Celtic beliefs in trees (20)
Q for Quert (Apple) - September 2nd - September 29th
“Fruit of love - 10th month of the Celtic Tree Calendar (Ref)”
Star: Venus: Gemstone: emerald,; Gender: female; Patrons: Gaia, Aphrodite, Venus, Hera, Pomona, Nemesis, Astarte, Ishtar, Ceridwen, Olwen, Gwen, Arwen, Shekhinah, Freyja, Iðunn; Symbols: faith + gratitude, love + trust, tolerance + Abundance, self-respect, the work of fate.
The original species of apple is the crab apple. The crab apple belongs to the rose family and has short, flower-bearing young branches with thorns. The fruits are firm, round, acidic and vary in colour from yellow to crimson. September is the apple month, when the flowers bloom in late spring, the sweet fragrance is released and the fruit ripens.
Hazel, oak and apple are all legendary magical fruits, and it is believed that the three fruits together will fulfil all the needs of life. Birch, alder, willow, oak, holly, hazel and apple are designated as sacred trees in ancient Irish law. Of these, the apple and hazel were especially considered sacred trees, so much so that anyone who deliberately cut them down was punished with death.
In classical Western mythology, the 'Paradise Island', a paradise of fruit trees, was thought to contain the Tree of Wisdom, which bore three sacred apples. It is important to remember here that the apple, the fruit of love, was the food of the Celtic gods and they ate apples.
The apple tree, a favourite parasite of mistletoe, was regarded as sacred, especially by druids (Ref2). According to Druidic teachings, holy drops from heaven spilled over into the cauldron of Ceridwen, and the three drops that splashed out of the cauldron became the source of wisdom for the three apples that grow on the Tree of Wisdom. These three drops symbolise the three pillars of the Tree of Life in the Hebrew mystical philosophy of Kabbalah. These three pillars represent the masculine and feminine principles respectively, with the central pillar representing the union of the two. These also coincide with the most sacred symbol of the Druids, the 'three rays', each representing the power of vision, the power to manipulate letters and symbols, and the power to understand them. These strange three drops can be seen as a spiritual energy that gives life energy to all living things.
Legend has it that the Otherworld is a magical land of thickly growing apple trees, and that visitors from the Otherworld often come to this world carrying apple branches. Wearing a piece of apple wood is said to bring about a loved one and a long life, and is an essential part of good luck charms and spells. Apple trees were often planted in gardens in the British Isles, as they were believed to protect the home and bring love to it.

It was supposed by the Celts [(which Celts??)] that the Spirits who lived in Willow Trees had the ability to grant wishes. A person merely had to ask permission of the willow and, whilst tying a loose knot in one of the shoots, speak their wish. When the wish is fulfilled, the same person should return and untie the knot. It was also advised, however, not to speak any secrets near a willow or it would be repeated to someone else.
Willows have ties to music both in Irish culture (where Harps are typically made from Willow wood, which is believed to inspire uncontrollable dancing) - and in Jewish culture (where Psalms 137 states that captive Jewish Harpists hanging their harps on the Willows along the River Babylon created the Weeping Willow).
In Yorkshire, England, it plays a role in marriage divination on Easter and New Years, when young women would throw their shoes into the branches, hoping to get them to stick within 9 attempts (symbolizing they shall be married that year)- and they can symbolize spurned or lost love, too, as in the same region any young man who was rejected wore a wreath of willow as a symbol of their lost love.
In Asia, however, it’s symbolic of the dead- being used in China to sweep the tombs and to ward off the Spirits of the Dead during the festival of Qingming; in Japan, Willows are associated with areas where Ghosts are commonly believed to appear.
Medicinally Willow is best known for its painkilling properties due to the prevalence of Salicin in its bark- typically used to make Aspirin. Boiled in a tea, it can produce similar effects, as well as being a remedy for rheumatism and fevers.

Congratulations on your milestone, Hazel! You absolutely deserve a 100 followers and it is always such a pleasure seeing you on my dash 💜💜💜
And I would love to join your event! Can you maybe do Kuroo + Hecate (she always seemed like such a cool, badass goddess)? Since Hecate is typically associated with the night, do you think you could maybe write a drabble where reader and Kuroo get into some fun late night shenanigans and they both realize their feelings for one another? Thank you!

