#but HEY MISA KIRA AUs?????
eclecticopposition · 1 year
Note
its your guys so idk if it counts as headcanons but tell me about the au where veto is light yagami and blitz is misa. it's up to you who is L. my first thought was casey but if someone else would fit better then by all means
hey anon you have a bigger brain than the entire sun
(This got long. into the readmore it goes.)
Veto as Light is interesting because Veto definitely likes L more. Is not the type to just start killing people out of nowhere, but would still for sure pick up the death note and be like "I could totally get some CEOs with this." Thinks about it for like a week and then commits.
Has a code. Uses the power sparingly. Starts out very much as an "only when necessary" guy. Cooler head than Light Yagami. To them, this is pure pragmatism. They are a fine instrument.
Catch this guy using it to make this AUs equivalent of Jeff Bezos liquify all his assets, spend it all on climate change funding and police abolitionist groups, make a surprise public statement and dab on stage, and then die instantly.
The very picture of low key.
People lose their minds about this. Some people love it. Some people hate it. Veto is doing the finger steeple in front of the computer watching the internet discourse and going "yes..... all according to keikaku. (translator's note: keikaku means plan)."
Veto also continues posting online like usual and alternates arguing about this and about cartoons. Posts a long argument on why killing billionaires is fine but Kira's a dumbass and should have spent the money on something else.
Who L is here is really really interesting. Because out of the main cast, it probably *would* be Casey, but we don't know which Casey. This one might be more of a Worstcase than canon Casey is. Kind of colder, legitimately more analytical and able to keep their cool, much less in doubt about whether criminals are bad or not. Old enough to have established themself as some sort of prodigy and risen to prominence in law enforcement. Is NOT having some sort of psychosexual duel with Veto. Do not even suggest it.
If it's not Casey, though, then it is absolutely the Witness. Like, come on. She's right there. Is she? No, she's behind a number of proxies that she's lying to you about and a paranoid personality disorder.
The Witness is basically just L already, if L was a legendary whistleblower in the style of Anonymous. Also she's fucking terrifying.
The Witness is L. In canon L used to be around, and she got killed (?) by skeletons. That's just the way it is.
Yeah it's her.
Blitz being Misa is also very interesting, because it means they aren't Ryuk. The dynamic between them and Veto will be pretty different to Light and Misa (if anyone could pull her off, it's probably Nickle). Blitz and Veto absolutely strike up some sort of deal to cover for both of them.
They both already go by fake names of some sort. Blitz because they changed it both when joining and leaving Tesserate's cult, and Veto because they're a bit of an influencer who doesn't want their past dug up (or their ex to find them), so they go by something more in line with their public persona.
Veto asks what Blitz's actual name is. Blitz laughs at them.
Blitz would not have a Death Note, but does know about them. Might have some fucked up Shinigami ability.
Very possible that Tesserate both grants their followers some sick powers and keeps them physically dependent on them. Blitz was trapped there until they saw Veto pick up a new Death Note.
They immediately take the opportunity to get out, switching to being physically dependent on Veto instead.
Veto says they're not really into this fucked up dependency thing. They both know Blitz can't snitch because they need Veto, so if they want to just get like a high five every week or so, that's cool. No forced labor in their house.
Blitz says that is why they don't mind.
Veto is like, so what, you're just gonna help me get away with murder?
Blitz says they certainly seem to need it.
Veto flips them off. So what, they think Veto is like a mildly infuriating video and is just a little bit bad at murder so they want to do it themself?
Blitz says that they're more than happy to let them carry on as they are. They'll go along with what they ask, even. They mostly just want to see what they do.
Murderous Jeeves has joined the party!
Blitz also knows a lot of the other characters from a previous era, including the Witness. A vital source of information and physical/magical protection. Also very good at sharpshooting, of course. You never know when you'll need that.
Tesserate is still doing some sort of thing and wants to hunt Blitz down. Also is trying to hunt down the Witness. This guy is the one with no qualms about just offing everyone in their way. Also has a Death Note.
Mav is a Shinigami and is still the worst.
Casey's actual role in the story is probably a more mundane detective. Like L, but with less information to work with.
This version of Death Note would have a lot more major players and more prominent minor ones. It's a mess.
Casey is at a loss for a lot of things, but has a strong moral code, and is smart enough to put a lot of things together. Legitimately torn about what to do about any of this. Still thinks murder is bad.
Nickle is often seen hanging around Casey! They're the funny little guy. The Maya. A comedy duo doing investigations together. More clever than they seem, but not really one for all the machinations. They don't have the head for it, they say! They just have some ideas sometimes.
Casey absolutely hates magic, and thinks it's absurd. Refuses to acknowledge the supernatural as being proven to be real. Still very good at speculating about it and following logic to make it internally consistent.
Nickle thinks this is very funny and will throw in absurd-but-plausible ideas to trip them up. It's how they talk to each other.
The Witness doesn't show up in person. Casey and Nickle, however, do. At Veto's house. With some questions.
Veto and Nickle still meet at a Tidalform event and do the full rendition of a classic Checkmark/Lockdown confrontation. This is before they both realize that murder investigation brain duels are involved.
Blitz asks if Veto wants them to arrange an accident. Veto is like "nah. I mean, keep it on standby, but I don't really wanna kill these guys. It'll raise suspicion. Plus it's fun to have a challenge" and agrees to let them both into their house.
Most of the murder investigation brain duels are between these four. Casey is the major player here, checking everything for consistency. Nickle is carefree and less informed but scary observant, and will pick up on even tiny discrepancies in people's reactions. They are a very good team.
Veto realizes this immediately. They put on an act of a second, DIY L-figure who is investigating independently to cover their tracks.
Still has many intense conversations in classic death note style.
Blitz is just off to the side bringing people tea. Pleasantly smiling. Also silently scheming.
Casey gets aggravated and gestures a lot, but still thanks Blitz every time they get a cup.
Octave is missing. Nickle hasn't seen them in years.
Octave was actually also doing a Kira thing about five years ago, more clumsily and a lot more aggressively. It went badly enough that they were found out and went on the run. Made a pretty big splash, enough that people remember them as the first Kira, and the public assumes that they're back when Veto starts.
Veto knows the basic details about who Octave is (they were a minor, so it isn't public knowledge, but the forums Veto frequents were one of many places that dug it up anyways). Does know about the first Kira, and once they got one, put together that they must have used a Death Note.
With some digging, they realize that the reason Nickle is allowed to help with this is because they were friends with Octave in the past. Casey might have been involved in it too. Files this away for later and then brings it up to see how much Nickle knows.
It seems like a sore spot, but Nickle doesn't know much. Treats Veto pretty coldly. Insists that Octave isn't really the first Kira. They wouldn't do that.
Casey's opinion of Octave is far lower. They are also cagey about the details, but they are darkly confident that Octave was dangerous, and not up to any good.
Veto presses them and learns that Casey was involved in that investigation. In fact, they were the one who realized it was Octave. That's how they got this position in the first place.
Veto asks them how Nickle took that whole thing. Losing their best friend must have been hard. Were they mad at Casey?
Casey says that it's reasonable to experience intense emotions in that situation. Nickle was erratic for a long while. They don't hold it against them.
"Fucked up to think they were just doing that right under their nose," Veto says. "They didn't notice anything?"
"Nickle didn't have anything to do with it," they snap, immediately.
"Sure, of course," Veto says. "It's just weird that they didn't see it. Like, they're pretty good at picking things up."
Casey looks away a little. "It's hard to admit it when it's someone close to you," they say. "You end up looking for anything else."
Nickle and Veto became friends immediately. Little weirdo attached to their rival. Inviting them over frequently was a handy way to keep an eye on Casey and feed them information to direct their movements. It helps that Nickle is also funny and likes the same cartoon. Veto continued doing their mastermind thing, and Nickle continued being Nickle, but they legitimately did the same fun stuff that they and Nickle usually do.
This was derailed by Nickle cheerfully telling Veto out of nowhere that "You barely even act like a mass murderer!"
ohfuck.png
Veto goes through the many stages of "oh god what the fuck" grief. "oh god oh shit I'm fucked what the fuck" to "I've gotta kill this fucking guy" to "this guy is gonna fucking kill me" to "how the fuck did they figure it out???" to "wait what if they didn't. don't self incriminate this is basic stuff" to "yeah okay this is probably a test be COOL" to "why are they admitting they know to my face??" to "they must have told casey, otherwise they'd never take the risk. what's their insurance" to "oh god this guy is making a play and I don't even know what it is. I am so fucked" to "wait but they didn't just arrest me. what do they want?? are they going to try and blackmail me??" to "oh man this guy is making a PLAY. good for you little man I didn't know you had it in you"
Running through the options as they recover and hit the "Aw, I bet you say that to all the pretty girls."
"Wow, do pretty girls get Death Notes by default? That actually explains a lot."
ohFuck.png
Nickle explains to a very thrown Veto that they haven't told Casey! And if they can be cool about this, they won't. All they want is to make sure that Veto doesn't do anything dumb, like write Casey's name in that notebook or something! Maybe be a little more thoughtful before deciding somebody deserves to die! There's no reason they can't come to some sort of deal here. Everyone wins! What do you say?
Veto doesn't say anything. Just holds a hand out.
Nickle stops. Doesn't seem to know what to so. This caught them off guard. Veto just raises their eyebrows, doesn't say anything, gestures with their chin and makes a "give it here" motion. That makes it click, and Nickle actually looks a little nervous, like they've been caught at something. They start to laugh and speak. Veto just gives them another look. This one is a lot more pointed.
Nickle slowly pulls their phone out of their pocket and hands it over. Veto stops the recording. Deletes it. Quickly checks the most recent calls, emails, and text messages. Finds something that's cued to send in an hour; deletes that. Then tosses it back to Nickle.
"Alright," Veto says. "Let's talk."
They do talk. Veto learns that Nickle was actually involved with Octave's little stint with a Death Note. Knows how they work, knows what to look for. Admits that they agreed to what Octave was doing and helped cover their tracks.
"Aren't you one of those killing is wrong types?" Veto asks.
"Well, yeah," Nickle says.
"So what, you're just fine with letting someone else do it?"
"We didn't just go around killing people," Nickle says. "We talked it over every time. It wasn't a punishment thing, even. I don't think anybody really deserves it."
"You still did it," Veto says.
Nickle shrugs, and doesn't deny it. "We had reasons."
"Sure you did," Veto says. "Does Casey know?"
They just smile, oddly melancholy. "Couldn't tell you if I wanted to! But I do know one thing, and it's that you've got a lot to lose if you tell them."
Octave took the fall for it on purpose and has been missing for several years. Nickle doesn't know where they went. Had to go along with their sudden "betrayal" and act like they didn't know anything about it, or the whole thing would have been for nothing. It was a really tough time.
Nickle is actually the one who received the Death Note. They shared it. Octave took half of it with them, and was the one who used it to kill, but at the end of the day it isn't theirs.
They do not mention this.
Veto and Nickle agree to a truce, at least until they can deal with some of the more dangerous people out there. Tesserate is a threat to everyone, and the Witness is merciless. She's going to take down Tesserate no matter the cost, and she's not going to show mercy to Blitz, Veto, or Octave, either.
Casey thinks she's the good guy in all of this but still has some misgivings about the way she does things. Trusts her, but is starting to hesitate with some of the orders they're being given.
Nickle knows that Octave can't come out of hiding with her around, and while they don't want to kill her over it, they sure are open to helping Veto figure out who she is.
Veto asks what they plan to do about Casey, who is still hunting for anyone involved with Kira. Nickle smiles and reminds Veto that if Casey dies, they're next. Veto smirks and says they would expect nothing less.
The brain duels continue. They're both really into it.
Sometimes they pretend to be having a brain duel and they're actually just quoting Tidalform at each other. Casey hates it.
Octave, when they show up, starts doing their codependent thing with Nickle again. They snap back into having a single agenda and reveal themselves to be a second, more idealistically driven Kira duo. Nickle is thrilled.
Octave states in no uncertain terms that they don't care who dies and that they'd do anything for Nickle. Nickle is taking a break from all that though! They're nonfatal only!
Nickle turns out to have been the actual inspiration behind the first round of killings. They were the one with big dreams about changing the world. They were still unsure about using it when they got the Death Note. Octave was the one who was fully in favor of direct action.
Nickle was hesitant. Octave said that they're the one who knows how the world is supposed to be. They promised they'd love Nickle no matter what they did. They said they could do it together. They knew Nickle was right.
They planned the murders together. Both of them unconsciously let Octave take responsibility for the violence, with Nickle bearing none of the blame. They just kept it working. They just came up with the ideas. They aren't the kind of person who is okay with killing people. They were always the one reasoning in favor of mercy. It's why they made a good team.
Once they left, Nickle was left holding a lot of complicated emotions. They knew Octave was innocent – or just an accomplice – and that they couldn't prove it without condemning themself. They felt guilty about letting this happen, guilty about being the real culprit (although they still don't think of themself as A Murderer. Just because Octave has taken the role of innocence in their mind doesn't mean Nickle then takes on the violence that was done. It's just sort of floating, out there.), guilty about lying to Casey.
They do feel betrayed by Octave going behind their back to take the fall and stuff this way down. The fury in this borders on actual hatred. They blame Octave for leaving them, and it terrifies them.
They are deeply sad and scared of how far this has gone. This was never supposed to happen.
The cut throat mental duels are tense and heart pounding. The life and death nature of it means that if you really beat someone, that's it. They are worried that they are a bad person because they actually enjoy it.
At least Octave will always love them.
Casey is not happy about any of this. They suspect things are going on with Veto, with Nickle, and probably with the Witness too. They don't like Octave and they still don't know if selling them out was right.
They start investigating on their own. Their growing paranoia means they stop talking to anyone about anything, including Nickle.
Nickle tries to reach out and get them to talk. They shouldn't have to do this by themself! Why are they pushing them away?
Casey snaps at them. If they want to know so badly, maybe they should both just tell each other everything.
Nickle, caught, looks away and doesn't answer. They cover it with a nervous laugh, but their discomfort is obvious.
Casey tells them to drop it and walks away.
Tesserate's goons have been coming for various people this whole time. Villain of the week style almost. Everyone gets to look badass kicking their asses.
Vye is around. We don't know what she's doing. She is smarter and more ambitious than Tesserate. Also being weird about it.
Out of all the goons, she's the one who regularly defeats major characters. She's the type of person who could make this be two seasons instead of one.
Killing her is a major turning point in the series, although no one knows it. When you lose this common enemy, you don't lose the things that got you there. You have all the same tools and the same energy, and there's no one to use it on but each other.
Blitz has exactly one poignant moment, and it's sitting with her as she dies.
There is eventually a confrontation between Nickle and Casey. Casey says that they know what is going on (which alarms Nickle very much, who has been trying to work behind their back) and demand both answers and some sort of justification. Nickle tries to calm them down. It doesn't work.
The whole reason Nickle and Casey could work together is that they both wanted to do the right thing. No Killing is very much on that list. Nickle and Casey agreed to hunt down people like Kira! They were good at it! It was one of the reasons people let the suspicions about them slide!
Casey even didn't ask questions about the thing with Octave, even though they knew something was up. They trusted Nickle. It was selfish, and they were guilty about it the whole time, but they didn't want to lose them.
But it's Casey. They can't think one thing and do another for long.
Casey puts their foot down and demands that Nickle either commit to what they agreed to, and to bring in whoever they know is an actual murderer, or let Casey take them into custody. It's the thing they would agree to do, if doing the right thing as they agreed is actually what matters to them.
It will also mean selling out Veto and Blitz, which Casey doesn't know but suspects, and Octave, which Casey knows for sure. They make it clear that if they do, Nickle probably will be punished by the authorities, but Casey will still argue their case.
The alternative, of course, is to just say no. They can run. Octave is still out there. But that will mean Nickle is solidly picking a side.
Nickle is stricken. Casey is emotional but not wavering. Which friend you will lose, likely forever, is a painful thing to have to decide.
Nickle leaves. They don't hurt Casey, but they don't let themself get caught, either. They go back to Octave and cry their eyes out.
Casey tries to stop them. It's possible that they actually succeed. If they do, Octave kicks their ass a little and gets Nickle out before the cops get there. It's a firm statement of where everyone stands.
If Octave kicks their ass, Casey gets a cool scar.
It's about fifty-fifty on the odds that someone kills Casey before the night is out.
It could be many people. Veto could see this confrontation and do it. Blitz is the same thing. Octave could comfort Nickle and then go do it later that night. Tesserate could absolutely do it. Would also try to kill Nickle while they are in the same place, and only Octave would save their life.
Mav is a surprisingly likely candidate. It is probably not the Witness. Nickle is the only one it definitely isn't.
If Tesserate does it, Nickle comes out of it with a cool scar.
If they live, Casey and Nickle split off from each other, and Casey becomes a solo operator from now on. They will become increasingly erratic and focused on the task at hand, trying not to let losing Nickle bother them. Their plans become more extreme and reckless, and their pursuit of answers more intense. They are no longer playing around but are still in over their head.
When they begin actually uncovering the truth behind the situation, and their investigation leads to things not even the people with Death Notes know, the Witness kills them.
Casey dies. The end of the second act. They leave behind little evidence for their own murder, and a massive, very detailed tangle of journal entries and encrypted investigation notes for everything else.
When Casey dies, Nickle's primary motivation changes to finding and killing the one who did it. They have no intention of showing mercy. Not only will they die, but Nickle will make sure they lose everything before they do it.
If Octave is the one who killed them, they don't swear revenge, but it does drive a wedge between them that will never go away.
If Veto is the one who killed them, Nickle does not know for sure and is determined to get proof. Veto, knowing their life is on the line, is determined to hide it. If Blitz did it, Nickle already knows, but won't reveal this until they can kill them.
If Tesserate did it, Nickle swears revenge. A plot is hatched. Will kill them like it is nothing.
If the Witness did it, Nickle swears revenge, and is furious that it was the person Casey trusted. A plot is hatched. She is the most difficult person to bring down and Nickle is determined to make her suffer.
Octave is quietly watching. They don't try to talk them out of it. They just say that they'll make it happen.
Nickle shakes their head. They need to do this one themself.
Octave kisses their knuckles and promises that they'll bring them right to the doorstep.
Meanwhile, Veto's watched this whole thing spiral out of control and has doubled down on their own mastermind thing. No more games. They're in it to win it now. They've gotten into the groove of it, and are making some ruthless calls that are on the same level as Tesserate or the Witness. Light Yagami has arrived and been outclassed.
Blitz is watching them quietly, too.
Veto knows. Blitz is not interested in being chained down to anyone and if Veto goes too far, or gets to be too similar to Tesserate, they'll likely just kill them and take the Death Note for themself. It's something they need to keep an eye on.
Blitz knows that Veto knows that if they can figure out their actual name, they can kill them. Veto knows that if Blitz can figure out for sure if they can live without Veto, they can kill them. Neither of them has explicitly betrayed the other yet, and if they do, there's no going back.
Neither of them do anything. They keep being a weird guy and their butler. They still really only have each other.
Nickle shows up with an unreadable look on their face. They tell Veto that they'll help them. It is not an act of friendship. The undertone of impending betrayal from both parties is very much there.
Veto, now fully filling the role of Light Yagami, agrees. They begin working together to take both Tesserate and the Witness down. It's a beautiful sight. They are both also doing a silent, calculating mind duel about who is going to kill the other once it's over. This one is less exuberant than usual.
It becomes clear that they need to untangle the information Casey left behind. It's a confusing, encrypted mess.
There's a chess game visual. They're doing stuff like smiling and giving each other staplers and then it cuts back to the chess board and they're staring each other down across the table and monologuing about what it all means. Cut back to them saying thank you for the stapler. Cut back to the chess board as one of them puts down their rook.
If Casey hunted down the Witness and then was killed by her, there is a real race against time, because she is also trying to destroy the evidence. And she's very good at it. This is why Casey was killed in the first place.
Casey's growing paranoia is a saving grace. It means that they were also obsessively covering their tracks, following in the footsteps of the person who would kill them. Everything is scattered, hidden and encoded, duplicated who knows how many times. They were trying to make sure that if they were killed, someone could still pick up the investigation.
Casey journaled everything. Half of what they find are personal entries, with little bearing on the case. The only thing that isn't recorded is the thing they never had the chance to write down, which is the final revelation that would eventually kill them.
Nickle knows Casey very well. They and Veto untangle this web together, learning things that Casey never said outright and that people would rather keep hidden. The Witness is much better at this than either of them, but there are some things that only a very old friend would know to check.
Some of the messages were explicitly intended for Nickle. At least one was written in that style, even after they separated. Habits don't go that easily.
The final confrontation draws near. If they can crack this final thing, the person they're after will have no escape. Veto and Nickle are in complete sync as they set up the trap.
It's possible that they won't immediately turn on each other once they kill them. Not likely, though.
They crack it. Casey's mystery is solved.
The trap is armed.
It works. Casey's murderer is not dead yet, but the final piece is put in place. They might as well be. The chess game reaches its final tense moments. They're
Blitz shoots Nickle in the head.
Veto, to their credit, looks genuinely distressed about it.
Of course, this is assuming Octave isn't also on their bullshit, which they absolutely are. Unless they also died previously which is not likely. So Blitz just *tries* to shoot Nickle in the head out of nowhere, and Octave shuts that right down. And then there's a fight to the death.
You thought this was anime? You haven't seen anything yet. Octave and Blitz are going for it.
The fight to the death happens at the same time as another fight to the death, which is just Veto and Nickle huddling behind cover with their Death Notes and trying to figure out the other's true name. Nickle, after all, was the one who gave all three of the trio their nicknames.
Nickle is trying to figure out Blitz's to end the fight, Blitz is trying to figure out Octave's for the same reason, and Veto is trying to figure out everyone's because they are pretty sure they're done for no matter who wins.
We have no idea who gets who. It could go a lot of ways. Maybe they all die and it's terrible. It's Death Note.
We also don't know what Vye has been up to this whole time, but she's *asbolutely* on some bullshit. You know the psychosexual brain duels? She's the one doing them. She's doing a weird thing with Blitz *and* Veto *and* Octave *and* the Witness and she's also waiting for her chance to kill Tesserate. Nickle hates her. She makes overtures of bullshit towards Casey, who does not reciprocate and hates this whole thing.
She doesn't have a Death Note, but she does figure out Blitz's real name, which is massive leverage. Thinks she's hot shit. Is correct, to be fair.
Hubble is also around. Hates Tesserate, hates Blitz, likes Octave and won't admit it, and deeply respects the Witness. The Witness sees them as a valuable ally and would absolutely still kill them if necessary. Hubble knows this and approves of this attitude.
Knight has a very sad subplot where he's the only guy the Witness is willing to confide in. He's her man on the outside. The Witness is deeply suspicious of him because of this. She goes back and forth on trusting him and eventually sends him to his death, convinced he'll reveal his betrayal. He dies having been loyal the whole time. She dies soon after.
TL;DR:
Veto is Light. Blitz is kind of like Misa.
The Witness is L.
Casey is kind of also L, narratively speaking. They're an investigator and a main rival but don't have the same "two steps ahead" thing that L has happening.
Nickle is like if L had a Maya.
Actually Casey is just like if regular fucking Miles Edgeworth got into Death Note and Nickle is like if Kay went with him. This is the Investigations games to them.
Octave tried some Kira shit with Nickle years in the past. When it went bad, they took the fall for it, and Nickle was left behind. Casey was the one who told the authorities that Octave was behind the murders and the one who insisted that Nickle knew nothing about it.
It's uncommon knowledge that Octave was the first Kira. No one knows that Nickle is the original recipient of the Death Note.
Tesserate is running some sort of Shinigami cult. Blitz ditched it. Anyone in the cult can be given sickass Shinigami abilities, but is physically dependent on Tesserate to live. When Veto got the Death Note, Blitz ran and switched to being dependent on Veto to live instead.
The factions here are nuts. People are backstabbing each other and teaming up. The Witness, Veto and Tesserate are in some weird three way duel. Blitz works for Veto, used to work for Tesserate, and now has to deal with a jealous ex. Casey works for the Witness (kind of) and Nickle works for Casey. Nickle also teams up with Veto behind Casey's back and has been on Octave's team the whole time. Octave's team is actually just Nickle's team and Casey is NOT on that team.
Summing up the people with Death Notes: Veto, Tesserate, Octave/Nickle. Blitz and other cult members don't have one but do have weird Shinigami powers.
Octave knows about Death Notes and took Nickle's with them when they fled. They may or may not also have a Shinigami power.
The Witness doesn't know about Death Notes, but has enough information to know that something like them is out there. Her guesses are not always correct, but they are always dangerously brilliant.
Casey doesn't know about Death Notes, but is familiar with the rules of them. They solved the first Kira case and knew something unnatural was behind it. They just assumed Octave was haunted.
Mav is the actual worst.

