This Week In BL - Everything is Awful or New or Both

Being a highly subjective assessmen t of one tiny corner of the interwebs. Organized by which ones (in each category) I’m enjoying most.

Ongoing Series - Thai

My School President (Fri YT) ep 11 of 12 - It’s an ep 11 so we knew this was gonna be a downer. This was definitely a “date me date my friends” kind of situation. At this rate, GeminiFourth’s other characters in Chicken are going to kiss before TinnGun do. I love Tinn’s dad. Also, it looks like our a tiny little ship of crumbs is sailing. How cute is that!? Sunshine + sunshine! Bonza.

Bed Friend (Sat YT & iQIYI uncut) 1 of 8 - Fuck buddies get messy, AKA Between Us the second cumming only this time in an office (and on a desk). I have been waiting for James to hold down (or be held down in) a BL for years! All hail the new kings of high heat. BUCKLE UP I GOT A LOT TO SAY. I like that there’s a dark underbelly (*snicker*) of trauma to this one, it has a slightly a Japanese feel which suits mature characters and an office setting. King’s yearning worried eyes are glorious. Poor thing, he totally adores this beautiful broken fragile boy and doesn’t know how to capture his attention. I admit Net was the one I worried about with this pair. James was always gonna be great. It turns out, I didn’t have to worry. This is an awesome show and I fucking love it. It nearly scooped the top spot. Frankly this is the Office BL I have been WAITING for Thailand to give us.

NOTE: I watched both YT’s cut and iQIYI’s uncut version. (Anyone else feel odd using those terms under a high heat BL context?) I like YT’s better, mostly iQIYI’s interface is shit. Deets? There was a little extra from the “morning after regrets flashbacks” but not so much I think you’ll regret missing it. Unless you REALLY prefer high heat. The emotion of the sexual connection and Uea’s lonely submissive need was transmitted in both versions, but the iQIYI is slightly more MOAR.

Never Let Me Go (Tues YT) ep 10 of 12 - Flashbacks to the cutest boyfriends ever and then PAIN. All I can think is “thank fuck this was handed to Pond & Phuwin.” One of the world’s saddest executions of the sniff test trope. Meanwhile, Perth is SO GOOD but I wish Chopper would record his conversations with his dad. Look, we all know Chopper is gonna take his dad’s bullet for Nuengdiao, right? Oh well, if you didn’t know, I just told you.

Moonlight Chicken (Weds YT) 3-4 of 8 - The plot... erm... thickens. I told you Jim had a tragic backstory with an ex. And now it’s all gotten VERY messy. Sigh. Fourth & Gemini are cute, tho.

Hit Bite Love (Sat YouTube) ep 4-5 of 6 - I do like King & Burger. The idea of giving your perspective boyfriend your CV is ADORBS. Auditioning for the part, as it were. I would like it known that my sexual identity is chili (AKA spicy) henceforth. (My pronouns are MaxTul & sometimes Phi.) Look, this is an absurd show. Last ep it was BDSM 101, this ep we got a lesson on how to use a condom properly? AND why the closet is both necessary and damaging? I mean I applaud their educational endeavors but BL: The After School Special? Did I sign up for Degrassi Junior BL while I wasn’t looking?

Boyband (Thurs YT) 1 of 10 - BL drama about putting an idol boyband together. AKA how to make ABL suffer by combing favorite (celebrity romances, Kpop) and least favorite (bad singing) tropes. AND? I REALLY like it. It’s fun! What singing there is, is looped not live. So we in Cutie Pie territory. It’s easy to skip. The pairing is rich/poor and I like an other side of the tracks romance.

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

HIStory 5: Love in the Future (Taiwan Weds Viki) ep 8 of 10 (or 15&16 of 20) - Covid strikes. Boyfriends are worried. Omg they are so cute and hot and awkward. Tension in the office politics too. It’ll be okay, babies.

Jack o’Frost (Japan) ep 1 of 6 - After getting dumped, Ritsu has an accident and gets amnesia. Ikuya, his ex, struggles to help him regain his memories while wondering about the state of their relationship. But Ritsu falls in love with Ikuya all over again. Engaging opening but I’m just not sure about the premise.

It’s Airing But ...

Chains of Heart (Sat Gaga) 1 of 10 - Not dropping for me until tomorrow so it’ll be in next week’s round up I hope. Suspense thriller about a forest ranger, smugglers, amnesia, and lost love. Stars Haii (Cirrus in TT2) and Marc (My Gear & Your Gown in YYY). Adapted from a Y-novel of the same name by TJ Tommy.

My Beautiful Man 2 (Viki & Gaga) - Because there are only 4 eps, I decided to wait and binge this one.

Cafe In Love (Thai) 10 eps on Ch3+ - Thai pulp, stars the actor who played Noh’s best friend Ohm in Love Sick 2. When his coffee shop closes, a man tries everything to save it and falls in love along the way. I had a hunt but can’t find it.

Moments Of Love (Thai) Feb 14 Foremorfilm Production movie for cinema release. Was originally a series with Golf (609 Bedtime Story & The Eclipse) to direct, and SmartJames (LeonPhob from Don't Say No) to star. BUT is now something totally different. We’re all confused.

Destiny Seeker (Tues WeTV ) 10 eps - it’s not on any WeTV I can get ahold of. Engineering student Songkram is head of dorm 3, for "strong & athletic" students. Aye is head of dorm 2, for the "good looking" students. Aye used to be Songkram's tutor and friend, but they fell apart after becoming dorm heads. Aye is actually in love with Songkram but thinks Sonkram likes someone else. Songkram actually likes Aye. So, Bad Buddy the pulp rebirth meets that weird Japanese “girls-crossdressing-as-boys for love and infiltrating secret society of hotness” tradition.

Our Winter (Thai & Korea ?) - TutorYim vehicle supposedly airing now. Search me.

The End Of The World, With You AKA Bokura no Micro na Shuumatsu (Japan Sun Gaga) - DNFing this one. It’s way too high heat for them to end it happily and full of dark stuff like cheating, suicide, depression, abuse. I actively HATE one of the main characters and mildly dislike the other. Easier to just stop watching.