Late Night Drives
WC: ~900 CW: nothing, this is straight up fluff, Kuroo can't drive
“Kuroo, you really have to loosen up a bit,” you can’t help but mention after looking over at the driver’s seat to find your friend with his arms straight out and his hands exactly at 9- and 3 o’clock positions on the steering wheel.
“What do you mean? I’m loose! I’ve never been looser!” his voice continues to rise in pitch. “See this?” he says as he takes his left hand off the wheel. “So loose!”
You raise a brow at his antics. He was clearly losing it, if he ever had it to begin with.
The car begins to swerve left and right as he struggles to maneuver with only one hand on the wheel.
You would be more scared, but this is the fifth late night driver’s ed session you’ve held for your friend. Near death experiences were pretty much old hat by now. Getting flashbacks of your life got old quickly after the second time Kuroo nearly caused both of you to crash into a median.
“Kuroo,” you say sternly. “Put both hands back on the wheel.”
“Aye aye cap’n,” he responds shakily as his left hand darts back to the wheel. His knuckles turn white as he holds the steering wheel in a death grip.
You sigh in your seat as the car’s path stabilizes.
He spares you a quick glance. “I’m sorry.”
“I’m sorry too. I don’t know how I can help you any better.” Your hand absentmindedly makes its way to pat the top of his thigh and the next thing you know your whole body is jerking to the side as Kuroo makes an abrupt stop at the side of the road.
“What the-?!” but before you can finish the expletive, he cuts you off.
“You make me nervous, okay!” he exclaims as he unbuckles his seatbelt.
You nearly sputter. “What?”
He shuts his eyes and groans into his hands. “I cannot believe I just said that.”
“Neither can I,” you respond. “Am I that bad of a driving instructor?”
He groans again. “No, it’s not that at all! Kenma was right.”
You lean over to rub small circles onto his right shoulder. “Hey, I’m sure he was but right about what?”
He mumbles something under his breath.
“You’re going to have to speak up, pal,” you tell him.
He takes a deep breath. “I’ll tell you, but I need you to drive me home so that if you take what I’m about to say like how I think you’re going to take it, I can just turn tail and run up to my apartment.”
You hold his gaze and can see the uncharacteristic fear and nervousness behind his eyes. “Alright,” you unbuckle your own seatbelt and open the door.
Silence from Kuroo Tetsurou is not something you’re used to, but you’ve driven for about twenty minutes now and the only thing that’s been keeping you company has been the sound of the radio. You’ve always loved driving, especially without the hustle and bustle of the typical daytime Tokyo traffic. Driving calmed you down, but with the oppressive silence, you can’t help but find your thoughts scrambling. What was it that he wanted to wait to tell you?
“You make it seem like magic,” he finally comments as you pull into his apartment’s garage.
“Driving?” you ask and he nods. “Well, it wasn’t always like this, but the more you do it, the more confidence you get. I know you’ll get there eventually, and even if you decide driving isn’t for you, you know I’m always willing to drive you around.”
He chuckles wryly. “You might want to reconsider that after what I tell you.”
You grasp his hand in yours. “I promise you I won’t.”
He gives you a weak grin before entwining your pinky with his.
“I think I might have non-platonic feelings for you,” he finally blurts out.
You’re glad you’ve already parked because you’re sure that you would have crashed your car.
“Define non-platonic.” He gulps as your eyes search his.
He groans and covers his eyes. “I don’t know. I think I’ve felt this way for a while now,” he starts. “But I look at you and I just feel like I belong. I want to go on dates where we argue about who’s going to pay. I wanna go on drives where I can keep one hand on the wheel because the other is holding yours.”
You don't know how to respond, so you don't.
"And now I've just gone and made a mess of things haven't I?" he mumbles morosely.
Your hands move to gently pry his from his face. You gently tilt his head so that he’s left with no other choice but to face you.
“Do you want to kiss me too?” you can’t help but ask with a teasing grin.
“You’re the worst!” he exclaims. He tries to move his hands back to cover the blush on his face, but you keep them in yours. “I can’t believe I’m pouring my heart out to you, and you think it’s a good time to joke around!” he complains with a pout.
You give his hands a soft squeeze as you laugh at the adorable flush on his face. “I’ll tell you a secret too. It's only fair after all,” you say as you lean in.
“I’d like to kiss you,” you whisper.

Legends and myths about trees
Celtic beliefs in trees (15)
H for Huath (Hawthorn) - May 13th - June 9th
“May tree - Sixth month of the Celtic tree calendar (Ref)”
colour: midnight blue; Gem: lapis lazuli; Gender: female; Patrons: Olwen, Blodeuedd, Chaldean, Humen, Selene, Virgin Mary; Symbols: love + marriage, fertility + birth, reproduction, heart
The short, thorny, graceful hawthorn. The slender hawthorn trunk and branches twist as the years go by. In winter they are particularly beautiful, standing clinging to misty wildernesses and craggy rocky outcrops, or clustered on open ranges of hills that their appearance is spectacular. Leaves and flowers appear simultaneously in May, signalling the change of season from spring to summer. Hawthorn flowers bloom in clusters, so that at the height of spring, rows of white froth run across the fields and mountains, a scene aptly captured by the English writer H. E. Bates as 'the fluffy cream floating in May'.
In spring, when the hawthorn flowers are in full bloom, the air releases a musky, sweet, rich fragrance all around. Small round berries turn burgundy in autumn.
In Ireland, hawthorn is still cherished as a magical tree protected by the fairy kingdom. Tradition has it that if you cut down a single hawthorn tree standing alone in a field or burial mound, you will lose your livestock and household possessions.
Hawthorn trees protect wells and springs as fairy trees. The beautiful flowers of hawthorn are also said to deliver prayers to the heavens. Even today, many people tie rags and other items to hawthorn trees standing near wells and springs, wishing for good luck or that their love will reach the person they love.
Before Christianity, hawthorn was the supreme fertility symbol and at the May Festival, people confided their love, danced to their heart's content and made love in the woods. Among the Celts, spring was the season for marriage, and it was customary to bring a bouquet of hawthorn flowers to weddings to ensure that the couple would be blessed with children.
In Britain, the earliest known hawthorn goddess was Olwen ('white footprints'), a woman of courage, wit and beauty. The well-known mythological tale of Culhwch and Olwen, in which King Arthur's cousin, Culhwch, overcame 40 impossible tasks that seemed virtually unattainable set out by Olwen's father, the giant king, Yspaddaden, and marry his beloved Olwen.
As the beautiful, white hawthorn flowers opened, people celebrated the power of nature and love to bring new life into the world and marvelled at the miracles of sexual activity, pregnancy and childbirth. For the Celts, sexual activity, pregnancy and childbirth were not something to be ashamed of, but an essential part of life and a sacred expression that one could love.