tell me about ur new funky fresh au I need to know more details
hey! ok so basically, I just really wanted to see Light be like an evil fashionista fairy godmother to Misa. lemme explain--
in this AU, Misa is a student who gets bored in class (mainly because of ADHD, not because she's a supergenius) and finds Ryuk's notebook. she's not scared of him or his appearance at all and winds up making a pact with the shinigami, because she's interesting and charming enough to entertain him. so technically, she's the first Kira.
how does Light factor into all this? simple: in this AU, when the alleyway scuffle takes place, Gelus's death note falls into the human world. Light, hearing the commotion and a young woman's screams, runs outside to intervene, but all he finds are a dead body and a black notebook. later that night, Rem shows up to collect it, scaring the shit out of Light with her spooky shinigami appearance and stern manner. they only wind up striking a deal because Rem gives him a one month deadline to a) help her find Misa, and b) prove he deserves to have this kind of power.
model!Light would definitely have gotten a taste of the real world outside his blissful little bubble by now, so he'd be both more cautious (making fewer of the murders heart attacks so they can't be traced to one source as easily) and more vicious (mainly going after creeps and stalkers he's witnessed do disgusting, illegal bullshit firsthand).
he'd also be a little bit sluttier and more openly flirtatious with L, given the fact that the skill set he's learned as a model teaches him about the importance of body language.
this entire AU was born when I was joking with a friend about how if Light and Misa swapped roles, Light would see Misa's absolute mess of a murder spree and go "oh honey, no. let me show you how it's really done."
,, also because I want nothing more than to inspire as much content of Light being the femme fatale to L's noir detective as possible.

