i wanna start making comics but like. i dont really know how??? are there any tips that you could give me perhaps?
hi!
i've been working on trying to compile a list of resources for people (@aangsfrogs--i didn't forget!) who want to make comics for a long time. It would consist of some of my personal tips and a lot of links to other people's PDFs and youtubes. But that's...a hefty project, so if you had any specific questions for the meantime, my askbox is open!
But, for just beginning, here would be my tips:
Read comics. Read manga and webcomics and cartoons and medical comics. There is so much out there, and reading is such a big way to learn. If you see something you like, take a moment to think about why you like it. Are the expressions or colors appealing? Did it make you feel a certain emotion? Analyze what the artist may have done to get across what they did. (Is it the camera angle? the style they chose to draw in? the paneling? the pacing? the color? etc.) Doing this over time will help you recognize the tools available for telling stories through this medium, and you'll be able to put them in your own work.
Try to think about what you want to make comics about. What moves you? What topics interest you? What ideas or tropes do you love in media or think about often? What do you hate and wish was done better? What characters are you drawn to, or what characters do you want to create? (What about them compels you?) I find it's hard to create an idea out of thin air, but if you start writing down random ideas you have, you'll start thinking about them, and over time, you'll have a bank of things to pull from when you want to create.
Lastly, anatomical skill or knowledge of color does not a comic make! You don't have to know much to begin, and there aren't rules. Just start drawing what is meaningful to you!
This is just cursory and doesn't get into super specifics like paneling or scripts or plotting or colors or thumbnailing or....etc, but I'll try to expand my list of resources and get that out! And, hmu if you have any specific questions on topics!
happy drawing~
Book list under readmore:
Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics and his Making Comics. These books are taught in like, every comic class ever. While not my complete favorite, they do a good job of showing some history and fundamentals, and how easy it is to make comics even if you don't have a lot of drawing experience.
99 Ways to Tell a Story: Exercises in Style by Matt Madden: Really good if you don't know how to start analyzing comics. (Also it's just a fun visual exercise.) It shows the same short story done in 99 different styles with different emphasis on different moods and points of view.
The PreHistory of The Far Side: A 10th Anniversary Exhibit by Gary Larson and The Calvin and Hobbes: Tenth Anniversary Book by Bill Watterson: Two great books with work from my two favorite cartoonists. They both have writings from the author about getting ideas, developing stories, and being a comic artist.
Uncanny Bodies: Superhero Comics and Disability, edited by Scott T. Smith and José Alaniz and Black Comics: Politics of Race and Representation, edited by Sheena C. Howard and Ronald L. Jackson II: These two aren't really about making comics, but they are great collections of analysis about old and new comics alike.
By no means a complete list, but some good ones that I can think of off the top of my head.
There's also the book Webtoon School: Everything you need to know about webtoon creation and story writing. To be honest, I didn't read this completely through because it was a bit more fundamental than I was expecting, but it gives a good cursory look of how to write comics if you're just starting out! It covers some history, how to write stories and arcs, etc.
Also, look to your favorite writers! A lot of webtoon/webcomic artists do tutorials or youtube videos. for instance, velnxi has this great tutorial up I really suggest looking at here.

What have been some of your big inspirations/points of education* with your comic work?
*could mean learning resources but also just, good advice you got once or improvements to your workflow you figured out
Thanks for this ask!! :]
I went to the School of Visual Arts, where I majored in Cartooning! A lot of what I learned, I learned from Indie Cartoonist Jason Little and DC/Marvel Editor Joey Cavalieri, both of whom taught multiple classes I've taken (mainly fundamental stuff but there were also some extra classes with them like Jason taught my Digital Comics course and Joey taught my History of Cartooning class). I learned how to draw trees from Jason. And from reading Pogo.
I've drawn a lot of inspiration in my storytelling from both Bone and Hellboy, mostly! Both Jeff Smith and Mike Mignola are masters of pacing in comics, and if you happen to be unfamiliar with their works, I can't recommend them enough. Besides those two, the rich, moody internal monologues of Spider-Man: Blue and Spider-Man: Evolve or Die are things I often think about when it comes to dialogue writing. That and (at least when it comes to writing Rouge's dialogue) my older sister. Just, like, in general. Pay attention to how the people around you speak. It helps a ton when figuring dialogue.
