but tbh … he was ( still Is ) a bad boy. max often got in trouble despite being quite nonchalant and reserved at first glance. more often than not max was sitting in the principal’s office or the family lawyer had bailed him out of jail in santiago for a bar fight . hey, he never starts fights … just finishes them !!

eventually after a stern talking to by the elderly patriach of the isidora family who was approaching his finals years on this earth, max goes to college and receives an education in the science of winemaking and engineering of agronomics, and also some environmental studies. don’t be fooled by his Rich Party Boy facade he’s an ORGANIC FARMER NERD !!!! fully committed on making isidora wines innovative and sustainable 😤

maximilano is a bit of a celebrity across the valaparíso region, but doesn’t let it get to his head ( unlike some of his younger siblings who idek are doing these days ). at the same time u can see him working his butt off under the chilean sun, making sure his property is taken care of. maybe nick parker from the parent trap vibes ?? u know what i mean ??

Mañanaland by Pam Muñoz Ryan

Category: Tejas Star Reading List, 2021-22

Summary: In the fantasy country of Santa Maria, Maximiliano (Max for short) lives a mostly happy life playing fútbol with his friends, although he sometimes wishes his Papá would tell him about his Mamá, who disappeared when he was just a baby. What has also disappeared is his birth certificate, and in order for Max to keep playing fútbol, Papá travels to another city to get one for him. While he's gone, Max discovers a compass and is asked to help take his Papá's place as a Guardian to escort a young girl to the mythical Mañanaland that Max's Buelo has told him so many stories about. Max learns about the dictatorship in the neighboring country of Abismo and hopes that by helping this young girl he may also find his mother along the way.

Justification: This is a high-interest fantasy tale that supports bilingualism, often using Mexican-Spanish phrases during description and dialogue, which is why it made the Tejas Star Reading List. In Texas, it's important to have a bilingual or even multilingual book available for students who are ESL, who are learning Spanish and want to practice, or who are already comfortable with both languages. Representation matters, even in the language an author chooses to write in.

Evaluation:

Music in Language - Since her novel Esperanza Rising rose to fame, Ryan has been known for her lyrical writing. One of the phrases often repeated throughout the story is "Solo mañana sabe."/"Only tomorrow knows the answer." As the story progresses, this phrase takes on an even more powerful meaning. Mañanaland is not just a destination, it's the journey to a better future and neither the readers nor Max knows what it might hold in store.

Figurative Language (Allegory) - The entire book is essentially an allegory for those who help migrants and refugees enter a safe country when the borders are closed to them. It could easily have become didactic, but Ryan carefully toes the line between telling a fantastical story and a lesson about how undocumented immigrants are treated. Because of how it is written, students may relate to one side or another more clearly, or they may feel caught in the middle like many of the other characters inhabiting Santa Maria.

Pacing - While Ryan's writing is undeniably beautiful, at times there are tangents that seem to only contribute beauty rather than plot or character details. I feel like Max's character growth could have been more gradual, and that his arc was rushed. The ending also felt rushed. Perhaps Ryan was running out of time or needed to shorten the book. Either way, the ending was still powerful and had me asking, "Do you believe in happy endings?"

coming up with guy OC names is so hard. I have no sense of men's naming. 90% of guys IRL seemed to be named Matthew or Michael. Or some four-letter name like John or Luke or Paul. And you can't have every character have their name the same length :/

Max was born in San Diego too his parents who had one older brother followed by another then last two twin sisters. It was a busy household since his parents, siblings and grand parents all lived in the same home. It caused his father to be gone a lot since he worked tow jobs and his mother had one too. As he was one the oldest to help care for the younger ones, and help with the grand parents.

The family always got by but never was that well off, but he really had whatever he did need since his parents worked hard for it. But he was mad he wasn’t able to do as much as his friends and started to act out, some stealing and getting into trouble like fights and some slight dealing. His teachers noticed his changed and helped him out as much as they could and got into him drama class that he took too.

But being the kid that was a charity case to others never easy but he let his feeling out acting in school plays and some local productions. He moved himself to LA to try and live in the dream and it took a while for him. Indy movies, ADS on tv among other small projects. A few guest star roles and small parts here and there and he slowly worked his way up. He has yet to land a lead role but he’s still hoping to live the dream. During his time acting he met Summer on set one day and they hit it off starting to hangout as friends and soon more then friends. They started dating for a while and got married.

He was happy with her, had a good time with her and loved her. But he landed one of his bigger movie roles nothing super major but helped get him noticed more. But he was paired with co-star on screen and they hit it off and started going around Summers back. it went on for a while till they got found out and Summer left him and left town.

He stayed with her for a while he was happy, till she became pregnant. He was nervous but excited as he was getting older without any kids. But soon after the baby was born she admitted it wasn’t his she had been cheating on him with her ex. That shocked him and hurt him, he stayed in LA a while drinking a bunch before he tracked down Summer and now is trying his best to find her to tell her, he’s sorry.