What I'm gonna call my "Blackout AU," for namimatsu. Ideas copied from a conversation I had with a friend to discuss ideas.
I did finally have an idea for how namimatsu could work right after meeting. Instead of the Yotsuba Group deciding to kill him, Namikawa and a couple other group members decide it would be too risky to kill him, because it would be too easily traced back to them. Namikawa gets the bright idea to get Matsuda blackout drunk instead, so he forgets anything he may have heard. L catches on that they don't plan on killing Matsuda, and decides the best course of action would be for Matsuda to go along with it. (The hangover afterwards will be punishment for acting on his own in L's mind)
And it's not in a skeevy way either. I imagine Matsuda is trying to not get drunk, but he has the unfortunate habit of wanting to hide his face whenever he gets embarrassed, and when you have a red cup in your hand one way to hide is by taking a drink. Namikawa notices and basically decides to just shamelessly flirt while he talks with Matsuda to keep an eye on him. Matsuda takes a bathroom break to go call L and tell him that Yotsuba really is doing the Kira killings, and also what Namikawa is doing, and L realizes that if one of them is going to all the trouble of getting him drunk, they don't intend to kill him. So he tells Matsuda what's probably happening and to just go with it, since he already told the others what they needed to know. So then the night continues on, Matsuda getting very drunk, but manages not to spill any secrets. Due to the black out plan being Namikawa's idea, he's responsible for making sure it worked and that Matsuda really won't remember anything in the morning... so long story short Matsuda sleeps in Namikawa's guest bedroom... and Namikawa leaves him be except to make sure he doesn't throw up and choke up on his own vomit in his sleep or something. And you know, drunk Matsuda is probably a cutie that does drunk girl things and is also crying and also thanks Namikawa (for saving his life but he is aware enough to not let Namikawa know he knows that's what happened.)
Then in the morning he drives Matsuda to the studio where Matsuda pretending to be Misa's manager supposedly works, asking him questions to see how much he remembers. Later when it is revealed to him that L is onto them he realizes that his plan didn't work. And also when L calls back later he's just, "hey that one guy that we caught eavesdropping, can I have his number?" Because he got a crush unexpectedly
He saved them the trouble of faking Matsuda's death. He deserves a date lol. Doesn't get the number for security reasons. But L also is, "apparently Matsuda has seduced him... could be useful."
(My friend's response "his puppy demeanor works in his favor.")
The two go on dates while L and Light work on catching Yotsuba Kira. Which is literally all I wanted and was having trouble figuring out how to set up. (Say, "thanks, alcohol.")
Also, you know on future dates Namikawa stays away from alcohol, since their first encounter is him getting Matsuda very very drunk. Kind of sus, but he'll redeem himself as a gentleman.

Hi !! I saw that you gave fic recommandations in October do you have other ones that are good? Lawlight or others?
I’m quarantined in Spain and it’s beginning to be longgggg
Yes, I have!
Fanfiction Rec List Part 2
(all lawlight again)
After October, I’ve been very horny, it seems. Really, nearly all of my recs are mature or explicit.
⚫ means multichaptered
⚫ stories about stars (relight) (UNFINISHED) by anonymous on ao3
Rating: Mature
Soulmates in college AU mmm. Finally read it! A fandom classic as far as I know, and for a reason! The text style was quite unusual for me, but soon I understood that it worth a try. Really, try it.
⚪ Two Wills by Mintulip on ao3
Rating: Mature
So so goood, can’t belive I haven’t found it earlier.Light’s thinking about what could be, read it right now!!
⚪ Untethered by butchrem (Harlecat) on ao3
Rating: Mature
Yotsuba arc. Very good characterization, I loved it so much. After some hesitation, L followes Light into the shower.
⚪ Trading Blows by gayraito (Mercurial_Magic) on ao3
Rating: Explicit
Trans!Light, Yotsuba arc. Ah that was so good, good characterization + good smut + Light and L talking a lot, I love when they do it in pwps, ok?
⚪ Change OR the one where L and Light get married by  avoidfilledwithcelluloid on ao3
Rating: Explicit
Trans!Light, trans!L. Ahhh I still haven’t read the whole thing but hey, it’s fanfic about Light and L’s wedding and werry well written for sure, so read it!
⚪ Golden Boy by g g cummings (Katarable) on ao3
Rating: Explicit
Yotsuba arc timeline. Very short one, so, really, give it a read. Oh, and Light has a praise kink!
⚪ God Be Praised by catpyramid  on ao3
Rating: Mature
Yotsuba arc, Light has a praise kink once again, and L uses it. Oh, and it has shower sex.
⚪ How L Increases His Thinking Power By More Than 40% by  WizardPartyForever on ao3
Rating: Explicit
L and Light discuss a case while fucking (and it helps to solve it).
⚪ All In Due Time by WizardPartyForever on ao3
Rating: Explicit
Yotsuba arc. Time to time at the middle of night L annoys Light with his manlyman problem, and this time Light punishes him. So, Light forces L to touch himself and then doesn’t let him come. I must say, this author writes some good smut, so check their profile.
⚫ Triangular Theory of Love  by Devilinthebox (princegrisejoie) on ao3
Rating: Mature
Beware! professor/student smut. It was pretty hot ok
⚫ A Cure For Love by halfpromise on fanfiction.net
Rating: Mature
Good plot, good humor, good lawlight, in a word, Halfpromise. It’s one of these ‘Light and L fall in love during Yotsuba arc’, but there’s also a terrorist organization what steals the death note, so yeah, the investigation continues.
⚪ Casual Affair by cantdoausername on ao3 (one chaptered but pretty long)
Rating: Explicit
Other pairings: Light/Misa, Rem/Misa, Light/Takada
Light is heteronormative gay-gay mess, nothing new. Light marries two times and cheats on his wives with L, lawlight here is so good and sweet (apart from Light being cheating bastard). Well written, and the author gave Misa-Misa justice, I love when authors do that.
⚫ Kira-Kira by GhostOfTasslehoff, ZombieJesus on ao3
Rating: Explicit
Light is a private dancer named Kira-Kira (and he IS Kira, it’s an AU but with death note),and L gets him on his birthday. Light doesn’t go further than dancing with his clients, but with this one... Well, it’s a very-very hot smut. Also fluffy. I mean, what else a girl like me need?
⚪ Almost Oblivion by Serria on ao3
Rating: Mature
Yotsuba arc. Unfortunately, I remember only that it’s very good and very angsty, definetely worth to read. There’s that one thing that I really love to see in Yotsuba!Light, his hesitancy and discomposure. Ah, and L being a dick.
⚪ subsumed, piece by piece by shirohyasha on ao3
Rating: Mature
“Yagami’s son is still pretty. He is pretty even on camera when he thinks he is alone, where most people would allow themselves to relax, allow themselves to slip. Light is still pretty”. I copied the summary because it’s beautiful. Ok, this one follows dn plot from L’s perspective. The writing is amazing, the angst is heartbreaking.
⚪ Morality is Overrated by MinervaEvenstar on ao3
Rating: Mature
Yotsuba arc, the tags give a good description: ‘Light is a flirt’, ‘L has a HARD time resisting the urge to tap that’. Short, good and pretty funny. L really tries to be “decent”.
⚪ Distraction (Beautiful, Dirty, Rich) by GhostOfTasslehoff  on ao3
Rating: Mature
Yotsuba arc. Fluffy post sex conversation, “L isn't used to being playful. He might need some work at it”.
⚪ russias greatest love machine by ruruka on ao3
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Light and L are playing just dance 2 also they’re drunk. So yes, this thing is funny haha.
ONGOINGS
There’re some fics to what I’m subscribed but didn’t read or read very roughly, they seem to be good and interesting, so I’ll share them here too.
⚫ After School Enigma by LA_Elias on ao3
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
L is handed a case involving a string of murdered teens. Light Yagami is his number one suspect...looks like L will need to go undercover as a High school student. Meanwhile, an innocent Light Yagami does have a secret, but not one as morbid as L believes.
⚫ Catch Perfect by Resilicns, ZombieJesus on ao3
Rating: Explicit
Light’s desk catches on fire during the placement of L’s illegal surveillance cameras in the Yagami household, burning up the Death Note early on. Light forgets everything, the killings suddenly stop, and Kira fades away from the public consciousness but never from L’s. Six years later, Ryuk returns to Earth with a new Death Note for Light, now an agent in INTERPOL, ready for Round 2. L’s ready too.
⚫ Passengers by Pyreneese on ao3
Rating: Explicit
It comes in the middle of the night, on the eve of L's death. Both L and Light find themselves on a train right out of science fiction, handcuffed and totally unprepared.
I love the concet so much, and it reminds me of that Mob Psycho special episode khkh
⚫ Quid Pro Quo by Sychronergy on ao3
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Other pairings: BB/Light, BB/L
Japan sends their most promising investigator to dissect the brilliant mind of Beyond Birthday. Every day, for one month, they will speak for one hour.
⚫ Renewal by butchrem (Harlecat), Harlecat on ao3
Rating: Mature
Things go a little differently and, though he gets the Death Note back, Light is unable to kill L and is placed under house arrest. Nearly a year later, criminals start dying, and the two are pushed back together as the case is reopened; L needs to keep his primary suspect under surveillance, and the first Kira needs to find his would-be usurper.
Collaboration is made difficult by the fact that they were hooking up during the Yotsuba arc, and despite being geniuses, neither seem to have grasped proper communication.
⚫ Underground by TranquilBloom on ao3
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
When a nuclear bomb strikes the Kanto Region of Japan, most of the remaining population is forced to remain indoors in underground bunkers for an indiscernible amount of time. How will the stubborn, proud detective, and his main suspect for the greatest serial murder case he’s ever taken on cope?
Hhhhhh yes please, post-apocalyptic AUs make my life, but lawlight post-apocalyptic AU....

