re: prev post about sambal belacan, my favourite story is one my dad tells about when he first came to canada for university in the 70s and he befriended the 2 other malaysian international students at the school (a chinese guy & a tamil guy) and the 3 of them tried to make it from scratch by roasting the paste in the oven in one of their apartments cos you couldn't buy it in canada back then, and their white neighbours were so alarmed by the smell they called the cops on them thinking they had a rotting corpse in their apartment and they had to explain to the police that it was just malaysian fermented shrimp paste roasting lol

#fave because belacan really does smell that potent but also fav bc calling the cops for that is such a classic white people moment #avg msian vs avg white canadian in the 1970s #like. youre really gonna call the fucking police cause some asian uni students are cooking something smelly in your vicinity... bffr

at my uni (not in Norway to be clear) we speak Norwegian half of the time, but even when we speak in our mother tongue we still use 'pålegg', it's such a handy word

Followers from slovenia portugal and germany how is the social culture around trans people where you live? And if you know, how easy would it be to get prescriptions transfered from overseas?

After speaking to one of my relatives from europe over christmas/hanukkah this year im uh,, seriously considering a major life change. Theres nothing really for what i want to do where i am and with what i have but if i could get into one of the grad schools that accepts foreigners for free overseas and get my masters and potentially a phd i could have a REAL shot at my more ambitious dreams

And like,, im 24 years old with no dependents. Whats stopping me? It would be a hell of a lot of work balancing going back to school and supporting myself independently in a foreign country but hey, i basically did that for my undergrad and i was fine. I got honours with distinction! I can do it again!

#maybe whats putting me in this slump is that i havent *finished* my credentials #and kinda jumped the gun on leaving higher education to pursue independence #id have student loans from canada to pay off still but thats why im emphasizing free universities cmdbkd #i have my ivy league certifications already i can only go up by getting multiple countries under my belt #especially if i wanna go into more IR stuff in the future #opens up a whole new world of opportunities #im also totally 100% willing to go through intensive language courses if necessary #ill probably never get rid of my western canadian accent while speaking because i cant when i speak dutch but #i think fluency matters more than smoothness #so foreign language unis are not off the table for me #shut up dames

in the past i’d get whiplash over how much things haven’t changed and how frustrating that is and today i’m reading all these articles on cafes and shops in old strathcona in the 90s and this is dating myself certainly but the fact that i read things like “oh yeah this is the first non-smoking tim hortons in alberta and the second in western canada!” makes me double take so much

#lets do some math here. im applying to 5 programs for a phd and i have 2 degrees that i have to send out as official transcripts #so that's already like 30 dollars per school. so 150 basline. plus application fees #the 1st uni i applied to had no fee. the canadian one is 125 Canadian dollars so 95 usd #then 38 dollars for one us uni and fucking 70 dollars for the other us uni #and idk if the last uni has a fee but it would prob be like 25 pounds so 30 usd #so thats what fucking #353 dollars assuming the last uni doesn't have a fee. jesus. #the fucking 70 dollar one fucking gets me tho but that application is also the most fucking annoying one. u have to individually input a #bunch of info rather than just submitting a cv. fucking stupid #and its like. they might not even accept me so like wtf #one school is wanky and prestigious. another program is highly competitive bc its for only one position. another i wont kno if the lab has #the funding for a student until like april. and then idk abt the us schools. the 70 dollar one is also fuck off kinda prestigious #but the other seems kinda more chill? so idk i just want to b accepted somewhere pls. #also i need to ask for letters of recommendation. its so annoying. in the uk and Canada they only want 2 but in the us its 3 #ugh. ill b so glad when this bullshit is over with #at this point idk where i want to go really. they all have pros and cons. the canadian would b kinda rad bc i would b an international #students but also not very far from where i grew up and i miss the snow and the trees a lot. its literally like 3hrs from where i did my #undergrad lmao. oh god i shouldnt think abt it like that or it might dissuade me from going there lol #idk idk idk the us schools would prob give me the most info school wise bc rhe us system is kinda brutal #and i could fuck around forever and establish nasa connections. but idk i also wanna go back to the uk #even tho i would b a huge pain in the ass with all the visa bullshit. ugh. whatever it doesnt even matter rn #bc no one has accepted me yet #unrelated

When the new boygenius songs dropped I was eating dinner with my grandparents. I made excuses I think I told them I was feeling ill and went home as quick as possible. I literally fucking ran. Literally nothing else on the fucking planet mattered between finding out and getting to hear it. I got teary-eyed immediately, and then when Phoebe started screaming at the end of $20 I balled my fucking eyes out and I did not stop for like. Two hours. I came out of hearing those songs a different fucking person. Just like when I first heard Sprained Ankle. Just like when I heard Punisher. Just like when I saw boygenius in Toronto.

What I'm trying to say is that I am not going to be normal for the rest of this year, ESPECIALLY not when the album comes out. I am seriously considering trying to go to the States to see them live because I'm worried there won't be a UK boygenius tour

random rmu thought of the day is that it’s a big party school and it has a huge greek life program

#this is inspired by my school being a party school #and my university is one of the few unis in the country that has a fully integrated on campus greek program #and i want that for rmu sksksk #this started from me developing a football oc for rmu #my juyeon <3 #and i was thinking about my oc gage who is in apartmentverse or whatever we wanna call it now #he was a football star before getting injured and then addicted #originally i had him going somewhere in nyc #and he’s also friends with laurent brother 2 finn #then i realized that rmu is a private school and he could have gotten a scholarship even tho he’s from upstate ny #and the laurents are based out of montreal and nyc with us/canadian dual citizenship #but since the laurents love their winter sports they could totally have a home by rmu and all three laurent bros could have gone there #and teddy totally could have been on the hockey team #so that’s where gage and finn meet #and when gage drops out he goes home for a bit before getting back on his feet and moving to nyc #and it adds to his story of being across the country from his home and with fake friends and a heavy party scene #anyway if you’ve ready this far ily EKDKKD 💖 #*read #ellie chats
