something I love about hilson is that (at least within the show), nobody ever tried that “they have a brotherly bond” BS. because pretty much every queercoded pairing from that era has said something along the lines of “you’re like a brother to me”. but not them!! they were always like “yeah I’m violently attracted to you and think we should fuck…./srs.” yes they were repressed but at least they were REAL about it

I’m rereading Shugo Chara (it’s been years and the nostalgia I feel is immense) and I’ve got to be honest…

I think Amu and Ikuto is the funniest ship in the whole world.

Like, they just like each other. They like spending time with each other. Amu is genuinely comfortable around him until he starts flirting, then she’s mostly just kind of exasperated. All of Ikuto’s interactions with her are based on cats. He brings her food (human can not hunt for themself) and he lays on her (human is the most comfortable pillow) and he teases her (human must be kept on their toes). Like, he’s just a big ol’ cat and I love it.

But also, the manga is fucking hilarious.

When Kukai is graduating and everyone’s saying goodbye and Tadase asks “When I’m in trouble, can I talk to this picture I have of you?” When they’re all talking about what happens around springtime and Ikuto casually says “Being in heat. Because we’re cats.” and Amu’s respons is “Can he say that in this manga?” And Sensei… “Why are you still teaching here?” “I do have credentials.”

Ikuto is the funniest character. He brings cookies because he broke Amu’s tart. He brings ice cream because Utau dropped Kukai’s ice cream (and maybe Amu’s? I’m unclear) ((how did he even know that that happened? Does he have a sixth sense, “Someone just ruined my human’s meal. I have to fix this immediately.”)) He always shows up with a bag of food and just drops it on Amu, then leaves. He came here for one reason and one reason only, and it was to drop off food, bye.

My favourite part of the manga is Nadeshiko/Nagihiko. I love Amu’s comment early on “Nadeshiko changes so fast!” I love Temari, who just repeats “my kimono will get dirty.” And when they’re crawling through the vent or whatever, and Temari is crawling while still covering her face with her sleeve and says “my kimono is getting dirty.” Hilarious. I love Temari so much.

I love that Nadeshiko is Amu’s best friend. They are besties. The extra where Nagihiko breaks out of his house to spend time with Amu? Perfection. Nagihiko holding Amu’s hand, and when she points it out to him, he just goes “Oh yeah. I forgot I’m different today.” I love Nagihiko, he’s the best. The whole explanation is totally wild and honestly baffling, but I love Nagihiko and his weird ass family all the same.

I liked the show a lot as a kid, and I liked the manga even more. I think Amu and Ikuto are adorable. I think it’s funny that the characters don’t act like any elementary school students I’ve ever met (including the ones who were in elementary school with me). I like that Kukai is everyone’s favourite, and he’s just so chipper. I like Tadase’s wish being to conquer the world, and everyone agreeing to help him with it because “It’s fun :)” I especially like that Amu is consistently and constantly judging the capes.

Maybe it’s nostalgia colouring my view. Maybe I’m biased because it made me laugh a couple times. Maybe I just like Ikuto and Amu being comedic foils to each other. Whatever it may be, I really enjoy the manga. Would I recommend it? Yes. Would I recommend it if you’re going to be pissed by the age gap? No.

(“The age gap is so problematic!” But have you considered that they are funny?)

Decided to rewatch NATLA to properly form my own takes that’s been running through my mind: (I’ll have both things that I like and dislike.) Part 1

SPOILERS!

I like it like a friend from a hundred years ago:

First and foremost, NATLA predominantly consists of Asian American Pacific Islanders. Good for them for creating a version that is more in their lens and creativity.

The Bendiiing. All of the elements, except for Earth, are 10/10. I really want it to be more solid, especially on AangvsBumi. It’s not that bad though, so much better than…well u know. I’ll give it an 8/10.

I rewatched it with a Filipino dub and it’s good, 9/10. Aang VO was convincing as a kid, so either they’re a great actor or a great kid actor. The jokes (Sokka’s sarcasm) hits better on my mother tongue

The costume. The only one that I do agree with everyone else that lacks is Zuko’s scar. They should’ve put prosthetics on the eyebrow.

Zuko’s hair? Hello? They did a great job. Even though my sister and I sing Ariana Grande song whenever we see them swaying. It’s an integral part of his story, and I loved that they keep it. There’s an East Asian culture that indicates that kind of haircut as a punishment. I remember my History teacher taught me this in eighth grade but I forgot which it was, my bad. And the actor’s such a champ for having that hair IRL.

My favorite actor performances: Gordon (Aang) superb acting. Liz (Azula). Utkarsh (Bumi). Justin Wong (Chong/SecretTunnelguy) sounds exactly like the character. Made up for my delusional expectation that Dee Bradley Baker would be in this. Ken Leung (Zhao) pisses me off so much, and that means he’s doing a great job. Dallas (Zuko) & Iroh (Paul). DDK's(Ozai) a natural idk if that's acting /j

Was it established in the OG that Katara's intro is a folklore/legend? Because yeah, I don’t mind that it is considered that way in this version.

AAAAA, the Lieutenant Jee younger casting makes so much sense now! The 41st division is chef kiss. Zuko cryiiiing when he was being banished!? Dallas Lui ate!

THE HYBRID ANIMALS LOOOK SO GOOD. The ostrich horse blended well with whoever rides them. It doesn’t look CGI to me. MOMO HIS MOMONESS, MOMO OF THE MOMO DYNASTY

Any Zuko fight choreography (MY FAVORITE CHOREO DALLAS LOOKS FIIIRE). And Aang’s too (Oh hey).

How Ozai’s forced unity/being totalitarian is represented. Reminds me so much of our own government, it amuses me. I know it’s not directly referencing that though. It’s good that they show it early on I guess. With the Fire Nation culty greeting as well.