Light and BB are two ghosts sharing the same haunted space.
college au w lawlight, rem/misa, and matt/mello/near and ryuk hanging out (shinigami as humans)
near, mello, and matt all being disgustingly in love with one another.
afab non-binary L or near(specifically w/ long hair)1. lawlight canon divergence where, in the helicopter, L snatches the notebook back before light has the chance to write higuchi’s name.
fun and sweet found family w the wammy’s kids (including beyond and a) + light.
au where mello his death during the kira case and is finally coming back to near. hurt/comfort.
Young Mello and Matt hugging each other
Roger Ruvie and Quillsh Wammy examining a frog together
Roger playing the piano(or violin)
Matt, but he is young and wears round glasses, like Harry Potter style glasses.
Roger Ruvie visits Quillsh Wammy in a hospital after the latter nearly dies(Something to do with some kind of case maybe? Or with his background in espionage? Assassination attempt?) and basically says "Hey dumbass I love you very much, don't you dare put your life in danger again"

This is how Misa and Takada can ditch Light

Instead of a death note, Ryuk decides to drop the shinigami deal onto someone withought asking
Resilicns
1. Young or post-one-shot Near (Long hair Near) knocking over a lego/toy brick structure with a toy airplane / 2. Near braiding their long hair or their hair already in braids (whatever is easier for the artist) / 3. Near hugging a plushie of Mello1. Near reflecting on their relationship with Wammy's and L's reputation / 2. Light's monologue/breakdown but from Near's perspective / 3. Moon River (Light/Near) where Light was a Wammy's kid, some drabble where a fight between them ends in a cute, romantic interaction.
lightsturtleneck
1) Lawlight fluff, 2) Near making a giant lego sculpture, 3) Misa studying lines for a movie 1) Lawlight hurt/comfort, 2) Mello/Matt live AU, 3) Any scene from DN that isn’t from Matsudas POV from Matsudas POV
fandom-fae
1) misa standing in front of a burning house (either alone or with mello and/or beyond birthday) after committing arson
2) misa and fem!light and/or fem!L on a date/chilling in a café
3) misa falling off a building (maybe the one she jumped off at the end of the anime), viewed through the shinigami eyes1) an au in which misa somehow knew the wammy’s kids (including L, beyond birthday & a) before the kira-case and how that would affect the investigation (and how that would change that scene at the college when misa & L first met)
2) a college au where misa, fem!L & fem!light all live in a dorm together, the story would take place during the first week of them living there & getting to know each other and so on
3) an isekai au where light is the one who gets sent into a fantasy world & there he meets misa & L and they go on some adventure together! maybe to save the world, maybe just to have fun & maybe to find a way to help light get back home (ur choice!!)
4) linda lives in LA & has a rly successful art studio. three years after the kira case, on the death anniversary of mello & matt, she gets contacted by near & he tells her that he needs her help for a new case. linda had never really wanted to be a detective, but who wouldn’t help an old friend? especially since she hadn’t seen him in so long..
5) an au in which misa is the first kira, and light (maybe fem!light (ur choice!)) is in love/obsessed with her. maybe the story could focus on L’s reaction to finding out that kira is most likely a girl (since he’d previously assumed that kira was a guy).
jam-knife
1. L and Light all tangled in the chain (you can choose whether you want it to be funny, shippy, edgy or a combination of the above xD) / 2. A close-up of Beyond's face in which you can see letters and numbers floating in the reflection of his eyes. You can make it gory if you're comfy with that but it's not necessary / 3. Some angsty Lawlight coupled with lyrics from a song of your choosing1. High School AU Halloween costume party? Is that too much? xD You can choose which characters hook up (if any do) / 2. Any scene from the main series, but narrated from Ryuk's perspective / 3. Light and B join forces to bring L down. How does that work out? Your choice to make it Blight or keep it platonic
izaori
1.) Light and Mello sharing or failing to share a milkshake / 2.) Near in a magical girl outfit like ojamajo doremi or something like that! / 3.) Misa Misa but she looks like a total dweeb. Like it’s nerd day and she’s ready for it1.) Light and Mello on a fake date because Mello was pulling some stunt and it took a wrong turn / 2.) Story of how Soichiro and Sachiko first met!! :) Doesn’t have to be romantic, just thought it would be cute for Sachiko to tell Sayu about it or something. / 3.) Ryuk and Rem shinigami shenanigans. Maybe expanding on Rems growing interest in Misa/humans, or Ryuks antics getting around shinigami laws without actually breaking them
beyondplusultra.tumblr.com
1. mello with even longer hair, braided in some cool style.  /  2. matt, mello, & near but they're posing like charlie's angels  /  3. biker chick misa amane1. a mello x near reunion fic post-kira. Light as a Wammy student (bonus points if he interacts with Near) / 2. Mello kidnaps Light instead of Sayu / 3. Near is a superhero, Light is a supervillain, they get set up on a blind double date and have to roll with it to protect their secret identities
jeevas-exe
1. A polaroid of Matt and Mello having fun, being kids 2. 80s fashion spk 3. mello and matt, moments before they depart on their separate missions in canon 1. an 1800s au, where L, a detective, is trying to figure out why the people of london are dropping like flies. 2. lidner and takada, but one of them borrows a book from the library and doesn’t return it so they have to find each other au 3. a small town au, where matt meets a stranger (mello) who he doesn't recognize.

Post-canon Light (and any other characters you want to add), from the afterlife, watch Near and live-react to Near's daily life in the living world / 2. Light's perspective and reaction to having another man confess feelings for him (can be any other man character, an OC, or genderbent Misa idc) / 3. Fluffy moments between Matsuda and the other investigators during the Yotsuba Arc, with a focus on Matsuda/L interaction if possible
Dillyfirestarter
1) Those Who Stand 2)Make Obha cry sexist tears: turn one of the competent men into a competent woman 3)L/Misa cuteness 4)if we want to something more specific: Misa has made a healthy dessert for herself, but L is allowed a forkful.1)Let’s be mean to sexist Light: how does he react to L being female/female presenting during their first encounter? 2) Oh no, oneshot Near has a lego tangled in his very long hair. SPK caring/hairbrushing time 3)L/Misa: she decides to help Light by coming on to L, L knows what she’s doing but goes along for the ride 4)L/Misa: L tells Misa she can help Light by being nicer to him, Misa discovers that having someone respond positively to her, even weird Ryuzaki, is filling a hole Light’s coldness has left

Light’s mind-shelter, the place in his head he retreats to when the pressure of being Kira becomes too much and he starts to doubt his own actions (extremely early in the manga or post L’s death) /
Your take on A (please not as a cishet man, bonus points if they're not white) /
L and Light with religious imagery (Christianity would be an obvious choice but I'll let you pick any other myth you'd want to draw !) /
Matt alone at Wammy's house, after Mello and Near have left, feeling very lonely and missing them
L wins AU, where Light never recovers his memories, but Misa did (following canon up to that point). explore how L, knowing that Light is Kira but being unable to prove it without making Light a criminal, deals with the whole “Light is Kira but he genuinely doesn’t remember it” situation (lawlight if possible, but if not it's fine too !) /
The origin of the “Dear Mello” photograph, from either Near or Mello's pov, or maybe set after the end of the manga when Near finds himself all alone /
Your take on a soulmate AU (ideas could be: "red string of fate", shinigami eyes related, the name of the person appears on your body... lawlight or nearmellomatt would be my preferred ships but I'm open to other pairings !) /
Mello character study, focusing on anger or inferiority complex, extra mega bonus points if Mello isn't cishet + if you add Christian imagery or Catholic guilt

pinkmalus
Beyond Birthday at home or shopping/
Misa with their bird (when they move in together, they got a bird. Hey, hey you! Yeah, you! You like Death Note? Hm? What about plot-heavy fanfics? A mystery that unravels alongside god-tier character interactions? All the Wammy’s kids on the Kira case? An AU where Light and Misa went to Wammy’s?
Have I got a fic for you...
Introducing Top Five by KeirMoonrock, a brand-spanking new Death Note fanfic by the same person who wrote a Beatles fanfic longer than Moby Dick (A Dove in the Rosebox, highly recommend)! How do I know Top Five is so good, you might ask? Well, I happen to be the beta reader, and oh boy, is this shit good as hell. Y’all are going to fricking die. I know I did. Remember, KeirMoonrock seems friendly, but they’ll rip out your soul! (In a fanfic writer kind of way, of course.)
You like ships? Great! This shit’s gonna have some great Matt/Mello moments! Also some great Light/Misa (genuine this time because Light isn’t Kira). And who could forget that sweet, sweet, One-sided Rem/Misa. Don’t like ships? Also great! It’s more plot heavy than anything else?

Hey remember a few months ago I mentioned a death note emo bands au? That @metalkingshit inspired in me? Well, here it is!
L and the wammy boys are in an emo/ punk band as u would except
Light however is in a J-pop GRP called the Kira's (original ik) with misa and Takada and a few more ppl
Mikami is perhaps their manager
Ryuk and Rem are bodyguards
Light and L meet at some event
And L makes a snide comment abt how J-pop grps can't do punk music
And Light, being the competitive piece of shit he is, takes this as an direct attack
And bam! Suddenly the kiras are a punk band because Light said so
This obviously develops into an all out rivalry
The media has a  day with this
Their labels have them go on tour together because that's fuel the drama and bring more ppl
L and Light ended fucking/dating during said tour
But the media doesn't know ofc
So there's all sorts of wild theories going around
Like one says "L did a satanic ritual to keep his sanity on tour"
Another one is "Light is an immortal vampire who wants to drink L's blood"
Matt, mello near and Linda are there somewhere

Note
So I read the latest chapter of your BEAUTIFUL Death Note AU. Was the extremely protective Shinigami implying that there are 4 Death Notes users? Also before I forget is Misa the 2nd Kira?
Hey!
Thank you so much I’m glad you liked the new chapter!  The protective Shinigami was Rem (Ryuk referred to her as that as no one knows her name yet) and yep that was Misa, she’s still the 2nd Kira (She was just wearing the same disguise as in the original).
There are only 3 death notes in the wild, Light &co’s , Misa’s and Kira’s.
Thank you again!

hey
Hey! To be honest most of the fanfic I read is pretty shippy, but yes I can recommend a few:
NON-SHIPPY DEATH NOTE FIC RECCS:
Tasteless Apples by Fanfiction_Lurker_1 [Rated T | one-shot, 6060 words]: “Post-Canon.After Light’s death, Ryuk tries to find a human as entertaining as him. It doesn’t go as well as he had hoped. Or: Ryuk appreciates what he had only after losing it.”
(this one got me in the feels and gave me a better appreciation for Light)
This is How I Disappear by TzviaAriella [Rated T | 7 chapters, 24641 words]: “After an international tribunal condemns nineteen-year-old Light Yagami to death, the Kira Task Force must come to terms with the fallout of the case–and with Light’s surprising last request.”
(AU in which L wins, and Light is condemned to public execution. not for the faint of heart, but extremely well done heavy angst. loved the bits with the father figures and the task force especially)
Love is Blind by TzviaAriella [Rated T | one-shot, 6580 words]: “The night before her wedding, Sayu Yagami visits Tokyo Detention House to dance with her brother.”
(I haven’t actually read this one yet, but @translightyagami recommended it as good, softer Yagami sibling angst, meant as a bit of a fix-it to This is How I Disappear)
Writing by Twyd [Rated G | one-shot, 1778 words]: “How Mello came to write the BB murders novel.”
(Twyd is hands-down one of the best writers in the fandom, and my personal favourite. a little peek at the behind the scenes of Mello’s writing process; Wammy’s House fic)
Presents by Twyd [Rated G | one-shot, 2022 words]: “When Mello hears of L’s death, he goes back to bed.”
(bittersweet lil Wammy’s fic, focused on Mello and Near)
sodapop at the edge of the world by youremyqueen [Rated T | one-shot, 1605 words]: “Three murders and a suicide, and coffee enough for all four.”
(an odd, sliiiightly shippy little afterlife drabble featuring Misa, B, L, and Light meeting up at a diner. most of this writer’s works are shippy and explicit but she’s also one of the best writers in the fandom and definitely worth checking out)
The Amused Musings of a Smiling God by Nilahxapiel [Rated G | one-shot, 1017 words]: “Years later, Ryuk stews on the notion that Light Yagami maybe hadn’t been a sociopath at all.”
(similar theme to the first fic listed here, from another one of the fandom’s best)

purge au
Light didn’t understand the purge. He tried to, but as hard as he worked, he couldn’t understand how humanity could be so depraved as to actually take advantage of a whole night where all crime is legal. He imagined the sort of murder and carnage that would come of a night like the purge, and immediately worked to barricade himself into his home.
He wrote Misa a beautiful little note that he had to admit he was quite proud of. It didn’t matter of crime was legal, criminals were still criminals, and with Misa’s eyes, he knew it would be a great night for Kira.
It was only a matter of time before no one would ever need a night like that again. And hey, if he took advantage of the purge to have a night full of fun internet crime, who could really blame him?

hey there, i was wondering if you've ever given thought to the hogwarts houses of some of the death note characters? I see a lot of concepts with L as a ravenclaw, but its occurred to me that a lot of his behaviour is more slytherin-y. I feel like a lot of the characters are slytherins haha~
L is Slytherin, I agree 100%. I haven’t even read all of HP, but this is still one of my firmest L opinions, haha. People saying he’s Ravenclaw make me suspicious :/ ….okay, no, I’m exaggerating.
But I think L is just way more motivated by personal gain than knowledge, and he does have his way to manipulate the set systems in his favour, so for me he’s a very very clear-cut Slytherin there.
I made a post about Hogwarts house headcanons a while back, but please ignore the paragraph about Mikami, I am still entirely unsure what to make of him. I have considered all houses like a million times. Currently I can exclude Hufflepuff, but out of the other three? I don’t know. I just don’t know.
Which puts me at….
Gryffindor: Light, Sayu, Soichiro, Takada, Matsuda, AizawaRavenclaw: Near, Naomi, Watari, Wedy, Kida, B, IdeHufflepuff: Rester, Gevanni, Matt, Mogi, Raye, ShimuraSlytherin: L, Misa, Mello, Lidner, Aiber, Namikawa, Higuchi
… and everyone else, I am not sure about. I also italicized people I am uncertain about and whom I could still see in other houses. Like Takada could also be Ravenclaw, in my opinion.
I really do enjoy the subversion of house and morals that a DN Hogwarts AU can offer. Light being Gryffindor is something I am also very certain of and I enjoy that his Gryff personality can still birth Kira, because the way you really use your attributes is what matters.