Naughty Babe Ramble

There's gonna be spoilers up to episode 4...just so you're aware.

I've been really stuck thinking about this past episode and sort of where we are about half-way through. I know for a lot of people, Naughty Babe is just silly fun, and there's also plenty who just wave it off as campy semi-BS. And while the show is certainly set up to be more silly than serious, I really have been engrossed by the new glimpses we've gotten into Yi and Diao now that they're at the center.

I loved them as a couple in the Cutie Pie series, though I had some concerns, mostly things that I've been able to abandon now that we've gotten a bit more insight into Yi's mind specifically. Cutie Pie is very much Kuea's perspective, and therefore pretty knowledgeable of Diao's personality, but less so of Yi.

And while I was somewhat suspicious of what we were going to see after the trailers, knowing about the whole amnesia thing, I'm actually pretty satisfied overall. Both because the amnesia didn't last for the whole season, but also because they clearly recognize that Diao knows Yi well enough to figure out he's lying. Like I do agree that both Lian and his dad would figure it out first, just because Yi doesn't hide so much from them, but I was concerned they would set Diao up to look a bit like an imbecile, and he is so not.

I'm gonna start by talking about Diao, mostly because he's my favorite, but also because if we recognize that this show is mostly Yi's perspective, then I'm so happy they're still showing Diao as feisty, and cute. He's still shown as a little shy, but I think he's definitely guarded around Yi, especially right in this time, so it makes sense, that he sort of reads it that way. One of my favorite things about Diao in Cutie Pie was that he was clearly just as strong-willed and self-aware as Kuea, but where Kuea is more brash, Diao is just a tad softer. But his softness isn't weakness (I fucking hate when people think that) and we're continually given glimpses of his strength, both mentally and physically.

His practice and teaching of Taekwondo is clearly part of that, it's a martial arts style that has a heavy focus on meditation and mindfulness, but also philosophy of how you should behave as a citizen of humanity. It's also listed often as a potentially good option for self-defense in those that are of smaller stature (which Diao is). It's a martial art that I think is well-matched to the character, in that it's both strong and elegant, with a focus on moral character.

The series so far shows Diao as mainly admirable...which is great, but it also speaks to what Diao is so frustrated by. He's not a piece of art, he doesn't want to be set on a pedestal and admired, he wants to be loved. He's been clear in his passion to Yi in the past, but it's Yi's that's stuck in his own head about what if's and so they aren't able to progress. And so now we're 3 years in the future, and Diao's wondering if he read everything all wrong.

So moving on to hia Yi...I know you're trying, but god, do I wish that you would just get it together. I understand that the root of his behavior is all fear. He's afraid that the past coming to light, and his connection to Diao's trauma will cause DIao to hate him...and dude...if you pulled your head out of your ass and actually took in the person that Diao has become you'd see that it would never happen. I know he's drowning in the guilt of what happened with the tiger/puma/dog/jackalope (depending on when and where the story's being told)...but if you think Diao would learn that and not recognize that you were a 15 year old child who made a horrible mistake??? Diao has so much empathy, and Yi knows that, but he's still can't comprehend that that empathy also extends to him for some reason.

As flawed as the man is, and honestly as poorly as he sees himself sometimes, though usually glossed over by the sheen of narcissism, he can be such a good man. In all of this universe, I've always been a bit meh on Max's acting, I'll be honest. He's fine, but I've always felt like because his character was so staid that I wasn't engaged, especially when Zee and Nunew and Nat were given so much more expression and emotion. But this last couple of episodes really, but especially number four, he has really been doing some great work.

He's both solidified a lot of aspects of the character as well as bringing new depth. The nightmares talk and panic attack scene were really so good. Him just laying there as Diao talks about his nightmares and his eyes are just full of so many different emotions. and then when the panic attack really kicks in, his overall concern is not disturbing Diao. You don't have to have an internal monologue to know exactly where this panic attack comes from, and it's portrayed really well in my opinion. Of course everyone's experience will differ, but my sister has an anxiety disorder, and really her feelings as she's described them and her physical condition as I've watched her experience these attacks...they match up pretty well.

In a lot of ways I do feel like we are seeing a little bit of the same character arc for the couple here that we saw for Lian and Kuea in Cutie Pie, with both Lian and Yi afraid that somehow they're being selfish in wanting their relationships with Kuea and Diao respectively. I think it's something that stems from their age difference, this knowing that there is a lot of opportunity out there for them, and are they sort of clipping their wings? It's a bit different for Kuea and Diao, but it does boil down to both wanting to be truly seen for who they are. For Kuea it was about reconciling his 'true self' and knowing that Lian loved him still. With Diao, I think it's about being seen as himself, but also being seen as someone worthy of being a true partner to Yi, to stand beside him. I think Yi's tendency to coddle him and lie to him has caused him to assume that Yi doesn't believe he's capable of handling the truth. And in a bit of a match to Kuea, since they've always been these sort of biddable, polite people (which is based around the cultural expectations especially in relation to their age difference), will there still be love and affection if they're assertive of their own needs/desires? For Kuea the answer was clearly yes, which Diao knows, but I think Lian was also a lot easier to read for Diao than Yi. It's also complicated by the fact that Diao is also afraid of what he might see, and so I think he chooses not to.

My last little part isn't really about character, but more about how wildly uncomfortable I was watching the interactions between Diao's family and Yi and Diao. It was both awkward and insanely infuriating. I felt so insulted on Yi's behalf, watching this family treat him like little more than an open wallet. And don't even get me started on Diao, the way I know he was so embarrassed by their behavior, not just because it's so icky, but also because it makes him wonder "Does hia Yi think that I'm in this for his money??" I also kind of hated it because hia Yi clearly values family, and I know for certain that he's glad that his own father has such strong love and affection for Diao, to not be seen equally by Diao's family probably really hurts.

(I'm sorry this was such a ramble, but I have a lot of random feelings about the show.)