On a lighter note: THE AIR SPHERE/BALL whatevah, yes! More of this goofiness. How about instead of being inspired by GOT, NATLA should be inspired by Stranger Things in terms of fantasy + childhood simplicity balanced by this trauma they're going through. (Well, ST lacks worldbuilding cause it’s just normal Earth but anyway)

Kyoshi Takeoveeer. I hope Roku gets more screen time someday though. Pls pls pls.

They incorporated the OG character theme songs! Of course! The ones I noticed right away are the FireNation Siblings’. So if you watched OG Avatar and you watched the scene where a mysterious girl joins the infiltration of the FN Royal Palace, you’ll know who she is.

Sorry not sorry, Daddy Dae Kim is daddying. (Although he did catch me off guard in Zuko’s Agni Kai lmao.) The plot.

The Aang VS Zuko fight! A reference to the Fortune Teller fight. The team did so well.

Zuko The Master of Disguise Major In Stealing Clothes. Full-time Avatar researcher.

A fourth wall foreshadows Bumi’s OOC for this version. Jet’s "he’s not like he used to be" in line. I mean they did warn us.

Another 4th wall is the line “Things shouldn’t be here” referring to the prototype Fire Nation balloon.

Nice animation with the retelling of Two Lovers legend.

Lu Ten Funeral scene ate. That single teaaaar. I recommend everyone who loves the animation to watch this scene. To feel something idk AHAHAHAH.

The actors were convincing when interacting with CGI animals. Specifically the badger moles.

ZUKO AND IROH SCENES!

CGI’s great did not waste any money

In Katara’s flashback. She experienced this in her present form. And when she was so scared to go to the place where her mom was killed, she immediately changed back to her young self. Like, I wanted that so bad when I was watching the flashback. I thought, this shouldn’t be the present-day Katara. There should be a moment when she switches back to young again. And they did.

Big Iroh-like moment that makes you cry as an adult when Gyatso was reassuring Aang that the genoc*de wasn’t his fault, and shouldn’t blame himself. Ahh, and the subtle sadness as they say goodbye.

Random eye drawing from Zuko. He’s an artist AHAHAHAH. Okay, I forgot which episode. Sincerely, unreliable narrator.

Showing Zuko's scar when Aang says "Do you even know that lives are at stake".

Basically every scene/plot they 1 by 1 copy from the show. Did not disappoint (well, maybe because OG showrunners were there). Blue Spirit, Siege of the North.

Zuko’s room. I love me some character bedrooms. He’s like a TV Sitcom character for that.

Gaang teamwork scenes! It works and it's dynamic.

Hahn as an honorable man? Yes. I don’t like love triangles so much. I like me some camaraderie. And Ian (Sokka) acted well for feeling included and seen as Hahn recognized his value as warrior/intel.

Zutara fight scene.

Two points that I don’t know if I like but it makes me realize some stuff:

Meek Katara. I know there are specific plot points that Feisty Katara is needed. But she was always nurturing, so I think it makes sense she’s…meek? That Jet scene explains it. Maybe because I relate to her being a log AHAHAHAH. But yeah, uh, I do not, ironically, have strong feelings against that water down.

Angry Bumi. IDK how to feel about him tbh. I always think Bumi is…harsh like that. Almost scary. But yeah, he never blames Aang. Still, it doesn’t feel out of place here. He will return anyway so he’s not this one-dimensional character that is only angry at his friend (hopefully). I never thought of how Bumi would actually feel. And that he will be upset, and now it’s sad because that’s like your friend when you were twelve years old and you wonder where he’s been all this time, and if he’s alive. And..war..never made it any better to process that emotion. So, we got two versions, one that is cautious and then eventually welcomes him, and another who's completely angry and blames a literal kid that he does not know the pain (from the war). Too real, and I personally don’t mind.

I’m the biggest daniel to rbr person ever, but I also think dr3 fans need to stop wasting energy arguing with ppl about him lol. Esp bc fundamentally, they’re right. If the results come , public opinion will sway real quick. He has to show results with points, has to consistently beat his teammate, etc. and as much as there’s reasons why the results haven’t been there, they need to show up some time soon bc that’s what will matter. On his current form, a promotion makes no sense. Anyway, at least his form seems on the rise🫶 and thanks for hopium, daniel ily.

It feels that Alicent’s never truly growing as a character, it’s confusing to me to see the path they’re going making her remain the SAME from episode nine when season two Alicent is supposed to see her grandson being * in front of her, I thought she would change but apparently not. And I don’t mean like she can’t be sad ofc she can, her family is being torn apart, but like…not even a little bit of rage ? Is she really fighting her own sons, same ones she encouraged to take the throne for YEARS, telling them to just now stop and not act ? Doesn’t make sense.

the trailer shows her say that she doesn't want them to prevail "like this". so basically, again, the peacemaking and reduction of any possible violence. which on the face, yeah, reduce any possibility of violence or escalations to wars.

the thing is that SHE has has prepared her kids to see Rhaenyra as both their enemy and as a thief of their "birthright" in a world where such things/usurpations tend to be violent no matter how ill-prepared a side is AND practiced emotional violence against Rhaenyra and would have ruined her kids lives because Rhaenyra didn't conform to "duty and sacrifice". In other words, she has actually made the situation much worse than it could have been years ago.

This woman isn't as "peace-loving" and minded as some people think. The whole "women as peacekeepers for violent men" they have had going on since at least episode 8 to validate Rhaenyra's reserve in reaction to Aegon's coronation was always disengenuously used to futilized any ambition or self assertion these women could have had both before and at the moment of the war's beginning. Aside from Alicent's desire to make Rhaenyra recognize her as her superior as her "due" for her abuse that she herself doesn't fully understand as unfair but really part of "how things should be".

What Alicent wants is to justify the status quo's illusion of peace (that she has not really realized is an illusion, thus her constant attempts at moderation) when it's always really been about preserving itself. what she wants is the facade of the status quo's righteousness to be real.

when season two Alicent is supposed to see her grandson being * in front of her,

I don't know if bk!Alicent was even there when Jaehaerys was killed, because wouldn't we have heard her try to speak to the murderers along with Helaena or try to get those boys behind her or something? Just bc Helaena walked to Alicent's apartments with her kids for a vicit, doesn't mean Alicent was in them at the time.

