it seems, and sometimes went out somewhere on his own without notice. In some fan reports, Seichi's often seen to be the one being doted on the most, and Koba-Reiou admitted through a Q&A session that he's the one that feels like the youngest despite being the tsukkomi.

Tatsuyuki Kobayashi

Nicknames: Kobatatsu (fans/almost everyone), Ta-tan (Seichi), Tatsuyuki (Seichi) Birthday: April 21, 1989 Hometown: Chiba Agency: avex Some well-known roles outside PriPara: King of Prism - Ace Ikebukuro Twisted Wonderland - Cater Diamond Paradox Live (Stage play) - Satsuki Ito

Asahi's voice actor, literal personification of bright morning sunshine on stage. He's actually more of a singer and stage actor than voice actor. He started his career as a singer after winning the 7th Anisong Grand Prix in 2013. You can see some footages of it on Youtube (here's the digest of his performances). After debuting as a singer, he also started acting on stage plays since 2016.

Kobatatsu's career as a voice actor started in 2015, and Asahi is his first non-nameless supporting role. His voice is generally mid-to-high, and he's good at playing cheerful, happy-go-lucky characters. Seichi said that Kobatatsu has a habit to talk in childish voice outside from work.

Role in WITH: Main performer + co-mentor(?)

Due to his background, he's the most experienced stage performer among WITH members. And because of that, he became the "main dancer" of WITH, especially during their early days. He also helped the other two on learning choreographies (e.g. Tick-Tock Magical Time for their first solo event) and on performing in general. Seichi and Reiou said that they learned a lot from him during the rehearsals of their stage play.

Reiou Tsuchida

Nickname: Tsuchi (Tatsumaru), Reiou, Tsuchida-san Birthday: January 6, 1993 Hometown: Hokkaido Agency: 81produce Some well-known roles outside PriPara: Ensemble Stars - Tsukasa Suou VS AMBIVALENZ - Taiyo Haruno & Subaru Takaya

Koyoi's voice actor, one of the funniest guys in the industry. He started his career as voice actor in 2012, but he doesn't have that much leading roles yet. He has quite distinctive voice, but it's pretty versatile. Reiou started becoming more well-known after voicing in Ensemble Stars in 2015, and he got the role as Koyoi in 2017.

Although he seems so unserious, he's actually very multitalented. He's good at imitating other people's voice, drawing, making stories, singing, and so on. Reiou even drew WITH members on their birthday back in 2020 (here's the link: Shougo, Koyoi, Asahi). He started working on his own manga since 2023 and self-publishing it on his Twitter.

Role in WITH: Ghost-director

I've written about how Koyoi's past story was developed from Reiou's idea, but that's not the only thing he contributed to WITH's back story. He proposed many ideas for WITH Stage as they rehearsed, e.g. the dance battle scene between Koyoi and Shinya and DARKNESS SOUL duet scene with Shinya. The director originally asked him to do Koyoi's solo song on that part, but Reiou felt that it'd be more fitting to involve Shinya more.

He also came up with a concept for Quest Milky Way performance during their #IIZE Tour in 2019. Reiou asked the audience to light up their penlights in their own color instead of WITH's members, because WITH were going around the galaxy in that song, and the penlight colors represent everyone's colors as the "stars" (idols) in the galaxy.

Kentarou Kawai

Nickname: Ken-chan (Seichi), Kawataro (some fans and DanPri members), Tono (Uzawa-kun), Kawai-kun (almost everyone) Birthday: April 7, 1997 Hometown: Tokyo Agency: Japan Music Entertainment

Shinya's voice actor, a newcomer who debuted in 2019. He focuses more on being an actor than voice actor, so his only role as a seiyuu is Shinya so far. He's especially close with Uzawa-kun, often goes out together and even invited Uzawa-kun to his family's home. Some fans called the two of them "Tarotaro" (from Kentarou and Shoutarou).

WITH members often praises Kawai-kun as a very earnest, polite, and hard-working kid. He's also a certified sword-fighting actor, and showcases his fighting skills through videos on his SNS accounts (example here). Among all DanPri casts, he's the one that often holds streaming to interact with fans via Instagram Live.

Shoutarou Uzawa

Nickname: Uzawa-kun (almost everyone), Taroumaru (fans) Birthday: January 22, 1997 Hometown: Chiba Agency: 81produce

Ushimitsu's voice actor, also a newcomer who works in the same company as Reiou. He has mid-to-high tone voice. He's voiced many supporting roles in anime, movie dub, and games. Before working under his current company, he was under Japan's children theater company.

Uzawa-kun is a Pretty Series fan, and he was really excited to get the role as Ushimitsu. He's also the one who played Adopara the longest (or, rather, the only one who really played it) among DanPri casts. He's really close with Kawai-kun, but due to the long stage play rehearsal, he used to call Kawai-kun "Tono" (Master) everywhere, even when they meet outside work.