I used to love shounen and shoujo manga equally....But ever since I found BL manga 3 years ago, my interest in shoujosei (especially het romance) decrese a lot, and what I search for is just the dynamic between mc (male) and male lead...I don't want to read mc (female) and male lead or mc (male) and female lead...And what I want to read mostly are just mlm or wlw stories....

What do you think is happening to me? Is it really weird?

Hello, anon! Thank you so much for sharing this with me.

It is not weird in the least. I'll answer this personally to start: I've been watching almost only exclusively BLs for the past almost-year, in part due to my wanting to learn more about the Thai BL genre.

But also: I'm gaining a tremendous amount of knowledge -- and, more importantly for me, an experience of relatability -- when I watch on screen the struggles of a queer relationship, or multiple queer relationships, to succeed.

BLs (at least the best and very best ones), for me, capture and define the struggles of vulnerable populations/demographics to succeed and be happy in oftentimes brutally biased worlds.

I'm a woman of color and a first-generation American: the majority-white society and pillars of power in the States are not built to accommodate my success and happiness. So, very often in my career and my personal life, I struggle against assumptions, biases, racism, sexism, bigotry, xenophobia, the whole bit.

I see that reflected in BLs. I see the struggles of queer people working against, and sometimes with, foundations of power to find their happiness. Same-sex marriage is not legal in Thailand, yet I just watched Kuea and Lian get married in Cutie Pie 2 You; I saw how Make It Right and Bed Friend ended in proposals. Those notes of hope resonate with me.

I hope this is answering your question in some way, but. I want to note that even if you're not queer, you can gain tremendous artistic satisfaction and experiences of relatability in watching art that may not exactly represent your own personal demographics. And that's not only okay, it is WONDERFUL that you're spreading your wings and exploring content out of the genres that you used to read. You're getting something out of BL/QL content -- over time, you can think about naming those satisfactions, and even celebrating them, like I do. There is nothing weird about this process: it is so fabulous that you are gaining new perspectives.

My top BL-Series Of 2022

Hello my fellow Bl-fans. The girls/ gays and theys obviously won this year, so let’s look back on our blessings 😃

I’m not spoiling anything or I’m trying not to, let’s go 🚶🏻‍♀️

1. KinnPorsche

This doesn‘t come surprising, does it? I remember how I lived week to week back then and the mafia topic was still kind of new and oh so exciting. Enough sexyness, earnestness and humour gave this series a well rounded outcome. There were still holes in the plot here and there but where weren‘t any this year? Let‘s move on. (Waiting for season 2)

2. Semantic Error

My god, these two held me by my throat in the beginning of this year, you couldn‘t help but immediately fall in love with them. It was a successful series and I hope Jaechan and Seoham will do another project in the future, but I don’t think so as of now.

3. Young Royals 2

Another Wilmon gold piece produced, which plot went smooth and showed progress over the episodes. It’s still very short for such an amazing piece and I miss Wilmon almost all of the time, but I‘ll gladly wait for season 3.

4. The Eclipse

The portraying of strong queers went WILD with this one. How Akk got weak in the knees because of Ayan had me gushing over them every week. The plot is lacking a little tho since some points weren’t finished/ worked on properly and Thua..no, just no. Neo looked so dann handsome in his role though and did such a good job with Louis!

5. Between Us

It‘s not finished yet and the plot seems to move too slow atm, but boy, Win is the consent king of this year and is doing the work for every bl character this year that couldn’t do the bare minimum. *COUGH*LITA*COUGH*

We also got a P‘Deeaan~ and the UWMA throwback is nice and so well done from this perspective.

6. Cutie Pie

Nunew and Zee feeding the sub bottom/ dom top fetish/ height difference fetish well 😂 I didn’t like the bff side couple that much and sometimes the corny plot was too much, but the acting was well done.

7. My School President

I can’t believe either that this is in my list already BUT IT IS MAKING ME FEEL THINGS THAT COME CLOSE TO THE THINGS I FELT WHILE WATCHING BAD BUDDY. It is super cute now, not like you think at the beginning and I can’t wait for a new episode. The fandom posts here on Tumblr are also 😘👌🏻

8. Never Let Me Go

This one is also here already. Can’t say much except for the acting that has improved for both Pond and especially Phuwin, my little guy grew up.

9. Blueming

One of the best k-bls this year, hands down. Story, aesthetics, just everything.

10. 180 Degrees Longitude Passes Through Us

"You ask me what I‘m thinking about, I tell you that I’m thinking about whatever you’re thinking about“ it’s DADDY ISSUES, everyone! We all needed a series like this. It was slow-paced and kind of clickbait, but the aesthetic shots made up for that. Nothing made up for the one of a hell annoying mother tho. I also didn’t know any of the actors before even though they seem quite famous.

Very honorable mentions:

Plus And Minus (best Taiwanese bl, still not over the cameo)

Star In My Mind (the Joong-flavour)

My Only 12% (good worked out plot, good acting, angsty season)

Enchanté (the end omg 🤦🏻‍♀️, Force is one handsome dude)

My Secret Love (preferred the second couple)

Cherry Magic The Movie (😍 I missed them and WEDDIIIIING)

Big Dragon (…they could improve the plot for season 2)

Love Mechanics (the kinda non-con at the end turned me off and it wasn’t my favourite story to begin with)

Eternal Yesterday (I should‘ve watched the trailer, I didn’t expect THAT 😂 but it was still good)

To My Star 2 (at first I thought we didn’t need the angst, but we kind of did)

Vice Versa (good story, mediocre acting, not my favorite couple except for the lesbians 😏)

Cupid’s Last Wish (…we didn’t need that, but EarthMix we did)

Kissable lips (I’m happy that the actors still work together, but it was mediocre)

About Youth (can’t remember anything, but it was good 😶)

My Tooth Your Love (cute and the couples slayed)

Magic Of Zero (🥹 EarthMix and MilkLove)

Secret Crush On You (super corny and mediocre acting, but the topics they handled and how they handled them!! Rare occasion)

The Tuxedo (pretty actors and an okay plot)

The Miracle Of Teddy Bear (not my cup of tea, but I’m happy it was kinda famous in Thailand)

Minato’s Laundromat (did turn me off and also non-con)

