I never did find out what that key that was their "gift" went to. A golden skeleton key tied to my wrist by a long and thin blue ribbon. I haven't seen it in my dreams in years. Not since the night Puck "escorted" me out of their realm and we took a rest on the fey side of that gate.

It was tied to my wrist at the meeting, but hidden by the long sleeves of the formal messenger robe I was wearing. And when the messenger declared my standing welcome, the key suddenly felt heavier. It's the first time I have seen the key since my removal from their lands.

Back then (back there), Puck took my word that I would never attempt entry into the fey lands (and that one fey in particular) without them as escort. They were insistent upon taking that word from me even if it meant violence to extract it. There has been many times I have requested their escort to do this, that, or the other, and they have declined to accompany me. Each time Puck denies me, I keep the word that was taken, and abort the mission.

I know that neither Puck nor that Fey Queen are the embodiment of the names they are using. I know that Puck "serves" that Fey Queen because it amuses them to do so. But the more I learn of the fey, the more I realize how little I know of Puck and that Fey Queen.

There was a matter concerning me at the Human Court. I knew that there were some there who saw my presence as a liability, as a weakness. There were those who wanted to take advantage of my connections, of those to whom I have been tied, and my refusal to yield that control was seen by some as treachery.

The message I was to bring to the fey messenger waiting for me was a veiled threat in coded language that would go over the head of any untouched human. But I had decoded it on the spot and knew that any fey who heard it would be justified to take the head of the one speaking it, regardless if the speaker was part of the problem or not. Fey Honor would demand that response from the receiving fey.

However, it's been a long time since I have spoken of my duties as a Courier™. Once I agree to bear a message, it must be borne regardless of consequences. I knew I was walking into a trap that at first, I thought was set by human hands. Apparently not.

So when the messenger spoke the message before I could, they relieved me of the impetus to say the thing because the impetus was for the thing to be said in my hearing regardless of who said it. They spoke the veiled threat to a human to whom the threat carried no harm, and so we both could now sit and remain at peace.

Relatively, anyway.

Because the key is now present again. And the gates are open to me again. And that Fey Queen has their attention towards me again.

And I am questioning the timing of everything.