Hear, Heart, the Beat of Goodnight
‘Here’s hope that tomorrow you’ll realise coffee-making is a human art. Someone who just relies on a cheap, lifeless machine cannot become a real coffee master.’
‘Mind how you talk about My Wammy’s invention. He made a name with his coffee in London long before your father was born. I’ve been learning from the best since the age of ten.’
*
No one could explain why the two cafés at the twelve-level Heartbeat shopping mall were both located on the same floor with less than five metres distance between them. Nor did anyone know why there had to be two open cafés selling coffees and muffins when there was not even a proper restaurant in the shopping complex.
The arrangement simply did not sound reasonable business-wise, but it must be said that the owners of Kira Kira Café and Wammy’s Coffee Corner were very kind people and had always wished the other café the best form of peace.
‘Rest in peace’.
Their wishes gained a new fervour when Investigation, the town’s best-selling newspaper, published the following article:
EXCLUSIVE:
Heartbeat revamp post-Yotsuba purchase
Add bistro, cut café
Kira Kira Café and Wammy’s Coffee Corner have long been the only choices for hungry shoppers at the labyrinth that is Heartbeat. The lack of diversity has been the complaint of many. NOT ANYMORE! Your faithful Investigators, Shuichi Aizawa and Kanzo Mogi, are able to confirm the upcoming addition of a gourmet restaurant in the town’s largest shopping mall. Yotsuba Corporation, the new owner of Heartbeat, has plans to improve…
… ‘We don’t want two similar cafés. One is perfectly enough and the other will be replaced by Yotsuba Gourmet, which will provide more seats and a larger variety of food choices with increased space and investment.’ Arayoshi Hatori, Yotsuba’s Vice President of Marketing, claimed the land owner will decide which café needs to say goodbye in the next month. ‘Quality and popularity are essential criteria for consideration when we make plans for any premises under Yotsuba’s wing.’
Who will stay and who will fade? Our fellow Investigators will be checking on the ‘quality’ and ‘popularity’ of Kira Kira Café and Wammy’s Coffee Corner in this upcoming month. The battle is on. Stay tuned to see who will survive!
‘Worthless paper. As if they actually had any influence on Yotsuba’s decision.’ At Kira Kira Café, Teru Mikami closed his issue of Investigation muttered contemptuously.
‘Light, what should we do?’ Misa Amane asked.
With hearts in their eyes, she and Kiyomi Takada (the newest of the four full-time workers) watched Light Yagami, the handsome owner of Kira Kira Café in his late twenties, rest his chin on the back of one hand while contemplating an answer. ‘A newspaper may not influence Yotsuba directly, but it can influence the public, and consumers’ opinion may affect our business and shape Yotsuba’s opinion.’ Light reasoned. ‘I wonder how Investigation is planning to do this ‘checking’. Anyhow, we have to…’
‘A wise business decision. I’ve always thought there’s no need for two coffee shops so close to each other.’ On the other side of Heartbeat 3/F, Nate River of Wammy’s Coffee Corner offered his very sensible comment regarding the Yotsuba Corporation’s business plan.
‘And that’s all you have to say? That it’s good we’re facing a survival crisis right now?’
Nate took a little time to play his hair (which, for some reason, was white despite his young age) before responding, ‘… there won’t be a crisis if we win, Mihael.’
Mihael Keehl sprang up and Mail Jeevas, who was sitting next to him, yelped in pain when Mihael’s left shoulder haphazardly bumped into his right arm.
But before Mihael could open his mouth, the last and eldest participant in this conversation spoke. ‘We should make Wammy’s as popular as possible, serving the best coffee and snacks we can. Let the reporters and other people “check on” us and attest to our superiority over Kira Kira. Anyhow, we have to…’ The dark bags under his eyes might have made another person look exhausted, but they totally failed to hide the sharpness in L Lawliet’s gaze towards the ‘enemy’s territory’.
Neither café had walls and L’s unfriendly regard soon met its rival in Light’s intense glare. Neither person bothered to greet or acknowledge the other’s existence in any way.
‘… we have to send them packing.’
*
‘I saw that Mrs Yagami was very interested in Wammy’s seven types of latte this afternoon, but was too polite to actually ask.’
‘She was just interested in the drawings on your banner. And that wasn’t even your own doing. You just asked that Linda girl whom River knows to draw for you.’
‘But can’t Master Kira Kira actually keep mama’s attention with his own coffee?’
‘She just happened to look around when I talked with my sister. And I should mention that Sayu doesn’t drink coffee except those that I make. She hates everything that’s on sale elsewhere but begs me to make her café au lait every day in high school. That’s why I began making coffee and getting better day by day at such a young age.’
*
Same as many people who visited Heartbeat for the first time, the two men ogled at Kira Kira Café on their left and Wammy’s Coffee Corner on their right, seemingly unsure which way they should head for.
‘Hey, since these two cafés have to kill the other if they want to stay after the revamp, what d’you think they’ll do? Maybe wage a price war?’ The slightly taller man wore his large rucksack in the front instead of at the back, and although he was busy searching for something inside the bag’s main pocket, it did not hinder his passion for gossip.
The other man, shorter but with shoulders a little broader, did not carry a bag but had a digital camera around his neck—a tourist?—and he was quick at dismissal. ‘No, that’d just look desperate… What are you looking for?’
Staggering as he dug into the rucksack aggressively, the taller man collided with two other walkers (who entered Kira Kira and Wammy’s, respectively) before answering, ‘I can’t find my pen… where is it?’
‘Mind you don’t drop anything or bump into more people.’
The banal exchange would have completely escaped everyone’s attention—no one would have cared enough to question why a tourist would need a pen in the middle of a shopping mall—but all was changed when a 91 mm × 55 mm piece of paper chose this exact moment to leap out of the rucksack. Its spectacular consecutive somersaults would put most Olympic gymnasts to shame, but what truly captured the audience’s attention was the large, red logo blazoned on it. When it finally landed on the corridor between the two coffee shops, there was no mistaking what it was.
The signature magnifying glass printed on every issue of Investigation.
Reacting as quickly as he could, its owner stooped and covered the logo with one palm. He then cautiously picked it up, confirmed that the name Touta Matsuda was still attached to the other side of the card (as if it could run away), and slipped it back into his rucksack.
When he stood up, Matsuda gave a tentative thump-up to his fellow Investigator, but Hideki Ide rolled his eyes and muttered, ‘Fool, you immediately trying to cover the logo just makes us more suspicious! If anyone has seen it, we can’t even pretend to have just received the business card from a random reporter!’
Matsuda shuddered. ‘But we’re supposed to be “secret customers”… well, no one has been looking, right?’
If anyone had really been looking, it would have been easy to recognise the card’s prominent logo—the corridor was very narrow and there was nothing between it and either café, after all. Gulping at the dangerous prospect, Matsuda looked around nervously.
A bespectacled, stern-looking waiter in Kira Kira was busy talking to a customer (answering queries?), while a lanky boy wearing a pair of goggles and looking like he had just entered adulthood was cleaning a desk in Wammy’s. None of them had actually noticed his business card giving a gymnastic performance, right?
‘Let’s hope so. Anyway we should start. Which one should we try first? And I still have no idea how we’re going to visit two coffee shops in one afternoon without arousing suspicion.’
‘Don’t worry about looking suspicious all the time, or you’ll look even more suspicious!’
‘And who just did the most suspicious thing not a minute ago?’
‘Ahem.’ Both Matsuda and Ide jumped. Amid their whispered argument, they had not noticed the approach of the goggled waiter from Wammy’s. ‘Sorry. Is there anything I can help? Maybe you’d like a cuppa coffee? We’ve got excellent cappuccino.’
One hand gesturing towards Wammy’s invitingly, Mail put his other hand on Matsuda’s shoulder and began leading the two ‘tourists’ to the entrance.
Matsuda and Ide had no choice but to walk in. They missed Mail feigning holding a magnifying glass at their back, but certainly could not miss the barista who looked like he had not slept for a year, who had seen Mail’s signal and who then proceeded to recommend Wammy’s various kinds of espresso to the two undercover reporters.
They ordered the recommended cappuccino and were seated at a pair of black and white single seater sofas. The drinks arrived quickly, but the coffee mugs had not even touched their lips when a chirpy female voice reached their table.
‘What’s so special about cold brew coffee, then?’
Matsuda and Ide’s attention was immediately caught by Misa who, though wearing a waitress uniform, was sitting on a red plush chair just next to the entrance of Kira Kira Café, with a glass of cold coffee in her hand. She asked her question in a raised voice, ensuring that everyone at Wammy’s could hear her every word clearly.
So did the person who replied to Misa. ‘Cold brew coffee is made by steeping coffee ground in cold water. Compared to iced coffee which is just hot coffee cooled down, cold brew coffee is sweeter, less bitter and more mellow on the stomach. Since it doesn’t need ice to cool the coffee, it is also less watery. This is another important factor why cold brew tastes so good!’
L narrowed his eyes at the sight of Light Yagami answering Misa Amane’s (undoubtedly staged) question with a smug smile on his face. The young owner of Kira Kira Café had stepped out of his usual spot behind the barista table, leaving Teru Mikami (who had finished his conversation with the customer) to perform pouring some precious cold brew into glasses as ostentatiously as possible.
‘Cold brew takes a long time to prepare. That’s why it’s usually more rare and expensive, but Kira Kira Café has developed its own unique way to make cold brew coffee efficiently and at a low cost. It is the only place in the entire Heartbeat plaza where you can taste this delicacy!’ With a grandiose arm movement, Light concluded his pompous speech, drawing applause from Misa, all other women and a couple of men in Kira Kira and—to L’s annoyance—one of the Investigation reporters at the other side of the aisle.
‘Matsuda, what’re you doing?’ Even Ide could not suppress a grimace.
‘He’s such a good speaker! I wish I could speak that well too!’ Matsuda finally tasted the cappuccino in front of him, but his unfocused gaze suggested cold brew fantasies. L just wished he could steep the reporter (and the entire Kira Kira Café) in Antarctica for a cup of cold brew malignance.
Taking after Light’s example (not that L would admit it), L slid out of Wammy’s barista station and made his way towards Matsuda and Ide. Nate caught on immediately, exchanged a high five with L and went to fill in.
It took less than five seconds for L to reach the reporters’ table. ‘Actually you can make cold brew at home as well. What you need is just time, not any elaborate equipment. It’s not that difficult. There’re plenty of recipes on the Internet you can google.’ He spoke in a low voice because unlike someone, he did not need to be heard by people in the opposite shop.
He took a second to smile innocently at The Someone (earning a death glare in return). Then, to the shock of his audience, he shook his shoes off and stepped onto a grey single seater. Crouching in his seat, he placed the objects in his hand (which Nate had just given him in their high five) on the table—a few coffee beans and a miniature coffee machine.
‘A lot of coffee tastes bitter due to a lack of precision in grinding and brewing. Coffee making is about science, especially in the case of espressos. The mixture of coffee beans and the exact time to grind them—you don’t want to grind for ten seconds too short or too long because that may destroy the beans’ flavour and aroma.’ L dangled two coffee beans right in front of Matsuda and Ide, the faint chocolatey smell getting stronger as he waved his fingers slightly. ‘But Wammy’s has long perfected the best formula for that. The heat and pressure to exert through an espresso machine also requires deliberate calculation, but thanks to the innovation of Wammy’s founder, Mr Quillsh Wammy…’
L droned on. Though perhaps not as charming as Kira Kira’s young and handsome boss, he successfully caught Matsuda’s attention with the semi-functional miniature espresso machine, and the reporter’s eyes shone with wonder when the tiny buttons clicked and buzzed under L’s command. Ide, who had been grumpy from the beginning, hid his face with one hand. He did not want to look at his naïve companion.
‘Feel free to ask me any questions.’ L concluded his demonstration with a small smile. ‘I don’t mind providing whatever information you’ll need for writing your article. There’s no point in pretending you’re not from Investigation any longer, I think.’
Ide added another hand. He did not want to look at this world.
*
‘Don’t talk when you know nothing! Kira Kira Café is so much more than “an amateur playhouse”. Since the day I was old enough to board a plane on my own, I’ve travelled with every penny I owned to learn about different coffees around the world!’
‘Weren’t you hospitalised for “drinking too much coffee” one day in Paris? I’m sure that’s quintessential professionalism.’
‘That was not for drinking too much coffee. That was for drinking poorly-made, unhygienic coffee! And you can bet I’ve put all the lesson I learnt into Kira Kira’s operation. Unlike you, who couldn’t even properly remember when you’ve heard the other day.’
*
‘The mall is going to close in fifteen minutes. Mind the time, Yagami-san!’
‘Thank you, sir. Leaving soon!’
‘The mall is going to close in fifteen minutes. Mind the time, Lawliet-san!’
‘Thanks.’
The security guard walked away while Light wiped the last water droplet off the coffee funnel. After placing both the cloth and the funnel back to their usual places, he took off his apron and grabbed his belongings, preparing to leave.
Save for the very rare days when he enjoyed a holiday, he was always the last to leave. The third floor of the Heartbeat shopping mall was almost totally silent and empty.
Except for The Enemy, the perpetual pest, of course.
Though L was acting strange. He strode out of Wammy’s, walking quickly but also deliberately keeping quiet, eyes scanning for something. He kept putting a hand behind one of his ears while circulating Wammy’s, but Light did not understand what he could be listening for—they were the only two people on the third floor now, and the faint rustling sounds they made certainly did not deserve special attention.
Apparently L did not find what he wanted to, because when he emerged from the back of Wammy’s again, he was actually heading for the other coffee shop, a most suspicious expression on his face.
Light hastened to block him when he was deemed too near Kira Kira Café. ‘What do you want?’ Light asked, clearly not welcoming the trespasser.
L blinked at the question. After looking around and then trying to stare behind Light (who tried his best to prevent that), he finally spoke. ‘Didn’t you hear anything?’
Despite looking somewhat serious, this guy was utterly full of crap. ‘I only heard whatever sounds you’ve been making.’ Light folded his arms and straightened himself, hoping he came off as intimidating. ‘And?’
L stared and looked around again, but to no avail. ‘Nothing.’ He finally deadpanned and returned to Wammy’s.
Now it was Light’s turn to become suspicious. He paid extra attention to L’s movement at the same time as he prepared to leave, but nothing happened.
L was also leaving. He usually left at the same time as Light—just before the security guard locked the mall entrances. Light had the nagging suspicion that L sometimes hid and slept in the mall at night, but he never had any proof. He just did his best to make sure L could not break into Kira Kira without him finding out (which was a difficult task because both cafés did not have doors or walls, but he had many tricks in his pocket).
L leaving the building meant Light did not have to worry about being sabotaged, but it did not automatically make his way home more enjoyable.
Even today, he still could not fathom what unkind deity could possibly make him and L Lawliet not just operate competing businesses next to each other, but also live on the same floor in the same building. Exasperation at divine nastiness was a loyal buddy when they boarded the same orange and green one-decker every night and day, throughout their three-year tenures in Heartbeat.
The two baristas always sat at the back row, one occupying the left-most seat and the other the right-most. The ride was quiet save for the sound of motion. Only a handful of other passengers scattered in the front while an awkward silence filled the air. Light never talked to L and vice versa, each preferring to look at the neon lights and street lights that forced insomnia onto the city.
The ride took less than fifteen minutes. Silence followed their steps off the bus, at the lobby and in the lift. As the door to the lift opened, they walked towards their respective apartment along the narrow and straight corridor, salmon pink ceramic tiles dull and fatigued under pale lighting.
Light stopped in front of the second closest door to the lift, opening his bag for the keys. L passed him without saying a word.
‘Hope you sleep well tonight…’ Light’s murmur was soft and sudden, but certainly loud enough to be heard.
L looked over his shoulders.
‘…so that you won’t hallucinate non-existent voices again. Watching you do that pains me so.’ Light made sure L was looking at him before flashing a scornful smile.
‘Or maybe you’ll develop better sensitivity overnight. Difficult task, I know, but senses are essential for making passable coffee. Unlike pain, which you seem partial to but is actually useless.’ The retort was quick and L did not even put up an expression. Instead, a staring match was declared and sharp, pitch-black eyes were fixed on dark brown, almond ones.
The match was intense but short-lived. A few seconds later, Light plucked out his keys and proceeded to open the door, while L resumed the way to his apartment. Both knew to preserve their strength for the next contest because their rivalry had lasted day and night and stretched from Heartbeat to home.
If they did not win this round of sparring, there would always be another one the next night. After that, they would always board the earliest bus tomorrow and continue fighting with every cup of coffee they made. The feud had trained them well and added flavour—an unorthodox but refreshing spark of spice tinting caffeinated lives with crimson. Every night they closed their eyes to rest, they had the vision of defeating each other next day to look forward to.
But they would not be looking forward to that a month from now. Competition was now not just a game in their daily routine, but a battle of survival.
*
‘You know what? As much as you boast your knowledge of coffee to every customer, you only ever serve yourself affogato. It’s like you’re just going after the ice cream instead of the coffee. You even went for a second scoop today without the drink.’
No response was unforthcoming, only a stare.
‘I just find it hypocritical that you open a café, yet you seem not very interested in your own coffee. Skills can’t make a barista great without passion. Why don’t you open an ice cream parlour instead?’
‘It sounds like you live off coffee alone. I thought one’d die with that, but I’m obviously ignorant of alien biology.’
‘Who…’
‘And your observation skills are simply excellent. We’ve just been neighbours for three days and you already conclude that I like ice cream more than coffee. In fact, I’m just experimenting making ice cream with Wammy’s own coffee. I haven’t even eaten anything except affogato these days.’
‘…’
‘Coffee to you is just coffee, but to me it can live in anything. Revise your slogan. Passion can’t make a barista great without imagination.’
*
Under the enthusiasm (read: pressure) of the two café owners, Matsuda and Ide visited two more times and acquired more than enough materials to write in the Life section of Investigation a series of articles which, spinning the angle of competition, were actually just introducing Kira Kira Café and Wammy’s Coffee Corner to the readership. Though unskilled in masquerading themselves, the pair proved to be proficient journalists. Their appeal to ‘visit the cafés and choose the winner yourself, dear reader’ worked—three weeks saw a noteworthy increase in the customer toll of both shops.
The scythe awaited the losing shop in one week’s time, and tension and anxiety shrouded all staff members of both sides. Even without prompting, all full-time staff had opted to take no leave before they could be certain of their café’s fate. Light began to have bizarre dreams of first-class Robusta coffee beans seeking a job in employment agencies or begging for money with a coffee cup on the street.
He wondered whether his arch-enemy from Wammy’s was as dedicated to the welfare of coffee beans in his dreams, but L might not even have time for sleep these days. The number of nights Light suspected L of staying at the mall overnight had increased drastically. For nearly every day in the last two weeks, L would disappear right after the security guard’s cue call and not be seen in the last bus at night. He would also mysteriously appear at a very early time next morning without having been in the first bus, the size of his eye bags suggesting that he had slept very little or not at all. Was he hiding at Wammy’s at night, using the time when no one was in Heartbeat to invent some ‘secret weapon’ recipe?
Last night was another one like this and Light’s solitary journey to and from home was imbued with the apprehension of not knowing what L was up to. The feeling did not abate while Light, arriving at Kira Kira in the next morning just five minutes after the mall was unlocked, found L already hunched up in one of Wammy’s sofas, inspecting something tiny between his thumb and index finger.
Apprehension turned to dread as Light neared the barista station that he covered with a red cloth before leaving. One look sufficed to tell him that the creases on the cloth were different. Different from what he especially arranged every night before leaving, and different in a way that could only be caused by a human. Dread burst into scorching rage at the implication, pushing an incensed Light into Wammy’s Coffee Corner without thinking.
It was so early in the morning and no one except L was at the café, so Light found himself standing in the middle of enemy territory in no time.
L seemed to take no offense at his nemesis butting in without invitation, which in Light’s eyes confirmed his guilt. But when Light tried to grab his white, round necked T-shirt in a fit of anger, he slapped the hand away and growled threateningly.
‘I don’t know how you know, but you clearly deduced that someone has entered your shop last night after you left.’ L said, standing up and moving defensively while Light scuttled left and right for a chance to strike again. ‘And you’ve somehow decided that it was me.’
Light took two more small steps, and then halted. ‘And you’re going to deny it like the liar you are, saying that I have no proof.’ The venom in his voice might be alarming, but Light did not motion further because what he just said was technically true. That L had stayed overnight was his suspicion. Though the older barista definitely had motivation to sabotage Kira Kira, he obviously would not be stupid enough to give himself away, and Light would have to find out on his own what the other man had done. ‘You better not let me find the proof, then. Sorry for disturbing.’ Light turned away tensely, without meaning his apology.
‘The culprit did not have time to do anything, because I chased him away before he could.’
Light swung back angrily at the implication of L’s words. ‘So you admit you were here last night!’
‘And why do you think I’m admitting this to you?’
‘You somehow want to win my trust, but fabricating a trespasser is hardly believable enough to achieve what you want.’
‘Ah, but there’s not an ounce of trust in you. You’re as pressed out as the coffee beans in an espresso machine.’
Light began indignantly but L continued despite that. ‘I wouldn’t fabricate an unbelievable tale because I know it wouldn’t work. I’m only saying this because it’s the truth. I have two more things to say. The second thing is that I invite you to stay behind, starting tonight. I believe the person may come back within this week, maybe on this very night.’
‘… What? And you said “second”?’
‘The first thing is that I invite you to look at this.’ L handed Light what he was keeping in his palm all this while.
*
‘I don’t know whether I should wish that you and Keehl would make peace or wish you be rid of him. I’ve never had this problem so I don’t really understand the hardship when even your staff doesn’t agree with the way you make coffee.’
‘I don’t really understand the happiness of having to running a bunch of drooling puppets around oneself either. But I guess some people just need constant admiration from blind followers.’
‘Will you lose your voice without spitting insult on innocent people? Everyone now working full-time at Kira Kira has all been my faithful customers at one time! My staff admire me because they appreciate my coffee! Yours can’t even be paid to praise your lousy drinks.’
‘Well, if you must know, all of my full-time staff have actually been Mr Wammy’s protégés and I’m training them to open their own coffee shops one day, to spread Mr Wammy’s coffee philosophy post-mortem. Dissonance is encouraged because it helps them learn and I don’t need the world to revolve around me. And anyway, once they give their idea more thought and taste, they’ll finally realise that I’m right.’
‘… you don’t need the world to revolve around you but “they’ll finally realise that I’m right”… very convincing, absolutely inspirational…’
‘… pot calling kettle black…’
*
Light’s feet trembled slightly as they touched the vinyl flooring without the protection of shoe soles. Wearing just socks in a public area made Light feel more exposed than he actually was, and he could not help but doubt his decision to stay at the mall overnight with L.
‘Don’t give me that face. We need to be as quiet as possible as we move and your boots are too loud. Wear shoes with rubber soles next time.’
As if he could have predicted this when he chose his footwear in the morning. And as if there would be a next time.
L had studied the blind spots of the mall’s surveillance cameras and the security guard’s routines very well. Working together, the two men successfully stole two spare keys from the large set in the security office and hid in the female restroom opposite it (they knew no female guard was on duty today and decided that it was the best strategic position).
Technically, they only had to wait until all security guards locked and left the building. Guards were only stationed outside the mall at night, and when the morning came, nobody would have the interest to check the surveillance feed inside unless there was any complaint about unexplained lost or damage of property.
But something was clearly different tonight.
‘You’re right.’ Light hardly believed that such words could come out from his own mouth. Opening the restroom door very slightly, Light observed the movement—or lack thereof—outside. ‘The last guard should have left already, but he didn’t. What’s he doing in the security office?’
‘Bidding for time. And if I assume correctly, he’ll probably switch off all surveillance cameras soon. Maybe he already did, so as not to leave any evidence of his activity. I’m pretty sure the feed was switched off last night, or he would have known it was me who scared him away with those card boxes near the boutique, but he didn’t pay attention to me today, and was just generally jumpy instead. He probably thinks that “accidentally” switching off the feed for one or two nights is a much less serious crime than there being evidence of him actually sabotaging Heartbeat’s shops.’
‘But why would he do that? So now you’re not totally lying, but I still don’t see why a security guard would have motive to harm a coffee shop.’
‘Two coffee shops, I believe.’
‘Whatever. If your theory is true then it’s just…’
‘We’ll find out when we catch him in action.’
L gripped at the cufflink in his palm—the same one that he asked Light to inspect in the morning. According to L, since the time he heard odd noises before the mall closed, he had tried to stay inside at night as often as he could, hiding in a restroom from which he could detect suspicious movement around the café area, certain that Light Yagami and his cronies were plotting to strike when no one was watching over Wammy’s. Last night was not any different.
Light first scoffed at the idea that he might do something underhanded at night (how distrustful must L have been to suspect such a baseless theory?), then balked when he heard about L hiding in a restroom, and was now trying hard to ignore the irony of himself doing the exact same thing.
L’s wait had not been fruitless, but he was surprised to recognise the outline of the security uniform under the dim moonlight from the window, and even more so when the approaching person did not enter Wammy’s Coffee Corner but Kira Kira Café.
In Light’s opinion, the most dubious part in L’s story was that L, upon the ‘instinct that the trespasser was up to no good’, decided to distract the security guard by overthrowing a pile of card boxes just outside the restroom. L claimed that he assumed the guard would come to inspect what happened and planned to ambush him then, but the man was frightened away instead, and did not emerge to tidy up the card boxes until Heartbeat was ‘officially open’ again. Near a chair in Kira Kira, L discovered a cufflink that belonged to a security uniform, confirming the identity of the trespasser who had nearly tripped at the exact same spot when he ran away.
‘The good news is, if he’s that weak-kneed and clumsy, it probably won’t be that difficult to get the truth out of him, once we catch him guilty on spot.’ L concluded when he finished his tale.
Light remembered being unsure whether he should believe L. ‘… let’s say that you’re telling the truth and that he’ll really try whatever he wanted to try again tonight… why would you “invite” me?’
But for some inexplicable reason, he remembered the answer that followed even more.
‘Because you’re already making a fuss.’ L continued before Light could complain. ‘Because you’re actually not the enemy this time. And because I know you would care and work with me to stop the ploy. Because you don’t make coffee for your little sister every day and get sick in France for a security guard to harm Kira Kira Café.’
Light remembered being speechless at this explanation.
Though, at the same time, he was not that surprised. Just as L picked up on who Light Yagami was from their nightly bickering, Light also understood why L would react so drastically towards any possible threat to Heartbeat’s cafés. Because L needed coffee to honour the man who raised him. Because he cockily believed that his coffee was the embodiment of perfection (like Light). And because he had devoted his life, spirit and soul to his café (also like Light).
Light understood perfectly.
He was brought back to reality by the opening of the security office’s door. He signalled to L and the game was back on.