Hellboy is getting mentioned again because Mignola's heavy inks are something I like to look over in order to learn from and improve myself. Hellboy, Carl Barks's Donald Duck comics, Asterix & Obelix, Will Eisner's various works, Calvin and Hobbes ALL have this beauty in their inking that can really inspire. Personally, I'd like to get a bit messier with my inking. Messy inks feel so alive. They're so visually interesting.
For colors, I highly recommend this book. I've read it and re-read it as much as possible. It may be for painters, but cartoonists can and should learn from all kinds of art forms. The works of Moebius were also mega foundational for me in learning how to color my comics. The man knew his palettes and how to not confine himself too much to what's "realistic". Speaking of painters (you may roll your eyes at this one) I'm also a fan of Frank Frazetta.
For panelling, I only have one true inspiration, and that's the work of Tess Stone. I grew up reading Hanna Is Not A Boy's Name. It changed how I viewed the limitations of panelling forever. Of course, it may be harder to find that comic these days, so here's a snippet:
Tumblr media
Basic advice: really really take your time taking in art that you like, and try to reverse-engineer how it was made in your head. Heck, even if there's art you DON'T like, overall, but has elements you DO like, you can learn from that, too!
Okay! Sorry for rambling! Now here's the thing you're actually here for:
How To Think When You Draw collection of REALLY GOOD tutorials for whatever you need, these guys helped me out a ton when I was figuring the jungle scenes early in Infested.
This Pinterest Which Has Absolutely Everything You Can Possibly Think Of For References And Inspiration Sources.
An Extremely Good Font Site That Is Used By Professionals In The Comics Industry To Letter Their Comics.
The Most Important Book Any Cartoonist Can Read
A Different Book By The Same Man About Making Comics (for free, thanks Internet Archive)
Perspective For Comic Book Artists, thanks again Internet Archive
As for workflow... Man, I wish I could give you any kinda advice on that. I'm struggling with it, myself. I guess I've got two things?
If you have multiple deadlines for, say, multiple commissions or something, or you're trying to put out a weekly comic, but you're also doing something else, break the day up into time slots for each project, and switch the moment it's time to. Keep yourself on that schedule. I'm not very good at this.
I draw pretty detailed thumbnails, so sometimes I'll skip the penciling step in comics and blow up the thumbnail to ink over that. It's faster for sure! It's not always the right solution, however.
Thanks for reading! I hope any of what I've said helps at all!

Terra Ignota
One of the things I'm going to start doing this year is write about the books I'm reading. My first off the bat isn't One book, it's four. The four books of the Terra Ignota series by Ada Palmer.
Too Like the Lightning
Seven Surrenders
Will to Battle
Perhaps the Stars
Terra Ignota is a science fiction series set in the 25th Century, several hundred years after the Church Wars made large scale religion illegal. The power of nations and religion have waned, and its wake are the Seven Hives, nations of Philosophy who have no set barriers and borders. From the Hive that bases its traditions on Masonic principles to the Cyberpunk Artists reaching for the stars, each live together in the cities and in shared homes with families of birth or choice (known as 'Bashmates')
The story is told of these Seven Utopias as a Chronicle of their coming fall. Mycroft Canner is a Servicer, a criminal charged with performing duties and paid in food to live, he is also a genius hired by most of the Hive leaders to perform various tasks. Through his observations, philosophy tracts, and increasing instability as the series goes on, we see the world is not as perfect as lead to believe.
The series begins with a theft that inevitably unearths several competing conspiracies that keep the world going, of revealing a strange young man who each Hive Leader has a claim on for their successor. And somewhere, in a small little tent, is a boy who can will anything in to existence. Bring toys to life, drawings in to reality, anything.
Terra Ignota is a dense fucking quadrology. Much of its style and heightened language is based on Enlightenment Period style writing (Hobbes and Voltaire get a LOT of love in these books). One part science fiction story decrying the perception of Utopia and One Part Enlightenment Tract, I would not recommend this series for casual readers. Honestly, I could see philosophy and poli sci classes using the text for a class.
