I’ve been thinking a lot about how Spider felt when he hit puberty and started growing facial hair, making him even more different to the Na’vi. I wonder if he hated it.

Also the inherent tenderness of a boy trusting someone else enough to help him shave for the first time… something about it makes my chest hurt. I really tried to capture it in Foreign Body but there’s so much more that I wish I’d left space for.

I just solved an art related issue i've had for years so I figured i'd share in case anyone else has the same problem:

I've always wanted to be one of those artists who could happily scribble away in a sketchbook on the daily. Just whatever they felt like with no pressure whatsoever.

But my dumb commitment-issues monkey brain never let me do that. I'd just hoard nice sketchbooks and never want to touch them. Because I wanted to be able to bring it with me when I travel, without having to hide it from people like it was a porn mag.

Solution:

I bought myself my favourite sketchbook. A nice fancy moleskine that I can't even really afford, but that I love to use and that I can travel with. This one I keep my sketches nice and neat in. Take my time with them and make sure they're ones I don't mind showing to people.

At the same time I bought one of those store brand sketchbooks you find in bookshops. Like the spiral bound ones with yellowed paper that cost like £3. And I told myself that this one will never leave my room. Will never be opened by anyone but me. And that if I do happen to sketch something in it that I DO like, I can cut it out and glue it into my 'nice' sketchbook.

Monkey brain just had to be given both options, and a clear difference between the two to make it feel safe.

Hey Quil!

I was just curious if you had done any April Fools jokes on people yesterday, or if you had any pranks played on you (online or in person.) I saw the booping thing and it looked really fun!

I wasn’t able to do anything major, but I did do a few minor pranks, including:

trying to convince someone that it was actually March 32 and we got an extra day of March because April was so short (and then they realized it was a leap year)

switching the language on one of my family member’s phones to French (I did end up learning some new words!)

pretending to see a gigantic seagull outside (makes slightly more sense in context)

Anyway, happy April! I’m wishing you good luck with all of your schoolwork! (Also I’m emotionally time traveling to boop you!)

Hi, Amethyst! I did not play any april fools jokes nor have any played on me outside of the booping. I must confess that I forgot both that it was april fools and that pranking people on april fools was a thing. It did not occur to me in the slightest

Instead I spent most of the day finalizing my homework before the week started (my weeks start on Tuesday this semester). So I’m glad you got to play some pranks!

Love the language one! Though I’m sure that’s no surprise. Are you studying French? I took 2 semesters in order to get my associates in Spanish, but I have forgotten practically everything. i think I still mostly know how to properly pronounce things though, but then again that’s just a general strength of mine when learning new languages (so far).

Happy April to you too! Thank you for the luck; I’ve got a few bigger things I need to knock out, so here’s hoping it goes relatively smooth. And I hope your schoolwork foes well, too!

An important thing to remember as an artist that started out drawing characters crudely and then started learning the fundamentals, at first your art will not look nice.

At first, drawing faces and bodies in different positions will make your characters look weird, then poor perspective will make your characters look weird, and finally when all the kinda things I mentioned above will be dealt with, just the hype of finally knowing how to draw anatomy will bite you in the ass because you can do all these things, you can draw them correctly or close to that, but whether that's figure drawing knowledge gaps, or awkwards poses/composition, or just not a very harmonious combination of realism and stylization in facial features or in general, but your before and after pictures might get this look of "clear objective technical improvement but many would consider it a downgrade"

That's a very common thing. I used to be in this before/after art community, and it was so toxic it was a meme within the community that no matter how much you've improved there will be people that will say that the before is better. There's a seed of truth to these words though, what they fundamentally get wrong is this implication that you "ruined your art"

That's a big example of why you shouldn't listen to non-art people for art advice. Keep going. You're closer to your art dreams than you ever were, you just need to look into all these things like the remaining knowledge gaps or personality to your art you might've lost as you were on your anatomy grind.

Keep creating, keep looking at art that inspires you and try to think of how to make yourself like your art better. Don't get stuck on it, if it begins being unfun, please do take a breather. Also, none of that is objective, people will still prefer things different to what you find beautiful. It's alright, create what you like, that's what this post is about. If you don't wanna, don't focus on aesthetics, just the process of creating art is fun and will eventually get you in the right place, that's what I do, I just occasionally throw in things I like and sometimes they work. Take care.

These are my current thoughts on the topic. I wouldn't take them too close to heart, this is just a blogging site and I'm blogin 👍