A Man Who Defies The World Of BL 2 (it was probably decent, but I can’t remember one second of it 😫, I’m getting old)

Ocean Likes Me (cute and HOLLAND💓💓💓💓💗 but we didn’t need that)

Cherry Blossoms After Winter (the non-con destroyed it)

Our Days (I don’t know what the person ate that made the plot go this way)

War Of Y (started off good, but went downhill pretty fast. Been skipping the last few weeks through the episodes)

Love Victor 3 (not sure where to put this honestly. I loved 1&2, but this was a back and forth, which is normal for teenagers, but I think this wasn’t it for me)

Mr. Cinderella (finally a Vietnamese bl, but not my cup of tea)

Heartstopper (kinda overhyped, plot didn’t get me, boring 😶)

Note at the end: Look how far we’ve come! It’s sad bl’s with lots of sex scenes get the most attention, I recommend everyone to just watch porn if you’re thinking a series/ movie is bad/ not enough because there is not enough bed sports displayed. If you’re an adult, you must know there are relationships that aren’t only in for the sex. (Since I’ve seen enough people saying you’re not a couple when you’re not having sex, BULLSHIT YOU F***ING CHILDREN)

Hi yes I’m still here collecting crumbs from BounPrem's cameo on Cutie Pie the Series welcome to the party.

I posted a version of this on a Twitter thread a couple of days ago, but Twitter swallows posts so quickly, I wanted to clean it up and add it here too in case anyone else wants to join me in making fanworks about them. 😌 (Especially fic, please, I'm on my knees in a $900 suit.)

Now! Celebrate with me the six-minute appearance of my new hyperfixation comfort couple:

Age-wise, Top and Lian seem to be the same age. I've seen varying information on how old Lian is, but I saw twenty-seven mentioned most recently. Top's cheerleading story and the reactions it gets from Yi and Black seem to imply that all of Lian's friends went to university together and were likely in the same year. So let's say Lian, Top, Yi, and Black are all about twenty-seven.

We hear Win use the "phi" honorific with Top, Lian, and Yi, so he's definitely younger than them. But Win also tells Kuea he has photos and videos of the cheerleading story on his own Facebook page, so he probably went to university with them as well, just in a lower year. I'd say that means he's only a year or two younger, about twenty-five or twenty-six.

And even though Win's younger than his friends, he's not especially deferential to any of them.

He freely teases Lian and Yi, confidently calls out Black on his "love is enough" nonsense, and he's comfortable with openly scowling at Top when Top calls Kuea cute. (Of Note: Top seems to enjoy Win's insouciant personality and even actively joins in with his recreational disrespect. I'm going to assume that's part of why they make a good match for each other. Associates in chaos. <3)

While getting to know Kuea, Win asks if Kuea wants to try dating someone other than Lian since he's still so young. Win, as the only other person there younger than the others, might want to know because he and Top have both dated others before they decided on each other, therefore Win can't imagine marrying your first boyfriend.

(I'd say there's a possibility that Win's asking for himself because he's only ever dated Top and he's curious what it'd be like to date other people, but I think if that were the case, Top's expression would be more concerned. As it is, Top seems just as curious as Win.)

Win's obviously annoyed when Top calls Kuea cute, which implies some level of jealousy. But I wonder if Win's particularly annoyed because this is his older boyfriend complimenting 1) a younger guy, and 2) a guy even younger than Win.

From Win's glare and Top's sheepish grin, flirtatiousness might be an established subject of discussion—or at least tension—between them.

That said, I'd also guess that Win and Top are the most settled couple in their friend group since Black uses them as an example by default to contrast Lian keeping Kuea away from them for so many years.

I love that neither Win nor Top objects to the "inseparable" comment. Top seems pleased by it, Win vaguely smug. I think that says a lot about them right there.

During the Never Have I Ever game, we learn that they've both kissed strangers, but interestingly, apparently neither of them knew before the game, and they do NOT seem to appreciate the history lesson. Top insists to Win that he was drunk and single at the time, but Win still looks annoyed, so this'll probably be revisited later.

Personally, I don't think either of them cheated, but given the "inseparable" thing, it's interesting that this is new information for them. I'd guess it happened years ago, probably in university before they started dating.

(Top's devastated little <:O face is super endearing.)

When Black makes a casual suggestion that marriage isn't necessary and love on its own is enough, Win is quick to present his perspective on the lack of queer rights in their country and the necessity of marriage equality. Given the probability that he and Top have been together for years by this point, marriage might be something Win wants, and he might be especially touchy about anyone casually dismissing how important it is.

(Before we move on, please note Top's proud smile, for I may never recover. This man doesn't just love his boyfriend, he admires him.)

(Also, Black's casual dismissal of same-sex relationships while surrounded by five queer men makes his presence there a little strange, so I'm assuming he's known them since they were in university together and he has some additional familial or business connection that explains why he's still hanging out with them. I would be willing to bet one of the things Top complained about to Win on the way home was, "Who keeps inviting Black?")

The way they touch also implies that they've been together for a long time. It's not clingy and passionate like a new couple might be; it's much more casually affectionate. At twenty-seven and twenty-five/six, it's very possible they've been dating for up to five years or even longer.

We also find out during the game that their first date was apparently somewhere in Africa. The fact that Top forgot that first date was on another continent could mean a lot of things: general forgetfulness, they were only there for a short while, he travels a lot, etc. (Just imagine where their other dates have been. Lots of potential for fanwork there. Y'know. Just saying.)

When they all drink for Who Has a Superbike, Top seems a little cagey and glances at Win before he sips. I'm not as sure what this was supposed to mean, but I read it as Top knowing about Lian's gift for Kuea and seeing if Win's picked up on it. I can't think of another reason why he'd hide having one from Win, unless he's not supposed to have one for some reason. (Broke one once? Almost crashed one? Etc.?)

Later, when Lian says Kuea wants to break their engagement, Top's quick to ask Kuea if Lian's not good enough for him. I thought this was sweet because if Top's been friends with Lian since at least university, he's probably seen evidence of Lian trying to lead a double life in the hope of being good enough for Kuea's family name.