Tatsumaru Tachibana

Nickname: Tatsumaru Birthday: April 21, 1991 Hometown: Fukui Prefecture Agency: Stay Luck Some well-known roles outside PriPara: The God of High School - Mori Jin Aoashi - Eisaku Ootomo Kabukicho Sherlock - Toratarou Kobayashi

Mario's voice actor, an experienced stage actor who started his career as a voice actor in 2019. His natural voice is mid-to-high and sounds mild. He started acting since the age of 10, joining his father's theater company and performing with traveling troupe. He became the theater company's chairman in 2010-2015 before deciding to reside in Tokyo and work there.

Like Kawai-kun, he's also a certified sword-fighting actor, in addition to specializing in playing as a female on stage. His career as a voice actor is still quite short compared to his acting experience, but he's been climbing up in popularity and started getting more main roles. Among all DanPri casts, he's the closest with Seichi due to having voiced as main characters in a series together.

Oh, and he also has a youtube channel, although it doesn't seem to be that active lately.

If you could be a singer and could choose whatever kind of voice you wanted, what kind of voice would you pick? If you had to pick between Wakana, Keiko, and Hikaru , - who would you choose?

Ohh, that is such an interesting (but quite difficult) question. I never actually thought about this...One thing I know for sure is that I'd not pick Hikaru's voice (sorry Hi-chan🙃) Her voice is cool and versatile but it is best suited for the type of music I don't particularly enjoy so I probably wouldn't have a lot of fun using it XD I can occasionally indulge in a bit of edgier or more generic anisong stuff but at the end of the day, I will always gravitate towards more classical, somber and ballad-y pieces.

I don't think I can choose between Keiko and Wakana😣 It's a mixture of both of their voices which creates the perfect sound for me. Keiko has such a unique timbre, I mean, who wouldn't want to have a voice like that? But somehow, I hesitate to pick her...

Ugghhh, maybe it wold ultimately be Wakana? Let's be real here, I'm a huger sucker for heart-wrenching ballads with a ton of strings. If I were a singer, I'd sing one tragic song after the other XD And Wakana is certainly the best choice for that!

Whenever a big creator passes it always comes out how they were actively working on another big upcoming project. Akira Toriyama was working on the next Dragon Quest, contributing to the new Dragon Ball show, and probably some other stuff we don’t even know about yet. Anisong legend Ichiro Mizuki, who passed last year, had a concert literal days prior. Kentaro Miura had put out a new chapter of Berserk not long before. There’s something beautiful, tragic but beautiful, about how the body might give out, but the soul presses on in spite.

I'd count Asu e no Houkou despite the fact it's a vn opening, for sure. a step closer to being pure anisong, Brave Shine is also good enough to where I loved it even before engaging with Fate properly (during the period where I thought it was mediocre because of the original anime)

COLORS is burned into my brain and will be until I die. I imagine that's the case for most people who either watched it or osmosed it

I'm not listing any from Monogatari because we'd be here all day. an absolutely iconic run.

my personal bias would say to include Dunbine Tobu or Time for L-Gaim, but those are kind of boomer picks

Suzuna in RIOT Land

Suzuna Nagihara had passed RIOT MUSIC’s “Virtual Artist Audition Vol. 1” and had accepted the offer to join with the Virtual Music Agency. Neither how she found out about their audition nor whether or not she struggled with feelings of nervousness or sailed through the judge’s critical eyes with flying colors is important to this story. The audition itself a stepping stone for what Suzuna Nagihara truly wanted: To support people everywhere and add color to their lives using her singing. That voice of hers, light as a feather sailing through precise pitches yet heavy as a truck in how it could gush the tears out of the hardest grown men.

Perhaps fitting that she would be one of the first RIOT MUSIC artists to perform in North America, Suzuna Nagihara young life served her a Thanksgiving Dinner’s worth of unique experience, including a study-abroad stint that left her pretty comfortable speaking and singing in English when given the chance. More important than that though, those experiences have imparted onto her a unique and keen sense to feel out the emotions of listeners and create songs with a kind of healing energy sewn, interwoven, into their sonic fabric. It’s a gift she’s determined to win over the world with, taking the edge off everyone she possibly can along the way.

Despite her empathic touch and the signature river of beautiful sky blue hair gushing out of her head, and putting aside her penchant for creating emotionally charged slow burn ballads, Suzuna’s otherwise a happy, normal girl. Look at her twitter and you’ll often see her posting pictures of sweets and… burgers. A lot Burgers! For her, she excises all the negativity that comes with left and turns into fuel for her music, in hopes her songs will absorb and ease the sadness of others. Come to think of it, that’s just like what a good Hamburger does!