Sure, we should wait for the actual season for how and why we are seeing the things we are seeing in all these trailers...but considering what we saw in season 1 be confirmed in these trailers AND if the writers wish to be consistent with their own inconsistencies of season 1, they'd have to continue with those things already critiqued...yeah, I just don't have the hope that the writing and how they will adapt the story/war's beginning will be very good. again, I'm excited for the dragons, Baela, Aegon being burned alive, and something I'm forgetting.

mike wheeler & queercoding

aka why i believe the show has been setting him up as gay (rather than bi)

repeated disinterest in women

over the course of the show, mike has been presented as having a lack of (or exclusively performative) level of interest in women

when dustin describes suzie as ‘hotter than pheobe cates’ lucas exclaims in shock/interest, while mike rolls his eyes and seems thoroughly bored/annoyed by the conversation

the s1 scene where they dress el up and mike says ‘pretty’, but he doesn’t seem very invested in it - he could just be echoing el’s words from earlier when she sees the picture of nancy

not showing any interest in girls/dating until lucas and dustin did - feeling pressured to keep up?

his anxiety over being ‘left behind’ in a sense is shown when he argues with lucas in 0401 over lucas wanting to be popular

obviously the opposite of this is his relationship with will, where he clearly views will as the most important person in his life, but also considers himself as caring more than everyone else in will’s life - ‘i’m the only one that cares about will!’ + literally every wheelclair argument in s1

mike & homophobia

there are a few homophobic interactions/characters within the show, & while most of them are directed at will, mike always seems to have the most personal response

take troy’s comment about will in s1 - where lucas and dustin look afraid/slightly uncomfortable, mike looks downright tearful. this is understandable if he’s protecting his best friend, but makes even more sense when considering that it applies to him

while i don’t think there’s any scenes of b*lly being overtly homophobic (correct me if i’m wrong), i think he’s worth mentioning as arguably the most bigoted character in the show, & when he gets flayed in s3, a previously at odds madwheeler bond over their common dislike for him

i might be reaching here, as obviously everyone disliked him (he was flayed), i just think it’s a plausible explanation considering the comments he made about lucas, so i don’t think it's much of a reach to assume this included homophobia (of course, b*lly’s dad did call him the f-slur, so…)

relationship with el

i’ve talked about this before in my autistic mike post, so go read that one if you want more info on this specifically, but essentially i don’t believe mike likes el romantically (or ever did)

the scene where they ‘get together’ in s1 is rushed, awkward, and uncomfortable - we’re not meant to enjoy it. he was trying to ask her to move in with him, whilst implying they’d be like siblings, and then he kisses her straight after? we’re 100% meant to feel weird about this

especially considering this scene comes shortly after mike’s talks with both lucas and nancy, because they assume he has a crush on el - showing he was feeling outside pressure to reconsider their relationship and/or recontextualise it as romantic (when he clearly thought of them as sibling-like)

following on from this the consistent posing of elmike as a familial dynamic is meant to show that THAT is actually a better descriptor of their relationship - & meant to show the GA that their relationship is not romantic

the fact that the season where they spend the most time together (s3) they do. absolutely nothing but make out. something which is immediately picked up on by jopper and lumax (good, healthy ships that milkvan is often posed against) shows neither el nor mike know what they’re ‘meant’ to be doing/they’re both only participating in this to keep up appearances

they seem to like each other less and less as the seasons go on - of course in s1 at the beginning mike is only using her to get to will (otherwise he would’ve given her to his mum like he originally planned) and el latches onto him as the first person (apart from benny rip </3) she forms a connection with outside of the lab, then in s2 el is barely there, and s3 … we talked about that travesty of a relationship situation. only making out or fighting. yeah. then we get s4, they’re actively lying to each other about the most mundane things, having arguments/disagreements constantly, and do not support one another at all. i do think they have great promise as a friendship, but i think that’ll take a while because they literally don’t know each other - shown both in s3 (mike has NO idea about anything she likes when trying to buy her a gift) and in s4 (the monologue. he has virtually nothing to say about her as a person other than the fact that she has powers) this is also the first feature he brings up about her in most situations (his and dustin’s whose-girlfriend-is-the-best fight, the milkvan ILY fight)

i also think he’s holding on so tightly to a relationship that’s clearly failing because he doesn’t want to lose the stability/excuse he has in el. ie if he's in a relationship with a girl, no one will accuse him of being gay (& he doesn’t have to really face it himself? even though he knows already)

and then there’s the obvious one - he can’t be around el and will at the same time because he views them in similar ways - el as the girlfriend-but-not-really and will as the friend-but-almost-more. they’re both in that in between category, which is why mike clashes a lot with the people in his life (specifically el & will) over this

mike is emotionally cheating on el with will. he doesn’t (& never once has) turned to el for comfort, or chased her down in the rain after a fight. he’s at most looked vaguely inconvenienced by their arguments. will on the other hand is ALL of these. mike finds comfort and advice in will, especially concerning his relationship, and is significantly more impacted when will is upset with him rather than el

to this point, mike has shouted at both el and will (i’m thinking of rink o’ mania and rain fight here specifically), but after ro’m he was passive-aggressive and annoyed with el (for interrupting his fight with will? because he’s blaming her for the fact that he’s using her to replace will?) whereas after the rain fight like i said before he literally drags lucas to the byers’ house in the rain desperately to apologise

imagery/parallels

milkvan are consistently paralleled to st*ncy, aka a couple the show has made VERY clear are toxic & unhealthy. conversely byler are then paralleled to jancy, lumax, etc - the healthy, likely endgame ships