Top asking Kuea if Lian's not good enough for him is sweetly loyal to Lian; maybe even protective of him.

Win's solemn, supportive silence was also sweet to me because it implied that while he'll tease Lian and be cheeky to his seniors in general, he won't allow any real cruelty to them, especially from people he perceives to be outsiders.

Ultimately, the impression I got from their six minutes of screentime is that Top and Win have a comfortable and fond relationship with some spice. They're also visibly and publicly proud to be with each other, which seems important for both of them. And based on Win's speech, it's probably not wild to assume that they'd want more if it were legal for them. 🏳️‍🌈

The MF ACTING. We all know zee is absolutely Amazing™ and those arguments made me highkey hate hielian but then the flashbacks just had me crying over his heart eyes. We Stan range. Nunew protrays the two sides of Kuae SO WELL OMG polar opposites while still being the same person. When he was crying, I was crying with him😭🤧That drunken scene was so funny I was hollering when he fell down and woke up XD

I am floored RN. I love how the whole Kirin mystery is already being revealed in ep2! One bc it doesnt drag it out and two bc it makes sense: Gemini is competition so they must have been looking into kirin for a while and would eventually find out who he is !!

I'm so intriged by the whole engagement bit. First, its a new type of plot for BL, but the specifics are so interesting. Personally, I think Kuae's grandpa wanted to bless their union/wanted to know who his grandson might marry in order to rest easy (I cried when they showed Kuae crying! No one told him!!! :'((( )

It makes me think Hialian MUST love him (at least at the time) bc its not a legal marriage thing (as said by Hia Yi) so honoring his word seems to vague an answer? Its not like he needs Kuae's family money now that he's a ceo himself - even if its to repay him, his grandfather said he didnt have to agree so I wonder if that will be explored.

Love the cast already. Very exited to see what Hia Yi and Kon (or is it Diao ? I don't know what his name is exactly) relationship is like (I'm so happy seeing them act as a couple again!). love how they both seem to be good support systems for each lead. Also Perth (Jay) looks so good and him speaking English makes me lose it (every time man) love the bits of English since its established Kuae and Kon studied in the UK!

Kuae engineering squad was so cute (also ACTUAL ENGINEERING WORK IN MY BL?? wild) I think seeing them puts the audience perspective on the image Kuae has put on for HieLian (who thinks he's doing a computer engineering degree, I'd assume bc is more 'proper' than the mechanical more manual stuff he actually does (also mans rides a motorcycle for fun so his major makes sense!) Like u can tell its something integral to his character. I'm guessing Kuae changed so much for HieLian's social image and his perceived taste (see the date scene) bc its clear Hia has reacted negatively to Kuae's actual personality.

Speaking of the date *sigh* Hialian my guy...wtf...how can u sit there and expect my Kuae to not be mad! You have a date plan and invite a "buissness partner" who is over u the entire time? I'd be pissed too tf-

TLDR my saturdays are now 1000% better I'm so exited for the rest of this show.

It was actually Masamune that pestered the shit out of you, that pulled you out of your shell to start interacting with the other warlords. Hideyoshi suspicions of you also lasted 0.2 seconds, as you were so shy and introverted around him he couldn’t help but turn into MOTHER MUST PROTEC CUTIE MODE. Between the two of them, you slowly but surely started opening up to the people around you and started to come to like it in your new home. You mostly kept to yourself not wanting to bother the people around you.

You spent most of your time reading in the castle’s archives. You were awestruck when Mitsunari first showed you the place, and it had quickly become your second home. You would spend hours and hours reading their vast amounts of books. You were shook at how advanced and spot on some of their scientific books were. You had a set routine, you would wake up eat breakfast and spend the whole day reading. You would often be so engrossed in your studies that you would fall asleep in the archives. That my friend is how Ieyasu came to slowly get used to you. He would go the archives late at night to pick up more books and drop off ones that he had just finished reading. He couldn’t help but roll his eyes at the sleeping princess. It seems you had yet again fallen asleep sprawled across one of the newest biology arrivals. He quietly walked up to you, to see what you were reading. His eyes widened in surprise, and he couldn’t help but give you a slither of a smile “Not as dumb as you look”. You were busy reading a new complex biology book, filled with advanced concepts and terminology. He carefully took off his hoari and gently draped it around your shoulders, careful not to wake you. He then spared you one more glance and left the room.

You always got excited whenever you saw Mitsunari or Ieyasu in the archives. The best was when the three of you would sit together and have tea while discussing different scientific topics. THB you were even shook when Mitsuhide would join in the conversation give some perspectives of his own

However, all that was thrown out of balance when one day Nobunaga announced that the oda forces were going to war and that you were to accompany them as lucky charm. You were honestly FREAKING OUT. Although all those complaints fell on deaf ears as Nobunaga’s word was basically the law. You were assigned to help out Ieyasu in the medical tent. You breathed a sigh of relief as at least you knew enough about biology and veterinary science to be of some help. Ieyasu showed you the ropes, teaching you all the ins and outs of patching up injured soldiers on the fly. At night, the two of you would go out and forage for plants to make some medicine. You low key impressed Yasu with your vast knowledge of plants, you were also a fast learner and pick up concepts quickly. By the end of the war, you were a natural at patching up soldiers and making medicines from scratch.

The two of you had come to enjoy the other company and to say Ieyasu was a little sad to not have an excuse to see you every day would be an understatement.

After the two of you arrived back home, Nobunaga announced that some people had their eye on you and were planning on kidnapping you. You were shocked and a little scared. Ieyasu suggested that you learn some self-defence, and Mitsuhide chimed in saying that he would teach you how to shoot. And that my friend is how you landed up at Mitsuhide’s manor with Yasu. Mitsuhide taught the two of you to shoot a rifle. Of course, Yasu was slightly more skilled than you, as he had been doing these lesson for a few weeks now. Although TBH you shocked both of them when you picked up the rifle, after observing Mitsuhide shoot, and shot the target dead in the centre. These rifles were slightly different from the guns back home, but the basics remained the same. This basically resulted in you and Ieyasu having a shoot off to see who the best student was.