Though, we don’t know if she’d like being compared to hamburgers…

Episode 16: FLAGS

“FLAGS” is the 25th single released by T.M.Revolution. The title track was used as an opening theme song for the anime Sengoku BASARA and game Sengoku BASARA Chronicle Heroes. “The party must go on” was used as the ending theme song for the anime Sengoku BASARA. The limited edition includes a bonus DVD with the music video and its making of and footage related to the anime.

The FLAGS PV was shown at Otakon 2013 and his Anisong Compilation Album “Geisha Boy” was released EXCLUSIVELY First at Otakon 2013! The first time in history for any of his albums to be released overseas before Japan.

I'm so worried about what she's going to do next. Will she continue to sing? On the one hand, the fact that the contract was not renewed is logical - it is obvious that the agency could not offer her anything new. But what's next?

I have honestly felt quite drained in the past few weeks.T_T After getting back from Japan I went straight back to work. I haven’t really had time to rest properly. This has frustrated me to no end because I still want to write a bunch of reports about my Japan trip but damn it, I just can’t bring myself to do it *sighs* Anyways, enough complaining, I will get to that stuff eventually! Now let’s see what we can do about your question.

It’s a really good question and I have been wondering the same thing. Hikaru’s current situation is quite literally a mess but in her New Year’s post she was pretty straight-forward about wanting to continue to make music in some shape or form. I expect her to make some guest appearance this year and maybe we’ll even see the one or the other collaboration (possibly with Keiko). She doesn’t seem to have the means to organise proper one-man-lives at the moment so she has to rely on small gigs with other artists. Let’s hope she can move past that soon. Don’t get me wrong, I am happy she has some work at least but performing three songs in a tiny live house in front of a hundred people won’t get her far in terms of reaching a wider audience (or even her loyal fanbase). I know it’s not necessarily her goal anymore to become popular but I would want her events to be a bit more accessible.

I am glad she has her theater commitment right now because that seems to keep her busy and happy. I briefly mentioned it in my report of the Ambient Border -DAWN- event but it’s obvious that she feels very comfortable with the C.C.C theater group members. It’s a good thing to see her this carefree and passionate about something. The fact that Hikaru gets to sing not only one but two songs (Ambient Border & Under the Rain) for the upcoming play gives me hope that there will be some sort of CD release accompanying the show. Also, please let there be a broadcast like last time! I am so curious about her performance!

With all her involvement in theater work, I wonder if this is maybe her slow transition into musicals? I mean, it would be the next logical step for her. It’s what Hikaru started out doing as a kid and teenager. It’s obviously something she enjoys and from what we have seen so far, she can quite masterfully tackle the acting part. These days there are quite a lot of Japanese artists who are doing musicals once in a while. Her vocal range might not be suitable for all roles but then again, if singers with the most generic anisong voices (e.g .May’n or Nana Mizuki) can do musicals, so can Hikaru!! Unfortunately, the Spice guy and his theater gang don’t strike me as particularly influential in the entertainment industry so they probably cannot help Hikaru get a foot in the door of the musical world.

As far as Hikaru’s YouTube videos are concerned, I have no idea where she is heading with her channel. I am enjoying her stuff a lot but it doesn’t really seem to lead anywhere. There is no way she is gonna attract a wider audience with her current content, especially since there are a ton of other Japanese YouTubers out there who are doing the exact same thing. That specific influencer/content creator market is already very saturated. In my opinion, she should really post more music-related videos because music is what she is known for so she has a big advantage in that field...

JPOP! Japanese pop is so bubbly and fun; I enjoy listening to it immensely.

There's several subgenres of JPOP that I like such as anisong, vocaloid, idol hell, and vtuber stuff. Even though you didn't ask for this, I'll put a song from each subgenre that I like because why not!

Anisong: Unlasting - LiSA

Vocaloid: Wah Wah World - Giga x Mitchi M

Idol hell: Dream with You - Ayumu Uehara (technically you can also put this under anisong but idols...)

Vtuber stuff: ねねねねねねねね!大爆走 - Momozuzu Nene (vtubers can also release english songs but this is probably my favorite JP vtuber and my favorite song of hers)

I can't pick one item from my merch collection. I love collecting merchandise from the things I like; I support what I love that way.

There's a particular figure that I treasure a lot, though.

Even though I'm not a big fan of Futari Wa PreCure, I like Cure Black's original design. I have her 15th-anniversary figure, which is probably my collection's highlight. Unlike the majority of my merch that I have stored in a cabinet because I have no other place to put it, she sits happily on my dresser alongside an Ai Miyashita summer figure a friend bought me for my birthday and a new Asuna figure I purchased around a month ago that wouldn't fit in my merch cabinet.

Wide-Angle Lens: Where would you travel if you could travel anywhere?

I'd want to go to Japan! I'd like to go to Akiba in Toyko because I've heard it's merch heaven. One day I'll get there; I'll make sure of it.