Millicent Moreno

Millicent was the granddaughter of Talia, and the daughter of Maximiliano and Zophie Moreno. She was the youngest of three sisters, and was single for a big part of her life, while her other sisters built families and moved out. Millicent stayed with her mother as she aged, and they moved into Talia’s old home on top of the hills of Strangerville.

When her mother eventually passed, Millicent grew depressed. She hardly ever left the house, and no one ever came over to visit. Having grown used to the paparazzis outside for her mother, she even started missing them when they were gone.

One day, there was a knock on the door. Knox Greenburg, a green life advocate, was on the other side. He had a habit of knocking on people’s doors, offering them help around the house for free. He was used to getting rejected, but was happily surprised when Millicent stepped aside and let him in. Both seemed pleasantly surprised to find that they had a lot in common, and got along really well.

Long story short; they fell in love rather quickly. Both marriage and pregnancy came around shortly, and Camille was born. They loved their little daughter with every ounce of their beings, but learned quickly that Camille needed hearing aids. Millicent was told that her body handled pregnancies quite badly, and that another pregnancy could be at great risk for both her and the baby. Since both Millicent and Knox wanted more children, they decided to use a surrogate. Only a few years later, Caesar was born.

Life seemed perfect for a while, but things would soon happen that would test the relationship.

Millicent and Knox had frozen some eggs and some sperm in case they wanted more kids. Without telling Knox, Millicent would get two kids via surrogate, Cecilia and Chloé. Knox, all while loving his kids more than life itself, was quite upset and hurt that this happened without his knowledge. Sure, they had talked about more kids, and both wanted it, but they had agreed to wait. Millicent was starting school, and Knox had a lot to do, juggling work with child care as he took the heaviest load so his wife could study. He would also do household chores.

The kids grew distant to their mother. She was hardly home, and rarely hung out with them. When she did, she would be strict and lay down the law, and that for sure didn’t build any relationships.

Knox held onto the hope that after school, things would be different. But then, Millicent would get so busy focusing on her career and promotions, that it almost got worse.

Eventually, on the day of her final promotion, he handed her the divorce papers. He still loved her dearly, but she was not the woman he had married, and not the mother his kids needed. He said that he’d take the two youngest, while she’d keep Camille and Caesar. He reassured her that they could visit anytime, both ways, and that they could hang out like they would usually. But at that point, Chloé, who was an infant, had been neglected by her mother to the extent that she would cry whenever her mother held her.

Millicent took everything to heart. It was tough to realize how she had behaved, and that the love of her life saw no other way than to leave her, but it had been necessary. They had sleepovers all the time (including the parents), and Millicent would take the kids on vacations, and take days off from work.

At the end of their lives, Knox and Millicent regained some of that love that they had lost, but they never got together, and they never married again.

Still, they share a spot in the family graveyard.

Was a but troubled as teenager but did clean his act up, but came from more lower class family. But his large family was always very happy.

Acting out with him was getting into fights, stealing, ditching school and light dealing. But a teacher saw him struggle and suggested drama class.

He learned to love being up on stage, he loved the spot light and all eyes on him.

He moved to LA after he turned eighteen, going out for anything and everything. Extra work as first, TV adds, and more before he started landing some roles.

He dreamed to land that big role, something that last him for years...that he still working on.

Met and fell for Summer in LA both them trying to live the dream, it was fast and quick but he did love her no matter the age or them both struggling to act.

A few years into them he landed a good tv role and was paired with one of his co stars, they quickly started messing around off screen he cheated on Summer, he didn’t take long for Summer to find out and she left him and down.

He was with his co-star for a while and was happy she became pregnant and after the baby was born she admitted she had been cheating and the baby was not his. Now he’s in New Haven trying to find Summer to fix things.

Maximiliano, my firstborn, turns one tomorrow. He was conceived out of love, ten months + three days after two lost souls found each other in a food bank inside a church, whose cafeteria was used for lunch on Thursday afternoons in my high school days. A year ago, I was under a spell that was so strong I thought I would never live to tell the tale. But, a year later, parenting just snapped me out of it like a twig. This photo is not about a book. It's about the greatest thing I never thought I would be: A mom.

El Matador’s real name is Carlos if we can believe Wikipedia, though that might mean Big Bo’s real name is Bojack and i don’t think i’m ready for that. but if i were to name him i’d give him Maximiliano, or “greatest” because it’s what he’d want and i’m of the opinion that he should be given whatever he wants (also because it vibes as conceited and self-aggrandizing so the shoe boot really fits)

Cool Joe’s Joe Waweru in Nigeria, but he’s Brazilian so i guess we can go with what’s closest to the American Joe/a regional equivalent, José.
