The Oriental Lilies have started to bloom in my garden here in Austin, Texas! I am growing them for the first time and I am smitten by their beauty. It is difficult to get large and showy blooms in our hot and humid climate but the Oriental Lilies deliver! They were super easy to grow and I intend to plant more next year! Unfortunately, I can’t share the name of the variety, since this one should have been pink but is clearly a mislabeled one! I love it anyway, though! My new Waco garden!

My dreams of growing a wild flower garden are finally coming true. Not exactly what I envisioned when I planted these seeds last spring, but the blooms and color are still blessing me, even though I imagine they long to leap out of these containers to expand and grow wildly in the ground!

My initial plan was to use these flowers with #senoritalily to try flower pounding and flower printing on cotton and linen fabric. Who knows if we will get to that actual project this year, but I will certainly enjoy their beauty while they last.

Bumblebees love our native red spiral mallow. From 7am until 8 pm I watch these little ladies forage. Not only does the mallow bloom when almost nothing else is through our brutal heat, but it is feeding both bumblebees and hummingbirds!! Did you know one of our bumblebees is now on the Endangered species list? My chiltepin came back after all the rain we’ve had over the last 2 months. This plant was originally a volunteer in shade bed on the other side of the house. It then spent some time (months if not a year) in a pot next to that shade bed. I finally moved it to the first hugel last fall. Welcome June! It has been super hot the last week here in Austin, Texas, and very few of the plants in my garden are looking good right now. One of the exceptions is Echinacea purpurea ‚PowWow’. This beautiful white coneflower seems to love the heat and is relatively drought and humidity tolerant. So it is an ideal plant for Central Texas. It Is also supposed to attract butterflies and hummingbirds even though I have to say I haven’t seen neither feasting on my plant. I have often complained on my Instagram account about how hard it is to garden here in Austin. And I do believe everyone who is gardening in this area will attest to that. But I have decided to try to find plants that like to live in the conditions that my garden has to offer and that I love. That will make my life as an organic gardener much easier and also will probably make for a much more satisfying gardening experience. Coneflowers are definitively belonging in this plant category. Anther good thing is that they also fit into my desired cottage garden style and there are many different varieties out there. The flowers of our old gnarly ornamental cherry tree have come and gone but they were so pretty while they lasted. Because of our hot spring days flowering trees and shrubs bloom only for a very short time here in Austin, so you need to enjoy them while they are having their moment. You won’t believe how much I am longing for the daffodils to come up and show their pretty, cheerful, yellow faces like in this photo taken in my garden last year. I have planted plenty of new daffodils last autumn and hope that some from the year before have naturalized and come up, again. Unfortunately, so far I have only a few green leave tips showing that I can count on one hand and not a single flower bud in sight, yet. Will the other daffs emerge? Will they bloom? Do I have a crop fail? Anxious thoughts of a still relatively new Central Texas gardener. A little Christmas magic for the gardener! My first amaryllis, the variety is called ‘Apple Blossom’, opened fully today. Everyone who has ever grown amaryllises knows how hard it is to time the opening of the flowers. So I will just consider this a good omen. I hope your Christmas celebrations are lovely and you are having a beautiful day! Here the weather is absolutely wonderful and we sat long in the garden and simply enjoyed the sun. We will be going for a dog walk later and look at the beautiful Christmas lights in our neighbor at dawn. Theoretically there should be twenty four Paperwhites blooming in my garden at the moment, because that is how many I had planted last autumn. The reality is that there is only one that has an open flower right now. Why, you are asking? Because it was so warm here in Austin at the end of autumn and the beginning of winter that most of them bloomed in December. Well, that makes this one very precious so I wanted to share it with you. Hostas are one of my favorite foliage plants and the choice of varieties are endless. To my surprise they grow well in the shade under our live oaks here in my organic garden with supplemental watering and the occasional feeding of an organic all purpose fertilizer. I thought it would be way too hot for them here in the summer in Austin, Texas but thanks goodness I was wrong! Mine are planted in the ground and I had delightfully little slug problems so far. I have only two varieties in the moment in my garden but I intend to add a few more and build up a collection. I would love to acquire a chartreuse colored variety as seen in this photo which I took in England. Any other hosta lovers out there? Which is your favorite variety? Gardening is not all about beautiful flowers. Especially in a climate like we have here in Austin where growing showy blooms is often a true challenge, leaves become all the more important. I recently came across this beauty at The Natural Gardener, a local organic nursery. It is an ajuga reptans called ‘Burgundy Glow‘ and I immediately fell in love. The common name of this plant is bugleweed or just bugle. Isn’t the coloration of the variegated cream, pink, burgundy, and green foliage just absolutely stunning? In addition to that it is supposed to get spikes of blue flowers in spring. It is supposed to become a dense ground cover that suppresses weeds. I can’t wait until my three tiny ajugas are bulking up and I so hope that they will do well in my garden in the long run. How to you feel about the foliage of plants?