EXCLUSIVE:
HEARTBEAT CONSPIRACY
Why is the Yotsuba Corporation poisoning everyone’s favourite coffee shops?
Loyal readers of Investigation would have been aware of the ongoing epic battle between Kira Kira Café and Wammy’s Coffee Corner in the Heartbeat shopping complex—the war where only one can survive! Everyone in the city all have our idea of which café should stay after Heartbeat’s revamp, and are eagerly awaiting the Yotsuba Corporation to announce the final winner!
But what if Yotsuba does not intend there to be a winner at all?
In a bold midnight excursion, the owners of the two popular coffee shops uncovered the corporate giant’s egregious attempt to disgrace and oust both shops from the mall without incurring public backlash! Through employing a security guard!
Shocking? Yes! Preposterous? Well, we may not have believed it ourselves if we haven’t been there and seen it with our own eyes! Luckily, the café owners are as brilliant as the espressos and cold brews they make, and have actually asked us to be witnesses beforehand!
So this is it! The revelation of the Yotsuba Conspiracy! Brought to you first-hand by your faithful Investigators, Touta Matsuda and Hideki Ide!
Receiving Lawliet-san’s signal, we evaded the outside guards (who, unlike the inside one, were innocent, as far as we know!) and entered Heartbeat. One of the locked entrances was already opened for us, and we soon stationed at a safe spot on the third floor.
And it began! Unaware that everything he did was observed by FOUR pair of scrutinising eyes, the security guard unscrewed the pipe connecting to Wammy’s Coffee Corner’s espresso machine, pulled out a small packet and began to pour the content into the pipe!
Having the evidence of crime safely recorded by the Investigators’ superb night vision camera, it was time to reveal ourselves! Look at the security guard’s face when he saw light coming out from two other torches, and the two coffee shop heroes standing right behind it!
It took little to persuade the culprit to tell the truth. According to him, the Yotsuba Corporation regretted its announcement to keep one café operating and wanted its new bistro, which would be directly run by Yotsuba and was considered a project of utmost importance, to be the sole premise offering food and drinks in Heartbeat.
But by that time, Kira Kira vs. Wammy’s had already attracted much public attention thanks to Investigation, and the management thought it unwise to disclose its intention without a better excuse. Therefore, they bribed the security guard to taint both coffee shops’ water. When coffee lovers complained of food poisoning, Yotsuba would have the best reason in the world to expel Kira Kira and Wammy’s from Heartbeat!
In tears, Kurou Otoharada said he regretted accepting Yotsuba’s bribe and kneeled in front of Lawliet-san and Yagami-san to ask for their forgiveness. (Though Yagami-san was too busy putting on his shoes back to reply.) Otoharada also claimed to possess evidence that would prove Yotsuba’s guilt.
The Yotsuba Corporation had declined comment as of publication.
*
Weeks after Matsuda and Ide’s article scandalised the whole town, Light and L boarded the bus with satisfaction under a clear night sky. They had just ended a negotiation with the Yotsuba management and would soon see a considerable sum of money deposited in their bank accounts. They had agreed to settle out of court since they considered the damage to Yotsuba’s public reputation brought by Investigation’s report as sufficient revenge. The money would also allow each of them to open a bigger coffee shop at a better location.
Both Kira Kira Café and Wammy’s Coffee Corner were going to leave Heartbeat once and for all.
Light had been extremely amused during the negotiation, when one of Yotsuba’s men in suit offered a permanent waiver of rent as part of their compensation.
‘You really thought I’d been fighting this hard because I was scared of leaving your dingy mall?’ He snorted. ‘Kira Kira could have opened and succeeded brilliantly anywhere, anytime. I just couldn’t stand the thought of losing.’
Losing to Wammy’s when they had been rivals for three long and hard years had been unacceptable. But the contest had ended abruptly, without either of them becoming a clear winner or loser.
The funny thing was that they seemed to have learnt and understood a great deal about each other during their rivalry. His cold brew recipe was still a top business secret, while L’s espresso machine was still non-replicable, but otherwise their competitiveness had brought them close.
If they would look at each other’s way, the distance between the one-decker’s left most and right-most seats was in fact minimal. They would have been able to see the all of each other clearly.
But even tonight, the journey on the bus still ended in familiar silence. The wait in the lobby and in the lift was equally reticent. L and Light walked shoulder-to-shoulder, mutely, on the corridor until the latter stopped at the second door nearest the lift.
Light remained quiet. They probably would not open a coffee shop next to each other anymore. They would not compete anymore. There was no point in throwing verbal jabs anymore. Dedicated to their work as they were, they might not even see each other in this corridor often from now.
Something always disappeared along with the end of one of life’s chapters, did it not?
But he made the wrong decision of wearing his bag on the left shoulder tonight, so when he turned left, he could not help but include L in his vision, and the strangely receptive man immediately glimpsed back.
Now this was awkward. Did they really have to talk? Why did he choose to wear his bag on the left?
Silence pervaded as Light chose his words carefully, but L was one step ahead.
‘Now can I finally get a taste of that cold brew? Maybe I’ll finally figure out how to make it after tasting.’
Light did not expect that. ‘What?’ His first reply was not very sophisticated, and he quickly remedied that by adding, ‘I’m sure my cold brew isn’t something you can “figure out” just by tasting it. I’m interested in why you’d ask that, though. Oh!’ His voice became a little loftier. ‘Maybe it’s because your espresso tastes like metal and can help me work out the secret of your magic machine?’
‘Don’t be ridiculous. My espresso doesn’t make people think of machines.’
‘As far as I’m concerned, you’re the dense one who just made an absurd proposal.’
‘I just tried to say something different now that the situation has changed. Do you prefer that we be rude to each other even now? After resolving our rivalry and even going through a semi-alliance?’
‘But what you said is still rude. Try again.’
Light found it easy slip into the familiar rhythm of banter, but he was also curious what L would do next. It was even a little amusing to watch L looking challenged by the task of saying something ‘not rude’.
Finally, L blinked and his expression cleared. ‘Goodnight, then.’
He actually seemed proud of what he came up with, and Light could not resist laughter any longer. His voice exploded in the quietude of the night. He tried to stop, but ‘… lame…’ was all he managed to say before mirth took control.
‘Now who is rude?’
‘… Well… haha… well… I guess I’m sorry, then.’ L was not at all convinced when Light still could not erase the wicked smile throughout his ‘apology’.
Light took a deep breath. For some reason, even though the day had mostly gone well for him, he only felt the most relaxed now. The unexpected shot of cheeriness lifted his heart and made him fly.
When he spoke again, his smile was softer, more sincere. ‘Indeed, we’ve been rude to each other for so long, and even the most normal greeting sounds like an improvement.’
Maybe they would board the bus together again. Or the train. Or a taxi? Or they could just invite each other for coffee, if they wanted to.
Coffee never made itself. It needed great baristas like Light Yagami and L Lawliet.
‘Goodnight.’