After your friendly lil competition Ieyasu grabbed your hand all while being as red as a tomato and lead you to his manor. He then gave you some salve to help ease the stiffness and muscle pain from a full day worth of shooting. At this point, you had quickly come to sum up the porcupine. You knew he was actually a massive sweetie pie and that his contrary way of speaking was just a mask. After he handed you the medicine, he offered you some tea.

As the two of you were sipping on tea and chatting, he curiously asked you where you had learned to shoot, and that is when you also revealed that you knew martial arts. Ieyasu looked at you in awe, was there anything this woman couldn’t do.

He had long ago fallen in love with you, but he just didn’t know how to tell you

One day you were walking around the garden when you spotted Ieyasu crouched down near a big sakura tree. You slowly made your way over to where he was crouched down, curious, to see what he was doing. Your eyes widen in shock at the scene in front of you. A small grey cat was severely injured, it looked like someone had beaten the poor thing. You crouched down beside him, this wasn’t your first time patching up an injured animal, you are a vet after all. You looked into Yasu’s emerald eyes, they were red with unshed tears. It was clear he like you was a massive animal lover. You placed your hand on top of his and squeezed it. “Let’s go back to your manor, I know how to patch this lil guy up.” “Silly girl, its already too late, his injuries are too severe there is nothing we can do for him.”

You ran to the castle and grabbed the medical kit in your room, you then took the cat from Yasu’s arms and gently laid him down on the soft hand towel you had brought with. You had tools in your medical kit that Ieyasu has never seen before, he was shocked. You took out your stethoscope and listen to his little heartbeat, afterwards you gave him a quick once over to asses the damage. You started to patch him up. You wrapped the small cat in a blankie you had brought along, and you and Yasu made your way back to his manor. You placed the cat to rest on Ieyasu’s futon. “I can’t believe how cruel people can be, hurting such a poor defenceless animal”. Ieyasu simply nodded and made the two of you some tea. You had told him about your life, your job back in the future and well the fact that you were from the future. Everything started to make sense to him.

Why you were so naïve, so pure and so innocent. And Yasu told you about his life, his time as a hostage, everything. Your lives had been so different from each other, yet here you were sitting across one another each in love with the other. You had visited Yasu every day to check up on the little cat. Through these visits, you and Yasu became even closer. And one-day Yasu decided to confess his love for you. He was overjoyed when you stated that you too had loved him for a long time.

The two of you made the cutest couple, the dr and the vet. The two of you patched up and healed every man, woman, child or animal that crossed your path in need of help. You loved how soft and sweet Yasu is, a side only reserved for your eyes, and your eyes alone. He loves to cuddle and snuggle you all day long. You love the feeling of his warm arms wrapped around you. You can’t help but compare him to cotton candy, soft like a pillow and sweet as sugar. He will often come behind you as you work on making some medicine for one of your newest animal patients. He will gently snake his arms around your waist and prop his chin up to rest on your shoulder while he watches you work. He will definitely give you a few kisses on the cheek and back of the neck.

He loves it when you turn in his arms and return the warm embrace. He loves it, even more, when you give him a small lil Eskimo kiss followed by a sweet soft kiss on the lips. You have made this softi boi the happiest boy in all the world, and he will spend every day reminding you just how much he loves and adores you.

Review: Log Horizon

I recently got interested in checking out Log Horizon, after it being out for quite a long period of time. (I know I’m pretty late to the party, being almost 6 years since the first season) I wasn’t interested in it when it first came out because I wasn’t exactly the biggest fan of isekai back then, and to be honest even now.

Well to my surprise, I enjoyed this show more than I had expected going in, and even craved for more episodes to watch. (Season 3 is coming out this year!)

If a person like me can love this show, you might also get sucked into the world of Log Horizon. You never know before you try it, amirite?

Perspectives and Moods

So I strongly believe that a person’s perspective and the state on mind highly affects the enjoyment of a certain show. I’m sure that there are many viewers like me that were turned off initially by this gem of a show because we all thought it was a copy of a more popular anime at that time, Sword Art Online. Or maybe you were intimidated by all the unknown game logic and lingo mentioned in the anime.

Thanks to one of my friends who was an avid player of MMORPGs getting me interested in the game genre and the mechanics and basics of an MMORPG, I greatly enjoyed this show and understood most of what the show was trying to portray with getting stuck in an MMOPRG and making use of the loopholes in the rules of the game.

Overall, this show hit all the right notes at the right time for me and ended up being a pretty cracky watch. I was actually quite sad to know that I would have to wait just a bit longer for Season 3 to come. (Oh well, what can we do about that?)

Stuff I liked

1. The ever-growing Log Horizon ensemble cast.

I loved how the show takes its time introducing us to the characters that are central and important to the story going forward. There is the main male lead, Shiroe, the guy awkward at social interactions but is also a brilliant strategist, Naotsugu, the enthusiastic and happy-go-lucky guy, as well as Akatsuki, the stoic and silent assassin but having a pretty cute personality. There are more, but will only list them in the spoilery parts of this review. These three characters are the first few characters to be introduced in the show and immediately you see how they work well with each other. On paper, their personalities are so different that you would expect conflicts left and right, but the show makes it clear from the start that they would form a bond so strong that nothing can ever break it.

SPOILER WARNING

As early as the second episode, you can see how Naotsugu and Akatsuki, despite only meeting for the first time recently, have fallen into this friendly banter, despite it being quite lewd with Naotsugu being a pervert and Akatsuki being very peeved about it. Somehow this banter doesn’t feel forced like in other shows I’ve watched and comes quite naturally. I also like how Shiroe, who was introduced as the socially awkward one, being the one to become the bridge that starts this friendship.

There are so many characters worth mentioning, but if I do list them all with what I loved about them, this review will be crazy long. The characters all have chemistry and none of them feel like a caricature, despite being characters in an anime. I have to say, nicely done.

2. Shiroe

Shiroe is introduced at the start of the story being socially awkward, kinda like a lone wolf. He doesn’t want any association to any guild and the one time he was associated to a group, it wasn’t even a guild. Right from the start the anime shows you how strong he is, being level 90 and having friends that are ALSO level 90, such as Naotsugu, Akatsuki, Marielle, Henrietta (I think? I might be remembering this wrongly) The anime also implies that he is quite well known in the MMORPG world of Elder Tale.

