#Repost @thisdateinpiratehistory ・・・ • 8 August • On #thisdateinpiratehistory in 1721, Bartholomew Roberts captures the 26-gun Royal African Company ship Onslow. The Onslow had made an unofficial stop so that it’s captain, William Gee, could indulge himself in private trade. It was riding at anchor when Roberts’ Royal Fortune came upon it, and the majority of it’s crew were ashore. The Onslow surrendered meekly, and the pirates began plundering it of its £9,000 worth of goods, cannon, gunpowder, pewter crockery, textiles, and copper and iron bars. As Roberts surveyed the cargo he realized that the real prize was the Onslow itself. The Royal Fortune had become “leaky and crazy,” a term used to describe an old and decrepit ship. They exchanged it with Captain Gee and began making alterations. They knocked down the bulkheads and removed the quarterdeck, making it sleek and streamlined and easy to move around in times of battle. 17th May 1682, birth of Welsh pirate Bartholomew Roberts, born John Roberts, he raided ships off the Americas and West Africa between 1719 and 1722. One of the most successful pirates of the Golden Age of Piracy, Bartholomew Roberts and his crew seized over 470 prizes in their four year career. He is also known as Black Bart, but this name was never used in his lifetime. Acting as third mate on a slave ship in 1719, the ship was seized by the pirate captain Howell Davis and Roberts was forced reluctantly to join them. Six weeks later Davis was killed, and amazingly the crew voted Roberts as their new captain despite the fact that he still resisted to live as a pirate. Roberts was killed on the 10th February 1722 after being hit in the throat with grapeshot fired from HMS Swallow. The large majority of Robert’s character and appearance appears in Captain Charles Johnson’s 1724, ‘ A General History of the Pyrates’, possibly written by Daniel Defoe, although this remains disputed. Bartholomew Roberts’ entry in the book, is greater than all the other pirates listed, such as Calico Jack Rackham, Blackbeard, Anne Bonny, Charles Vane, Samuel Bellamy, and many others. The work also gives a detailed description of Robert’s as ... ‘a tall black [meaning of a dark complexion] Man, near forty Years of Age ... of good natural Parts, and personal Bravery, tho' he apply'd them to such wicked Purposes, as made them of no Commendation’, The work also describes Robert’s appearance as dressed in a red waistcoat with scarlet breeches, and a flamingo plume of a scarlet colour. He is also according to legend said to have worn a large diamond cross, which had belonged to the King of Portugal. #Repost @thisdateinpiratehistory ・・・ • 3 April • On #thisdateinpiratehistory in 1722, the first six members of Bartholomew Roberts’ crew to be found guilty of piracy were hanged at Cape Coast Castle. Upon being brought back to Cape Coast Castle after their defeat and capture by Capt. Chaloner Ogle, the most obviously guilty and the most obviously innocent were the first to be tried. Starved, emaciated, and dressed in rags, only a small handful retained their swagger. At the end of March the court rattled through sixteen of the Old Standers in one day. Fourteen were found guilty; six were immediately sentenced to hang. The court was eager to remove any ringleaders from organizing a potential uprising. These six, who could be considered the very core of Roberts crew, stood in front of Captain Mungo Herdman as he passed judgement: “It is your aggravation, that ye have been the chiefs and rulers in these licentious and lawless practices.” As was so often the case, these condemned six were led to the gallows at Cape Coast Castle and hanged until they were dead. Their bodies were then taken down and hung in gibbets “on the most eminent hills around this place, very conspicuous to the shipping as it passes.” The trials would continue for three weeks, with a total of seventy-two men sentenced to hang. Of those, twenty had their sentences commuted to seven years’ service in the mines of Cape Coast Castle - an effective, albeit much slower, death sentence. It was the greatest slaughter of pirates ever carried out by the Admiralty.