everyone’s aware of the robin/vickie/vickie’s boyfriend and mike/el/will parallel, and i know in this example will is in the same position as robin, but mike is paralleled to robin more often. even down to the composition of rockie shots vs byler shots, mike is always in robin’s position - the observer, wishing for a relationship with the other person who they believe is disinterested (vickie’s boyfriend, will’s very not real ‘painting girl’). the best one here, though, is in music. the song that plays in the scene when robin comes out to steve (‘being different’) is also the song that plays when el kisses mike at the end of s3. and both times it start off soft and then pick up when the kiss happens/robin comes out

this follows on to my next point: set decor especially re closets. that end of s3 kiss happens in front of an open closet (in a room with yellow walls), and mike has a ‘one way’ sign pointing into his closet in his s4 bedroom (which has a yellow shirt visible). i think this is pretty obvious imagery, closets and will’s colour present in ‘milkvan moments’ - in s3 obviously there’s the uncomfortable kiss, and in s4 he’s reading el’s letter - show he’s using his relationship with el as a way to hide, and his true thoughts/feelings are about will hence the presence of his colour in their scenes. also in the s3 scene he keeps his eyes open and looks visibly uncomfortable with the situation, and in s4 el is blatantly lying to him, all presenting a very flawed/untruthful relationship

this is kind of a minor one but all the posters in mike’s room are of extremely buff men - not a woman in sight lmfao

also in s4 it’s been said mike is trying to emulate eddie in his outfits, but i also believe he was being encouraged by eddie to be more himself. since (via handkerchief coding, joe quinn’s very homosexual acting, and general context clues) i believe eddie is also gay, i think mike being somewhat influenced by eddie to be more authentic is why s4 is the first season we see him really allow himself his feelings towards will. even to openly check him out in front of other people and to flirt with him

el, mike, and will as a trio are often staged as a three, with mike in the middle (classically obvious love triangle set up) but also ST adores love triangles. like. adores them. steve/nancy/jonathan, dustin/max/lucas, hopper/joyce/bob. and every single time, person A realises they don’t reciprocate (or not as much) person B’s feelings, and form a deeper more emotional connection to person C. also what love triangle ever has ever been resolved by person A staying with their original love interest??

finally, the lighting/framing of byler shots. now i know very little about filmmaking, so if you’re interested in this in depth i suggest you check out @dinitride-art ‘s excellent series of analysis posts. I do just want to point out that mike POV shots (over his shoulder) when he’s looking at will are often filled with light, will is framed beautifully, and overall they’re the most stunning shots

okay that’s all for now! i really enjoyed writing a long mike post again lol

btw i’d just like to say - the reason i don’t believe mike is bi is because i think it would invalidate both his and el’s storylines. the reason milkvan don’t work as a couple is because they’re not compatible in that way and also they don’t like each other romantically (or at least mike doesn’t). if he did like her, and was just deliberately inconsiderate/emotionally cheating/etc, that would just make him a mean character, and make byler endgame less satisfying if the milkvan breakup is presented as will’s fault and not the fault of mike just. not liking el like that. ofc the way they treat each other still isn’t okay, but like i said before i think without that romantic pressure, they’d have a great relationship as friends. :)

In this day and age, the one thing we can rely on is American award shows being fucking rubbish. A hidden cabal of old white men giving their friends unnecessary validation while women, people of colour and anyone in a horror or sci-fi movie are regularly ignored.

I mean let’s face it, award shows as a concept were rendered pointless when Toni Collette was given nothing for Hereditary. Let’s see Bradley Cooper on his hands and knees heaving with grief after finding his headless daughter in the family car. Yeah, good luck with that.

Anyway, the standard thing that comes along with all this nonsense is celebrities spending all manner of millions of dollars on the outfits they wear on this night of nights. Or multiple nights of nights rather, since there seems to be 40,000 award shows in America.

Most of the outfits are tedious or ridiculous. Every so often, like once in a blue moon, comes along a person who consistently makes you sit up queer and realise you need to sort your life out because how can there be someone who looks that good on the same planet as a gutter monster like me.

And that person this year my friends, is Bella Ramsey.

Forget about ruffles or tuxedos or backless dresses or any of that tired decades-old stereotypes that people wear to these events. Bella’s out here moving fashion forward and dragging us all into the future. They’re TELLING you where fashion should be heading and we should all feel ashamed for not paying attention.

To back up their incredible performance in The Last of Us by being an effortless non-binary fashion icon is worth all the hours of trash that doesn’t culminate in Bottoms winning Best Picture of The Year.

The shoes, the combination of colour palettes and perfect lines scream “Fuck all y’all” without even saying it. By osmosis, we all realise the voids in our lives hours later and only by the grace of whatever gods we pray to that we realise, probably on our deathbeds, that this shuddering introspection was brought about Bella’s couture.

As we reach our twilight years, surrounded by our loved ones as the tubes breathe for us and we feel the last few breaths leave our lungs, do we look over to the window that lets the dying of the light inside our hearts.

It’s in this moment that, along with the single tear rolling down our cheek, do we realise Bella Ramsey’s style in 2024 was the only human achievement that mattered during our brief time on this planet.

Holy shit. Hell yeah I will!

It’s a tad bit confusing, but originally she’s just a girl from our world that wakes up in the show, and while trying to explain how she got there (through a lot of lying and bending the truth, she accidentally writes herself into the show) ((don’t ask me how, fanfic magic or something))

So Addie=girl from human world

Adelaide=girl from the show

But they’re both the same person, if that makes sense. (And she’s totally not me, that would be silly 🤭)

Adelaide’s lore is still under construction in my mind, but the bits I’ve come up with are:

-She comes from an island off the cost of the Uk, called Bayti.