I've experienced this series through a combination of audio and reading the paperbacks. The narrators, Jefferson Mays (for the first book) and T Ryder Smith (for books 2-4) are beautifully performed and add depth to the walls of words on the page. I highly recommend the audiobooks, and I heard that a full cast audio drama was made of the first two books. I'll have to check them.
I recommend Terra Ignota for hardcore Sci Fi fans who like to be asked direct, deep thoughts and challenge their perceptions.

hi! i love ur blog so so much it’s literally the most aesthetic thing ever! i was just wondering if you could please recommend some books to help me get out of a reading slump? any genre i don’t mind! thank you so much and have a blessed day 🤍
hi! thank you so much <33
when i'm in a slump, i generally read fantasy, or essays, or short stories, and here are a few of my favourites that have gotten me out of slumps —
essays:
pop song by larissa pham: semi-memoir, essays on art, intimacy, love; i'm halfway through this, and it has been lovely. i can't wait to finish it and go back and look at all the parts i highlighted
the end of the end of the earth by jonathan franzen: about the end of times, climate change, how we deal with it, how we can deal with it, also a dash of personal essays, they're all excellent; my favourites include the one on 9/11, 'why birds matter', 'missing', the eponymous one, and 'xing ped'
intimations by zadie smith: six essays, short ones, on living in early pandemic 2020; they feel very warm and comforting because they're full of all the anxieties that marked the beginnings of last year
the anthropocene reviewed by john green: essays on the human planet; very wholesome; a relatively quick read, they're short ones
the book of indian journeys by dom moraes (editor): it's an anthology of writings on traveling in india, i like for the collection of authors it brings together, you should look it up
if you feel like fantasy/urban fantasy/scifi:
the licanius trilogy by james islington: i read this early last year, and i was obsessed; starts as a chosen one story about this boy who has augur abilities, but it becomes so much more; very sleek time-travel/loop situations; also looks at free will, choice, destiny
good omens by neil gaiman, sir terry pratchett: this is one of the funniest and the most wholesome-est books i've read; follows an angel and a demon working together to stop the apocalypse; they both share one brain cell between them, and i love them for that; also check gaiman's coraline (be warned, it is creepy); and pratchett's small gods
the hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy by douglas adams: this is the first part, and i would totally recommend them all; it starts with the earth being demolished to make space for an intergalactic highway, only one human escapes, he hitches a ride on a spaceship nearby; utter chaos of a book (affectionate), also very funny
the immortalists by chloe benjamin: follows four siblings who discover the exact dates of their death, and then takes a look at their lives one by one; has interesting things to say about destiny and choice
an absolutely remarkable thing by hank green: about april, who becomes famous overnight after "discovering" an alien installation in new york; it's science fiction, and a really fun read; about human cooperation (or lack thereof), the internet, and the nature of our communication; also the sequel, a beautifully foolish endeavour, is amazing pandemic reading
more than this by patrick ness: a boy drowns to death and finds himself in what he thinks is obviously hell, but things get complicated as time passes; YA scifi, pretty fast-paced
and a few assorted ones:
the lonely city by olivia laing: has there been a time i haven't recommended this? absolutely not. it's about artists who explored art as a means of negotiating isolation and loneliness; blends memoir and art appreciation; very poetic
the dublin murder squad series by tana french also got me out of a slump this year; they're very addictive crime fiction; six books and i thoroughly enjoyed them all; my favourites are the likeness and broken harbour
a man called ove by fredrik backman: follows an old man who has a very meticulously planned schedule, and who is generally grumpy; you're slowly introduced to his past, and it's just a very wholesome story; great if you want light reading
the uncommon reader by alan bennett: it speculates on what would happen if the queen (of england) made a hobby out of reading; it's a day's read, only 50-odd pages, and it's pure fun
the blue umbrella by ruskin bond: another short one, under 200 pages; about a girl who stumbles across a japanese umbrella, and about how her village receives the exoticism of the umbrella; a very fine story
round ireland with a fridge by tony hawks: it's a travelogue, where hawks takes a trip around the perimeter of ireland with a small fridge after losing a bet; it's absurd and engaging, and wild that this really happened
i hope you find something you like!

