I'm Robin, sometimes known as Wings! I'm a 36-year-old, queer, autistic, disabled mom of 2 humans and 5 senior rescue dogs, former R.N. & paramedic. I'm a hardcore fangirl and a proud fanfic writer (and reader), and while I know some people will judge me for that, I am not ashamed! I started writing as a hobby after becoming physically disabled and unable to work as an RN. Fanfic gave me an audience and an outlet, gifted me purpose and hope again. Transformative fiction is FUN! It fosters creativity and passion, heals wounds, and makes people happy. If someone wants to discredit me for that, then perhaps they aren't the audience I'm seeking.

Ultimately, I know I'm taking a risk, but since people seem to enjoy my fics, this book is my attempt to try and make ends meet through original fiction! I know some people WILL discredit me. But I'm always about being myself and speaking on what I feel matters: Fanfic should be legitimized as a creative medium. I assure you, friends—the thousands of hours I've spent on my fanworks are as REAL as it gets. The intersection of disparaging fanfic + sexism/misogyny can't be overstated—women (esp queer women)'s unpaid work is often treated as a "hobby," not worthy of uplifting. I'm here to uplift! The risk is worth it—I would have nothing without fanfic & I'm proud. Younger creators shouldn't feel shame about writing/reading fanfic. We should ALL approach it as a legitimate medium. In fact, MOST new media these days is transformative "fanwork" of SOME kind, whether it's inspired by, based on, or outright rebooting existing worlds.

Plus, we queer folk simply deserve to see our stories in the mainstream media and to see the characters we fall in love, identify with, and root for to get their happily ever afters.

What do you get when you mix a touch-starved, neurodivergent, career academic on a journey of self-discovery, a recently-disabled former soldier doing his best to save every last soul he meets (who refuses to admit that his injury has changed his life in the slightest), a dystopian road trip, coping skills that require safe words, and the persistent hold of a society that was irretrievably broken long before it finally collapsed?

The apocalypse hasn't seen anything, yet.

Or: The post-apocalyptic, reconstruction-era story about loving yourself first, featuring autistic adoptee Castiel trying to unravel his identity in a world that's already ended, and former soldier, current social worker, newly-disabled Dean who's built an entire new world for everyone else and still badly needs to redefine himself so that he can live in it.

Alpha Dean is on a long road to recovery after an accident ended his career as a firefighter. He had to sell his two-storey house for ranch style one, he's on a strict regimen of medications which are dulling his sense of smell, and no one wants a disabled Alpha with PTSD.

Then his new neighbour, Cas, moves in, and he seems interested.

Dean stepped out onto his back deck into the misty morning, dragging in a deep breath. As usual for the past six months or so, his meds blunted his sense of smell. He imagined it might be how a Beta felt. He stretched, sighing as the damp seemed to seep through his sweatpants and into his skin. Miracle was at his side, her furry warmth pressing against Dean's good leg for a moment, then the blond dog ran down the stairs onto the lawn. The sun was up, but Dean's backyard was still shaded by his house, and the early morning dew hadn't burnt off yet. He leaned forward against his railing, his favourite oversized coffee mug held securely in his hands, and contentedly sighed as he watched Miracle run around the yard. He chuckled as his dog found a knotted rope toy and shook it fiercely, growling even as her tail wagged. Dean wandered into the yard and scooped up a few toys that had been left on the grass the night before. Miracle was a great dog, but how she managed to spread tennis balls and Kong toys over the entire property was beyond Dean.

As he stumbled over yet another ball hidden in the grass, nearly dropping his mug, he swore softly.

"Shit! Damn dog!" It was meant affectionately, and he grinned as he scooped up the ball and lobbed it onto the deck. Miracle scampered after it, her claws scrabbling on the treated wood. Dean carefully flexed his bad knee, supported by a heavy brace under his sweats, and winced at the now familiar ache. If the damp continued, he'd be into his stronger painkillers, like it or not.

As he turned to scan the grass some more, he felt eyes on him and lifted his head. Dean's breath caught as he met the gaze of the gorgeous man standing in the next yard in a pair of running shorts and a black tank top that left his arms and shoulders bare. The wind was travelling from the wrong direction, over the houses and away through the yards; he couldn’t catch a scent. So he had no idea if the man was an Alpha like himself, a Beta, or even an Omega. With that build, the latter seemed unlikely. Dean wasn’t picky about designations, though. He liked what he liked. And this guy? This was the new neighbour? Hallelujah!

Twenty minutes of talking and all Dean had to show for it was a weird first name, a series of dour stares and the strangest need to know more about this – Castiel.

What Dean doesn’t know is that their whole trip will be documented by a photographer from the company - so to avoid their vacation being cut short, Dean and Cas will have to convincingly play a couple.

I have been an avid reader my whole life and it sucks I am losing my sight, but glad to have found podfics and audiobooks. I am a finale denier. I think what they did was a travesty and Jensen should get his chance to finish sharing his fix it with us. I hope and pray they get picked up. (reverse order of when i started reading them)

SUMMARY:

It’s doubtful that today’s Summoner is any sort of threat. Natural enemies aren’t something that Castiel is even aware of having at the current moment, and Hunters are rare in this day and age. The ones who persist and are privy to his existence should equally understand that challenging such a creature wouldn’t be productive (for them). No, Castiel suspects that the being on the other end of this spell wants what most beings want from him—a granted wish.

“My dad was a hunter,” Dean declares plainly. “Ain’t a single solitary soul on this planet hating what I do more than him. That man raised me to be his soldier, to kill creatures, not bend over for ‘em.” He pauses and winks, clicking his tongue against his teeth. “Big part of why I do it.” Somewhat nonchalantly, he stretches, reaching both arms high over his head and thus causing his t-shirt to ride up and expose a tantalizing bit of belly.

For once, Castiel’s hunger isn’t for blood or souls.