-Her family are the royal family for said island, following an ancient civil war between the two clans that inhabited the island (The Beorna clan and The Shocklach clan)

-Her family consists of:

•King Byron

•Queen Minerva

•Prince Stuart (oldest, but not allowed to be king)

•Prince Alden (also not allowed to be king)

•Prince Joseph (Low-key doesn’t want to be king, bro cba)

•Princess Adelaide (Technically next in line, but is unaware of that)

•Princess Rihannon (Girlie pop has no idea what’s going on half the time, but it’s okay cus she’s cute 🫶) ((Totally not based on my sister))

-The head family of the Shocklach’s wanted to become a part of the British empire, but literally everyone else was like “no wtf” and so civil war.

-Beorna clan won, specifically Adelaide’s ancestors, and they were appointed as leader, which eventually developed into a monarchy.

-After the civil war, the Beorna clan were civil enough to allow the Shocklach’s to stay on the island, and after a couple of centuries it was assumed no one really cared anymore.

-But some decedents of the “we wanna be colonised” Shocklach’s were still a bit miffed about how things had gone. They weren’t happy with the fact that the Beorna’s had let them stay, or that they had no qualms against the Shocklach people being aristocrats that regularly mingled with the royal family… One family in particular wanted to replaced the current royal family.

-Mallory, a lady in waiting of Adelaide’s, and a girl who Adelaide considered a friend, was one of said Shocklach people who wanted to replace the royals.

-Mallory concocts a plan to get rid of the royals one by one, starting with Adelaide because Adelaide actually trusts her. So Mallory gets Adelaide shipped off to South America, which is how she ends up in Peru 🫶

-Mallory’s plan doesn’t work tho, and by the end of the events of the show, Adelaide’s mum and her fav brother Joseph show up at Kuzco’s palace like “Yo, heard you got my kid, can I have her back?”

I haven’t thought about what to do after that, but yeah.

BUT. In the last episode of season one, she is in effected by Kuzco’s wish, mainly because she isn’t from that universe, but also for plot purposes. And so, Kuzco finds out that she isn’t from his world. So when Minerva and Joseph show up at the end of season 2, they’re both as equally confused.

That’s all I can recall from the top of my head rn, I’m currently on a bus lmao, but seeing as people are actually interested, I’ll leave my wattpad username at the end, and I’ll quickly go publish the few chapters I have finished. (I wasn’t joking about the 101 drafts, I have a problem)

the way there’s so much to say about how the bridgerton fandom acts towards shonda and even now, jess, the new showrunner, yet CVD (the previous MALE showrunner) got no flack for those first two seasons, season 1 w/ that specific scene between simone and daphne or for season 2, the lack of screentime for kate/anthony or the lack of background for kate or the lack of family/sisterhood…why is it that the two women get the most flack. mind you, they’re on jess’s ass and they have yet to see her season… questioning her decisions because she’s being too vague for them as any showrunner would be and deciding she doesn’t know what she’s doing or it’ll be terrible, ooc writing for everyone when they haven’t seen the season yet…

Yeah these women get way more flack than that man.

I’m personally on the fence about Jess and I admit I don’t like how vague she’s being. However, I believe everyone should be given the chance to prove themselves, so I’m reserving my judgment until I find out if Benedict’s season is next and who is playing Sophie.

I can also kind of see why she’s being vague about the whole thing.

This isn’t Marvel or even GOT, but Benophie is an extremely popular couple. This should’ve been their season and yet they were skipped over in favor of Polin(I’m pretty sure they moved them up because they wanted to throw a white ship in there).

So with that in mind Sophie news might overshadow things and while I’m the furthest thing from a Polin stan it is their season 🤷🏽‍♀️

Furthermore I don’t want that ships stans next year yapping about how they were “wronged” and trying to turn Benophies season into Polin 2.0 so I’m good with the radio silence(for now).

We shall all have our day in the sun(and I can only hope it’s as beautiful as QC cause that’s the gold standard for me).

Now as for Shonda, is she perfect? No, believe me, I have had my gripes with this woman. I have had a love hate relationship with her since 2013(Scandal was a roller coaster).

She is for all intents and purposes kooky. She likes to put her characters through a lot. She can be petty, and clearly has her favorites(Penelope), but some of the accusations thrown her way make 0 sense.

I’m not trying to dismiss anybody and I’m not trying to be insensitive because we all have our faves and we all want them to shine.

My faves(Benophie) were literally skipped over and we still don’t have an exact confirmation they are next, we still don’t know who Sophie is. My second faves might be getting screwed over too(I’m not getting into it, but Francesca deserves her man) so I get it. However, some of you are all the way wrong.

Shonda has made some interesting choices, but people need to give her more credit because the reality is that Bridgerton as it exists in the show wouldn’t have happened without her.

The Bridgerton books are not diverse at all(and Julia Quinn has said some really fucked up shit to the point where Shonda should’ve adapted a Black authors work and never given that woman a larger platform, but I digress)

Simon isn’t a Black man. Kate and her family definitely aren’t Indian. Sophie is a white blonde woman. Queen Charlotte isn’t even in the books and if she did exist in them she would be white (like in reality).

Lady Danbury is white. The Stirlings are white Scott’s. The Mondrichs don’t exist. New characters like Harry Dunkworth and Lord Samadani do not exist and if they did they wouldn’t be part Asian or Persian.

I can imagine that in the furture Lucy will be played by a non-white woman(if y’all want an Asian lead it’s her) and Gareth will at least be biracial(he’s Lady Danburys grandson). In the books both are white.

Hell, Penelope’s glow up consists of her getting skinner so even Nicola doesn’t fully embody her book counterpart.

Gay people are barely touched upon(no disrespect but this is why turning these ships into queer romances won’t work) and the books as a whole are mediocre at best.

It will never be perfect, but Shonda and co. have managed to turn something no different than all the rest of these crappy regency romance books into a highly entertaining diverse show. It’s because of her vision that Bridgerton is as colorful as it is and might I argue has provided a platform for things like Mr. Malcolm’s List and The Davenports to be greenlit.

I dont want to praise this show and the creators too much, and yes there are problems with Bridgerton (for me it’s the lack of monoracial Black leads getting their HEA which is why I hope Masali is indeed Sophie), but the hate at this time is a bit much.

