help??
where do I find insect pinning supplies. I don’t have any pinning supply stores near me, and I’m very hesitant to order online, especially since so many websites just sell knockoffs of anything, and I really don’t want anything to rust, degrade, or otherwise go wrong. I currently have a bee in my freezer, and I’d really like to get her out soon, but I don’t have any resources for pinning. What websites do you suggest buying from? I will also probably be getting some moths soon (my friends and their uncle raised moths) so I will also probably need a spreading board, where do you recommend I get one of those?

Bug = bottled. Not too bad for the first time. Might not be the best pick for this preserving method but i don't really have any soft-bodied guys atm, so a cute bee-mimicking fly it is! :) Thanks to @bugmuncherr for advice. Sealing with wax was a brilliant idea. I did go a bit overboard, but it looks cooler that way imo <3

Hey!! So I’ve come to tumblr for help with preserving/pinning bugs!! I’m a major taxidermy nerd but this feels very different so I’m not sure where to begin.
I found this dragonfly while cleaning my house and would love to preserve them for photography and display. Just have no idea what to do or wear to begin. Any advice would be amazing!!

Hi there!! What a GORGEOUS dragonfly you found! And big one too! I'm jealous
You've come to the right place though! I've done a good bit of hobby taxidermy in the past and can give you some pointers!
Get yourself some insect pins. You can find these on ebay or amazon I assume. Don't get super long ones, most frames are only about 1-2 inches wide. They're special pins that are thin and sharp. Your choice which ones! (I still have to cut mine down lol)
Find a frame! The term you'll be searching for is going to be 'shadowbox' when looking online. You'll want a fabric backing inside it and enough space between it and the glass to fit your bug. There's special bug frames you can get. I usually go to my local store and get a fabric back crafting frame with a magnetic hinge door.
While you wait to get your pins, your bug is already dry so just keep it away from dust and fracturing. You can clean it with isopropyl on q-tips. Until then! Store in a dry place. (Unless it's a bug that freshly died for you- in that case, off they go into the fridge until they can be pinned.)
You got your pins. Great! Get yourself a container big enough to fit it. Paper towel at the bottom soaked in alcohol/isopropyl. Put another layer between that. Put your bug on top. Put the lid on. This will soften your bug so you can manipulate it. Leave for 24 hours or more.
Now your bug is soft. It won't be nearly as easy as it'd be with a fresh one- so you'll have to be careful with that abdomen. One pin goes through the thorax. That's your main holding pin. Manipulate your bug into place with the rest of the pins.
DO NOT PIN THROUGH THE WINGS. You will want to get a few pieces of cardboard or more styrofoam and stack em under the wings until they can lay flat. Clear piece of plastic (from a box or laminating sheet or something clear) over the wings, and you pin through THAT until it holds the wing tightly in place.
Now just to leave it to dry again! Not in the sun, not over a pure radiator, not anywhere humid. It will take a few weeks. Your bug is dry when you can't move their legs, leave longer for Thiccer bugs. I like to put mine near/atop my geckos heatlamp.
That's pretty much it!
Some bugs need different methods- like millipedes, or stickbugs that need to be gutted and stuffed. But a dragonfly should be good with just drying! Most bugs are.
Here's a picture of my current beetle drying.

Hope that helps!

the paper bug project is done!
i’ve wanted to experiment with faux taxidermy for a while now, so i decided to kick things off with some bugs. i learned a lot, and now that this set is finished & in the gallery i’m already planning more. they’re so much fun to make!
also! i want to mention that these are inspired by one of my favorite artists, beastieandbone (on instagram) who does incredible paper taxidermy art.
(the last 3 pics are by @iridescentjaq thank u honey 💚)

JOY JOY PEACE AND LOVE ON PLANET EARTH!!!
I found this dead bumblebee in the sidewalk and was able to take her to my house and pin her!! She was so recently dead that I was able to manuver her incredibly easily. So excited to frame her when she's dried out!! Hopefully I'll have rehydrated some of my other collected corpses by then (oh god that sounds weird doesent it). There's this one beetle I found that I've been putting off even though I'm super excited about it <':D

Her wings are in perfect condition! So excited to do some research and learn more about her

I finished something! No, for real this time.
I am desperate, DESPERATE I tell you to actually get some projects closed out and space freed up in my sewing room. And my office. And my dining room table. And the dining room floor. It is out of control, I tell you!
I lay the blame at least partially on the very lovely lady who I have been associating with lately who enables all my best/worst inclinations by cheering on all my projects while doing just as many of her own at the same time. In the case of this project it's definitely her fault because she insisted it would be Terribly Romantic to learn how to artfully pose the dead, hollow carapaces of a pair of cicadas together. I am not a Terribly Romantic person but you know what? I'm into it. She's right. Playing with dead things is a great date night activity.
Tumblr media
I spent all summer scanning the ground for dead insects and I was really proud of the pair I found. Look at this big juicy critter.
Tumblr media
What I learned about the process is that you don't really "pin" the insects per se. You rehydrate them so that their little joints can move around, pose them the way you like, and then use the pins to just gently prop up the limbs and the wings in the configuration you want. Once it dries out again, everything stays in place and you just mount it in a box with a dab of glue.
Tumblr media
Behold! My very own bug in his stylish little house. And I now no longer have a pile of dead bugs littering my mantlepiece. Small victories.