He also starts to make connections and learn more about the world of Elder Tale that he might not have known before and makes use of the knowledge he has learnt to make this new world that they are trapped in liveable.

More that that though, as the anime progresses, you get to see his growth and deepen his friendships with his friends. There is nothing too devastating that happens in Log Horizon, but the setbacks that the main cast do face alongside Shiroe does make him mature and come out the other side a better person.

SPOILER WARNING

One of the events that stuck out to me is how he realised that inventing new magic in the world of Elder Tale is possible by observing how Nyanta is able to cook food that tastes good. He then proceeds to use that knowledge to his advantage and invents new magic that only he could perform at that point in time, contracts. I felt that this shows how smart Shiroe is in making connections that others may not have made, and how he gathers his information by observation.

I also liked the dorky side of Shiroe, especially his love for curry. He may seem like the stoic one in his friendship with Naotsugu, but deep down both of them are equally dorky and thus causes both of them to connect so well.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching his growth as well, from a guy who was a lone wolf and wanted nothing to do with guilds, to becoming a guy who STARTS his own guild. I also liked how even though he was slowly opening up to his friends that he doesn’t immediately become like an open book. He is still quite guarded, as shown by how he didn’t want to let them know his plan when he left Akihabara with Naotsugu to get the finances needed for the maintenance of the town. It is only after losing the raid and realising that he needs to learn to open up and trust in his friends more that he finally opens up and informs them about his motives. This growth feel quite organic and believable, making Shiroe seem more human. I hafta say, I really liked this aspect of the show.

3. Akatsuki

At the start, Akatsuki was quite bland. I thought she was going to be the stereotypical loli girl that is exceptionally good at what she does and becomes peeved when people mistake them for being a young child. To my surprise as the show went on, she quickly rose the ranks of my favourite characters in Log Horizon and stayed at second place until the end of Season 2. (Number 1 is Shiroe, so being number 2 is a pretty good feat!)

Her character got more focus and development in Season 2 compared to Season 1, and although I wish she could have more development in Season 1, I’m actually happy with where she ended up and how she grew and matured until the end of Season 2.

SPOILER WARNING

Right from the first episode, you learn that her avatar in Elder Tale was a tall and lean muscular man. Even though it is a minor detail, I liked how it was subtle foreshadowing for the insecurities she had in real life about her appearance. The constant gags of people calling her ‘shrimp’ were played for comedy but also foreshadowed the insecurity she has about her stature.

In Season 2, we learn that she has low self esteem and felt like she needed to be good at what she does to remain by Shiroe’s side. Because of this insecurity, she also didn’t make any effort to make connections with the other members of the guild and withdrew deeper into her shell.

It is only when she dies and fights the serial killer that she realises that the reason why Shiroe didn’t take her along for the raid was not because she was a burden, but that Shiroe relied on her to take care of the princess. She also regains her confidence and also comes to a realisation that her short stature isn’t a disadvantage, but a unique trait that she has. She starts to open up about her insecurities to the other members and made their bond even stronger.

Although many shows and anime do discuss the theme of self confidence and self love, I like how it never became preachy and instead showed a natural growth in Akatsuki to demonstrate this point. This not only made Akatsuki seem more relatable, but also makes this message more memorable for viewers.

What can I say, I love characters that feel human and relatable.

4. Character moments

I can’t list all of them, or else this post will become WAY too long. So I’m going to list some of my favourites. Of course, SPOILERS INCOMING.

The overall bromance between Naotsugu and Shiroe. A good bromance is always a nice breath of fresh air, in my opinion.

When the mini training camp squad realises that Rundelhaus is actually a Person from the Land and will not revive when he died like the rest of them. I cried so hard there were no more tears to be cried.

The blossoming romance between Marielle and Naotsugu, with their daily 9pm telepathic talks when Naotsugu went on the raid.

The friendship that is coming to be between Krusty and Raynessia. You have no idea how sad I was when Krusty disappeared!

The way how Isuzu held Rundelhaus’s hand when he was going to sign the contract to become an adventurer because he was too weak to do so by himself. Also the fact that he is laying in her lap… I was crying because he was dying but also excited simultaneously because they are so cute! Okay, my fangirling may have gone too far.

When Rundelhaus was so happy to become an adventurer simply because he wants to help others in need, and not for glory or the immortality. He’s such a cutie pie.

Demikas starting out as a pretty shitty guy, bullying the NPCs to becoming a valuable player in the raid. Also his wife, who’s a Person from the Land, being able to subdue him and calm him down.

Also Nyanta. Is there more to be said? He’s so cool~

Moving on!

5. Game mechanics and the mystery elements

I admit, I’m a noob when it comes to MMOPRGs. I do know the basics, but nothing more than that. I’m more of a singleplayer RPG, visual novel kinda person.

The show explains the game mechanics in very simple terms and even a non MMOPRG player like myself could understand the logic. Shiroe alsomanages to find the loopholes and slowly become stronger because of that. Unlike some protagonists that are strong simply because.

The mystery element of the show and how the players got stuck into the world of Elder Tale is also very compelling. The players slowly learn more about this new reality that they are stuck in and learns that the world may be more different than when they were playing the game. This makes the question of ‘how did they get stuck in the game’ and ‘who caused them to get stuck in the game’ become a mystery that needs solving, and not just a plot device used.

Log Horizon is quite clever, much more than I had expected going into the anime.

Stuff I didn’t like

Honestly, I had to REALLY nitpick at this section. There were so many things to love about this show. SPOILER WARNING!

The anime starts off quite abruptly. Without any context whatsoever, you see Shiroe waking up in the world inside a game. He ponders his situation for a bit before realising he can contact Naotsugu. He meets up with Naotsugu and talks to him familiarly.

Even though you know there is backstory regarding them both, you can’t help but feel as if you were missing certain pieces to the puzzle. It’s almost like someone asking you how a puzzle looks like without even you having the pieces to the said puzzle. The pieces do come as the story progresses, however, so this feeling of abruptness doesn’t last long.