Being best friends with the pogues was great

You’re all like family, and you might be struggling but you’re struggling together

One particular drawback of being a pogue is that once you had had enough of not knowing why some things are so hard for you

And you finally started researching why you’re like this

Why you struggle with things that no one else bats an eyelash at

Why one piece of media consumes your entire life for a period of time, then you totally forget it exists, then the obsession comes back with a vengeance

Why you’re so fucking sensitive

And bad at school in spite of genuinely trying your literal hardest

Why you’ve been drinking coffee and energy drinks since middle school

You came to the conclusion that you probably have adhd

The drawback is that getting a diagnosis isn’t a possibility in any way shape or form

At least right now

You know you’ll probably just have to get through high school then figure out how to try and get tested or get a diagnosis after you graduate and are an adult

Which sucks

But what else can you do?

You don’t have a fraction of the privilege kooks have, some of them even have doctors for parents

They do adderall for fun, you need it to make your bed and brush your teeth consistently

So yeah that’s pretty shitty

You decided to stay away from trying to get any kind of meds or drugs under the counter, since caffeine can work the same way

You figure it’s safer to stick with your beloved coffee and energy drinks

It also clicked that those times when you felt like caffeine is a placebo or you’re just so tired that it’s not doing anything

Nope

Turns out you just have a dopamine deficiency lol

So over time you fell down the rabbit hole of adhd research

You found out all the other bizarre things you’ve been doing are actually signs and symptoms

Needing a tv show to play at night or you can’t sleep, having literally no sense of time, getting “upset over nothing” and feeling like someone hates you when a joke isn’t as well received as you expect or when you try to tell someone something and they’re not really paying attention

Yeah that last one (your least favorite) even has a name!!

It’s RSD aka rejection sensitive dysphoria and it’s a real bitch!!

You end up not telling anyone you’re pretty sure you have adhd

Even the pogues

Mostly because part of your brain is worried about how they’ll react

And if you got RSD from that it would be a literal nightmare to deal with

So you decide to keep it to yourself

For now at least

The thing is, the more research you do

The more you notice similar traits and symptoms in JJ

Just like with you, everything that looks like a personality flaw is actually a glaring sign of undiagnosed neurodivergence

With a better understanding of yourself and (most likely) of what JJ’s also going through

You start to understand each other a little better

It’s like you’re speaking the same language yk

This earned you the nickname “the JJ whisperer” very quickly

You can draw his attention away from something that should not have his attention

By bringing up something else that should not have his attention

But the second thing isn’t dangerous/harmful

So it counts as a good distraction

You and JJ will talk at the speed of light

And you conversations will make no sense to anyone but you two

Because you both understand each others dolphin brains

At one point everyone you can tell he’s stressing

You lay down flat on the floor, patting the ground next to you

The rest of the pogues watch in amazement as he sighs, lays on the ground next to you, and almost instantly chills out

“This is just such a stupid thing to argue about, I hate fighting with you guys”

No one knows what magic you work on him or why it’s so much easier to articulate his thoughts and feelings during floor time

Sometimes the other pogues join you for floor time too

Also what are your thoughts on fics giving the Girls (or any other characters with no last names) last names. I understand it’s easier for tagging reason, but I never understand the need to give them one, even Craig never bothered on canonizing their last names to be “Utonium” and everytime I read “Blossom Utonium” in or “Ms Utonium” in fics I immediately closed the fic, regardless of how good it is, or if its good, I blocked it with my finger

Look, I don’t know what to tell ya, but:

…now TO BE FAIR, you’re right: I checked my DVDs because I thought I was going crazy and it’s listed as a S4 episode there. But if you look at how it’s animated, it’s definitely got that post movie S5 look. …so, you know what, despite it maybe officially being S4, I don’t know. Let’s say it’s in S4-S5 limbo because it has those same weird pacing/writing issues bleeding into it that the other S5 episodes have. 🤣

I’m completely fine with the last names thing for the girls. Blossom and the girls are Professor Utonium’s daughters! They’re a family! Fans have been giving them his last name forever and I find it endearing. Plus… it’s a whoooooole lot better than giving them the last name “Powerpuff.” 🥴 Even though it isn’t canon, their last name just seems like a very small thing to be picky about, especially since it at least makes logical sense.

…but I get that because I’m picky about the other part of your question: giving other characters last names. And it’s something that I’m pretty consistent about with when it comes to any fandom. If there’s a fanfic and the author is writing a scenario where the character needs a last name… sometimes people just pick really terrible ones that don’t match the tone of the show or make any sense within canon. With the Powerpuff Girls, it’s a goofy show, and a lot of the characters have punny or funny last names (some don’t never need last names), but then you’ll read a fic and there’s, say, some scene where the girls are checking out the police file for “Sedusa Adela Richards” and you’re like… huh? Where’d that come from? When in doubt, I would just write something vague, like maybe the girls are looking at Sedusa’s criminal record and one of them comments on how weird her real last name is, but they don’t actual say what it is. Because you’re right, that kind of stuff can pull you right out of the story if it doesn’t make sense.