Live Blogging: Death Note (The Movie)
DEATH NOTE, NETFLIX ORIGINAL FILM (Somehow… I don’t know how, but apparently it is an original even though it existed prior to the creation but you know, NETFLIX and shit…)
Blogger’s Note: I’ve watched Death Note the anime and I’ve read about half of the manga, so I’m decently familiar with how this story is supposed to pan out, okay, and I’m just going to live blog my feelings about this thing that exists. You don’t have to agree or disagree with my ramblings. That being said, I never trust a nearly perfect rating – which this film has – so let’s just move on forward.
YOU ARE HEREBY WARNED OF SPOILERS FOR BOTH THE DEATH NOTE MOVIE, THE DEATH NOTE ANIME, AND THE DEATH NOTE MANGA.
PRE-WATCH: I’ve seen a few different trailers. I’m excited to see L being played by a person of color since it gives us this anti-hero/heroic character that is generally viewed with positivity. That’s particularly awesome. I’m also impressed that they were able to keep Ryuk looking so much like he does in the manga and anime.
 Ready – set – and - - -
 GO:
Suspenseful music…. Two screens of NETFLIX ORIGINAL reminding me how mad I am that it isn’t actually an original – that the word they wanted was actually EXCLUSIVE. But fuck Netflix in particular, they are big enough that they can probably get away with stupid shit like this.
Light doing other peoples’ homework for cash bothers me.
This bitchy cheerleader is already annoying. If that is Amane I’m going to be super pissed off. I hate Amane to begin with, if I’m being honest, so this girl is going to really seal that deal.
Side note, I really fucking hate that this is a bunch of white kids. I hope that this shit at least ends up taking place in America to justify such a dumb fucking change.
I really don’t like anything yet. Light is super OOC which is annoying.
MIA? MIA? Please tell me that this is not a name change for Misa Amane…….
LIGHT’S MOM IS DEAD? OKAY THERE IS NOTHING SIMILAR EXCEPT THAT LIGHT IS HIS NAME AND HE HAS A DEATH NOTE.
Two weeks of detention… Oh yeah, that’s so much trouble – holy fuck.
I spy a Brit flag in the background… Perhaps this is not taking place in America?
Oh goodness gracious they’re going to have him kill because he’s being petty and pissy. That is not how this happened.
Not to mention – the rules populate as time passes, or as circumstances arise. And the pages were blank when he got it… He didn’t open this thing at school – HE DID NOT EVEN FIND IT AT SCHOOL…
Light was quiet smart, anti-social, not interested in girls… He had his whole family… This Light is a cocky, orphan, coward who uses his intelligence to make a quick buck and save his ass.
I don’t like Ryuk’s voice. It bothers me that Ryuk isn’t visible at all times. The way Ryuk speaks is even wrong.
I like swearing – I can get behind that shit.
I hate that this is so misleading because the scenario is pretty accurate, but – it seems like he was already planning to do that anyway.
Ryuk DID NOT give it to Light for the potential he has – it’s just so wrong.
I get the feeling that Light’s dad might be a drunk.
Well maybe, maybe his father is just a nitpicky father cop.
Holy hell if he kills his dad I’m going to punch walls for fucking real.
 R EYE IKKKK
NOT EVEN CLOSE THIS IS THE FUCKING AVATAR ALL OVER AGAIN HOLY SHIT HELP ME I AM SO MAD
For the record, Ryuk doesn’t turn lights off and act like a Boogeyman – he’s actually like a shadow and he’s generally really quiet and kind of sassy. He likes to tell jokes. Ryuk isn’t particularly frightening in any way except his appearance.
Oh, they fixed his name. It’s about as close as it’s going to get in an American accent.
That’s not what happened with the Death Note passing happened. Ryuk did it as a joke. There’s a different shinigami who actually had this happen – but you know – Netflix is taking a page of the book Disney read before destroying the canon!verse of Star Wars…. So…
Fuck Netflix and Disney.
 I’m kind of pissed off
Woah – pause – that death was horrifyingly graphic.
Also, these are all supposed to be heart attacks. There’s no possible way for this story to properly play out when the deaths are not actually heart attacks – and not actually only criminals.
So I’m pissed off about so many things… But like… the fact that Light is just reading the Death Note all over the place in public.
Holy fuck – Light is trying to get that Mia vagina hard….
  LOL
Only the keeper can see the shinigami is a lie. Any person that touches it can see the fucking death god.
IT IS PISSING ME OFF QUITE A BIT THAT THEY ARE ONLY TAKING A FEW KEY MOMENTS AND THEN CHANGING EVERYTHING ELSE AND IT SO DIFFERENT…
I mean it’s super American, and if I didn’t know what was up, this probably would be pretty great.
This girl playing Mia is the next Kristen Stewart – calling it right here and right now.
I foresee an unnecessary sex scene. Yep – it is happening now probably.
HEY I LOVE THAT HE ASKS – BUT SHE IS SAYING HE DOESN’T HAVE TO ASK BUT MALES OF THE EARTH – ALWAYS ASK
So, just for your information, there was never anything sexual in the books – not explicitly.
THEY’RE WRITING NAMES AND FUCKING OH MY GOD THE FUCK
It’s not American if there’s not unnecessary sex.
I’m beginning myself to chill out and try to finish this shitty ass movie.
IS HE LITERALLY HAVING THE VICTIMS WRITING THE NAME LORD KIRA BEFORE DEATH
This is so disgustingly fucked up.
I revoke previous compliments. I do not approve of any of this bullshit.
THE ACTUAL LIGHT, LIGHT FUCKING YAGAMI WAS SUCH A NORMAL FUCKING PERSON AND DID NOT GO AROUND LOOKING FOR PRAISE HE WAS HAPPY TO BE ANONYMOUS..
Oh look tits… There has to be tits somewhere, right? For it to sell there must be tits.
Maybe if I just make the book cover of my first book a picture of tits it will sell bunches.
THEY HAVE THE ACTOR WHO PLAYERS HIRO NAKUMURA TALK ABOUT THE NAKUMURA FAMILY omg
 Random singing????
L does have money to spare at his disposal for sure, but he was never so obvious because it draws in a lot of attention.
HOW DO I LOOK – Psh… listen – this whole show is fucked.
What happened to his office dudes? Like, the hell?
Watari is correct, and he’s younger than he really was, but at least he’s the correct race. That bugs me big time – but I read fanfiction set as an AU – so I’ll just bite my tongue.
HE IS NOT SITTING THE WAY HE IS SUPPOSED TO SIT
IN CLASS? She’s so fucking weird.
You know what, I might be able to appreciate Misa Amane after this shit. What a weird feeling.
Back tracking – L kept his letter pretty spot on.
Now listen, L ate a lot of candy, but he wasn’t like an addict or anything.
My husband wants you to know that he hates Mr. Turner’s sideburns.
L is sitting a little bit more the correct way. He usually balances on his feet.
Is that seaweed ice cream or something?
 REST YOUR GLUTES?!
He’s got the L mannerisms pretty spot on – but L wears pajamas, doesn’t cover his face – and actually doesn’t present himself publically because it could cost him his life.
THERE IS SO MUCH WRONG AND IT HURTS ME
Ryuk makes a joke – SOMETHING THAT IS ACTUAL CANON.
This whole movie is solid fanfiction content, honestly.
 INDEPENDENT INVESTIGATOR
 DID YOU MEAN CONSULTING DETECTIVE?
Let’s get a fanfiction of Death Note and Sherlock.
In the manga/anime – his dad accepts that his son must be followed.
 HE IS BAREFOOT YASSSS
I think she’s really absolutely nuts – this Mia. I’m really glad Light fucking sassed the shit out of her for wanting to just kill everyone.
SHE FUCKING STOLE THE BOOK DIDN’T SHE?!?!?!?!?!!!!!!
And I’m taking dead Pearl as a sign that she fucking took the book. She is fucking reckless as hell and that is pretty spot on for Amane.
L IS NOT THAT EMOTIONAL – HE IS TRAINED NOT TO BE THAT WAY
I AM SO MAD – RYUK NEVER INTERFERES.
You can’t kill a shinigami with a Death Note. There’s only one way to kill a shinigami.
WHY DIDN’T HE THINK OF HIS BITCH ASS GIRLFRIEND DOING THAT DICK SHIT TO GET HIM CAUGHT OMG
This is so sloppy and messy.
She wants to kill his dad. Saying shit about his mom like that – low blow – fuck her.
I can’t even with this movie right now because I have a lot of negative feelings. There’s so much wrong about it – and yet it does resemble the original enough that I can follow the progression with little agitation.
L DOES NOT KNOW IT. HE THINKS KIRA IS AT LIKE ONLY 7% OMG.
LIGHT IS CONFIRMING THAT HE IS KIRA
L IS GETTING PHYSICAL AND HE NEVER DOES THAT – except like twice.
I just hate that so much character building was just thrown out the window like little pieces of confetti.
Looks like Light has no time for Mia’s shit.
Oh, the penis twitches when he heard her say “I LOVE YOU” which is fake as shit. This cliché bologna is a mess. I am a mess and I want to vomit. Cry vomit.
 Watari was never manipulated from what I recall… I don’t like this…
They’re making L way more emotional than he was and I don’t like it. He does eventually realize that he has some emotions and that they’re foreign to him, but he’s super chill about it.
LIGHT’S DAD TRUSTED KIRA ABOVE ALL ELSE, EVEN HIS SON, AND I HAVE SO MUCH RAGE ABOUT THIS.
THERE ARE SO MANY FUCKING LOOSE ENDS… THE AMERICANIZED THE SHIT OUT OF THIS RIGHT DOWN TO AN ABSURD NUMBER OF PLOT HOLES
This whole orphanage shit scene is made the fuck up – never happened. None fo this shit with Watari was a thing – I’m pretty fucking sure. My memory isn’t perfect but it is pretty fucking good.
I also hate that Light just passing off the charge to fucking Mia. L did not trust Amane at all.
THEY ARE SO OOC AND IT IS HARD FOR ME TO READ OOC FANFICTION, AND PROVING TO BE EVEN HARDER TO FUCKING WATCH HALP ME
I kind of have this feeling that Mia is going to kill Light at the end of all of this and that they’re going to try to make another movie or something. Please don’t do that Netflix.
RYUK WAS NOT LIKE THIS. I AM ACTUALLY CRYING.
I need Light to kill Mia, probably, because this bull shit of her going rogue.
They’re getting this shit right, though, because she’s being manipulative and sociopathic and it’s pretty good. It’s a predictable twist and kind of pathetic and I hate everything.
Why did Netflix have to ruin this shit.
WHY DID THEY FEEL THE NEED TO RUIN IT?!
DEATH NOTE WAS A GEM AS IT EXISTED IN IT’S ORIGINAL STATE.
I think that he should just write that she dies at 11:59 so that he can watch her ass die in his final moments. That’s how this movie needs to end for it to redeem itself.
Honestly, this would make a really popular fanfiction. Probably hundreds of reviews and hundreds of thousands of views – and I would’ve been happier with it being a fanfiction.
THIS LORD KIRA EX MACHINA SHIT OMG
Let’s remember that this doesn’t qualify as an original and I’m trying to calm the fuck down and I just need this to be over.
I really just hope that they both die. I mean, if they could do that for me because in the manga/anime – they do both die and I think they need to keep at least that much accurate.
THIS MOVIE IS SUCH A JOKE OMG
Did he magically lose consciousness? Is she dead? There are questions that need answering.
I am so mad because they’ve basically confirmed there will be a second film… And I cannot believe that this is going to even happen. I have so much feelings right now.
Hate feelings, mostly, but if this wasn’t an anime/manga – this would be pretty dope. I have to give Netflix some credit there. I honestly think that for as much fucking this up as they’ve done – that there are things that are working.
The hyper-Americanization of it really leaves a sour taste in my mouth – but it’s not TERRIBLE. It is very fucked up and terrible and rotten and I want it to be RIGHT. But… since it cannot be right… AT LEAST IT IS GOOD.
L WRITING LIGHT’S NAME IS THE MOST MAKING ME DED THING EVER
And that open ended ending makes me feel like I need some alcohol.
So I’m going to rate this like…
3.5/5. It’s better than average and has it’s spectacular moments, but the numerous plot holes were inexcusable at times. I could have handled the Americanization and the AU sense – IF, and only IF – the characters had been more accurate to their original incarnations. If those characterizations had been more accurate, I think I would have been a little bit less upset about the other changes.
Honestly, if you can set yourself aside from the wild differences, it’s worth the watch.