The final verdict

Full of action, and lots of nice character moments. Game mechanics are explained simply for noobs to MMOPRG player and can be enjoyed by anyone. Highly reccomended!

i don’t know if i ever talked about them losing their originality? because originality is debatable in this case too, if you mean their original intention then yes i agree with that, and i agree they definitely created the illusion, once i got out of the bts bubble a bit and also thought back to the old days, i realized how closed off and filtered everything is comparison to the past and even to other kpop groups nowadays that are way more direct, i feel like even exo is more outspoken these days and direct with their fans which i thought could never happen??? i used to stan them and it was hell hah.. and these days.. wowza..

oh but actually when that was announced there was backlash? i remember seeing complaints about the producer as well as some of the trainees due to their supposed right wing associations, there were also complaints about women’s rights cause of the oversexualization of some of the girls back in japan and the producer’s lyrics, i think this backlash seems bigger or more visible to you because it’s happening in your fandom ;; that season of produce even ended up having the lowest rankings and voting participation so :/

haha i wish you didn’t start this with a backhanded compliment but dkajsd yeah overall i see your point and agree... i understand like if you didn’t buy into that whole spiel, then of course you can just keep on going and stanning them as idols and all that comes with that, but many people and me included sincerely thought that they were different, i have stopped stanning kpop groups for a while and got drawn back in with bts because i felt they were so fresh and unique, genuine and open with fans in comparison to other groups i have stanned.. but ofc that image crumbled as time went on.. things have changed as well... and i agree, it’s fine to enjoy it for just the entertainment and like the boys as people, accepting they are just as any other idol.. and maybe i will continue with that perspective myself!! but i honestly find it difficult having believed in it and also bighit continually selling this image to their fans despite evidence of the contrary, i can deal with idol business but like continually being blatantly lied to and then being in a fandom where most of the rhetoric is build around blindly believing it and eating anything the boys and bighit sells? it’s honestly emotionally exhausting sometimes.. but yeah.. you’re honestly right.. even with the last point lol... they are men, and korean men at that sigh.. that’s why i’m burying myself in girl groups nowadays adkjsd to heal my soul

1) things that inspire you

HMMM!! Tumblr inspires me! I like seeing mood boards and quotes and match posts for each of my OC's aesthetics. Ironically, school and my studies also inspire me and sometimes I think up of snazzy ideas from them lol For example, Leorio's LP paper test was inspired by litmus tests used in chemistry lab XD and you dfsdf you inspire my doll *hearts*

2. things that motivate you

Reviews, fanart, and asks motivate me XD I love reading people's reactions to the fic and they always make me feel five thousand more times motivated to write! Also, when I feel down in the dumps about writing, I just say to myself 'Mars, believe in yo'self, you love atww, you have to finish it! Cuz no one else is going to write that father and son story, and no one else is going to write steamy ozumi fic, WRITE THE TRAGIC BL ROMANCE *^* fjghdfg WRITE THE STEAMINESS!!!!!!!' I am my own devil's advocate :DDDDDD

5. since how long do you write?

Like how long is a writing session? Ummmmmm When I'm really dedicated and I know I don't have any homework to do, I can go for hours ;) fdfsd (not that kind of going for hours YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN XD ) I haven't written much since school started, but I was writing a lot this summer and as a result I think I ruined my vision XDD I don't need glasses....yet. Yui!! How do you combat eye strain when it comes to writing?? ;A; I set a goal of finishing atww this summer, but that didn't happen and the plot only thickened more hahaha I'm happy about the turn out tho, there are more stories to unravel hehehe *^*

6. how did writing change you?

Writing was actually very therapeutic to me. It really changed the way I saw myself, that my voice and opinions are valid and I don't have to stay silent, that and I don't want to go back to being silent. Especially writing ATWW, this fic has grown with me so much, it is apart of me and incredibly precious to me. I love it a lot sdfgdfg And I hope I can continue writing stories in the future too.

7. early influences on your writing

Shannon Hale XD She's the writer who made me a reader then eventually made me want to write myself. I really tried to emulate her writing when I first started, but I'm slowly discovering my own style.

13. hardest character to write

Elodea :DDDDDDD you're probably wondering 'BUT HE"S YOUR MC!!!!' here's why, it's because he is constantly changing. Baby elo is different from toddler elo. Toddler elo is different from kid elo, kid elo is different from teen elo and so on :D he's leaning about the world, his perspective is changing, and he's experiencing new things. But this also makes him exciting to write. It's the shifts between these stages that makes it, not hard, but something I need to adjust my thinking about him. Elo is still elo, he's changing. For example, part 4 elo is similar to who he was in part 3, but he's changed and matured (and he's more open about himself and his adoption, not reserved, and goofier than before XD dear god I love him dfds )

14. easiest character to write

ELODEA :DDDDDD when I'm in the a certain elo mood, be it baby or teen, I can completely focus on him. It's just the shifts that make it a little jarring at times XD Also, Gen and Killua!

20. favorite character to write

My fav is ALWAYS going to be Elodea XD but currently Oz has asserted himself as my favorite hahaha

24. favorite scene you’ve ever written

The train scene at the end of chapter 7 and there is a scene in chapter 39 (yet to be updated) that is HANDS DOWN my favorite. It's a scene I always wanted to write for elo and killua and I'm happy I was finally able to make it happen.

25. favorite line you’ve ever written

"You were born of my heart" this one is my fav :')

32. alternate title for (insert story title)

fgdfgdfg (they all suckedddddddd fgdfg) one title was 'Life of a Water Weed' or 'Lives of the Water Weeds' XD

Gen will never love cucumbers, it was just never fated to be LOL And.....Gen eventually becomes a brother :DDDDDD i'll give you a hint, he becomes a younger brother AND an older brother at the same time, i'll let you think about that ;)

49. writing advice

OMG to be in a position to past down wisdom for writing *^* idk what to say XDDD other than write the story you want to create, the one you want to read, b/c no one else is going to tell it better than you.