And, oh man, it happens with first names, too! The Professor has had a couple of weird fanon first names that just don’t… fit. At this point, it’s just so weird to call him anything other than Professor as his first name. But yeah. I guess the only other instance I can think of about the last names thing is for the RRB, but I think they’re cringe anyway, so when I see “Brick Jojo” or something I immediately click away because I know it’s going to be something I will not enjoy (also Mojo Jojo is technically Mojo’s FULL first name, so like… that makes less sense than giving the girls’ the Professor’s actual last name). 😆

Raph and Mikey are twins n the oldest bc why not

They’ve got a slightly messier dynamic w each other bc twins are like that but with their younger siblings they’re a little more consistent

Mikey’s the hype man, the comforter, the “hey, it’s gonna be okay. c’mon, let’s go get you a Barbie bandaid and some stickers.” So very full of love

Raph’s a little more gruff like “…good job, kid”noogies and stuff uhh yeah

be very careful when Raph cries or Mikey gets pissed. both are extremely rare and indicative of a very serious situation. (Often Raph crying is what sets off Mikey)

so so I’m thinking Raph actually has anxiety (may haps??) and sort of converts those nerves into anger bc that’s easier for him to deal w. He hates feeling like a coward (maybe when he was little he ran away from smth important and vowed to never be afraid again) so he hates backing down from anything n can be very reckless. His main character arc would probably be learning that fear and courage aren’t mutually exclusive, and that acknowledging and accepting fear is a kind of courage in and of itself. Also being able to back out of something if it freaks him out.

uhh then Mikey’s actually the one with anger issues lmao (maybe??) he tries to hard to keep everyone positive bc his little brothers and twin rely on him to lift everyone up. He’s always trying to cheer people up n make sure everyone’s having fun and feeling supported. He hates hates hates any of his brothers being sad or hurt or upset, so he tries to keep them as happy and carefree as he can. (They’re already missing out on so many normal aspects of childhood, he wants to preserve what he can) He’s what keeps them afloat, so he never allows himself to be heavy. He shoves down his anger and messy feelings until he literally can’t anymore and then he goes deep into the sewers and like idk violently paints or screams or smth. His arc would probably be that it’s ok to not be happy, and to show that. Kinda like rise Raph’s whole thing abt relying on his brothers as they rely on him, but like,,, emotionally. He’s still a very cheerful, positive person, but he learns that having negative emotions and showing it is okay. I’m not sure any of this makes sense lmao

Uhhhh

Donnie the ultimate middle child (rip) craves validation like there’s no tomorrow, seriously it’s insane. The main reason he makes all his crazy tech stuff is bc he loves it when his family compliments his work. Dunno abt his main personality that’s more open to interpretation uhh. His arc would be about not only knowing he’s valued no matter what, but to value himself as well. Not attaching his entire self-esteem and self-confidence to what other people say, being able to take pride in himself. Idk.

Leo is a funny goofy silly little guy who’s always trying so so hard to catch up to his brothers. His brother Raph is so strong and tough and always knows what to do and Mikey is so nice and creative and funny, and Donnie is so smart and he does all these cool things and knows everything about everything. Leo’s just…. Leo. It’s frustrating for him, when his family praises his (idk) uhhh doodles or whatever the same way they praise Donnie’s projects because he knows it’s just because he’s the littlest and they don’t want to hurt his feelings. Nothing he does is really that special. (He’s jealous of Donnie for his many talents, being able to earn his brothers’ trust and pride. Donnie’s jealous of Leo because he gets all the love and affection Donnie wants without even really trying. Obviously this is mostly deeply buried bc they get along okay and really do love each other, but could be a reason for conflict n bickering often w that underlying tension) His arc could be some stuff about how you don’t have to be really really good at one thing in order to be an important member of the team. (It’s never been about being loved/valued bc he knows he is, it’s about earning it. Proving himself and truly deserving their pride and trust) and idk stuff surrounding that (I’m not a youngest child idk what goes on in their brains)

Much like last book, anything that doesn’t get its own dedicated post is going into this brain dump post.

Big Picture

Overall flow

This book was a slog from the jump, mainly because how it ended made the prospect of 14 episodes building to that finale daunting

In retrospect, with the entire season finshed, I can say the first six episodes, despite their flaws are “better.” Even though I had such a difficult time watching those on a consistent basis.

I better understand why the “Beginnings” two parter is such a breath of fresh air on the whole for so many people. Even if it does introduce Vaatu, and with him begin the slide in story quality.

But really, there was a precipitous drop in the last two episodes of the book.

Also remember how I said this show had a cast size management problem? Well here’s where it starts worsening. We drop Tarrlok, Amon and Hiroshi… but keep Korra and the rest of the Krew, Tenzin and his family and Lin. Then add Korra’s family, expand Tenzin’s family with Kya II and Bumi II, plus Varrick…

Korra’s spirituality arc:

I- don’t have much to say here

I thought I would, but I don’t

There’s remarkably little to say

Which is odd for an arc that’s supposed to be about rounding out Korra’s knowledge and understanding of spirits and spirituality

Themes:

The big thing that jumps at me is identity, which Tenzin embodied well. Shame more of that didn’t completely trickle down to Korra

Character opinions

Korra: I’m kind of frustrated and underwhelmed, but less with Korra herself and more how her arc has been handled, and going to be handled going forward

Mako: I came into this season expecting to hate Mako more than I did in book 1, but that didn’t happen. He, his romance subplots not withstanding, was fine. In fact, his police work storyline was a relative bright spot.

Bolin: frustrates me immensely. Had a good moment or two in this season, but at this point I despise how he’s written.

Asami: she has some good moments, but she’s hurt by barely getting anything to do. In a sense, she’s the Krew’s Toph in terms of having no arc

Tenzin: I’m a little stuck for what to say, here. I guess I don’t hate what they did with him? He does bring up the question of how airbending and spirituality work, but that’s another story.

Bumi II: I don’t hate him, but I don’t particularly like him either.

Kya II: favorite new addition this season. She doesn’t get too much to do, but she more often than not holds the familial brain cell

Lin: poor Lin. She spends most of the season playing disbelieving boss for Mako’s Cassandra storyline. I still love you tho

Tonraq: meh.

Unalaq: an absolute mess, but could’ve worked with a clearer sense of where they were going

Eska: don’t hate her but don’t care for her either. She did present a contrast for some franchise weirdness, though.