Note
so i’ve seen some art pieces that toyed with an au where l pulled b from prison to help the kira investigation, and i think you may have touched on that or something similar in the past, but could you maybe do some headcanons on how you think it would pan out? like how b would interact with the other investigators, how the plot might change with b + his eyes involved, etc..? i’m sort of this is too much, but it’s a Thing i think about a lot + i love your hcs so much hehe
Hey thanks! Yeah, I kinda talked before about how I think B would react to following the Kirainvestigation from afar, but I haven’t actually thought about thisscenario too much in-depth yet! I’ll give it a quick lil shot:
HOW BBEING INVOLVED IN THE KIRA CASE MIGHT LOOK:- B would loooooove finally being needed by Lfor something, and he’d use this power over L to get as much attention and perks aspossible. He’d definitely abuse his Watari snackprivileges hardcore
- B and Matsuda might have a kinda fundynamic. Matsuda would probably try to be the most welcoming toward him; I could also see B not taking kindly to L bullying Matsuda, and intervening on Matsuda’s behalf
- B would piss Aizawa off, just because everything pisses Aizawa off
- B would instantly notice that LightYagami didn’t have a lifespan over his head. He wouldn’t have anyclue what that meant, because he wouldn’t know anything about DeathNotes existing yet. He would be extremelyweirded out and intrigued by this, as it’s the first human being he’s ever seen with no lifespan except for himself!
- Since B probably often questions hisown humanity due to his own eyes and lack of lifespan, he’d likely also startwondering: “Does Light Yagami have the eye abilities too? Can healso see people’s names and death dates just by looking at them?”
- This hunch of B’s would vibe pretty well with L’s early theory abouthow Kira is able to kill people with just a face and a name, and Light’s Kira percentage would skyrocket even more in L’s POV. They’d be perplexed about how Light was managing to killpeople from afar, though. They’d still have to figure out what Kira’s murderweapon was, but they’d be extra sure that Light was very suspicious, and they’d be so much closer to knowing that he might have supernatural powerson his side right from the start
- B would be very disturbed by Lind L.Tailor’s death and the second Kira killing people on live TV and such, becauseit would be the first time he witnessed people die before theirlifespans were actually supposed to be up. It would call intoquestion everything B knew about the numbers above people’s heads and his belief that they were always set in stone
- Light would have no clue that L and B knew about the eye powers, nor that anyone could possesssuch powers naturally without making an eye trade first – Ryuk probably wouldn’t know this either, and/or would never inform Light about it if he did – so Light would be at way more of a strategicdisadvantage
- If Light was still broughtonto the investigation team to help, B and Light would no doubt have a weird tension of some sort. I just bet B would love making Light sweat by alwaysdropping little hints about his eyes and such. I’m not sure if they would ever let Light in on such things or not
- B and Misa would get alongwaaayyy too well, and L would disapprove, saying he finds it counter-productive to the case. B would point out that L couldn’treally talk, since it was nothing compared to the crazyobsessiveness going on between L and Light 24/7