Ranking the looks of Rocket Raccoon, Part 4: The Best
#20
Guardians Team-Up (2015), #2 (Stephane Roux, Jay Leisten, Brett Smith)
Tumblr media
I like the shading and the teeth.
#19
Rocket Raccoon (2014), #10 (Jake Parker, Jean-Francois Beaulieu)
Tumblr media
For some reason this style reminds me of Calvin and Hobbes.
#18
Guardians Team-Up (2015), #10 (Mike Norton, Jessica Kholinne)
Tumblr media
I don’t understand why every comic book character has a bunch of random pouches everywhere.
#17
Guardians of the Galaxy Prelude (2014), #2 (Wellinton Alves, Manny Clark, Jay David Ramos)
Tumblr media
He angry.
#16
Civil War II (2016), #5 (David Marquez, Sean Izaakse, Justin Ponsor)
Tumblr media
How does his tail not catch on fire, being so close to that rocket/jetpack/whatever that is?
#15
Guardians Team-Up (2015), #7 (Shawn Crystal, Matthew Wilson)
Tumblr media
Is he naked here? It’s hard to tell.
#14
Infinity Countdown Prime (2018), (Mike Deodato Jr., Frank Martin Jr.)
Tumblr media
He’s sad :(
#13
Guardians of Knowhere (2015), #1 (Mike Deodato Jr., Frank Martin Jr.)
Tumblr media
I had trouble ranking this and #14, and then it turns out they’re by the same artists. I think they’re both worth including though, considering they’re a few years apart (also I was too lazy to renumber the rest of them).
#12
Rocket Raccoon (2016), #3 (Jorge Coelho, Antonio Fabela)
Tumblr media
Never mind #37, this one is my mood at all times.
#11
All-New Guardians of the Galaxy (2017), #12 (Rod Reis)
Tumblr media
It’s hard to find things to say about the good ones other than “It’s good”.
#10
Symbiote Spider-Man: King In Black (2020), #1 (Greg Land, Jay Leisten, Frank D’Armata)
Tumblr media
His ‘80’s outfit is back! I think there’s time travel involved or something?
#9
Rocket Raccoon and Groot (2016), #9 (Michael Walsh, Michael Garland)
Tumblr media
This shows that it is possible to show him head-on and not make his face look flat.
#8
Deadpool: Too Soon? (2016), #1 (Todd Nauck, Reilly Brown, Jim Charalampidis)
Tumblr media
Rocket and Deadpool have met a weirdly high number of times, but then again I think deadpool just kind of shows up everywhere.
#7
Guardians of the Galaxy (2013), #14 (Nick Bradshaw, Jason Masters, Todd Nauck, Walden Wong, Justin Ponsor, Jason Keith)
Tumblr media
If only I had an angry not-a-raccoon to get me out of bed in the morning. Then again Peter doesn’t seem to be that happy about it so maybe it’s for the best.
#6
All-New Wolverine (2016), #22 (Leonard Kirk, Cory Hamscher, Michael Garland, Erick Arciniega)
Tumblr media
It’s interesting to see the continuity of his outfits. There’s the iconic 80’s green bodysuit; the orange jumpsuit from the first movie, which he also wore in the comics around then; there’s this, which he started wearing around 2016; and I won’t spoil it for you but his 2020 outfit is the best.
#5
All-New Guardians of the Galaxy (2017), #9 (Mike Hawthorne, Terry Pallot, Jordie Bellaire)
Tumblr media
Something about this reminds me of Ukiyo-e and I don’t know why.
#4
All-New Guardians of the Galaxy (2017), #1 (Aaron Kuder, Ive Svorcina)
Tumblr media
He kind of looks like a dog but in a good way.
#3
Guardians of the Galaxy (2018), #146 (Marcus To, Ian Herring)
Tumblr media
There aren’t any good pictures of him without the helmet, but he looks good in it.
#2
Rocket (2017), #4 (Adam Gorham, Michael Garland)
Tumblr media
He looks good in a suit.
#1
Guardians of the Galaxy (2020), #1 (Juan Cabal, Frederico Blee)
Tumblr media
Finally, #1 is his look in the ongoing Guardians of the Galaxy comics. If you haven’t, you should check them out. The story is mostly comprehensible (which is the best you can hope for in comics) and the characters and art are really good.