Desna: I was surprised by how much I liked him. Probably helps that he’s not weighed down by a terrible romance subplot like his sister

Varrick: he’s absolutely awful, amoral businessman and thrives in the role of self-interested schemer who helps when it’s to his benefit

Shipping

sigh yeah, I’m dedicating a section to the messes this time

Even if I wasn’t big on Makorra, the way it’s handled is such a mixed bag. On one hand, when their break up happens mid season, I could see where both of them were coming from. But there are several points of their relationship that feel like they’re written with this air of “women, amirite?” When Mako is having difficulty understanding what Korra wants or needs at the moment

And that’s before getting to the whole amnesia element… 😒

But then I’m not really against or for Masami. They can be cute together, but the way the decided to have them get back together, kinda, felt weird. Then they torpedo that too…

Do I have to comment on Boleska? It was bad, just bad. Made worse by trying to have Bolin get back together with her at the end of the season.

Looking at Varrick and Zhu Li’s dynamic in book 2, and looking forward to the finale, they’re really going to try to pass this off as romance?

Stray observations

Asami and Bolin are actually a good duo and them hanging out before Bolin got swallowed by his dumb plots for the season was nice

Despite generally not caring for the Beginnings two-parter, I did come to find myself coming around on them. I still didn’t think it was a necessary story but it’s well told for what it is.

Also there’s something about Raava saying “we will be together for all of your lifetimes” that just hits

In “The Guide,” Tenzin brags about the garden at the Eastern Air Temple being the very one that Aang trained with Guru Pathik in. So that’s apparently public knowledge? Oh okay

Why is Unalaq working for Vaatu?

(No really, why is Unalaq working for Vaatu?!)

Despite all my grievances with Bolin’s handling for the book, there’s something wonderfully poetic about Varrick’s plan unraveling due to that “knucklehead earthbender” he underestimated

At the end of the season, the level of detail for my notes plummeted. Around “Darkness Falls.” I basically gave up.

But I also find it interesting that there’s the decision at the end of whether or not to leave the spirit portals, when Korra is presented with an opportunity to that no other Avatar was: to stop being the Avatar. But there’s not even a debate there, she just wants to reunite with Raava and try to regain her connection to her past lives.

Mind, the “leave the spirit portals open” idea has a lot of ways that it should backfire

The franchise never going to get to deal with the can of worms that Korra’s successor 10,000 years in the future will have both Raava and Vaatu inside them, will it?

From what time I’ve read, this was the most hellish season of either show to finish. It took from May 2011 for the writing process to begin to November 11, 2013 to finish mixing the final episode, which then aired 11 days later.

And on a personal note, gathering my thoughts on this season was much harder than with the first.

It’s been like pulling teeth to try say what I wanted to about this

entirely against my will i am a teeny-tiny bit fully obsessed with 1899 -- meta-adjacent thoughts below the cut. spoilers through the entire first season. i have seen very little meta for this show so this is probably not innovative or anything but i wanted to put it out there if only for posterity

first off i have to admit that i am extremely extremely skeptical of this type of convoluted puzzle-box scifi. they’re very compelling to me especially at the beginning but i don’t think most of them are anywhere as smart as they’d like to appear. well-made as dark was, i didn’t find the ending particularly satisfying, and this show seems to be in a very very similar vein. i LOVE 1889 so far -- it’s so stylish and fun to watch, the characters and their relationships are incredible, the mysteries have completely drawn me in -- but i don’t have super high expectations for the eventual resolution. that being said i will be happy as long as it stays bonkers. which i think is EXTREMELY likely.

probably an obvious one, but i’m definitely thinking the 2099 spaceship is probably another layer of the simulation, not the final reality. that prediction is mostly because it seems to make more structural sense -- this show is pretty heavy-handedly concerned with the nature of reality, and a multi-layered simulation would play into that. from what i gleaned from dark it’s also stylistically consistent (ie as convoluted as possible i say this with great affection).

the other big theory ive heard is that daniel isn’t real. i agree and i’d go further and say that i don’t think any of maura’s family (daniel, eliot, henry, ciaran) are literal people -- none of them are present aboard the ship in 2099 (except ciaran; i don’t have enough info to say what the fuck is going on there but i would say he’s probably not a human person). maybe this is too hokey but i’m wondering if they’re somehow representations of maura’s own self. it doesn’t make sense to me that maura created the simulation to keep eliot from dying -- why would she erase her memory of him and daniel if it was borne of an obsessive desire to keep living together as a family? also, maura is very explicitly not driven by emotion. desperation and grief can definitely make people do uncharacteristic things, yeah, but there’s such an intentional focus on that aspect of her personality, and that feels like an indicator that henry is lying. if he created the simulation, though, why would he be in it himself? i don’t think either maura’s theory or henry’s is entirely true -- i get the feeling maura made the simulation, but not for the reasons henry suggests.

the logistics of daniel and eliot don’t make a ton of sense to me (why do they remember, how does daniel control the simulation from within, what does it mean that they used the prometheus to “gain access”) and i’m not really sure whether those things are intentional and will be revealed or if they’re hand-wavey plot devices.

similarly i’ve had the thought that maybe everyone onboard is a fabrication -- since i’m solidly of the belief that 2099 is not a final reality either, anything is possible -- and that maura has trapped herself in the simulation either to examine her own mind or escape from reality. i’ve decided that it’s unlikely, though, because of how omniscient the show’s perspective is. it would be very jarring if the characters turned out to be unreal, considering how often and deeply they interact among each other without maura present at all. also, the memories would be pointless if they were just parts of a constructed person. the only way it would make sense, i think, would be if they were all also representations of maura’s self, but that seems too far out even for these guys, and also not really all that interesting. plus it would be a bummer imo.

i’m curious about the statement that everyone aboard the kerberos agreed to enter the simulation to escape their own pain -- they very clearly did NOT escape their pain. it’s literally under the floorboards. the whole situation is very compelling to me -- it’s half-therapy, half-torture. are the memories real ones altered to be plausibly turn-of-the-century, or are they completely fabricated? because the simulation does seem to be at least partially a kind of psychological experiment, i doubt they’re completely out of nowhere, but i genuinely have no idea to what degree they’re based in reality.

finally and most importantly i would like eyk and maura to kiss. thank you for reading
